Mathon’s abstractions

The collections by the Parisian jeweler Mathon: gold, diamonds and colored lacquers ♦ ︎
It seems like a story you can read in the books of George Simenon, except that in this case there are no crimes or even the commissioner Maigret. There is, however, Paris. In a courtyard of a classic Parisian palace, a stone’s throw from the Palais, a goldsmith’s workshop was opened in 1931. It is easy to imagine the laborious work of the Mathons, perhaps with a baguette ready for lunch that comes out of the bag.

The breakthrough took place in the seventies, when Roger Mathon took over his uncle’s study and started working for the great Parisian jewelers. In short, the laboratory acquires skills and produces quality pieces. In 1997, the activity took off with Frédéric Mathon, who took the lead and expanded his gaze beyond the Parisian skyline. Among other things, between 1994 and 1996 Frédéric Mathon is also president of the Ecole de la Bijouterie and de la Joaillerie of rue du Louvre and in 2005 he was named President of BJOP, the goldsmith’s union founded in 1960. In addition to creating very elaborate pieces, Mathon today also designs precious, but more modern collections. As one of the latest productions, the Verdeau line, where gold and diamonds are accompanied by the bright colors of lacquer. Almost a tribute to abstract painting of the 1930s.

The Passage collection, on the other hand, is inspired by Parisian covered passages, such as La La Galerie Vivienne. The collection takes up the Art Deco motif of the Manhattan collection, created by Catherine Mathon in 2007. The Vivienne ring, for example, is composed as a pavé with mother-of-pearl contrasting with turquoise, with pyrite flakes instructed in lapis lazuli and diamonds, such as the sky that appears through the vault of the Vivienne Passage when you look up.

Liquid movement for PdPaola

/

Being in motion, therefore the opposite of stillness, laziness, boredom. The concept of movement is not easy to translate into jewelry, but it is what the Motion collection, a liquid dance by the Spanish brand PdPaola, proposes. The design of the jewels, explains the Maison, follows a wave motif, “which evokes the dance of water in an ocean that never stands still”. In fact, the rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces proposed use circles that are not perfectly flat, but with supple curves, which draw an idea of movement.

Valentine’s Day in Hawaii with Buccellati

Valentine’s Day in Hawaii. It is a journey that can be tackled even without moving from home or, better, by simply moving to a jewelry store. The magic is signed by Buccellati, who created the new Hawaii Diamond Hearts collection for the feast of lovers. It is a line that the Milanese Maison has created for almost a century, in the 1930s, and is inspired by Hawaiian flower garlands. Flowers and love, in fact, are a close-knit couple.

The Hawaii Diamond Hearts line by Buccellati is made up of small circles of twisted wire in yellow gold. The Hawaii Diamond Hearts line comes in a necklace, pendant earrings and bracelet and is accompanied by a launch campaign on digital channels starring Charlie Weiss, a German model already in the spotlight for her beauty. The campaign concept revolves around red, the color of love and passion, with shots and videos that give life to a subtle and refined game of seduction interpreted with a young and fresh attitude.

Salvini’s Magic for February 14th

What is love, if not magic? Nobody knows how the spark fires, nobody has discovered when passion ignites and nobody can predict the effect of an encounter before it happens. Maybe it’s really Cupid’s magic. But also a jewel can contribute to making a relationship, an appointment or the party dedicated to lovers, Valentine’s Day, magical. Precisely for this reason Salvini, a brand of the Damiani group, proposes the Magia collection for February 14 (but not only).

Necklaces, rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings are made of white gold, according to the style of the house. In jewelry a central stone is surrounded by small round cut diamonds, which increase the brightness.

Nanis, rutilated quartz fantasy

///

Rutilated quartz is a different stone from the others. While for most gems the purity and transparency of the stone is taken into account, for rutilated quartz what you like is precisely the inclusions. Nanis knows this well, proposing a new collection that has this gem at its center. Rutilated quartz, in fact, is a variety that contains needle-like inclusions of rutile, which can be golden, or silver, pink, copper red or deep black, which are seen in transparency in the stone, with always different variations.

The idea of discovering this imaginative natural creation inspired Laura Bicego, designer and founder of Nanis, who designed an entire collection based on rutilated quartz together, as usual for the Maison, with engraved gold and small diamonds. The quartz of the jewels is proposed in different versions, golden, pink, brown or with black inclusions. The jewels are made with a single shade, or with contrasting colors, up to clusters with a mix of shades that makes the jewels different from each other.

Air Naples with Miseno

The jewels of Miseno, from Naples to the USA with a bit of incorporated mythology.

Miseno is a fraction of the municipality of Bacoli, near Naples. The name of the small town derives from the Latin sinus militum. Virgilio remembers the Miseno trombettiere of Enea, which according to legend was buried in that area after having challenged Tritone: in fact Capo Miseno with its flat top recalls the shape of an ancient mound. The Neapolitan Antonio Cardamuro was inspired by that legend in the choice of his brand, which is called Miseno, in fact.

After working for Maison such as Buccellati, Bulgari and Bedat, the designer decided to propose a brand on the international markets, in particular the American one, that was a tribute to its origins and Mediterranean Italianness. Among the latest productions at Misano are collections made in white, yellow or 18-carat gold, with stones such as amethyst, blue topaz citrine, blue sapphires and diamonds. Rings, earrings, bracelets, and pendants are often inspired by the warmth of the Neapolitan sun. The style is very rich and a bit elaborate, as often liked by those with many dollars, but without forgetting the Neapolitan roots, when using coral and turquoise.

Needle, thread and Keep Out

//

The sewing thimble turns into a silver pendant with Keep Out ♦ ︎
Who sews by hand, with needle and thread, knows that it is easy to sting a finger. For this reason women have been using a small but useful object for centuries: the thimble. That is a metal cover for the tip of the finger that pushes the needle into the fabric. This simple but effective object is at the base of the idea of Keep Out, brand of Casale Monferrato (Piedmont, Italy), which has decided to use the shape of the thimble as a pendant for its silver jewels. Among other things, in South America the thimble was also an object that once grandmothers gave to their nephews who were get to married, as a object symbol that protects from the bites of life.

How to choose hoop earrings?

Why do hoop earrings never go out of fashion? Think about it: hoop earrings are a type of jewel that goes through fashions, years, decades, even centuries. You can find photos of hoop earrings from half a century ago, but also from the nineteenth century and even among archaeological finds. The question is: why are hoop earrings so successful? And which kind of hoop earrings is better to wear? Let’s go step by step and try to answer these questions if you are interested in buying or wearing hoop earrings.

Orecchini in argento e cristalli
Orecchini in argento e cristalli di Lotus Silver

First of all, it is true that hoop earrings never go out of fashion, but not just all the same. There are small ones, which just surround the lobe. And there are medium-sized earrings, up to those with a large or very large circumference. If you want to wear a pair, however, you need to pay attention to some aspects.
Lady Gaga con orecchini di Messika al The National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala a New York
Lady Gaga con orecchini di Messika al The National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala a New York

Dimensions. How to choose the size of the hoop earrings? The answer is easy: you have to choose a pair of earrings proportionate to your height. If you don’t go over a meter and a half, for example, it would be better to avoid very large hoop earrings: they would be disproportionate. If, on the other hand, you are above average, you can dare and choose earrings with a noticeable circumference. But, again, think about it: a jewel of this type will emphasize your height. If this is not what you want to emphasize, opt for a medium size.

Jessie Harris, orecchini Helix

Face shape. The height and size of the earrings must fit together. But don’t forget to observe the shape of your face: the hoop earrings are perfect for who with an elongated face, but they are not perfect for women with a rounder, apple-shaped head. In this case, if you like hoop earrings, opt for a small size that does not amplify and magnify the shape of your face.

Weight. Wearing hoop earrings will give movement and shine to your face, but after a few hours you may regret your decision. Pay attention to the weight that will push the lobe towards your shoulders before buying earrings of this type. But don’t worry: there are also large and light earrings on the market.

The metal. Gold or silver? Obviously the choice is also conditioned by your budget. A pair of silver hoop earrings costs less than a similar one, but in gold. Those in silver, however, could be heavier, especially if you buy them from not too sophisticated jewelers.

Allergies. The earrings are in close contact with the skin. Anyone suffering from allergies must be careful not to choose metal alloys that can induce skin irritation: often even in gold earrings there may be metals incompatible with your skin. If you have allergy problems, don’t neglect the choice of steel earrings, a metal that is considered hypoallergenic.

Clothing. On this aspect there is little to say: hoop earrings go well with almost any type of clothing. Certainly, it is more difficult to wear large earrings together with a formal dress. Unless you are a graduate in non-conformism.

When to wear hoop earrings. Always, of course. A classic pair of gold earrings, for example, does not clash with any occasion. Also in this case, however, we must make an exception for maxi earrings: for a business meeting or for very formal ceremonies they are not recommended.

Aucella in red from four generations

Coral and cameos: they are the specialty of one of the most traditional jewelers of Torre del Greco: Aucella

Coral for four generations grown in the Neapolitan pole of this art: Aucella has been part of this elite for eighty years. In Torre del Greco, home of the goldsmith tradition that focuses on the red fruit of the sea, the Aucella family has worked among corals, cameos and jewels from 1930 to today. And in the spring of 2019 Vincenzo Aucella was elected president of Assocoral, the Italian association that brings together producers of coral and cameos jewelry. Aucella’s define their passion, with an ironic habit (typical of the Neapolitans), “a mysterious disease”.

Fortunately, the cure for this mysterious disease has not been found, and the history of these coral specialists, born when this marine material was still found in the Gulf of Naples, has yet to end. The coral is worked smooth or engraved, for jewelry or cameos. The jewels, originally created on customer request, are now enriched with natural stones, diamonds, South Sea pearls and Tahiti. But alongside the unique pieces, the brand also inaugurated a less demanding line of products, in silver, with the name 925byAucella. Those you see below, however, combine coral with gold, diamonds and precious stones. In addition to coral, Aucella also produces cameos. Among the specialties of the house there is also the making of cameos starting from a photograph: much better than a selfie.

Angeletti, a historic jewelery shop in via Condotti, in Rome, which also looks to the foreign market ♦

Via Condotti is the luxury shopping street in Rome. Here, in 1940, the Angeletti boutique was opened. The jewelry has sold the best brands for years (and continues to sell jewels of brands such as Pasquale Bruni or Chantecler) and, subsequently, has extended its offer to creations signed by the Roman Maison itself. Over time, the family of jewelers has developed an autonomous proposal and style.

Today Marcello Angeletti is joined by the third generation, with Roberto and Rina, with the aim of making the brand better known abroad. Angeletti’s jewels are modern, but with respect for tradition. Rings, earrings and bracelets use gold and precious stones, such as diamonds, and semiprecious stones, such as tourmaline and amethyst, mother of pearl, rock crystal, or coral. In addition, they boast a handcrafted finish, but are also able to offer a consistent quality standard. The prices are compatible with those of the luxury in via Condotti.

Gimor, spirit of Milan

/

Directly from the 1960s, the style and precious sobriety of Gimor, a brand that sums up the Milanese spirit ♦ ︎
Sixties, seventies, eighties: those decades are back to get liking, especially in fashion. But also in the jewelry. Keeping that spirit, the years in which Italian design is affirmed, is one of the characteristics of Gimor, a brand born in Milan in the Sixties on the initiative of Giuseppe Moruzzi. The jeweler has infused that style which, even today, is considered a reference point for an entire category of designers.

Naturally, over the years Gimor has reworked the way of making jewelry, adapting it to our times. But looking at the jewels of the Milanese brand is easy to recognize the starting DNA. And more, from a topographical point of view, is right near Piazza Duomo, the heart of the Italian capital city of fashion and design, but also of luxury. Appreciated for its modern but sober style, just like that of the Lombard city, Gimor also had the idea of looking abroad, where he found appreciation for his collections like Lanternina, where geometric lines and a certain irony they are accompanying. This is also a sign of Milanese style.

Limitless Gabriela Rigamonti

The jewels of Gabriela Rigamonti, manager, designer and globetrotter ♦ ︎

To say that Gabriela Rigamonti is dynamic is an understatement. On its website, for example, it is written that “her tireless instinct to always look for novelties to propose, pushes her to create over 500 new models a year, which meet the needs of the most diverse international markets”. Half a thousand new jewels in 12 months is an activity rate that should be reported Guinnes Book of Records.

In any case, the style of her brand, born in Vicenza in 2000, is affected by her globetrotter vocation: she describes herself as the fruit of a multicultural family (the brothers and the family live in four different countries), and therefore she is used to to travel. She speaks four languages and, she says, is learning two more. She attended art history courses in Florence, marketing in the USA and design in Milan. In 1995, at the age of 26, she decided to settle in Vicenza where ahe started working as manager and designer for a large jewelry company. And this is another reason that prompted her to travel around the world. All this experience accumulated in a short time, combined with the energy charge and a strong sensitivity, promptly pushed her brand to be distributed in 24 countries of the world. But it can also be purchased online.
