Mattioli

The Peninsula Capital fund enters Mattioli

The Turin fashion house Mattioli has a new minority shareholder: the private equity fund Peninsula Capital. Il Sole 24Ore reported this, specifying that the brand led by Licia Mattioli would have sold 23% of the capital to the British fund, with the legal assistance of Gianni Origoni and Cleary Gottlieb. Mattioli is a brand born after the sale, in 2013, of the historic jewelery and goldsmith company Marchisio to the Richemont group, controlled by Luciano Mattioli. An operation that convinced her daughter, Licia Mattioli, to launch a new brand, which in just a few years has established itself on the market with innovative collections and a well-defined style.

The company’s activity, as well as in Turin (with 300 employees), also takes place in Valenza and in the Tarì district of Caserta, and also includes jewelery processing, which has pushed revenues to 100 million euros. The entry into the capital of Peninsula Capital, which in January entered with a 30% stake in the cosmetics big Veralab, would be preparatory to new investments by Mattioli, who wants to increase his presence on international markets. In past years Licia Mattioli was also a candidate for the presidency of Confindustria (Italian business association).

The gold of Italy is called Marchisio

The history of Italian jewelery has a name: Marchisio. Although the Turin-based company now works for third parties, it has a story that is worth telling: it even begins in 1649, when Gian Piero Marchisio, working with Joannin Marchisio, was appointed jeweler of the royal family. In 1859 Marchisio Giovanni was born, a sole proprietorship, and the jewelery obtained from the city of Turin the first prestigious 1TO hallmark, which attests to the company’s historical roots. Years later, his descendant, Felice Marchisio, also a goldsmith in Turin, moved to Paris to learn new processing techniques. It is no coincidence that most of the terms that are still used in Italian jewelry are of French origin.

But from Paris the Italian jeweler fled due to the siege of the Prussian troops (1870). Back in Turin, he founded Marchisio Bros, which then became the largest and most important jewelery in the city: in 1880 it had over one hundred workers. The history of jewelry, between ups and downs, wars and crises, however, has continued. Until the Second World War, which marked a setback. But in 1968 Giovanni Marchisio & co reopened its doors with the Mattioli family.

In 2013 a new step: the Richemont Group purchased the historic brand. The Swiss luxury giant, in fact, took over the shares of the Ancient Marchisio Company, acquired by the Mattioli family. Marchisio remained, however, a producer for several major international brands in the sector, including some from Richemont itself (Cartier, Piaget, Buccellati, Van Cleef & Arpels). Luciano Mattioli and his daughter Licia then created a new company, Mattioli. Federico Graglia

Smarties for Mattioli

The commonly known Smarties are small sugar-coated chocolate sweets of various colors. But now Smarties are also high-end jewels by Mattioli. They are not eaten, but worn. However, the new Smarties collection of the Turin brand recalls the shape of the homonymous colored chocolates covered with sugar icing, launched by Rowntree Mackintosh in 1937 and produced by Nestlé since 1988. But, to tell the truth, even if the name and the appearance of the jewels may recall a candy, the collection is inspired by refined architectures of the past. In any case, the jewels are handcrafted in 18K rose gold.

But, above all, they are composed of champagne topaz stones cut in a round shape like a brilliant. Each jewel is made up of numerous gems. For example, the ring takes at least a dozen. Necklace and bracelet many more. The stones are mobile, attached to the jewelry, but not set in a static crown. By moving the hand wearing the ring, for example, the topaz stones also swing.

Mattioli’s Gocce

The drops may have sprung from tears, or from rain, wine, blood. They can also be drops of happiness, of wax… Drops go through life in so many ways. One of these is the one identified by the Turinese Maison Mattioli for its new Gocce (drops) collection, which we present in preview. In this case the drops are empty and have the shape of small rings made with a very intensely colored 18-karat pink gold, already used for other Mattioli collections. The Gocce collection takes up the eternal shape of the chain, obviously with a personal interpretation. The dripping results in rings of different sizes combined with each other.

Orecchini in oro rosa a tre anelli
Orecchini in oro rosa a tre anelli

Even the sequence of the rings follows an apparent irregularity. A perfectly round ring, for example, is combined with another oval, an oblong, an asymmetrical one and so on. The closure of bracelets and necklaces is a snap hook. The pendant earrings, always in the shape of a chain, are available in three or five elements.

Mattioli’s Bonds

A bond, but without exaggerating. Because a relationship is beautiful if it is supportive, functional, harmonious. In short, a couple bond must be balanced. Just like a jewel, ready to be worn without forcing the wearer to change his way of being or, worse, to influence the choice of a dress. All this to talk about the new collection by Mattioli which is called Legami (means bonds). It is a variation on the theme of the chain, an object that in everyday life really serves to tie something-.

Orecchini Legami in oro rosa

However, the Legami collection does not force anyone, but freely invites whoever wants to wear it. It is made entirely of 18-karat rose gold, and is composed of necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings also embellished with white diamonds. A detail that distinguishes the chains of bracelets and necklaces from others concerns the junction between one ring and another, made with a small spiral, also in gold. For the bond to be even stronger.

A Vertigo for Mattioli

/

A new Mattioli collection arrives: it’s called Vertigo. Vertigo is the impression that you, or the environment around you, is moving or rotating. This sensation may be barely noticeable, or it may be so severe that it causes difficulty maintaining balance and carrying out daily activities. But vertigo is also a term used to indicate something pleasant, surprising, exciting. It is very likely that the new jewelry line of the Turin Maison refers to this second interpretation.

Anello in oro rosa con ametista

In any case, Vertigo is a prêt-à-porter collection in a minimalist style. The jewels, in fact, use the geometric shapes of the sixties and seventies in a selection of rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces that can be mixed and worn together. Mattioli’s new jewels are available in 18-karat rose gold and combined with baguette-cut semi-precious stones, such as amethysts, iolites, rhodolites, london topaz and sky.

Mattioli forever with the new Navettes

The new jewels by Mattioli.

According to legend, in jewelry the navette shape, also called marquise, is connected to the Marquise de Pompadour, official mistress of the French king Louis XV from 1745 to 1751. For the noblewoman, the man who went down in history as the King Sole asked that the diamonds be cut to model the mouth of the marquise. Since then that elongated shape, like two opposite brackets that match and end with two points, have been a cornerstone in the history of jewelry. And with good reason Mattioli has adopted that oblong shape for his Navettes collection, with new pieces presented in Vicenzaoro together with the Vertigo line (which we will discuss in another article).

Sautoir in oro rosa e madreperla
Sautoir in oro rosa e madreperla

The collection adopts 18-karat rose gold and is enriched by new models with natural mother-of-pearl along with edges of white diamonds, or with full pavé diamonds. However, the shape of the shuttles and of the shuttle rings is revisited with sinuous curves that further soften the geometry. The collection includes earrings, rings, rigid and soft bracelets, as well as sautoir necklaces handcrafted in the Maison’s Turin workshop.

Not surprisingly, the company boasts one of the best Italian manufacturers in the sector. And, in addition to offering collections with its own brand, it also produces on behalf of prestigious jewelery houses. “In a few years we have reached about 400 employees,” says the entrepreneur, soul, mind and heart of the brand, Licia Mattioli. Which, perhaps, in her heart she does not regret too much the sliding door that she removed a couple of years ago from the presidency of Confindustria (the Italian association of major companies) to which she was a candidate and of which she would have been natural president. Life, on the other hand, due to a cynical and cheating destiny (avoiding personalizing the story), has taken a different turn. A bad luck for the Italian business system, a fortune for the Mattioli company created only a few years ago.

Anello in oro rosa con pavé di diamanti
Anello in oro rosa con pavé di diamanti

The story is well known: Luciano Mattioli, Licia’s father, in 1995 took over the Antica Ditta Marchisio, a historic company founded in 1860, which worked for clients such as Bulgari, Cartier or Tiffany, just to name three. In 2013 the company was sold to the Swiss Richemont group. But from a spin-off of that same reality Mattioli was born. And it is for this reason that the Mattioli jewelry production still boasts the historic 1TO punch of 1860 on the yellow metal. Translated for non-experts: it remains the first company in Turin authorized to “sign” worked gold as a guarantee. With the pleasure of contradicting those who are amazed at the entrepreneurial skills of a woman (there are still some examples of the category), Licia Mattioli in less than ten years has therefore built a solid, innovative and dynamic brand.

In a few years he has made famous collections of fine jewelry such as Fireworks or Reve_r, not to mention the rings inspired by the paintings of Arcimboldo: often the jewels of the Maison are an elaboration from the work of great painters. Alongside these lines, Mattioli has proposed a copious range of fine jewelry, with collections such as Siriana, Yin Yang or the very successful Puzzle, which continues to renew itself (you can find them all on gioiellis.com). And Navettes also promises a similar longevity.

The new Mattioli Puzzle

An easy puzzle to solve. The Mattioli puzzle collection was born as an experiment, proposing modular jewels, precious but with the possibility of choosing from a wide range of shopping, elegant, but also suitable for young people, luxurious enough to be exhibited in a gala evening, but also so informal that it goes with a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. How to reconcile all this? It is a puzzle, in fact, as the name Puzzle of the collection suggests. Which, in fact, has small tiles that recall the elements that make up a puzzle. But, contrary to what one might have imagined, the puzzle was solved quickly: the pieces of the Puzzle were multiplied in a flurry of proposals that made the choice easier.

In short, there are elements in simple mother of pearl or covered with diamonds, in gold and enamel or on a reduced scale. Year after year, Mattioli adds other variations on the theme, to broaden the offer and complete the overall picture. The latest arrivals are Puzzle Matelassè, which features a process with the classic convexities with onyx, sea water and pink quartzite, and Puzzle Perline which uses white or black agate, with turquoise, golden obsidian or malachite and pink quartzite.

Mattioli’s new dreams

/

Rêver, in the language of Charles Baudelaire, describes the involuntary act of imagining during sleep. In the language of Licia Mattioli, however, the same word means a line of jewels that presents the stones set upside down, that is, with the tip protruding on the visible side of earrings or rings. The Rêve_r collection, presented in 2016 (we talked about it here), over time has added other dreams to its repertoire. And he continues to add, also because dreams are inexhaustible like the imagination of those who design jewels.

The jewels that expand the collection of the Turin-based Maison Mattioli are earrings that maintain the slightly punk spirit and shape of the original line unaltered. Two are rather large hoop earrings, made of gold and titanium with the addition of tanzanites or white and black diamonds. Other drop earrings also use tourmaline and amethyst, diamond garnets and kogolong.

Mattioli is inspired by Calatrava

//

Licia Mattioli has a passion for art, as well as for jewelry. For years, the collections of the Turin Maison (which has 30 goldsmiths and 280 employees) have often were been dedicated or inspired by great painters, from Arcimboldo to Lucio Fontana. Now, however, Mattioli introduces a new trend, that of architecture with the Calatrava set. At Voice Vicenzaoro, in fact, the brand presented a suite that enriches the Masterpieces collections: unique pieces that enhance the ancient Turin goldsmith tradition.

The set is inspired by the famous bridges designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, author of structures that combine reinforced concrete, steel and theatrical volumes. Bracelet, ring and earrings are made with precious pavé of white and black diamonds set on titanium with interventions in white (but not too much) 18 carat gold. The shape of the jewels, of course, uses those hyperbolic lines that have made Calatrava famous and that in the jewels are transposed into a geometry that does not go unnoticed.

The infinite Puzzle of Mattioli

/

It is the only Puzzle that will never be completed: the collection by Mattioli, a Turin-based brand specializing in jewelery with a strong personality, is one of the proposals that have experienced the greatest success. And that, periodically, are enriched with new pieces or, better, tiles, given that the name of the collection refers to table puzzles. Now the Puzzle Safari line is enriched with three new colors (pink nail polish, light blue nail polish and green nail polish).

Orecchini Puzzle in oro rosa e smalto
Orecchini Puzzle in oro rosa e smalto

One of the reasons that made Puzzle successful is that the elements, like those of the earrings, are interchangeable. Puzzle tiles can be easily replaced to match the earrings with the dress or simply because you like it. The jewels are sold together with a box that contains at least three spare parts, for example, with a mother of pearl version. But boxes with a dozen different spare parts are also on sale. Same goes for necklaces, for which the elements of the Puzzle collection become pendants. Finally, to remember that the jewels of this line are offered in three sizes: small, medium and large, obviously with different prices. For example, a box with 11 different spare parts for medium-sized earrings currently costs around 2,2500 euros.

The Aspis of Mattioli

///

Aspis is the scientific name of the common viper: a less dangerous snake than you think. In any case, the now classic Aspis collection by Mattioli will not scare anyone. The jewelry line has been enriched year after year and now consists of 17 pieces in pink and white gold, with the addition of diamonds. Why the name Aspis? The explanation is that rings, bracelet, necklaces and earrings have a shape inspired by the sinuous movements of the snake.

Anello Aspis in oro rosa e diamanti
Anello Aspis in oro rosa e diamanti

It is true to some extent. Certainly there is a wavy effect: the curves are soft and the rings, instead of a perfect circle, are bent slightly irregularly, without losing a regular wearability. The idea of deformed circles is also applied to the chains that make up the bracelet, necklaces and a pair of earrings. More generally, the Aspis collection by Mattioli is proposed as original, but not exaggerating, design jewelry: a sobriety that allows you to wear the pieces on any occasion without feeling out of place. As long as you don’t tell your friends that you have an aspis on your arm or neck, they might take you literally.

Punk luxury for Mattioli with the Eve_r collection

//

The style is always that of the Rêve_r collection: even for the new Eve_r line, in fact, Mattioli offers a kind of reverse view. As in the Rêve_r collection, therefore, Eve_r also uses the mounted stones making the lower, conical part emerge, which is usually hidden in the frame. And when stone is not used, gold takes the same shape, giving the jewel a punk style.

Orecchini con diamanti neri

As in other collections by Mattioli, a Turin-based brand that has managed to create an original space in the world of jewelry, even in this case, pink gold is the absolute protagonist. The gold studs, however, alternate with turquoise or black diamonds. The Eve_r collection consists of a choker, a chanel necklace with small rose gold studs and one with turquoise, earrings and rings in various sizes. Also in this case the rings are in rose gold only or with turquoise or black diamonds. There is also a single earring that simulates the effect of a triple pendant. For those who want a jewel that is different from the usual classic patterns.

The gold of Mattioli with 1To

//

The jewels of the Aruba collection by Mattioli, now also with mother of pearl, which are part of the 1To line ♦ ︎

It is known that Mattioli, has the historic punch 1TO. The punching is the goldsmith brand applied on a precious metal object to guarantee the sign and certify the manufacturer. In short, it is the official guarantee of quality E Mattioli on its jewels can affix the number 1 and the To, which stands for the city, Turin. In fact, since 1860, the Turin laboratory has specialized in the creation of goldsmith and jeweler, with artisans skilled in the processing of gold in full cycle: from the merger of the ingot, to the jewel.

For this reason Mattioli decided to call a series of gold jewelery with the name of 1To.

This line includes several collections, obviously always made with gold as the protagonist. One of these lines is called Aruba, a name that has nothing to do with the ancient goldsmith tradition, but evokes beaches and the sea of the Caribbean island. But a place that perhaps inspired the design of the Mattioli jewelry by Aruba, given that the round lines of the pink and burnished gold remind us of the atolls and waves of the ocean. Rudy Serra

New Life for Mattioli

//

Life, the new collection of Mattioli inspired by the myth of the tree of life presented at VicenzaOro ♦ ︎

Proposing new products is a matter of life for a jewelery brand. And even for a woman, wearing a jewel that fits her personality is a matter of life. But in the new Life collection by Mattioli, the subject is another. The collection, in fact, is inspired by the ancient symbolism of the tree of life. That it is not a vegetable, but a symbol: the tree of life is a recurrent element in various religions, mythologies and philosophies. Sometimes it is associated with the more generic term of a sacred tree.

In this case the tree of life is particularly tenacious: the pink gold is bound with a resistant and light material, titanium.

This metal, in fact, has been used by Mattioli in the Puzzle, Siriana and Yin Yang collections. In this case, however, gray titanium and pink gold are combined with white diamonds, in a tangle of roots and branches: the tree of life that becomes a precious, large jewel.

Mattioli four seasons

/

The complete collection of Mattioli dedicated to the Renaissance painter Arcimboldo, famous for his still lifes of vegetables and fruits that form faces ♦

After Autumn comes Autumn and then Winter. It is obvious, but for Mattioli the four seasons are those of the famous allegories of the Renaissance painter Arcimboldo. Here is the inspiration for the homonymous collection presented in 2015, but gradually enriched. They are jewels with a complex structure: instead of fruit, flowers, leaves and knotty woods, in this case they are precious and semiprecious stones with different cuts and color combinations to define the face.

The company from Turin also presented a set of Arcimboldini which includes pendant, earrings and ring decorated with small baskets of flowers and fruit: rubies, quartz, tourmaline, opal and amethyst cabochon cut, framed by emerald and peridot leaves, mounted in gold yellow, pink and white give life to the jewels. In Tibet with Mattioli

/

The Tibet collection in pink gold and diamonds signed by Mattioli is enriched with new pieces ♦ ︎

You do not need to climb the peaks of Tibet to find contact with the ancient culture of the region clinging to the Himalayas. Presented at VicenzaOro 2018, the Tibet collection signed by Mattioli is linked to the tradition of Tibetan women to tie an ever-longer thread to the finger: each lap symbolizes a year of happiness with one’s husband. But it is a thread that rotates without beginning or end, a symbol of the circularity of life. This ring is then transmitted from mother to daughter before the wedding. It can be made with different materials, but Licia Mattioli has opted for rose, white or yellow gold.

The collection, which is obviously called Tibet, picks up the Tibetan tradition and reinterprets it, with the addition of small diamonds. The ring can be chosen with more or less wires, therefore with a more or less wide band. The apparent randomness of the plot gives the jewel a spontaneous appearance, in addition to recalling its original meaning. Lavinia Andorno

Mattioli Yin Yang

/

The opposites come together in jewelry in the Yin Yang collection by Mattioli ♦ ︎

Opposites attract, according to an old proverb. It is not always true, at least as regards the relationship of the couple. It is true, however, according to Mattioli, the Turin-based Maison who presented the Yin Yang collection. This is the concept that originated in ancient Chinese philosophy. Yin is black, yang is white: the idea of two opposites that are complementary most likely comes from the observation of the day that turns into night and night that turns into day. But also from opposites like man and woman, cold and warm, negative and positive.

And so this the Yin Yang collection presents rings that intertwine different shapes and surfaces, but united.

The contrast, for example, is that between the smooth surface of the metal and the pavé of diamonds. Or the surface of small white diamonds that contrasts with that of black diamonds, the pink gold intertwined with the same rhodium-plated metal. But also brown diamonds, iolites and tzavoriti. In addition to the rings, the collection includes a bracelet and earrings in rose gold and diamonds, also suspended between the yin world and the yang world, but neither is destined to prevail. Mattioli’s Puzzle widens

New pieces for the Puzzle collection by Mattioli. Here are the new jewels ♦ ︎
The real puzzle is to guess when the Mattioli Puzzle will be finished. The collection, which takes its name from the concept of small pieces that make up the jewels, continues to accumulate pieces. Every year, in short, Mattioli adds other pieces that are added, like a puzzle that changes in size and that originally was dedicated to three artists such as Kandinsky, Mondrian and Calder.
In addition to the mother-of-pearl and wood colored on rose gold, small diamonds were added in 2018 that follow the profile of the claws that immobilize the puzzle-piece, or the outer circle of the ring that circles around the fingers. The same elements are used to connect the rose gold ovals that make up the chains of the necklaces. Four different colors are used: bright pink, turquoise blue, black and the classic white mother of pearl. Without forgetting that one of the peculiarities of the collection is the possibility for some jewels to change the card and, therefore, to match the best color to one’s dress. It’s a solution. But not of the puzzle. Giulia Netrese
