Jose Hess, luxury pop

//

Jose Hess, from necklaces refined gold and diamonds, to the cufflinks with Mickey’s face: the luxury meets pop.

One of the most imaginative designers of the century: perhaps can be defined in this way Jose Hess, but is also ok a definition as an artist or craftsperson. In short, it is one of those rare people who can do many things well but, above all, has a very definite personality, which turns her skills into precious objects. Master goldsmith, designer and gemologist, is a supporter of an American jewelry design, somewhere between pop and the extra luxury. Alongside refined necklaces, like the necklace Ribbon, you see on this page, you can find the twins by gold wrist with the face of Mickey Mouse. In addition to focusing on the creative process, moreover, Jose Hess teaches jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, he worked as a consultant for jewelry companies in the US and abroad, and draws collections of jewelry that are sold on television, with himself to make live presentations.

Another proof of its many attitudes? It was also the first American president to Cibjo, an international association that seeks to establish uniform standards for the jewelry industry worldwide. Jose is worshiped also in Hollywood, by celebrities such as Demi Moore, Cindy Crawford, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Candy Spelling. Jose Hess also has a story to tell: he was born in Germany, but fled with his family to Colombia, South America, before Nazi rule. In the South American country he was apprenticed to a goldsmith, where he learned the art of jewelry making. In 1951 Hess moved to New York, still working in the jewelry industry. He also served as a soldier for two years in the United States Army. Back in civilian life, he made models and jewelry for David Webb, before working for himself. Hess has also received numerous awards, including the De Beers Diamonds International Award. Alessia Mongrando

Mattioli’s new dreams

/

Rêver, in the language of Charles Baudelaire, describes the involuntary act of imagining during sleep. In the language of Licia Mattioli, however, the same word means a line of jewels that presents the stones set upside down, that is, with the tip protruding on the visible side of earrings or rings. The Rêve_r collection, presented in 2016 (we talked about it here), over time has added other dreams to its repertoire. And he continues to add, also because dreams are inexhaustible like the imagination of those who design jewels.

The jewels that expand the collection of the Turin-based Maison Mattioli are earrings that maintain the slightly punk spirit and shape of the original line unaltered. Two are rather large hoop earrings, made of gold and titanium with the addition of tanzanites or white and black diamonds. Other drop earrings also use tourmaline and amethyst, diamond garnets and kogolong.

They are jewels for a young audience like, after all, a good part of the production of the brand introduced by Industrie Testi, an Italian company based in Empoli (a city near Florence). The company, founded in 1998 by Alessandro Testi, often uses non-precious materials such as bronze and steel, sometimes together with silver and gold, or diamond sand: a mix that allows prices to be contained. Another specialty is 24-karat gold-plated bronze, for the more fashionable lines. By the way, the name Rebecca derives from that of the first daughter of the Tuscan entrepreneur.

Bamboo becomes precious with Silvia Furmanovich

/

Fine jewelry can be made using simple bamboo. The answer is yes, if the designer is Silvia Furmanovich, a Brazilian who has already used plant material for her refined jewelry. In fact, Silvia Furmanovich’s new collection is called Bamboo and uses this plant that is very widespread in Asia in an innovative way. To learn all the secrets about bamboo, the Brazilian creator went to Japan, where it has also been used for millennia to create woven handicrafts.

Bamboo is a very ductile and fast growing vegetable, but it is also very hardy. To create her jewels, thin strips of bamboo are cut and curved in the intricate weaves of Japanese knots: a process requires experience and, above all, an Olympic calm. In the Bamboo collection, the fragments of this plant have been woven together with 18-karat gold, precious stones and diamonds. The collection is also the result of a partnership between Silvia Furmanovich and Instituto Jatobás, founded by Brazilian philanthropists Luiz & Betty Feffer, who is committed to influencing and expanding sustainable life and consciousness in the South American country. And, in addition, it has dedicated an area of over 80 hectares to the cultivation of bamboo in Brazil.

The Impressionist Jewels of Zeemou Zeng

/

Zeemou Zeng is one of the Chinese-born designers who make a show in the world of jewelry with their innovative creations. Yet the Zeemou Zeng brand was only founded in 2017. The Impressionists collection, for example, was born from an idea that will be appreciated by those who love art: it is in fact a line of jewelry inspired by impressionist painters, such as Monet, Manet or Seurat. The collection includes nine sets of earrings and a ring. Each jewel refers to a famous work by the painters of that revolutionary period for art.

For example, a pair of earrings in 18K yellow gold and black onyx are the translation of a painting by Édouard Manet that has a convivial moment as its subject. And so also for all the jewels in the collection, each time twinned with an impressionist painting that can be found in museums around the world.

Zeemou Zeng, who works in London, plays a lot on the balance and symmetry of the stones he uses: the style is a legacy of his interior design and architecture studios in China and then of Designer Making and Jewelery Design at Camberwell College of Arts from London. He loves materials such as crystal, ceramic, porcelain and precious metals, as well as gems of course. He won IJL (International Jewelery London) Bright Young Gems in 2018 and the Boodles Award (Gold) for Fine Jewelery at the Goldsmiths Craft & Design Council Awards for his Melody Collection in 2019.

Valentina Ferragni’s first jewels were a success

///

Valentina Ferragni‘s jewels have sold like hot cakes. The designer, sister of the even more famous influencer Chiara Ferragni, made her debut in the world of jewelry only a couple of months ago with her namesake brand Valentina Ferragni Studio. But the social notoriety has rewarded the initiative, for now limited to the Uali collection, the name of a line of modular earrings: that is, they can be joined together to form a chain. Even the price, not high but not cheap (120 euros the most expensive single earring), has held back sales, all via e-commerce.

The earrings are made of silver, in some cases 24 karat gold plated with the addition of cubic zirconia or a colored surface. Many models sold out in a short time. The Uali Gold variant ended just one week after opening and, after being restocked, went out of stock again after just one day. A result that many jewelry companies envy. The sales of the jewels take place through the brand’s website.

Bronzallure pink and green

//

The world is getting greener and jewelry is adequate. Diamonds and gold are increasingly monitored to ensure a green origin. And there are those who bet everything on jewels that have a green stone: for example, malachite. The Milanese brand Bronzallure also made this choice, offering a series of jewels in rose gold accompanied by green striped stone.

Anello toi et moi
Anello toi et moi

Its color, which varies between shades of light and dark green, up to almost blue, has enchanted many designers. It is usually a stone used in jewelry especially as a cabochon, but in this case Bronzallure has provided flat and round surfaces. And this is good, because malachite is not a particularly hard mineral and can be damaged if it is bumped or scratched on contact with sharp objects. In addition, it becomes effervescent on contact with hydrochloric acid: therefore, malachite must be kept away from corrosive products such as muriatic acid.

Flower Power for Bea Bongiasca

//

At the end of her studies in London, at Central Saint Martins College, Bea Bongiasca made her debut with the No Rice, No Life jewelry collection, which emphasized the green concept of sustainability and nutrition. A few years later, she proposed a collection inspired by the twisted tendrils of the plant on which the grapes grow. Now the Milanese designer debuts on Net-A-Porter with some exclusively designed floral-inspired pieces.

This mini line is called, in fact, Flower Power and winks at the Sixties, when the hippie movement used floral motifs as a symbol to support the pacifist movement. They are earrings and rings which, like all other Bea Bongiasca jewels, are also made in Italy in 9-karat gold, partially immersed in enamel. Their shape resembles the outline of a flower, but always in the classic pop look that distinguishes the brand. The jewels can also use stones such as blue topaz or rock crystal. The sale also has a charity side: 20% of the profits from the sale of this product will go to the Italian Red Cross Association.

The earrings for the AirPods

/

Jewelery has been worn by women and men for millennia. But this does not mean that they should be considered only traditional objects. Today, in fact, a jewel can very well coexist with technology. Indeed, it can become complementary. This is the case of the Pebble Pods, earrings that are used to wrap Apple’s AirPods. These earrings, designed by jewelry designer Suhani Parekh, in addition to being an ornament, serve to make the wearer feel more comfortable because they prevent the earphones from being lost (she herself has lost some), for example when jogging.

The earrings are made by the London brand Misho: the Pebble Pods keep the wireless earphones attached to the ears. The jewels are offered in three different models. The Sculptural Pebble Pods are the most elaborate, while the other two models are simple and offered in two different sizes. In short, jewels that are not precious, but useful. They start at around $ 75 – an expense that could prove worthwhile.

It is the only Puzzle that will never be completed: the collection by Mattioli, a Turin-based brand specializing in jewelery with a strong personality, is one of the proposals that have experienced the greatest success. And that, periodically, are enriched with new pieces or, better, tiles, given that the name of the collection refers to table puzzles. Now the Puzzle Safari line is enriched with three new colors (pink nail polish, light blue nail polish and green nail polish).

One of the reasons that made Puzzle successful is that the elements, like those of the earrings, are interchangeable. Puzzle tiles can be easily replaced to match the earrings with the dress or simply because you like it. The jewels are sold together with a box that contains at least three spare parts, for example, with a mother of pearl version. But boxes with a dozen different spare parts are also on sale. Same goes for necklaces, for which the elements of the Puzzle collection become pendants. Finally, to remember that the jewels of this line are offered in three sizes: small, medium and large, obviously with different prices. For example, a box with 11 different spare parts for medium-sized earrings currently costs around 2,2500 euros.

Lots of emeralds for Coomi

The jewels between culture and pomp of Coomi, from India to the USA. Now with a new collection with Colombian emeralds by Muzo

From the fané palaces of Mumbai to the busy avenues of New York or Los Angeles: Coomi Bhasin is an Indian designer who in 1977 left her native country (with much nostalgia) and founded her jewelry company in the USA. It is a strange mix of style and philosophy: textile designer, architect and landscape architect, she brought her experiences into the world of jewelry.

It is no coincidence that she defines herself as a Renaissance woman, that is, capable of creating and reasoning on many different tracks of culture. Her jewelry brand has been active since 2002 and has not struggled to find a prominent place not only in the United States, but also abroad. Her degree in Art History led her to create collections that are inspired by antiquity, from the world of the Egyptians to Greek and Roman sculpture. But not only, as the Muzo collection shows, with Colombian emeralds extracted from the mining company. Friend and appreciated by many celebrities, Coomi has found a balance between History with a capital S and the stories (with a lowercase s) of actors and actresses. A philosophical butterfly for Lebole Gioielli

/

The word Cho or Chou (蝶 紋) in both Chinese and Japanese indicates more or less the silhouette of the butterfly. And since the world of the fascinating East is the source of inspiration for Lebole Gioielli, here is a collection that takes up the shape of the butterfly. The Cho collection consists of asymmetrical earrings representing a girl-butterfly on one lobe and a butterfly seen in profile on the other.

Orecchini della collezione Cho
Orecchini della collezione Cho

It’s not all here: the butterfly, explains Barbara Lebole, represents the protagonist of an ancient oriental tale that teaches something interesting about the meaning of life. According to the legend to which the Maison refers, a man was widowed and had to take care of his two daughters. The girls, very curious and intelligent, continually asked questions to the father who was not always sure of giving the right answer. So the man decided to send them to live by the sage, in order to be sure that they were well educated.
Farfalle con goccia nera
Farfalle con goccia nera

To measure man’s wisdom, the girls decided to trap him by asking him a question he would not have been able to answer. The older sister went out into the open and after catching a butterfly she hid it in her apron. They decided to ask the sage if the butterfly in their hands was alive or dead and to act accordingly on the response. If the sage said she was alive, they would have killed her. If, however, she said she was dead, they would fly her away. With this trick, the essay’s answer would still have been incorrect. But the wise answered simply: it depends on you, since the butterfly is in your hands.

The butterfly, according to Lebole, represents life in our hands of ourselves. Who would have thought that a pair of earrings could give a philosophy lesson?

Diamonds in Catalan mode

There are jewelery brand that you really know little about: it’s the case of Facet, a small empire based in Barcelona and offices in Monaco, Paris and New York. Furthermore, it is also a first-class brand of jewelry, in particular of those made with profusion of stones. It’snt a accident: in fact, the story began just forty years ago at the initiative of Zevi Paz, diamond dealer longstanding. He was used to select the purest diamonds sold in Spain, he widened his eyes on what the diamonds become, that is, elements of jewelery. Indeed, the rumors say that the temptation to expand the activities to the jewelry is from the wife, Miri Paz.

A lotus flower for Lebole

/

The lotus flower is only a set of petals for Westerners, but in the East it is deeply evocative, as Lebole Gioielli knows well. In love with Japan and its (often surprising) traditions, Barbara Lebole dedicated to the lotus flower which in Japanese is called Hasu, in particular to the Ohga variety, one of her collections of earrings. This flower has a story that Lebole reconstructs to introduce the Ohga Hasu collection, composed of lotus flowers that decorate, mixed with colored natural stones, earrings of multiple lengths and sizes.

Orecchini con nappa rossa
Orecchini con nappa rossa

Here is the story: in 1951 the Japanese botanist Ichiro Ohga found, under a layer of peat, some seeds hidden for over a thousand years. From those seeds a unique specimen of lotus blossomed, unknown until then and it arrived to us after almost 2 thousand years. According to tradition, it is not enough that the seed is thrown into the water to hatch: it needs to be scratched. For this reason it is more easily rooted in swampy water, because the residues that the mud drags scratch the seed allowing its vitality. In any case, like the other lotus varieties, Ohga is also a symbol of purity, because it blooms immaculate even in muddy waters.

The Gothic mobile by Lebole Gioielli

/

Beside the fascination for Japan, Barbara Lebole has a fondness for the dark side. This is testified by Caratteri Mobili, the new line of earrings that enriches the Gothic Collection of Lebole Gioielli. The peculiarity of this line concerns the mobile structure of the earrings. It is made of gold galvanized silver and, above all, has its origins in art (another passion of Barbara Lebole), where the word mobiles means are a type of sculpture built to exploit the principles of balance, for example those of Alexander Calder.

In these sculptures the hanging elements balance each other and remain in balance, but not immobile: they oscillate with a minimum movement or breath of breeze. In the same way, the individual pieces that make up the colorful and multi-material earrings are suspended on a silver frame that recalls the Gothic Collection.
Each earring in the collection, single, assembles colored stones of various shapes and small objects that are inspired by the wunderkammer, the rooms of wonders that in the past contained collections of surprising natural objects (for the time). The collection consists of 26 single earrings that can be combined as desired to create the favorite couple.

In the geometric garden of Annoushka Ducas

//

Annoushka Ducas studied at the Sorbonne, lived in Hong Kong, and moved to London. But now he has chosen to live in the garden. Not in a real sense, but ideal. Indeed, the designer launched the Garden Party collection. In fact, the British passion for gardening and greenery is known. But, in this case, the garden that inspired Annoushka Ducas is rather the one in Italian or French style. In short, those gardens that have hedges and shrubs cut with geometric shapes. And it’s also the designer’s home garden in Sussex.

The jewels are made of 18 carat gold, with diamonds and black rhodium lines that make the volume of the jewels even more geometric. For example, with earrings that take the form of ornamental trees, pendants of different sizes that can be worn on a traditional 18-karat gold chain or combined with the torque necklace inspired by the seventies. There is also a cocktail ring (limited edition) which represents a micro labyrinth framed by diamonds and golden beads.
