Six months later he was already chief designer. The next step was to make a pair of earrings for his wife, Galina, whom she still loves and wears.

California dreaming with Sheryl Lowe

/

Imagine the beaches of California, surfing, a soundtrack with the progressive rock of the seventies: if you look closely you can also see Sheryl Lowe.
For about 20 years Sheryl has been designing and producing jewelry with the same spirit that she had when, as a girl, she spent a lot of time between waves and Californian sand. But her career began as a make-up artist in the Hollywood studios: she curated make-up in 30 films and, above all, between a foundation and a mascara she met the actor Rob Lowe, whom he married.

After leaving makeup and cinema, she became passionate about interior design and, finally, jewelry. Work and spiritual convictions have pushed Sheryl to travel the world, and to transfer her experience in the jewels, which testify to a multicultural echo, with iconic references that seem inspired by the California of the children of flowers, between the symbol of peace and small Buddah as pendants for necklaces . Her jewels were worn by Maria Shriver, Gwen Stefani, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz and Oprah Winfrey. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of her jewelry is donated to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The Ottoman myth of Sevan Biçakçi

/

From Turkey, the jewels that have inherited the Ottoman Empire charm, by Sevan Biçakçi ♦

Sevan Biçakçi is a designer wich a style so unique that it can not be compared with any other. Maybe because his carving on translucent materials, performed with dental instruments, is so careful to leave no words. The fact is that the Armenian jeweler likes a lot. Even to those who love a minimalist style.

In his incredible rings it is usually reproduce monuments of Istanbul, the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the old Cistern, the portraits of the sultans and the gods, but also flowers, birds, fruits and insects. In fact, in the bottom of aquamarine, quartz, emeralds, sapphires and other gems they are engraved domes, petals, beaks, all miniatures that float in the transparency of the cabochon-cut stones mounted on ornately chiseled ring shank in gold, silver and enamel. In short, there is all the Byzantine artistic tradition and turkish Ottoman Empire, a kind of time machine that seems to be looking at it in the pages of the book written by Orhan Pamuk, My Name is Red, set in Istanbul of the sixteenth century.

His jewels are a myth for over the world and have won a place of honor also for sale at Barneys New York.

The series of rings with the Hagia Sophia made it known all over the world, but the real fame, especially in the US and one of the stars of Hollywood comes thanks to Gwyneth Paltrow, who often wears her necklace with a lock, one of the most recognizable themes Biçakçi, who is also one of the symbols of Turkish culture. Used to close the fences around the graves, represented the promise of good deeds in exchange for a merciful treatment for their loved ones, and take it in the neck meant to recall the commitment making valuable the person wearing it. And then the stylized daggers (the name Biçakçi in turkish means knife) on the facts bracelets with metal mesh as the armor of ancient warriors and other decorations typical of the Muslim world which has an important place even calligraphy.

In his workshop of five floors near the Grand Bazaar and then a few steps from all the most important buildings of the Turkish capital, the goldsmith with his collaborators, ten people, produces a maximum of 500 units a year, because the work d ‘ etching takes a long time. But not only that the notch on the bottom of the stone is a delicate technique, the risk of cracks in the gem is high and if at the end of the day the result is not excellent is thrown away everything. Fortunately the experience of many years of work, more than twenty, also allows to approach the finest materials without too much fear and create even more three-dimensional and colorful objects. As Jar does not work on commission and the price is established only to finished jewelry, although on average, ranging from 10 000 to $ 30,000 for a ring, and $ 3,000 for a simple necklace.

Irene Neuwirth bohemian chic

//

The bohemian chic jewels of the Californian designer Irene Neuwirth, the favorite of Gwyneth Paltrow and … ♦ ︎

She has a dream house on a canal in Venice, a small town near Los Angeles, ended up in the pages of glossy magazines like Vogue and Elle. And in her boutique in the big city of California she put a pink sofa, a beautiful kitchen-stove Lacanche, portraits of dogs. In short, nothing suggests that the Irene Neuwirth flagship store is a favorite of many Hollywood stars, such as Naomi Watts, Tracee Ellis Ross, Julianne Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Paulson, Busy Philipps and Ruth Negga. Instead, Irene Neuwirth, next to the air, a bit like a Coachella fan, is a very appreciated jewelery designer, present all over the world.

Irene Neuwirth prefers colors, indeed, the mix of bright colors. Stones like tourmaline or chalcedony are combined with gold, emeralds or rubies.

Her jewels, which she started to create in 2003, by inserting simple glass beads, represent the opposite of those of the great Maison, which focus entirely on refined work and classic jewels. The Californian designer, instead, offers bright jewels, which can be worn with a sporty dress, jeans or an elegant dress to go to dinner. But it is always high-end jewelry: the necklace you see on this page, for example, costs 160,000 euros. Lavinia Andorno

The freedom jewels of Karma El Khalil

She studied psychology. And for this she became a gemologist and jewelry designer in New York. It seems strange? It is. But it is the story of Karma El Khalil, who received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Tufts University in Boston. Then, she wanted to do a master’s degree in London, but a random mistake on the part of the school’s admissions department delayed entry. So Karma spent the summer designing jewelry for fun. As can be easily deduced from the name, Karma El Khalil is of Arab origin. Lebanese, to be precise. And the makeshift designer showed the jewelry design to a family friend in Beirut, which is one of the centers of Middle Eastern jewelry.

Result: they liked them. The designer’s parents invested $ 10,000 to make 15 pieces, which were immediately sold. And Karma El Khalil’s professional history began. She moved to New York to study design and graduated from the GIA, immediately sold 80% of the jewelry at the first opportunity and found admirers in Madonna and Brad Pitt, who gave Angelina Jolie a Karma ring (they were others times), Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera. The mix of cultures that she brings with her, between Europe, America and Africa (where she lived as a child with her parents), stimulated and conditioned her creativity. And, perhaps, the degree in psychology helps her understand the desire of others.

Damiani’s butterflies

//

The butterflies € 1 million price signed by Damiani fly to the Venice Film Festival ♦ ︎

The Venice Film Festival is a stage for actors and actresses. And there is a way of saying that defines the protagonists of the entertainment world as “stage animals”. However, they are not the only animals to animate the days of the edition of the Venice Film Festival in Venice number 75. In fact, there are also the animals-jewel of Damiani, which is partner of the Fondazione ente dello spettacolo, an association promotes the enhancement of film culture in Italy. In fact, the Maison of hine jewelry has always had a link with the cinema, with ambassadors like Sharon Stone, Tilda Swinton, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brad Pitt, without forgetting the very Italian Isabella Rossellini and Sophia Loren. And Damiani jewels have also appeared in famous films, such as Angels and Demons, A Bigger Splash, The Blind Side.

Damiani has therefore decided to present at the Mostra del Cinema the creations of the Animalia collection:

spiders, geckos, owls, monkeys, parrots, dragonflies in the high jewelery version. In particular, the novelties are made up of three new butterfly rings. The first ring is made of white gold and features an oval fancy purplish pink of 2.23 carats, refined by the intensity of the sapphires that design the lightness of the wings in the different shades of blue. In the second one a round-cornered rectangual fancy blue of 2.52 carats is mounted on rose gold and complemented by white and brown diamonds, in a harmonious alternation that evokes the beauty of a butterfly in flight. In the third proposal, a 3.13 carat yellowish green cushion fancy is combined with white and yellow diamonds, in which the flashes of light are enhanced by the yellow gold. An ingenious mechanism reproduces the wingspan of the butterfly and the movement of the beating of wings. By bending the finger, the pin comes alive, creating a surprising effect. Price: over 1 million euros.

Julia Roberts to work with Renzi

Julia Roberts works with Renzi to a necklace. Ok, this is not the Italian prime minister, Matteo Renzi, but a namesake jeweler, Robin Renzi. The Hollywood star, in fact, decided to support the initiative of charity of his friends, the filmmaker and his wife, Kristen and Gordon Gray. So the actress asked the Me & Ro jewelry designers to produce a necklace, with the aim of raising funds to find a cure for Batten disease. It is a rare and fatal brain disease that affects mostly children between five and ten years. The disease was also diagnosed at the daughters of Gray’s, who promoted the Charlotte Gray & Gwenyth Foundation in memory of them. Robin Renzi of Me & Ro, has therefore created Gray Foundating Double Heart Pendant. “When I was asked to help the Grays in their struggle to raise funds for the foundation of their daughters was so moved by their story that I felt the need to do something,” said Renzi (the jeweler, eh). Necklace limited edition has two interlocking hearts with smaller hearts enclosed in a hexagon. The jewel is available in 18K gold or silver, and 100 percent of the proceeds will fund research against Batten disease. The cause #CureBatten also involved other celebrities such as Lena Dunham, Channing Tatum, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Lavinia Andorno
