Neha Dani, rhodium, titanium and fireworks

The precious jewels with flowers and leaves of the Indian designer Neha Dani. Also with Titanium Collection ♦

From her office in New Delhi to the boutiques of Europe and the US: Neha Dani is a designer (but perhaps it would be better to call an artist of jewelry), which has succeeded in becoming an international signature. Take a look at the jewels on this page and you’ll understand why. Someone wrinkles the nose to the use of rhodium to give particular nuances to the metal, but in reality this is just a detail of what is the creative process of Neha Dani.

Anello Amishi ispirato alle fronde delle palme. I dettagli sono incisi nella cera dall'artista, aggiungendo e scolpendo il materiale fino a ottenere la forma finale perfetta dell'anello
Amishi ring inspired by palm fronds. Details are etched into the wax by the artist, adding and sculpting material until the perfect final shape of the ring is achieved

The jewels created are unique pieces which exalt the precious stones used around the 18-carat gold structure. Although the shapes may appear abstract, the themes of the natural world and human emotions are present in each piece: dried leaves and petals of flowers are among those that occur most often in the creations of Indian designers. The contours of necklaces or rings are flexed, as if they were bent by the wind: a choice that gives lightness to even the most elaborate jewels. Dani is a member of Gemological of England and has a diploma from the Gemological Institute of America. The price of her jewelry starts at about $ 18,000.

All about titanium jewelery

Do you want to buy a titanium jewel? First, you must read this guide to find out the benefits, price and features of titanium jewelry ♦ ︎

From some years it is increasingly used in high jewelry: titanium is a metal that has so many unique features. But what are the differences with gold and platinum? Is it worth buying a jewel made of titanium? How to Clean and Preserve a Titanium Jewel?

Orecchini in titanio e diamanti
Earrings in titanium and diamonds by Margherita Burgener

Features. Titanium is a lightweight metal with excellent resistance, three times more than steel, but is much lighter. It is silver-like shiny white when it is pure. Another interesting feature is that it does not cause irritation, allergies or discoloration of the skin: if you suffer from irritation when wearing jewelery, titanium can be the right solution. It is no coincidence that it is also well used for piercings. Titanium is used in jewelery because it does not break or bend (unless it is very thin). Another positive aspect: it do not spoils with sea water or chlorine of the pool, as well as water directed.

Orecchini Rosa, in titanio, diamanti, madreperla bianca grigia
Vhernier, Rosa earrings, in titanium, diamonds, gray white mother-of-pearl

In jewelery. Titanium is used in jewelery, but its resistance makes it difficult to process. That’s why titanium jewelry is fairly rare: not all jewelers can blend it (it takes 1723 degrees Celsius, ie 3,135 degrees Fahrenheit, to blend this metal). Only in the late 1990s technology enabled the use of titanium in jewelry, initially, for simple rings and then for more complex pieces.
Titanium is also used to make gold more resistant: in some cases it is enough to add 1% to yellow metal to eliminate the softness of pure gold.
Titanium and colors. Another feature of titanium used in jewelery is that it can be colored. It can, in fact, be anodized to vary the thickness of the surface oxide layer, with a variety of vibrant colors. This process occurs through heating or electric shock: the metal releases its oxides and modifies its color according to the temperature and duration of the process. You can find anodized yellow, pink, red, purple, blue or black titanium.

Braccialetto Vita Savers. Oro bianco, titanio, con 560 diamanti
Life Savers bracelet. White gold, titanium, with 560 diamonds

Curiosity. Titanium was discovered in Cornwall in Great Britain by William Gregor in 1791, but the name was decided by Martin Heinrich Klaproth and refers to the titans of Greek mythology.
For who is recommended. Titanium jewelery can be a good solution for those who want to wear them even when they are caught with some manual activity, from kitchen to childcare, or to DIY. In addition, it is very unlikely that it causes allergies: another point in its favor.

Sabba, orecchini in titanio e diamanti
Sabba, titanium and diamond earrings

The cost. Titanium is not an expensive metal: it is easily found in nature and even though it has a fairly complex workmanship, it does not have a high price. The cost of a jewel in titanium will then be determined by the type of shape, more or less complex, and hence the number of hours it takes to work. Obviously, another fundamental aspect is the value of stones that can be used in jewelery.

How to Clean Titanium. It is simply cleaned with water and, if necessary, a diluted drop of neutral liquid soap. Use a soft toothbrush. Titanium is a tough metal, but cleaning can ruin other materials with which jewel is made, like stones.

Gold and titanium for Gi by Giselle

Gold and titanium: 2023 marks an innovation for the young Florentine brand Gi by Giselle. The designer and founder, Giselle Effting, points out that it is an artisan technique and is developed exclusively by Gi by Giselle. In fact, working with titanium is difficult: it is a light, flexible metal, but also incredibly tough. To achieve the result, Gi di Giselle fuses gold and titanium through an inlay method. The veins are 3D etched into the titanium print, the gold is then applied in a chase technique and the veins are hand hammered to secure the gold in place.

Anello in titanio e oro di Gi by Giselle

Titanium was already used by the brand in the past, but combined with small diamonds or sapphires. In addition to the manufacturing technique, Gi by Giselle’s jewels are also original in terms of design, which favors asymmetry and a flavor of artisanal production.
Born in southern Brazil, Giselle Effting discovered her passion by collecting shells with her mother and her sister on the beaches of Santa Catarina to make necklaces and bracelets. Since the age of 15, however, she has had a parenthesis as a model in 9 different countries. The approach to the fashion world has allowed her to get to know the works of creative directors, fashion designers and high jewelery brands. After settling in Hong Kong she discovered her passion for jewelry and she graduated from the Gemological Institute of America, before moving to Florence, where she attended courses at the Alchimia Contemporary Jewelry School.

Curves and titanium for Giselle Effting

From shells to titanium. The distance between the two materials is long, like the one that separates Italy from Brazil. There, on the beaches of Santa Catarina, a state located in the south of the great South American country, the young Giselle Effting made bracelets with shells collected from the sea. At the age of 15, however, she walked the red carpet as a model and she says she lived in nine different countries and for a long time in Hong Kong. The fashion environment, creativity and jewels have merged into a single form of life, which has resulted in the graduation at the Gemological Institute of America. An experience that allowed Giselle to work as a high-end jewelry designer in Hong Kong. Then, she moved to Florence, where she earned her diploma in Fine Arts at the Alchimia School of Contemporary Jewelery.

And here we are today, with her brand, Giselle Effting, which has all the characteristics to stand out from other products. First of all, the designer has chosen to use titanium, for its lightness and uniqueness, as well as for being a hypoallergenic metal. But what is immediately evident is the originality of the jewels, which become accessories for the body and, in the choice of a style linked to the most glamorous trends. The jewels often have an unconventional, surprising shape and, explains the designer, also serve to emphasize unexplored curves of the body.

Titanium jewelry: should you buy them?

Titanium jewelry: they are the last frontier of jewelry. Beautiful, but also difficult to make. Should you buy them? ♦

Long live titanium, which has become synonymous with creative audacity and high technology in jewelry from a key element in the aerospace industry. To what does it owe its success? To lightness, first of all: with a weight less than a fifth compared to gold, it allows large volumes and the same comfort in wearing, especially for earrings and bracelets. Not only that: those who associate titanium only with its sad gray color of origin are wrong: this metal can be dyed in bright and full shades, from lawn green to lacquer red, to intense purple, to electric blue. Furthermore, whatever the color obtained through an oxidation process, unlike what is done with the galvanic process on silver or other metals, it is much more resistant: it does not fade with time and does not risk detachment. But this is not the only technical advantage: its extreme resistance allows you to use less metal than gold and platinum for the frames and to create very thick pavé.

Masterpiece 2019: due spille con diamanti e zaffiri blu su titanio
Cindy Chao, Masterpiece 2019: due spille con diamanti e zaffiri blu su titanio

How to use it. Titanium is often used for thin and light metal architectures that serve as gem racks. It is no coincidence that most titanium jewels are literally covered with stones. One of the first to experiment with this material in jewelry was Jar (Joseph Arthur Rosenthal) in the late 1980s, and on the occasion of his retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, he created a collection of titanium and aluminum jewelery for sale inside the museum at affordable prices, from 2 to 5 thousand dollars. The fact that it is less expensive than gold must not be misleading, its processing requires great skill and technical knowledge, so it may happen that some jewels are even more expensive than their cousins made with more noble metals.

The admirers. Titanium jewels, therefore, are usually embellished with super precious stones, such as those of Wallace Chan, the jeweler from Hong Kong, or the Swiss Suzanne Syz, who made titanium his signature. And yet the sinuous tracery of Pomellato, which chose it to renew the Arabesque collection, or the delicate leaves of the Chopard bracelet with blue sapphires, the magnetic colors of the flower-shaped brooch by Giovanni Ferraris or the slight setting of the brooch by Michelle Ong, one of the few people who can boast a friendship with Jar. But there are also those who focus everything on design rather than precious stones, such as the Italian Maison Vhernier.

Orecchini in titanio verde e diamanti di Jacob & Co

Is it worth buying titanium jewelry? Titanium, like metal, costs less than gold, but is more difficult to use in jewelry. That said, the value of a titanium jewel is not determined by the cost of the raw material. If the gold of a jewel can be melted and resold, the same cannot be proposed for titanium. Therefore, when you buy a titanium jewel, you choose the design, the signature of the Maison, the gems that make up the piece. It is not said that a titanium jewel is more advantageous than a gold or platinum jewel: it depends on the stones that compose it.

How do you clean titanium? In addition to being light, titanium is very resistant: no problem for cleaning that can be performed with the usual mix of warm water, two drops of liquid soap and a toothbrush with soft bristles. If anything, the problem may be the structure of the jewel. Titanium, as we have explained, is often used to make jewels with a particularly imaginative shape, often together with many precious stones. You must be very careful, therefore, not to ruin the structure of the jewel with an excessively energetic cleaning. Monica Battistoni

The extraordinary stones byBomare, brand founded in Geneva by Marc Boghossian ♦ ︎
Before Boghossian was Boghossian, that is a high-end jewelry brand admired all over the world, there was Bomare. This is the name of the Geneva-based company specializing in high-end colored diamonds, precious stones and unique jewelry creations. Marc Boghossian, Swiss of Armenian-Middle Eastern origin, founded Bomare in 1997. The company, which was present in GemGenève, offers natural pink, blue and yellow diamonds, large white diamonds, rubies and Burmese sapphires, Colombian emeralds and natural pearls. Things for refined investors and collectors. On the other hand, the Boghossian family has been in the diamond and jewelery industry for more than six generations.

A tradition that is rooted in time, in short, and that has helped to build the fame of Bomare. The Maison emphasizes that it has chosen to buy rough diamonds in conflict-free countries, in South Africa, in full compliance with the Kimberley process. The gems are then polished in New York and in Antwerp and are all certified with the Gia and Ssef laboratories. In GemGenève Bomare featured a titanium butterfly pendant, paved with diamonds and sapphires, but above all with a large pink diamond in the center, next to a necklace made of pear cut diamonds with 7.5 carat yellow diamonds. Pieces that do not go unnoticed.

The fine Greek titanium of Anastasia Kessaris

//

She has a degree in architecture, she worked as an architect in London, eventually becoming a senior interior designer at Harrods. So what could Anastasia Kessaris‘s next step be? Designing jewelry. And it is not strange, because the architect Anastasia is also the daughter of the most famous jeweler in Athens, Costas Kessaris. Anastasia, who married Belgian businessman Thomas Persy three years ago (with a party for 1,358 guests, including Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis), has nevertheless chosen her path. Her jewels, in fact, are in pure minimal-pop style, with great use of titanium.

Above all, earrings and necklaces follow soft designs, with clean shapes, without being anonymous. The titanium surfaces host small diamonds or precious stones such as tourmalines or tsavorites. But, of course, one of the advantages that titanium offers is the possibility of coloring the metal directly, without having to cover it with enamel. Anastasia Kessaris’s jewels thus present themselves with bold shades, such as violet or intense blue, which with the wavy surfaces of the jewels take on unpredictable shades. Now they are also available on Moda Operandi.

Sarah Ho’s surprising plots

The innovations offered by technology also serve to change the creative path. As in the case of the new collection of the London designer Sarah Ho. In recent months, she says, she has also learned to draw with the iPad. Not only that: she shared her sketches of her with her on Instagram, soliciting feedback and advice. The result is called Bright Young Things, a new collection where Sarah Ho shows off all her virtuosity for jewelry.

The collection uses a wide range of colored gems, but a world of its own is built around each one, with the help of gold and enamel. According to those who know her well, the textures that characterize some pieces are a legacy of Sara Ho’s experience in the world of fashion, in her previous professional life. Another innovation is the use of a new metal alloy that combines titanium and aluminum, light but resistant materials. The metal has also been oxidized to achieve new shades. They are particularly elaborate and rich pieces also for the material used. Prices, on average, range between 11,000 and 15,000 pounds.

Jacob & Co, luxury that sways

Luster earrings by Jacob & co: a cascade of diamonds that sway ♦

Fanciful, a bit strange for jewelers with long pedigrees, loved by rap artists: Jacob Arabo and his Jacob & co constitute a unique case in the world of luxury. And after years he is still able to amaze, as for creations like the Luster earrings, which sparkle with 200 baguette-cut diamonds hanging individually (from 23.53 to 26.89 carats in total), on white gold and with over 400 white diamonds for the pavé. Furthermore, the earrings are light and sway with every movement of the wearer, with a captivating effect.

Orecchini Lustre, con 200 diamanti taglio baguette

The jeweler’s success, in fact, is due precisely to these unusual creations. And the designer’s story is also unique. After graduating in jewelry design in 1981, in New York, Arabic opened a small shop in the city’s Diamond District, where he began designing for private clients and jewelers. In 1986, Arabo opened his company, called Diamond Quasar, and began designing with his label, called Jacob & Co. The jewels, very lively, initially attracted the attention of singer Faith Evans, who later her husband, the rapper BIG, was brought to the boutique. Word of mouth has begun in New York’s musical environment and Jacob’s jewels have become popular. Thanks to its unique products and its famous clientele, the brand has thus gained popularity, even expanding into luxury watchmaking since 2002. But without forgetting the jewels. Syz Fireworks, the fantasy doubles

The jewels of the new Syz Fireworks brand, founded by Suzanne and Isabelle Syz. With the debut in GemGèneve ♦ ︎

Some say that a daughter-in-law and mother-in-law never agree. Not true, at least in jewelry. Do you want the proof? That of Suzanne and Isabelle Syz, founders of Syz Fireworks. The new brand debuted at GemGèneve and with a trunkshow on Moda Operandi. The jewels of Syz Fireworks join those already acclaimed by Suzanne Syz, who has invented a cheerful, transgressive style, also innovative from a technical point of view, since she has staked everything on the use of titanium and unconventional shapes.

The jewels of the original Maison, however, are in a price range that not everyone can reach. Syz Fireworks promises the same creative verve, but with a more affordable cost, on average from 2,500 to 8,000 euros. The jewels are always in titanium, with small diamonds set. Life is too short to wear boring jewelry, say the two Syz. And certainly the jewels of the newborn brand will not bore anyone either.

Giovanni Ferraris extends Titanium

/

New rings from the Titanium collection presented by Giovanni Ferraris at Baselworld ♦ ︎

Titanium is a light metal but very durable. And judging by the Titanium collection by Giovanni Ferraris, it is also able to stimulate the imagination of designers, despite the difficulty of processing this material for jewelry. The Titanium collection of the Maison of Valenza is going to be ten years old, yet every year this metal flourishes in the Giovanni Ferraris workshops to reborn with different colors and shapes. At Baselworld 2019, for example, a leaf-shaped ring was added to the Titanium garden, available in blue or green sapphires. A perfect complement to the butterfly-shaped jewels presented a few months earlier.

Titanium is a metal that also has some precious characteristics for jewelry: a specific weight lower than that of other materials and hypoallergenic properties. Moreover, it also has the ability to take on different colors during the processing phases. In the case of the ring, for example, the metal is blue with the version with sapphires of the same hue, while the other is olive green, just like the butterflies of the same collection.

The journey of Suzanne Syz

//

The new jewels of the artist-designer Suzanne Syz: fantasy, irony and a bit of nostalgia ♦ ︎

A journey through time with the art of a Swiss designer who is truly different from the others. Although his specialty is to propose new techniques and surprising shapes, his journey through time is turned backwards, to the fifties, sixties, eighties. In short, new forms to wink at the recent past, with a little ‘nostalgia.

As in the All Tired Up rings, which have the shape of tires. Almost a provocation if you think that they are the result of a refined jewelry technique.

Anelli All Tired Up, titanio e diamanti
Anelli All Tired Up, titanio e diamanti

The rings are made of titanium (but they are also available in gold or golden titanium), a difficult metal to work, which is favored material by Suzanne Syz. The traces of snow between the cracks in the tire are small diamonds. The Arctic Ice ring, in silver and enamel, instead uses ceramic to remember the ice of the North Pole, with a paraiba tourmaline that looks like a small iceberg. Another feature of the designer is the good dose of irony that she uses for her jewelry. An example is the large pair of earrings with the tap-shaped clip: there are not missed hot and cold writing. Also in this case, the idea of the drops of water that come down are paraiba tourmalines, next to small diamonds. Giulia Netrese

DiaColor and the colors of titanium

A titanium collection with many shades comes from India: it’s by DiaColor ♦

Those who still think of India as the country where you move on the back of an elephant must change your mind. India is not only a global economic power, but is also rapidly changing its culture and, therefore, its aesthetic standards. This collection it’s the evidence: it’s called The Many Shades of Titanium. It’s proposed by a New Delhi Maison, DiaColor.

Bracciale in titanio e diamanti
Bracciale in titanio e diamanti

To establish DiaColor was a third-generation jeweler, Rishabh Tongya.

Although most of DiaColor’s production is rather traditional, with large floral motifs, such finely chiselled gold, and with many colored stones, The Many Shades of Titanium collection is innovative in the Indian jewelry scene. Meanwhile, it does not use as a base the metal adored by the Indians, gold. Perhaps also because the Indian government’s policy has long discouraged the importation of the yellow metal. But in any case, using titanium is not easy for anyone. And the DiaColor collection presents bracelets, earrings, rings made by hand, with many colors (it is a characteristic of titanium to be colored) and with diamonds of first choice.
In shades of pink, deep blue, deep gold and aquamarine, the collection stands out in the jewelry scene of the great Asian country, but it can also be interesting for the western market. It is worth taking a look. Alessia Mongrando

Suzanne Syz at Art Basel

Suzanne Syz brings the jewelry to Art Basel with an amazing project ♦ ︎
That designing jewelry is an art nobody doubts it. But there are those who do more, like the Swiss designer Suzanne Syz, who with the project Magnifying, by Sylvie Fleury, invites contemporary artists to re-imagine the jewelery box as a sculpture. So much so that the idea is part of the Art Basel scheduled in the Swiss city (11-17 June 2018). Sylvie Fleury not only designed a jewelry box, but also created an engaging environment that interacts with the work to create a happening, incorporating the visitor into the work and bringing the project to a new dimension.
According to the artist’s intentions, visitors become jewels themselves by interacting with the installation, sitting on an inflatable brooch-shaped display or looking at themselves in the mirror of a giant clock, while nearby a huge earring turns into sculpture. Suzanne Syz, for its part, also proposes jewels that allude to the period of Pop Art, makes use of enamel to create hyper realistic earrings, bends the titanium into small sculptures with diamonds, very appreciated by those who love design. And the art, of course. Giulia Netrese
