Jewelery with fringes and tassels.

//

They became fashionable thanks to the women who fought (having fun) for their freedom in the 1920s ♦

First the feathers appeared, then the fringes and tassels. The decorations that have enlivened the silhouettes on the catwalks of the past seasons, now like a wave overwhelm the world of jewelry. They are the must-have details of next autumn: in gold or bronze to give a little warmth in view of the imminent cold, in leather and fabric with a Far West flavor or with very thin beads that recall the elegance of the Twenties, with Ethno tribal feathers such as the Masai queens or with very Seventy folk beads. Whatever the style and length, they are always very feminine and give that allure of originality, in some cases of daring, to those who wear them. The important thing is to know how to combine clothes and accessories to avoid an excessively theatrical effect.

Fringes and tassels also have a merit that should not be underestimated: they help elongate the face or bust if worn as a necklace. But, of course, this can be counterproductive for those with a particularly elongated face or a thin, narrow torso. In this case, it is better to avoid fringes and tassels. Since jewels of this type usually have a rather accentuated volume, it is also better to avoid combining tassels and fringes with very elaborate dresses, which can aesthetically confuse the appearance.

But beware: fringes are not just an aesthetic choice. In fact, they recall the history of the Flappers. Don’t you know who they were? Bad. The flappers were young women who claimed more freedom in the Twenties in America. To break the stifling conventions of the time, the flappers led a lifestyle considered scandalous, immoral, dangerous. The flappers wanted more economic freedom, to be able to express their opinion in politics and sexual equality.

The young flappers (the origin of the word is unknown) followed fashion, smoked in public, drank alcohol, danced in jazz clubs. It was they, in fact, who introduced the most striking and lively cocktail rings. Moreover, they loved fringed dresses. Another good reason to love fringed jewelry.

The lightness of OroSoffiato

//

The OroSoffiato jewels, soft shapes and a special production technique ♦

Those who believe that jewels are made one by one by old artisans armed with worn tools are wrong. Of course, there are those too. But 99% of the jewels are produced by modern machinery and, perhaps later, they are assembled by hand. To distinguish quality, therefore, is also the ability of companies to make the industrial process of the best possible quality. And whoever succeeds is better.

Orecchini della collezione Drop
Orecchini della collezione Drop

Effe Due OroSoffiato is a brand of the Italian company Galvanotec, a third-party manufacturer from Arcugnano (Vicenza), which was the first in Italy to produce electroforming jewels that stand out from those of other brands, because they do not use an internal volume, usually made of copper or other metals, then coated with gold. OroSoffiato, instead, simply uses a thick gold film, empty inside. Just blown gold, jewels with a lot of volume, but light. The earrings, in particular, can thus be worn without feeling too heavy. Furthermore, the metal is an alloy of gold and silver devoid of copper, indium and cadmium. The company has a special ability to select the material and the production process thanks to instruments, such as the x-ray and atomic absorption spectrometer, which allow it to reach perfection.

Margery Hirschey, from deep America

Margery Hirschey, from fashion model to designer who loves natural stones and recycled gold ♦

Margery Hirschey’s jewels are distributed in about forty jewelery stores all over the United States. The brand also sells in Canada and Puerto Rico beyond, of course, the rest of the world through online commerce. Let’s say this to emphasize how jewels that have a artisan look are actually the fruit of a studied strategy, which has led a pair of Margery Hirschey-colored emerald-colored earrings in second place in the Couture Design Awards. These earrings, reminiscent of Alexander Calder’s sculptures, represent the style of the Colorado company.

Margery Hirschey began her career with Charles Kliebacker, New York’s couturier, as a model. He launched his jewelery line in 2008, Colorado, where he worked. The same year, practically without experience in the field, in an improvised studio, the designer created a collection that debuted in a trunk show at the Bergdorf Jewelery Designer Salon. In January 2014 Margery Hirschey received the Rising Star Award for Jewelery. It uses recycled gold and silver and adores the pizza of Naples.

NotForAll, bijoux made in Florence

Bijoux: those of the NotForAll brand are made in Florence ♦

NotForAll is for everyone and was born in 2010. The name of the brand is English, as the company itself points out, yet it is very Italian, based in Calenzano, a town between the cities of Prato and Florence.
NotForAll describes itself as a project born around textile suggestions with the encounter between yarn, metal and stones. And this is because it also offers bijoux made with the style of crochet fabrics. Earrings and necklaces are quite simple, but with their own style. They are made of metal, sometimes enamelled and natural or synthetic stones. All for prices that average between 100 and 200 euros.

The elegant and courageous asymmetry of jewelry by designer Marcia Budet in New York City ♦ ︎

If symmetry is the mother of beauty, transgression is the daughter of passion. So it’s nice to admire something perfectly balanced, and then it is so exciting breaking the rule. She is think so designer of New York Marcia Budet, who loves stones and asymmetries. She tells that as a child she collected rocks in a box. Today she collects of prizes and collections in which geometries follow roads different from the usual. PdPaola’s Rule of Five

//

PdPaola tuned to channel five. Television has nothing to do with it: the Five collection is described by the brand as a journey into the profound beauty of the wildest nature. Above all thanks to the communication campaign of the Spanish fashion house, which chose the model Lea de La Bouralière as the face, portrayed on horseback, in contact with nature. And a bit like the clouds in the sky, even the jewels follow an irregular design, partly asymmetrical, but which does not cancel the aesthetic balance.

The jewels of the Five collection by PdPaola are made of sterling silver, with an 18-karat gold plating and are enriched with small stones such as synthetic corundum with sapphire blue tones, and cubic zirconia with the colors of stones such as rhodolite (purple or red) , or champagne, gold, white. The price is very low: a ring in silver plated and cubic zirconia is proposed for 55 euros, while the earrings called Tiger and which have a greater number of zirconia crystals go up to 135 euros.

Brosway’s geometries

//

Geometry, a word that derives from Latin and which is composed of the prefix geo which refers to the Greek word terra and metria, which in the same language indicates the measure. In short, geometry is originally the measurement of the earth. Over time, the definition of geometry has expanded and now includes the idea of using defined flat figures, such as the circle, the square, the oval. If you transfer these concepts to the world of bijoux, here is the new collection by Brosway, an affordable jewelry brand from Bros Manifatture. The Geometric collection actually uses the shapes of circles and wedge ovals.

But another specificity of the Geometric collection is its golden color. The bijoux, in fact, are made of steel, covered on the surface with gold PVD and the addition of Swarovski crystal golden shadow. Necklaces and earrings also use the classic chain, alternating with septile or wide links, while circles and ovals are presented intertwined.

The curves of Myrto Anastasopoulou

The bold curves and rigorous geometries of Myrto Anastasopoulou, designer in Athens ♦

Myrto Anastasopoulou she is a Greek designer. The country that originated an architecture that is imitated until today and is considered to be the cradle of Western civilization, now is curiously the cradle of a modern design, which has nothing to do with the past. Myrto Anastasopoulou is among the jewelers who have gone through the road of renewal, with sometimes indefinite lines and volumes, amazing curves, bold approaches.

Small sculptures that are far removed from the classicity of ancient Fidia master: maybe could be inspired by Anish Kapoor. The other thing you notice right away is a rich, eclectic style. Myrto Anastasopoulou don’t has only one track on which to shows creativity, but plays his music on different instruments. Combine, in other words, different styles: from earrings with tourmaline drops, quite pleasing and all-in-class, with rings of tormented curves.
Jewelry is made of sterling silver, 18k gold, or in combinations of different metals. The designer has her showroom in Athens, in Kolonaki quarter. Rudy Serra

The first Petra by Giovanni Raspini

///

Petra, one by Giovanni Raspini new collections, focuses on volume and the sense of matter. As always, silver is the basis of the collections of the Tuscan Maison. But on some occasions, such as in the Petra line, alongside the natural metal jewelry, there is also a version in gold-plated silver. The texture of the worked metal, with wrinkles and small folds, suggest a studied minimalism. But the name of the collection, Petra (poetic variant of the Italian word stone), alludes to the choice of creating an apparent roughness of the surfaces of the jewels.

The remarkable volume of the jewels, almost oversized, to underline a strong character of the collection. But the inside of the circles of bracelets and earrings is empty, and this allows you to wear these voluminous jewels without feeling their weight. The silver version collection includes a pendant, a ring, an earring and a bangle, while the gilded silver version is limited to an earring and a rigid bracelet.

Alexia Gryllaki’s kaleidoscope

//

For centuries, men have been able to express their creativity, together with absolute power. Things change. Alexia Gryllaki, a Greek born in Athens, has a degree in philosophy and history of science, a master’s degree in corporate finance and, as if that weren’t enough, in 2012 she obtained a diploma in gemology and jewelry design from the Gemological Institute of America in London. With this curriculum she worked for three years designing collections for Greek and Italian high-end jewelery brands and at a high-end gemstone retailer in London. Finally, in 2015 an official recognition arrived: the victory of the President’s International Design Award from the Cultured Pearl Association of America. It was time to enter the market.

Alexia Gryllaki lives between Athens and London. She designs jewels that are in balance between aesthetics and geometry, between nature and architecture, composition and restlessness. Some of her pieces seem to come out of a kaleidoscope, where the symmetry is always composed of surprising combinations of colors, which in this case are delicately alternating gems.

Circles and straight lines with Jolly Bijou

//

From the world of fashion in Paris and London to the world of jewelry in New York: the flight across the Atlantic Ocean was carried out by the French designer Caroline Denis, who in 2017 founded the Jolly Bijou brand in Brooklyn, where she lives and produces the his jewels. After 15 years of working with brands such as Saint-Laurent and Chloé, where she was responsible for image and visual identity, Caroline flew with her husband and children to the United States. First she went back to school at the Gemological Institute of America. Then, she put her experience and her new skills to good use.

Romantic Gothic for Lebole Gioielli

The Gothic style, alongside the passion for Japan and its myths, has always inspired Lebole Gioielli earrings. And this is not surprising, given that the designer Barbara Lebole loves to collect (artistic) skulls. Now within the Lebole Gioielli Gothic collection, presented a few years ago, the Hoop line is born. This is what is called a transversal collection, made up of small gold-plated silver circles, enriched with ever-changing elements.

Among the hanging elements are proposed the classic designs of the Romantic Gothic such as the heart, the four-leaf clover, the cross and, of course, the skull. To these are added the many colored and multi-shaped elements of the Gothic Mobile Characters such as the cameo, a fragment of coral, but also the elephant, Buddha, the heart, the leaf. A gothic extended also to subjects inspired by the Asian world, in short. The earrings are closed with simple drops in natural stones.

Ana Khouri between Maia and social responsibility

//

While there are those who emphasize using recycled gold to demonstrate her good intentions, there are also those, like Ana Khouri, who beat everyone with her Brazilian non-profit organization Projeto Ovo. The Brazilian designer based in New York has led her Projeto Ovo since 2014, which donates 100% of all sales proceeds to 75 NGOs. In short, Ana Khouri is a champion of goodness. But she is also a jewelry professional who likes to choose little traveled roads. For example, some jewelry is handcrafted in the United States with silver-based prong settings, a late 19th-century Ottoman technique called falamenk.

Among the most recent creations, for example, the Maia collection uses this goldsmith technique to propose wrapping earrings and rings crossed by circles formed by a spiral, in 18-karat gold, or enriched with diamonds and precious stones. In fact, the designer has a long experience in the choice of gems: after graduating from Gia and Parsons in New York, she has worked on single projects since 2002 and officially launched her eponymous line Maison in 2013. Needless to add, her work is made exclusively with 18K Fairmined, Fairtrade or platinum gold and precious stones of ethical and responsible origin.

Recarlo on Blue Carpet with seven rings

//

Presented in autumn 2020, the Blue Carpet collection by Recarlo is renewed with seven engagement rings: jewels that are positioned in a high-end range. The jewels are characterized by precious stones of color D (the best). Classic gifts for an engagement (but nothing prevents them from being given even for an anniversary, birthday or a special date), the rings are in white gold and have different cuts. Among the seven there is also an exception: a ring that next to two diamonds has a heart-cut sapphire in the center.

More generally, the Blue Carpet collection uses the classic aesthetic weapons of the Maison, that is white gold and diamonds and includes a set that consists of a necklace designed to enhance the décolleté and two pairs of pendant earrings. An alternative proposal is the shorter earring that you can wear together with the longer one, alternating according to your outfit and hairstyle.

Recarlo offers these jewels in the particular setting of the diamonds on the tips and with the precision of the cut: drop, navette and round. In the necklace, which ends with two separate diamond lines, these different cuts alternate and also differ in volume, with a riviére effect: they are larger in the front and smaller in the part that goes around the neck. A compositional complexity that is guaranteed by the professional tradition of the company and its craftsmen.

The sound-earrings by Nova Audio

/

There are earrings of all kinds. Until now, however, the talking earrings were missing. To fill the gap we thought Nova Audio, a start-up from Munich, which has designed a new kind of earrings. Nova Audio, in fact, has decided to propose hi-tech earrings, which are also earphones. The talking earrings use a pierced freshwater pearl to fit tiny electronic devices: a micro speaker, two microphones, an antenna, a Bluetooth chip, and a battery. Sound is transferred wirelessly from the phone, just like Apple’s AirPods, for example.

The earrings are gold-plated and cost around 500 euros: they connect to your smartphone to let you answer calls or listen to music, or simply wear them. Nova Audio is a start-up that debuted on Kickstarter and on the fundraising platform it immediately got 320 orders. Nova Audio’s is one of the many attempts to combine jewelry and technology. So far, the wedding hasn’t been a great success, but the sound earrings could hit the mark.

Freywille’s artistic almonds

//

The jewels by Freywille are inspired by the world of art: for over 30 years Friedrich Wille and the creative director, Simone Grünberger-Wille (they are married) have been offering jewels inspired by the work of great painters of the past. A passion and a mission that takes shape in an unmistakable style, created in 1980 and which is still characteristic for today’s brand. Enamels of different colors make up small surfaces that recall the paintings of famous artists. As in the new Almond collection, which includes earrings and pendants for necklaces.

Again the central motif is made in fired enamel and applied to the almond-shaped pendants, which are covered with a 24-karat gold plating. The compositions are inspired by painters such as Claude Monet and Gustav Klimt and, in this case the design features an additional element of the Freywille spirit: a pair of sphinx wings, which are applied on the top of the jewel.

Lantern earrings for Lebole

Lebole earrings ready for the tea ceremony. The new Lebole Gioielli collection called Tourou, which is the Japanese name for a traditional lantern made of stone, wood or metal and which is often found in traditional gardens, for example outside the pavilions where the tea ceremony takes place. This collection of lantern-shaped earrings is developed in two different pairs of asymmetrical pieces. The earrings are designed with a lantern on one side and a Japanese ideogram on the opposite side (Japan is the passion of the designer Barbara Lebole).

Orecchini con seta e nappa

The lanterns are decorated with stones and tassels as in oriental culture and are matched in colors with silk. The lanterns in Japanese gardens were introduced by Buddhist monks as prayer altars and are meant to symbolize the depth of the spirit. In fact, from a spiritual point of view they are a safe place where the spirit can rest during the mystical path in the garden. The lanterns installed in the less visible areas of the gardens symbolize an unexpected point of arrival and thus indicate an inner journey. The materials used in the collection are gold galvanized brass, natural stones and silk from an ancient Japanese kimono spread over wood.

Grainne Morton is a Northern Irish designer who loves composing her jewels as if they were paintings, unique pieces that attract attention and tell stories, for those who believe they are also amulets, and wink at Calder’s mobile sculptures. In particular, the technique of using small elements in balance such as on a scale is used for a wide range of earrings.

A predilection, that of composing jewelry also with vintage elements, which derives from the childhood spent with parents who she describes as creatives and lovers of antiques. Folklore, music and fairy tales from her native country did the rest. A tradition that Grainne Morton brought to Edinburgh, Scotland, where the designer studied and where she currently lives and works. The passion for collecting objects of the past, which she reuses together with gold-plated silver and semi-precious stones for her jewels, which she now also sells online, has become her trademark over the years.

High jewelry by Piaget for Mother’s Day

//

May is the month of roses, but also the time of the year when Mother’s Day occurs. A day that Piaget has decided to remember with two special jewels that combine these two aspects: it is the Piaget Rose pendant and earrings, with petals that open to reveal bright pink sapphires. The jewels are made of 18-karat white gold, with stylized rose buds, and are inspired by a particular flower: the Yves Piaget Rose, named in honor of the founder of the Swiss Maison, great lover of the botanical species.

The flowers of the jewels gently open their diamond-encrusted petals creating the illusion of a real flower. Pink sapphires pay homage to the unique and intense color of this unmistakable flower also appreciated for its 80 layers of petals and its delicious scent. Piaget Rose earrings reinterpret this iconic flower with a pink heart set between diamond petals that sparkle like dew in the morning sun. In a limited edition of 35 units, the earrings are set with 70 brilliant-cut diamonds (approx. 0.33 carats) and two pink sapphires (approx. 0.15 carats).

The jewels are in a limited edition of 50 units, the Piaget Rose pendant is embellished with 40 brilliant-cut diamonds (approximately 0.56 carats) and a sapphire in the deepest shade of pink (0.12 carats).
