Sara Loren in space

////

You can take a journey into space without running dangers with the Cosmos collection by Sara Loren, which is proposed as an alternative to the classic interpretations of necklace, ring, bracelet and earring. The diversity is all in the design chosen by the Venetian brand to symbolize planets and satellites. The jewelry is made of 18K gold plated silver. But the characteristic are the soft colors, which are attributed to the jewels through an electro-immersion treatment, which creates shades of electric tones. In particular, shades of dark red and pink, or blue, light blue, green and yellow were chosen.

Needle, thread and Keep Out

//

The sewing thimble turns into a silver pendant with Keep Out ♦ ︎
Who sews by hand, with needle and thread, knows that it is easy to sting a finger. For this reason women have been using a small but useful object for centuries: the thimble. That is a metal cover for the tip of the finger that pushes the needle into the fabric. This simple but effective object is at the base of the idea of Keep Out, brand of Casale Monferrato (Piedmont, Italy), which has decided to use the shape of the thimble as a pendant for its silver jewels. Among other things, in South America the thimble was also an object that once grandmothers gave to their nephews who were get to married, as a object symbol that protects from the bites of life.

Stefania Gagliardone, a professional dealer in the precious stones industry, and founder of Hang Loose, the company that gave life to Keep Out, liked the story. In short, the silver thimble has become a kind of silver charm: bracelets, necklaces , earrings and rings, are handmade in Valenza, the city of high Italian jewelry. Prices: from the bracelet 160 euros to a few tens of euros for the simplest models.

A scientific research: you have to clean the jewels to kill microbes and viruses

//

Jewelry can hide dangerous microbes or viruses. Another good reason why jewelry needs cleaning. This was confirmed by a scientific research by the National Institutes of Health ♦ ︎

Periodic cleaning of the jewelry is necessary. And not only because the jewels get dirty, they are covered with a patina that hides the reflections of metal and stones, and makes it less beautiful. Another good reason to clean jewels is also because enemies can nest inside them: microbes, bacteria, viruses (unfortunately a topical topic) and even harmful substances that can creep into the frames or between the cracks in the metal. This, of course, is especially true for rings, in particular for large and composite ones with many elements or with small empty spaces, as happens in engraved metal: hands can come into contact with objects that hide these bio dangers.

Pulizia di un anello
Pulizia di un anello

In jewelry these harmful elements can hide for a long time, also because many women often take off their rings before washing their hands and, therefore, do not eliminate the bacteria that have infiltrated the jewelry. Moreover, sometimes the jewels are delicate, for example, they are composed with pearls or stones such as opal, which is easily damaged. This is why it is easy to fall into the temptation to never clean the jewels.

The hidden enemies. But it’s not just the rings that potentially become biological bombs. Even a necklace or bracelet can be in contact with bacteria or unhealthy materials, which find refuge in some small space of the jewel. Don’t believe it? Instead it is: some time ago in the United States an experiment was conducted that proves the dangers that can be hidden in rings that are not cleaned frequently. The goal of the research, conducted by the National Institutes of Health, was to verify whether anesthesiologists and surgeons could infect patients in the operating room with their wedding rings. Ten surgeons and ten anesthetists participated in the screening. The rings were removed at the end of the day, and their inner circumference was swabbed, then placed in a culture medium. Result: Staphylococci were cultured in all. A surgeon developed coagulase-negative staphylococci from annular swab. But the bacteria were eliminated after a thorough cleaning of the hands and ring.

Metals nicked. In addition to becoming dangerous to health, if not cleaned, jewels can be damaged in the long run: sweat, skin acid, cosmetics and dust end up attacking metals and stones or, at least, ruining the shiny patina that covers them. Softer stones, such as opals, can also be severely damaged. So, don’t forget to wash your jewelry at least every now and then.

Gerardo Sacco, from Magna Grecia to the big screen

//

Magna Graecia (Greater Greece) is the geographical area of the Italian peninsula, South and Sicily, which was formerly colonized by the Greeks starting from the eighth century BC. What has remained since then? Temples, ancient ruins. But also a certain cultural heritage of which Gerardo Sacco could be part. He is a jeweler from Crotone, specializing in silver processing, but not only. In part, his work seems to collect the ancient legacy of Magna Graecia in the territory that in those centuries was called Enotria.

Anello con maschera, in oro 18 carati e diamante

After the apprenticeship in a goldsmith workshop in Calabria, Gerardo Sacco went as far as Valenza (a thousand kilometers north) to improve and perfect the gold working technique. And in 1963 he started the production of his jewels, with a style that collects the Mediterranean tradition, but also the most ancient one. In addition to the masks of the Greek tragedy, reproduced on some rings, the metalwork with embroidery is connected to the Baroque tradition of Southern Italy.

One aspect of his activity, however, is directly connected with current times: his jewels have been used in various film, theater and television productions. They have been worn by Liz Taylor to Isabella Rossellini, from Monica Bellucci to Elena Sofia Ricci, and they have also been used for period films and operas. A bridge between Magna Graecia and the world of entertainment.

The simple and ingenious design of Japan inspired by a sculptor’s soul. Natsuko Toyofuku, known as Natsu, is a jewelry designer who lives and works in Milan, with a showroom workshop in one of the nightlife streets, Corso Como. Born in Japan, she has lived in Italy since she was a child. The spring of Bettina T’s design

//

There is a type of jewelry that does not look to the past, but futuristically to the society of the present. This is the story of Bettina T, a brand created by the designer Cinzia Caviglia. The fact that the designer’s ideas were born in Rome, one of the cities with the most history behind it, makes Cinzia Caviglia’s choice to use shapes inspired by common objects, such as the springs used to hang the laundry to dry, even more unusual. Springs are not the only element that is extrapolated from its context to become a jewel. In fact, the Industrial collection also includes other jewels that find their origin, as far as design is concerned, in another area. The jewels are made of silver or gold, in some cases with the addition of small diamonds.

Orecchini in oro bianco con diamanti

Perhaps this vocation for aesthetic contamination derives from the training of Cinzia Caviglia, who started as a graphic designer, who adds in her bio the inclination to blend apparently distinct subjects, from design to photography, from glass craftsmanship to illustration and to 3D creations. The transmigration into the world of jewelry is due, however, to her work with her mother Bettina in the family jewelry, which she then continued, with the addition of new ideas.

Giovanni Raspini’s anemones

//

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the Greek word ἀνεμώνη (anemōnē) means “daughter of the wind”. And in the book Ovid’s Metamorphoses it is said that the plant was created by the goddess Aphrodite when she sprinkled nectar on the blood of her deceased lover Adonis. Furthermore, Anemone can also refer to Nea’man, the Phoenician name of Adonis, and also to the ancient Syrian myth of the god of vegetation, depicted with the tusks of a boar. In short, the anemone transformed by Giovanni Raspini into a collection of silver jewelry is inspired by this flowering plant, which is part of the Ranunculaceae family native to the temperate and subtropical regions of all continents except Australia and New Zealand.

It is a name that comes from a photograph found in the Bettinardi family album: an image of grandparents on their honeymoon in the capital of Italy, two years after the end of the Second World War. A photograph that recalls the times of the Dolce Vita, but also of the desire to leave after the war interlude. And which, over half a century later, in turn pushed Better Silver to successfully target the retail market.

The heart of Tuum

Prayer can touch the heart. And Tuum, a brand that had the idea of imprinting phrases and verses of the Catholic religion on its jewels, now proposes Cor, a collection consisting of a series of pendants to be added to a cord or chain. The shape of the medallions is, in fact, that of the heart enclosed in a circle. “Since ancient times, the wedding ring has been worn on the left hand due to the belief that a small artery would pass through them, going up to the heart”, is the phrase that accompanies the collection.

Tuum’s pendants are made of silver, with the prayer of the Pater Noster in Latin embossed. Several pink, yellow or white rhodium-plated versions are proposed. A gold version is also available, in 9 or 18 carats and with small diamonds.

The snakes by Giovanni Raspini

////

The snake, in addition to being a reptile, is also one of the darlings of jewelers. Bracelets, rings and necklaces in the shape of the sinuous animal have been adopted by large and small brands. Giovanni Raspini also proposes for the next season Serpenti (snakes), a silver collection inspired by the limbless animal, which over the centuries has been taken as a symbol of a dark side, or of a sensual temptation, as evidenced by the story of the Bible. But all this takes a back seat in the snake-inspired jewelry collections, which use the scales and the elongated shape of the reptile for the different types of ornaments.

In addition, in the Serpenti collection by Giovanni Raspini, details are added such as the small invisible joints of the necklace, which allow the jewel to adapt better to the shape of the body and therefore offer better wearability. Each piece is offered in two versions, a more figurative one, where the snake’s shapes are more evident, and a more minimal one, where the reptile skin is the protagonist.
