The nuances of the new Geocube

In addition to being the name of a device designed to monitor areas at risk of landslides, since 1999 the Geocube has also been the name of the most famous collection of the German company Coeur de Lion. The shape of these jewels is unmistakable: as the name indicates, bracelets, necklaces and earrings are made up of small cubes. Even if the materials with which Geocube jewels are made are not precious, the pieces of the line are handmade. It produces about 3,000 bijoux a year: large, colorful, whimsical and sold all over the world. It is the activity of Thot Gioielli, a company from Chiuduno, a town near Bergamo (Italy). In a dozen years the founder, Susanna Lissignoli, has brought the brand to a solid position in the designer costume jewelery market. The designer bought old brass filigrees in Paris and brought them to Tuscany, near Arezzo, for a process that was then completed in Milan, where the setting with glass beads, rhinestones, resins or brass spheres took place. Not only that: she also uses vintage bijoux that are reworked and become almost unique pieces, often of large dimensions.

The autobiography describes the entrepreneur as the daughter of a collector of antique jewels, who from an early age cultivated an attraction for stones and metals, a passion for travel, art and fashion studies. Another passion is for history, which also inspires the creation of bijoux. And the brand name? It is inspired by Thot, an Egyptian divinity who transforms lead into gold and is depicted with a round headdress that metaphorically represents the ring, the precious object, but at the same time the circularity of the ring represents faith. Thot, according to the designer, metaphorically wants to unite several religions, the East with the West.

According to the official definition, a desire is an intense feeling that pushes one to seek the possession, achievement or implementation of what can satisfy one’s physical or spiritual need. I wonder if the desire to own a jewel can be included in this description. The fact is that everyone in the world has desires, more or less explicit, more or less confessable. Among the latter, however, there is also the legitimate desire to own and wear jewels, perhaps on those important occasions, such as parties, celebrations or anniversaries, in which the sensation of feeling elegant is pleasant.

Perhaps with these considerations in mind, the Italian brand Brosway has thought of a line called Desideri (wishes). They are bijoux with a very affordable price and, therefore, I know a type of desire that is easily attainable. Wisdom for S’Agapò

Wisdom: is, as defined by Wikipedia, a word denoting the ability to contemplate and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense, and intuition. Wisdom is associated with attributes such as impartial judgment, compassion, experiential self-knowledge, self-transcendence and non-attachment. Not reported by the great online encyclopedia (perhaps it’s too early), however, the collection of the Italian brand of costume jewelery S’Agapò.

The brand that belongs to the Bros Manifatture group has chosen this name, Wisdom, for a series of necklaces, bracelets and earrings made of steel and freshwater pearls. These are simple bijoux, in some versions with the use of gilded metal, in tune with the Christmas atmosphere of winter. Even the pendants in the shape of a five-pointed star help to characterize the bijoux in an environment suitable for the end-of-year festivities.

The first thing you learn in school are the letters of the alphabet. With a step back in time, the Milanese designer Bona Calvi has rethought those early confidences with the written word to develop Le Minuscole, a capsule collection that traces the emotion (and efforts) of translating sounds into signs written on paper. The result is the 21 letters of the Italian alphabet in lowercase printed format, formed only by straight lines and circles, just like the first words learned in class.

As it is easy to guess, the letters can be worn individually, or form acronyms, initials, words, phrases. As in school, the limit is only the writer’s imagination. Thin colored cords (blue, red and green) are used to connect the letters, but nothing prevents you from using another type of support. The expression Affinity, which is now used by Brosway for a collection of bijoux, also refers to the title of a work by J. W. Goethe, Elective affinities. In the book the feelings are compared to those that occur in chemistry between two associated elements, which split and associate forming, by law of mutual attraction, new couples. The Affinity collection probably does not aim to induce reflection on the issue of compatibility between two people.

More simply, the line of bijoux of the Bros Manifatture group brand aims to offer necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets that can make the appearance pleasant and, therefore, encourage the development of affinity. Printing jewels in 3D, obviously with a special device capable of building three-dimensional objects, has been the dream of many designers for some years. This is why some have taken this path, such as Valeria D’Annibale, who has always been fascinated by new technologies, but also by jewelry. The result is called Varily, a brand that offers bijoux made of nylon. A material that is not precious, of course, but which offers creativity as an added value. So much so that the designer chose this material after starting to work silver, enthused by the ductility offered by the resistance and flexibility.

Before launching on the market with her own brand, Valeria D ‘Annibale studied Jewelery and Object Design in Sydney, Australia, where she met and married her husband. Then, the couple moved to Holland where, together with two twins, Varily’s business was also born, in an environment conducive to Nordic minimalist design. And to 3D printing.

Big and eye-catching, yet very light: these are the jewels by Francesca Trubbianelli, made with the raku ceramic technique. This is a centuries-old Japanese tradition used to make the bowls of the tea ceremony, which the Umbrian artist has adapted on her jewels working by subtraction on a heavy material like clay (if you want to know more about this technique click here) . All the pieces are made entirely by hand and are inspired by the depths of the earth, the fire that burns inside, melts everything and unites, and then water that cools and fixes.
