Survey: women and the ring

Men and women (or men and men, women and women, etc.) about to announce their engagement to the world, have you already decided which ring to give? Compared to the films of the 1950s, the criteria for selecting the ring (and also the partner, for that matter) have changed. This is demonstrated by a survey commissioned in the USA by the Huffington Post. First, women are less romantic or, perhaps, less naive. Apparently, they stopped dreaming of the wedding when they were young and only 19 percent imagined the shape of the engagement ring. In short, women are more satisfied. For their part, less than half of the men interviewed explained that he would ask his girlfriend’s father for permission to marry her, also because only 39 percent of women said they expected the boyfriend to want to obtain this approval.

But let’s get back to the ring. 61 percent of women said that any engagement ring would suit them (well, can we believe that?). Yet, over three quarters of men are worried that the shape of the engagement ring will not be liked by their partner.

Again: 27 percent of women would like their boyfriend to wait to propose a real engagement until she can afford to give a ring. It seems that men care more: 45 percent said they prefer an unofficial relationship until she can afford to give a nice ring. It sounds a bit like an excuse, but let’s take it.

Another surprise: we like Britney Spears’ pride, which returned a 200 thousand dollar ring. 70 percent of women would give back the engagement ring in the event of a relationship breakdown, just like the American star did. And over half of men also expect the same gesture. In short, a diamond is forever. Almost.
