Seven rules for storing jewelry

Learn how to keep your jewelry tidy and, above all, keep it in the best possible way. Here are seven rules on how to store your jewelry ♦

How to store your jewelry? It is no less important aspect of choice and purchase. Admit it: who of you has never lost a ring? And to those who did not find one, not worn for some time, with some trace of oxidation (if it is not gold). Or worse yet, not to find it right? Here are the tips to properly preserve your treasure.

Gioielli e velluto
Gioielli e velluto

First rule: hurray to softness

Although most of the jewelry is made of metal, it does not mean that rings or bracelets can not be damaged. Take an example from jewelers and avoid wooden or hard plastic boxes. A velvet lining is ideal, but alternatively a soft and consistent fabric that covers the container is fine. It may happen to drop or even throw your jewelry at the end of the day: they will land on the soft without scratching.

Box troppo affollato
Box troppo affollato

Second rule: sufficient space

If you really care about your jewels, do not crowd them all together in an inextricable tangle. The drawer or box in which you store your bijoux must have enough space. The jewels should not touch each other because they can be scratched. Leave a few centimeters between one jewel and another: so it will be even easier to decide which one to wear.

Third rule: dry climate

Jewels are as if they suffer from rheumatism: they hate moisture. Extreme climates, too cold or hot, are also not recommended. Also, they should not rest in direct sunlight: oxidation or discoloration are damage caused by poor environmental conditions. Be careful, though: opals and cameos require a little more moisture to prevent cracking.

Fourth rule: cleaning

It is not your fault: it is that the hands, neck, arms convey dust and body fat and acids in your jewelry. In the long run these substances can settle on the container where you store the jewelry. With two effects: add an unpleasant odor to your jewelry in the long run and, ruin the aesthetics (goodbye glossy sheen). Cleaning jewels regularly before storing them is a good rule for long-lasting storage. To find out more read also how to clean a jewel.

Fifth rule: hang the necklaces

A necklace, especially those long enough, will be uncomfortable in a small box. Furthermore, it risks tangling. Some hooks inside the closet doors can easily solve the problem, as long as there is enough space to not rub the jewels against the clothes fabrics. Attention, however, to the choice of the hook: it must not be too small to ruin the rings of the necklace.

Sixth rule: diamonds separated

Diamonds are beautiful but, unintentionally, they can be bad with other jewels. Since the diamond is the hardest stone, they can risk scratching other gems or metals. For this reason, if you have jewelry with diamonds it is better to keep them apart or, at least, at a distance from others. The same reasoning applies to sapphires, which have a hardness that is very close to that of diamonds.

Seventh rule: felt or cotton for silver

Silver jewels are the most widespread. But they can oxidize. So pay attention: better keep them wrapped in a clean cotton or felt cloth. They will be more sheltered from the oxygen contained in the air and, in case they get ruined, they will stay away from other bijoux. Here is a trick: use those small bags that are found when you buy electronic items and that serve to absorb excess moisture.

The Hollywood diamonds

The jewels of Hollywood stars, including diamonds that seal the marriage and others that do not serve to stop the breakup

It seems that jewels, especially those with diamonds, are the favorite partners of Hollywood actresses and starlets and, more generally, in the entertainment world. Of course, they are also faithful and sought after companions of other women, especially those who have a good financial availability, or the good fortune to be with a rich partner. But, of course, in the entertainment world jewels are more ostentatious, almost necessary to shine even more on the red carpet. Unfortunately, these super jewels do not always serve to strengthen weddings and engagements. There is no need to go back to the legendary gifts of the passionate and quarrelsome couple Richard Burton to Liz Taylor, based on Bulgari bracelets and rings: jewels have never gone out of fashion, as evidenced by Mariah Carey’s decision to keep, despite the breakup of the engagement with James Packer, the ring he had given her as a token of love. It is a jewel worth 7 million dollars, for 35 carats.

A mind-boggling figure that must have made Beyoncé’s hair stand on end: Jay-Z in fact turned to Lorraine Schwartz for an 18-carat diamond ring worth $ 5 million. A figure, 5 million, which would sum up the total value of the rings Victoria Beckham received from her husband David. Not to mention other famous rings, such as Khloe Kardashian ($ 4 million), Katy Perry ($ 1.2 million). But diamonds are not always enough to consolidate a relationship. The engagement, of Lady Gaga, for example, did not last long despite the heart-shaped ring given in 2015 by Taylor Kinney to the singer-actress, who had commented on Instagram: “He gave me his heart on Valentine’s Day and I I said YES! “).

We have already talked about Kim Kardashian, who was robbed of jewelry years ago in Paris: her ex-husband, Kanye West, had designed the engagement ring with Lorraine Schwartz, made with a 15-carat diamond worth 1.6 million dollars. Not only that, just a few days before the robbery, the rapper had given the famous star a new ring worth 4.8 million dollars for 20 carats. Published on Facebook, the photo of the ring teased the Parisian thieves.

Another top jewel is the one received by the actress and model, Blake Lively. Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds gave her a $ 2.5 million, 12-carat stone. Another 2 million, on the other hand, was spent by Ashton Kutcher for Mila Kunis. The same price paid by Donald Trump for Melania (but in this case the show has nothing to do with it). The ring bought by Tom Cruise for Katie Holmes at the time cost a little less: 1.5 million dollars. So much, however, compared to Michael Douglas, that he spent “only” 1 million on a vintage 1920 jewel given to his Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Unfortunate rings: Jennifer Aniston received a 1 million dollar diamond from Justin Theroux: 8 carats but, above all, double the value given by Brad Pitt to Angelina Jolie (other times), designed by the same actor and valued half a million dollars. But, unfortunately, the ring did not help avoid divorce. Another ring that did not bring luck: the one, mentioned, that Taylor Kinney had given to Lady Gaga. Designed by Lorraine Schwartz, it had a heart-shaped diamond, valued at approximately $ 360,000. But the wedding has vanished.

After all, there is no need to spend millions: “only” 120 thousand dollars cost Adam Schulman the ring for Anne Hathaway: a little less than that for Lady Gaga but, on the other hand, after nine years the marriage resists.

Other rings: on April 28, 2018, actress and singer Lea Michele announced her engagement to businessman Zandy Reich, with photos of her ring posted on Instagram. They got married on March 9, 2019 in Napa, California.

In December 2019, Emma Stone also announced her engagement to Dave McCary on Instagram, albeit with a diamond and pearl ring.

Graff’s wild flowers

//

A rose is a rose. It is a passion flower, but also very formal. Wild field flowers, on the other hand, are freedom. And women today, more than ever, want to be free. Who knows if it is this idea that accompanied the famous London jeweler Graff, famous above all for his diamonds, to design the new Wild Flower collection, just in time for the blossoming of the new spring. A little surprisingly, the Wild Flower collection does not use the colors of wild flowers, but is entirely made of 18-karat white gold with the addition of diamonds.

Rings, pendants, bracelets and earrings obviously have the shape of five-petaled flowers. In the center there is a brilliant-cut diamond, while the petals are composed of a pavé of stones. The five petals also offer an asymmetry that helps to move the volumes of the jewels. Inspired by English gardens, well-kept but without the geometries that distinguish the Italian or French ones, the jewels also offer different combinations, with variations among the jewels, and groupings of flowers that recall the flowering bushes in spring.

Gold, diamonds and enamel in Crieri’s C-Type

It is called C-Type. It is a line of jewelry that marks an innovation in the world of Crieri. The Maison of Valenza, in fact, owes much of its fame to the specialization in tennis-like jewels, in particular bracelets and necklaces in white gold and diamonds. For some time, however, Crieri has opened its doors to other types, with extremely luxurious jewels, such as the Bogotà collection in Colombian diamonds and emeralds, or with a completely different style, as in the case of the C-Type line. The name also indicates the choice to inspire the shape of the jewels to the letter C, initial of Crieri.

The consonant was subjected to a design cure to evaluate and recompose the geometry of the alphabetic letter. The resulting jewels are thus composed of soft and modern lines, with diamonds and precious stones set and in 18-karat gold. Rings, earrings and pendants in white, yellow or pink gold. Lines of stones, one next to the other, make up the C, in a pavé of diamonds and also proposed with sapphires in shades of pink or blue. In an enameled version, the blue color sets the shape of the white gold pendant.

Roberto Coin on the moon with Pois Moi

///

One of the funniest collections by Roberto Coin, Pois Moi, is renewed and adds a new line. Pois Moi Luna adds variations to the collection that was born from the inspiration of the old sixties television screens. Those square boxes, but with a rounded edge, have been transformed by the Venetian jeweler into a series of jewels with a hint of non-conformism. In the first version of Pois Moi, gold was an absolute element. Then came a second more luxurious release, covered with a diamond pavé, also with a retro flavor, but this time with a touch of the Thirties.

Pois Moi Luna, third version, instead has a retro-futuristic approach: they mix the charm of vintage with spatial atmospheres, with jewels that reproduce the lunar surface with its gold craters, surrounded by a pavé of diamonds or by the smooth surface of the metal in pink, yellow, or white version. A motif that is also repeated inside the jewels, with the result of lightening their weight and making them more pleasant to wear.

Sara Weinstock, California dreaming

The California sun, the yellow of gold, the white of diamonds like the foam on the edge of the waves. These are the three elements that accompany Sara Weinstock, a jewelry designer who works in Malibu, near Los Angeles, even though her jewels are distributed all over the world, including Russia, Azerbaijan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia. Her career started late, after graduating in communication, acting as an actress and modeling, getting married, having two daughters and having separated from her husband. At that point, about 15 years ago, she decided to free her creativity (a family gift: mother and grandmother were painters) and to devote herself to jewelry.

She studied at the Gemological Institute of America and then worked with a jewelry designer, who taught her the practice of the trade. Her first collections were based on gold, colored stones and symbolic shapes, from hand to lucky eye. But in the end she chose the path of jewels unrelated to symbols and icons. Gold and diamonds have also attracted the attention of the celebrities who populate that area of California, such as Amy Adams, Priyanka Chopra, Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Olivia Munn, Christina Aguilera, Crissy Teigen and Jennifer Lopez.

Mathon’s abstractions

The collections by the Parisian jeweler Mathon: gold, diamonds and colored lacquers ♦ ︎
It seems like a story you can read in the books of George Simenon, except that in this case there are no crimes or even the commissioner Maigret. There is, however, Paris. In a courtyard of a classic Parisian palace, a stone’s throw from the Palais, a goldsmith’s workshop was opened in 1931. It is easy to imagine the laborious work of the Mathons, perhaps with a baguette ready for lunch that comes out of the bag.

The breakthrough took place in the seventies, when Roger Mathon took over his uncle’s study and started working for the great Parisian jewelers. In short, the laboratory acquires skills and produces quality pieces. In 1997, the activity took off with Frédéric Mathon, who took the lead and expanded his gaze beyond the Parisian skyline. Among other things, between 1994 and 1996 Frédéric Mathon is also president of the Ecole de la Bijouterie and de la Joaillerie of rue du Louvre and in 2005 he was named President of BJOP, the goldsmith’s union founded in 1960. In addition to creating very elaborate pieces, Mathon today also designs precious, but more modern collections. As one of the latest productions, the Verdeau line, where gold and diamonds are accompanied by the bright colors of lacquer. Almost a tribute to abstract painting of the 1930s.

The Passage collection, on the other hand, is inspired by Parisian covered passages, such as La La Galerie Vivienne. The collection takes up the Art Deco motif of the Manhattan collection, created by Catherine Mathon in 2007. The Vivienne ring, for example, is composed as a pavé with mother-of-pearl contrasting with turquoise, with pyrite flakes instructed in lapis lazuli and diamonds, such as the sky that appears through the vault of the Vivienne Passage when you look up.

Jewels and chocolate, the recipe of Le Vian

/

It is not true that diamonds are the true friends of women. Because true friends women have two: jewels and chocolate. Putting these two joys together would therefore be the best. And this is what the American brand Le Vian and the Belgian Godiva have come up with, who have collaborated for a new collection in view of Valentine’s Day. The combination is not accidental: Le Vian, in fact, is famous for the use of brown diamonds, in a shade called Chocolate Diamonds.

Godiva, on the other hand, is one of the best known chocolate brands. The newly presented jewelry collection is inspired by Godiva’s sweets with three chocolate inspired necklaces, set with brown and gold diamonds. For example, the Ganache Heart pendant features a heart pendant set with brown diamonds on a 14-karat yellow gold chain. The Strawberry and Chocolate Heart is another heart pendant, set in rose gold with rubies and brown diamonds: it is inspired by Godiva’s strawberry crème tarte. The Truffle pendant, on the other hand, is crafted to resemble Godiva’s milk chocolate truffle, but is composed of chocolate diamonds and nude diamonds (in lighter shades) set in 14-karat gold.

The alchemy of light by De Beers

////

As a reflection of light penetrates a stone and is reflected outside with a glow, it is almost magic. And a spell needs a wizard. Or an alchemist. In the case of diamonds, the most famous alchemist is, perhaps, De Beers. The company, born as a specialist in the extraction of diamonds and then also a jewelery house, presented its high jewelery collection called The Alchemist of Light in Paris. It is destined to last a long time: it consists of 45 unique pieces, divided into seven lines. Two have been presented at the moment.

These are the Atomique line and Light Rays. The other five collections are expected for the summer, on the occasion of next season’s Couture. Atomique is made up of seven pieces, in white diamonds and 18k white gold. The idea, as the name suggests, is a design inspired by the molecular structure of the diamond. The most important piece in this line is a collar necklace, made up of 1,907 round brilliant diamonds surrounding a flawless 18.57 carat internal diamond.

The Light Rays line, on the other hand, is completely different. It is made up of nine pieces, but uses color. To be precise, the jewels are made with natural brown, orange or yellow diamonds, together with anodized titanium in shades of brown and yellow. The idea, in this case, is to evoke the morning sunlight, what photographers call the golden hour. But they are also the colors of autumn, according to interpretative tastes.

The waves of Chaumet with the Déferlante capsule collection

///

Could not miss the tiara in the new high jewelry collection by Chaumet, called Déferlante. The name, in French, is often used to indicate a wave that breaks on the beach or on the rocks. And, in fact, the jewels have an appearance that recalls the undulating lines of the sea, as if they were composed of the light foam that forms on the edge of the waves. Instead, it’s about diamonds. The capsule collection presented during the Couture week continues the maison’s previous collection, which was inspired by the jewelry style of Napoleon and Giuseppina (with transformable tiara and jewels).

Even among the new pieces of the Déferlante collection there are transformable jewels, as in the case of the ring made up of diamonds with different cuts. Among the jewels, the three-row diamond necklace stands out, with diamonds that flutter and chase each other. The jewel is made up of two 3.57 and 1.05 carat pear-shaped D VVS1 diamonds, one 1.56 carat emerald cut D VVS2 diamond, one 1.54 carat emerald cut E VVS1 diamond, one E diamond 1.54-carat emerald-cut VVS2, a 1.51-carat emerald-cut VVS1 diamond, a 0.70-carat square-cut F VVS2 diamond, brilliant-cut, princess-cut, pear-shaped, square-cut and baguette-cut diamonds. In short, stones of the highest quality and captivating design. The jewels also enhance the lightness thanks to the use of fils couteaux, a refined technique for a setting reduced to just three prongs for the stones.

Diamonds: are better originals or fake?

There are stones that look like diamonds, so much so that it is difficult to distinguish. For example, the moissanite. It could be an interesting choice, but before you must find out what is the moissanite ♦

Diamonds: better real or fake? The question is not provocative. There are those who buy diamond jewelry to also obtain an object that maintains (or increases) its value over time. And who, on the other hand, simply wants something that sparkles on the finger or neck. In this case, we can consider “fake” diamonds, those that go by the name of synthetic moissanite (there is also the natural one).

Un anello format Harry Winston e disegnato per Lisa Christiansen. Un grande diamante con zaffiri e Moissanite
A Harry Winston ring designed for Lisa Christiansen. A large diamond with sapphires and Moissanite

We open a parenthesis and we copy from Wikipedia:

“The moissanite is a rare mineral which the crystal lattice is formed from an equal number of silicon and carbon atoms, which corresponds to the formula SiC. The artificial version is called silicon carbide and is used as an abrasive, as a material in power electronics, such as line roller guide in the rings of fishing rods, and as a gemstone in jewelry. In jewelry for trade issues is still uses the term moissanite.”

Although a jeweler will have difficulty to admit it, most people are not able to tell the difference between a moissanite and a diamond, although there are some significant differences between the two materials. The moissanite is actually much rarer than diamonds. The mineral was discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan (and it is so called). But since 1998 there is also a synthetic gem which is called moissanite, which has an acceptable quality, thanks to a process developed by Charles & Colvard.

Read also: Diamonds or cubic zirconia?

La Moissanite in natura: è estremamente rara
Moissanite in nature: it is extremely rare

Pro: moissanite is not the result of irresponsible excavations, nor of bad conditions of the miners in the extraction, as often happens for diamonds. In short, it is a synthetic stone, yes, but sustainable for the environment. In addition, the diamonds are not as rare as the market (and price) does believe. The fake diamond or, rather, the moissanite, last a lot: in the scale of Mohs hardness is classified in 25.9, while a natural gem is 10. Well, diamonds are a bit harder, but not a lot. Another advantage: color and clarity. Clarity is always very good in synthetic diamonds, because production is highly controlled. Nothing inclusions. Furthermore, incredibly, a moissanite is very shining: the refractive index of the artificial gem is of 2.65 to 2.69, greater than that of a real diamond, which arrives around 2,417. The higher score means that the light bounces through the facets of the stone for longer, allowing more glitter.

Anello di oro 18 carati e Moissanite
18-karat gold and moissanite ring

Cons: a fake diamond can get away with it as long as it is small. If the moissanite stone is large, the color can have shades from light green to gray to yellow. Even if, for truth, for years the fancy diamonds are all the rage. Another downside: you want to give a synthetic diamond to save? Hmm, think about it: the moissanite is actually among the most expensive synthetic diamonds, especially if you compare it with cubic zirconia. The high price is dependent on the proprietary process and the hard work it takes to manufacture it. But it is also true that compared to diamonds the moissaniti can be up to 95% cheaper.

A jewel in the shape of a lock? WhyNow

Since 1935 the Songa family, in Milan, has managed the homonymous company founded by Antonio and now managed by Giovanni Maria, Antonio Andrea and Francesco. In addition to an intense activity in the wholesale sector, the group seems to have an unstoppable imagination in the creation of brands designed specifically to reach the different market segments, especially with silver and steel jewelry. The Songa group, for example, produces and markets proprietary brands such as Kidult, Mabina Gioielli, 2Jewels and PlayTogether. A novelty is, however, WhyNow, which wants to reach the younger audience.

Salvini’s Magic for February 14th

What is love, if not magic? Nobody knows how the spark fires, nobody has discovered when passion ignites and nobody can predict the effect of an encounter before it happens. Maybe it’s really Cupid’s magic. But also a jewel can contribute to making a relationship, an appointment or the party dedicated to lovers, Valentine’s Day, magical. Precisely for this reason Salvini, a brand of the Damiani group, proposes the Magia collection for February 14 (but not only).

The collection of the Milanese brand focuses on special diamond cuts. With Magia, in fact, Salvini offers jewels with a strong identity in which the protagonists are shaped stones such as emerald-cut diamonds (formed by three baguette-cut stones), and heart-shaped (formed by teardrop-cut gems). Necklaces, rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings are made of white gold, according to the style of the house. In jewelry a central stone is surrounded by small round cut diamonds, which increase the brightness.

A titanic Valentine’s Day for Gi by Giselle Effting

//

Who wouldn’t want a solid, strong love, capable of withstanding the shocks of life? It seems like a titanic purpose. And, perhaps, it is a goal that can be approached if we do not forget to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Maybe with a titanium jewel, a metal that is among the most resistant and flexible and that is used by many jewelers. Gi by Giselle Effting, for example, in view of February 14, offers titanium jewelry with the addition of small diamonds. Will they also make the relationship stronger?

Among other things, titanium is a rather young material. It was discovered in Cornwall (Great Britain) only a little over two centuries ago by William Gregor. And it is such a strong metal that it was named in memory of the Titans, the most ancient gods of Greek mythology. The two main characteristics of titanium are corrosion resistance and the ratio of strength to density, the highest of any metallic element. A good omen for overcoming relationship problems.

The market for crypto diamonds

Although it is winter, thrill-seekers are not lacking. And there is no shortage of diamond lovers (and it’s not just women). In fact, the most popular precious stones have long been a possible target for investors. But buying diamonds isn’t as simple as shopping for stocks or choosing shares in an investment fund. There are those who buy them at auctions, there are those who turn to trusted jewelry, those who opt for companies specializing in the trade and sale of gems. However, it is a risky investment: the value of diamonds is not easily recognizable by anyone who is not an operator on the small precious metals market.

Now, however, a new option is also looming: crypto diamonds. Or, better, a tool that uses the system adopted for bitcoin, ethereum and all other digital currencies, to buy and sell diamonds. The novelty was presented some time ago in Istanbul and is called Triple Ex Token, an instrument proposed by Cypto Exchange Stockpoint. This system, if all goes well, should work from the second half of 2022. Buying and selling of diamonds will be done through the Triple Ex Marketplace. What should be the benefit? According to the promoters, it is transparency.

Basically, the number of transactions on this digital market will also determine a price linked to the actual demand for the stones: the number and value of purchases will determine the price of diamonds. And this thanks to the use of the Triple Ex Token. In this way, the developers of the crypto market argue, diamonds can be bought like any other investment without, that is, an artificially inflated price from a retailer. Just like it happens among professional operators, in short. Will it work? Is it to be trusted? Questions to which, for now, there is no answer.

Swati Dhanak from the desert to New York

/

From the desert to abstract art: the jewels of the New York designer Swati Dhanak.

From Dubai to New York, but of Indian origin, Swati Dhanak is a jewelry designer who does not retain a modicum of oriental style. On the contrary, she is an innovator. She is able to surprise with collections that have a different form than usual and, if anything, more linked to that of abstract painting. She uses mainly gold and diamonds: materials with which it has been used since childhood.

Anello Duo Four way in oro 18 carati e diamanti baguette e pavé
Anello Duo Four way in oro 18 carati e diamanti baguette e pavé

Her family, in fact, has a tradition in jewelery and as a child she often went to his grandfather’s gold lab in Dubai. In short, she has the gold in her blood, but before giving life to her jewelry brand she worked for Armani and Chanel. She has traveled the world, she has learned, she has chosen to interpret a Western taste in his creations. The jewels testify geometries, but also asymmetries, with a mix between sudden touch and mathematical rigor. One of her first collections, Movement, is however inspired by the sands of the desert that come to life in her memory. In short, Swati Dhanak Jewelery is a special case, a solitary path. And that’s exactly what the designer wanted to achieve.

How to distinguish cubic zirconia from zircon

Do you know the difference between zirconia and cubic zirconia? They are two completely different minerals (even in price). This is what zircons and cubic zirconia are and why it is important to know the characteristics in order not to fall into the trap

Synthetic diamonds or zircons? What if, on the other hand, they are cubic zirconia? Almost always the description of the jewels proposed by the manufacturers indicates which type of stone is used on rings, necklaces or bracelets. But this description is not always true. From your emails, in fact, we discovered that few really know the difference between zircons (a natural stone) and cubic zirconia (a synthetic crystal). The problem is that companies often offer jewelry with “zircons”. But in reality it is not about zircons, but cubic zirconia. And there is a big difference (even in the price): cubic zirconia cost very little. Better to clarify your ideas, then.

Cubic zirconia. It is one of the more popular alternatives for a diamond. For chemistry it is zirconium oxide, and it is often used as a synthetic diamond. If you read the initials Cz in the description of a jewel, it is cubic zirconia. It is a crystal, on the market since 1970. The physical properties are very similar to those of a diamond, so much so that it is difficult to distinguish them with the naked eye. Most cubic zirconia is colorless, but there are also colored ones. One aspect that distinguishes it from a real diamond is its thermal conductivity: like real zircon, cubic zirconia tends to be a thermal insulator compared to diamonds, which are heat conductors.

Zircon (zirconium silicate). It is a natural gem, and closely resembles a diamond. Among the characteristics that make it very similar to a diamond is the refraction capacity, even if the zircon is more opaque. Otherwise, zircon is quite similar to a diamond. It is an often colorless stone but, like real diamonds, it can have colored shades: green, pink, purple, white, yellow and blue, which is the most requested color. Although the colors of the zircon are natural, the stones can also be heat treated to make the gem colorless or, conversely, to increase the hue. The major visual difference of a zircon compared to a diamond is that the reflection of light is different, less brilliant.

Five myths wrong

How many colors does gold have? Are diamonds really indestructible? Are precious stones everytime more expensive than others? Discover the answers and debunked the myths regarding the jewelry ♦

Even in the jewelry there are myths die hard. They are opinions that you can listen by a friend, or suggestions that a grandmother, which you considered wise, handed down as truth, as the result of ancient experience. In short, as in many other aspects of life, even for jewelry the are popular belief, sometimes, hides the reality. Here are five myths that here are unmasked .
The diamond is indestructible
Diamond is one of the toughest elements that exist in nature. For this reason, many people believe that diamonds are indestructible. Not so. It is true that diamonds are at the highest level on the Mohs scale, which measures the hardness. But they are far from proof of damage. So, be careful: you can scratch a diamond, for example if it is brought into contact with another diamond. And in some cases, especially at certain points, such as the edge or belt of a ring, a diamond can scratch or break.

The opal brings bad luck
It is a myth that has formed in the nineteenth century. It comes from a novel by Walter Scott, in which the heroine, Anne of Geierstein, throws his opal in the sea after spending many misadventures. Without the stone his life becomes serene. The Empress Eugenie of France, hit by the novel, fueled this belief that, as with all myths, is magnified through word of mouth. So much so that the opal was forbidden at the court of superstitious Tsar. Rather, opals are unlucky for those who have to work it: they break easily when are cutted.

Diamonds are increasingly rare
Not so. The trend in the price of diamonds is regulated by supply and demand. In short, it also depends on how much money people have in their pockets. Not only: the price of the stones is also affected by how many are placed on the market. The large mining companies are very careful not to sell too many diamonds, a factor that would decrease the price.

Gold has many colors
The jewels are most often offered in three variants of gold: white, pink, yellow, but there are also shades of green or black gold, brown, beige … In fact, in nature there is only one type of gold: yellow . The other gold variants are obtained by mixing gold with other elements, for example copper to obtain the pink variant. It is not just an aesthetic choice: pure 24-karat gold is very soft and deforms easily: this is why the yellow metal is alloyed with other elements, such as silver or palladium.

Semi precious stones are worth little
It’s not for sure. There are only four precious stones: diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. But there are also semi-precious stones that are very rare and very beautiful, like alexandrite, demantoid garnet, tanzanite and aquamarine. A semi-precious stone of great quality can have a value greater than a gemstone.
