The conversations with the moon of Karma El Khalil

//

She is a designer with a degree in psychology, of Lebanese origins, but with life and work in New York: Karma El Khalil is one of the most imaginative representatives of the new jewelry. Her new collection is called Conversations with the moon and for the designer she represents the positive turning point after the long pandemic season. It is also a collection with an immediately recognizable temperament, which uses large semi-precious stones, in particular morganite, opal, topaz and apatite. Gems are best used, with surprising effects, often with clusters on chandelier earrings.

The gems are set in 18K gold, along with small diamonds set in the metal. In some cases the stones have been left in their original, rough state, but most of the time they follow traditional cuts. The idea is that the stones can recall the reflections of the moon on the large skyscrapers of the city but, of course, those who wear a jewel of this type are likely to soon forget the combination. Prices range from $ 1,200 to $ 21,000.

Working for 40 years in the world of finance, between mergers and acquisitions, can be exciting. But in the end she gets tired. After, however, having studied the market, Cad design and gained experience from Tiffany and Cartier. The result is Erin Flynn Fine Jewelry. Rings, earrings and necklaces have simple, minimal shapes, but with a design that adds a defined style to the jewelry. Champagne Bubbles, for example, reproduces the visual effect of bubbles in sparkling wine glasses. The Megawatt line, on the other hand, focuses on alternating between different stone cuts and Defining Lines chooses the path of geometry, with the addition of brooches also for men.

A white gold ring?

/

White gold is the metal you like best, especially those who get married. But do you really know everything about white gold? Maybe you think of buying a ring? This metal, in fact, has strengths, but also some flaws: better to know everything first. In this article, we explain the characteristics and weaknesses of white gold.

Il classico anello in oro bianco e tre diamanti di Tiffany & co.
Il classico anello in oro bianco e tre diamanti di Tiffany & co.

According to the American marketing company GemFind, in fact, the most searched metal on the web in 2019 was 14 carat white gold, with 41% of clicks, followed by 18 carat white gold with 11%. In short, over half of the research concerns precisely white gold: a sign that it is the preferred metal, certainly in the USA and in Europe.

Anello in oro bianco
Bluespirit, anello in oro bianco

Why gold turns white
Gold in nature is yellow. White gold, in fact, is obtained by mixing the original yellow metal with other elements to lighten the color. The most common alloy for making gold white includes nickel, palladium, platinum and manganese. But sometimes copper, zinc or silver are also used, but these metals have contraindications because they can oxidize on contact with air and skin. Alternatively, a thin platinum plating (which is naturally white) in alloy with iridium, ruthenium or cobalt can be used, which add strength to this alloy.

Anello ondulato in oro bianco e diamanti
Orsini, anello ondulato in oro bianco e diamanti

How much yellow gold is there in white gold?
It depends on the carats, a measure that serves to indicate the proportion between the yellow gold contained and the other metals. 18-karat white gold is composed of 75% original metal and 25% other metals. 14-karat gold has only 58.3% of natural gold and for 9-karat white gold the proportion is reduced to 37.5%.

Anello in oro bianco e diamante taglio marquise

The right color for white
Many buy a white gold ring because it has a very simple color and is shiny on one finger, perhaps because there is also a beautiful diamond in addition to metal. But white gold isn’t actually polished. Indeed, it is opaque. The glossy white, in fact, is obtained with the rhodium-plated metal plating, a patina is applied to all the white gold jewels. Without rhodium plating, white gold may appear gray, tending to beige or pale pink.

Anello in oro bianco di Damiani

Nickel allergies
Warning: white gold, especially in the past, has often been obtained with the massive use of nickel, which corrects the yellowish white tinge. But nickel is also a metal that can cause allergies: about one in eight women suffers from it. Those who suffer from nickel allergies must make sure that the white gold that contains nickel has been rhodium: the external patina, in fact, avoids the contact of nickel with the skin.

Plating
As we have mentioned, white gold jewelry usually has a platinum or rhodium plating. Plating makes the jewelry sparkly, but it also has two weaknesses. The first is that plating prevents a ring from being easily tightened or enlarged. Because, of course, rhodium plating must be done again. The second problem is that this patina fades over time and must be applied again. Rhodium plating can also be lost due to sweat from the skin or frequent contact with detergents, other metals or commonly used items. Therefore, if you wear the ring often, the rhodium plating should be done every two years or so. If you do not do the rhodium plating again, the ring will begin to have a yellow and opaque hue. But don’t be afraid, it’s an operation that lasts a couple of hours and is not too expensive.

Yin and Yang for Picchiotti’s Perfect Harmony

//

Even in Picchiotti’s jewels, as in life, it’s all a question of balance. A concept well represented in Chinese cosmology by the juxtaposition of Yin and Yang. According to this, the universe was created from a primary chaos of energy, organized in the cycles of Yin and Yang, principles that are then reflected in people’s lives, as well as in the way the world works (man and woman, winter and summer , shadow and light, etc.). From this philosophy, which is also aesthetic, the Maison of Valenza took inspiration for three rings that he called Perfect Harmony.

Anello in oro, diamanti, corallo rosso
Anello in oro, diamanti, corallo rosso

The balance, in this case, was achieved with the use of opaque stone shapes (coral, onyx or turquoise) and a surface paved with diamonds that form the characteristic geometry of the Yin and Yang symbol, which merge to create a perfect harmony. However, it is not a simple representation of the graphic symbol of the cosmological conception, but of a creative elaboration, which has given volume and grace to the jewel without forgetting its iconic origin.

The art of seeing black

/

The new jewels by Jacqueline Cullen, designer who prefers the black color Whitby jet ♦

Sometimes seeing black can be a luxury: she knows this, Jacqueline Cullen, designer specializing in Whitby jet jewelery. Since it is very easy you don’t know what it is, you better explain: Whitby jet is a black fossil material, similar to lignite, which was formed in 180 million years. It is very soft to be worked and is also used to make jewelry. In particular, it is associated with the Victorian era mourning jewelry. The fashion to wear these jewels, in fact, was started by Queen Victoria, after the death of her husband, Prince Albert.

Jacqueline Cullen has chosen the Whitby jet, trying to enhance the material, carved hand. The fossil material is then combined with gold and diamonds, blacks of course, with some concessions to the hue champagne in rare cases. The result has a certain charm and, in any case, is distinguished from the rest of the common jewelry. But the designer doesn’t just use the Whitby jet. She also loves composing her jewels with Botswana agate together with champagne diamonds, or with stones such as spectrolite or black jade.

The 6 rings by Jennifer Lopez

//

Jennifer Lopez‘s engagement rings: she has collected six. The most valuable is … ♦ ︎

Is there anything better than a wedding with the man you love? The answer is yes: six engagements are better accompanied by as many precious rings. Or, at least, this is the answer that Jennifer Lopez could give you, who has just announced her new official engagement, with its large diamond ring. Probably JLo is a collector of rings and the rotation of husbands and boyfriends is perhaps due to her desire to get new jewels as a gift.

Jennifer Lopez’s sixth engagement ring, thanks to the comeback of Ben Affleck, was designed and made by Tamara Rahaminov and Nicol Goldfiner, of Rahaminov Diamonds, Los Angeles. The ring has a special diamond: an 8.5-carat natural green gem, set with a white diamond and, surprisingly, on a silver band rather than white gold. Although the choice was probably not made to save money. Green is apparently also JLo’s favorite color. The value? There are those who have estimated the cost of diamonds up to 10 million dollars, because green diamonds are rare and precious but, probably, they cost less. Relatively less, of course.

The previous ring received by the American singer from her ex-boyfriend Alex Rodriguez was instead an emerald-cut diamond of 10-15 carats, with a value of up to 5 million.

L'anello con diamante di Jennifer Lopez

The stone that she had given Alez Rodriguez has an emerald cut and the jewel is in Art Deco style. Perhaps not by chance it is very similar to that received by Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex who has considerable popularity (even if the critics are not lacking). In any case, in her first 53 years (which turns on July 24, 2022) JLo received six engagement rings, all of which cost at least six figures.

One of her most precious rings was Harry Winston’s pink diamond that Ben Affleck had previously given her. But the third last ring, also by Harry Winston but this time with an 8.5 carat blue diamond, was very precious: it was estimated that it cost 4 million dollars. It didn’t do much good, though.

Alessio Boschi and the charm of ancient Persia

/

Alessio Boschi is a Renaissance jeweler. That is, he is not satisfied with designing and making simple rings or necklaces, but he has an interdisciplinary attitude: he draws, collects images, is inspired by artists, architects and poets. And above all, he tells. His most famous pieces are not just jewels, but entire stories that Alessio Boschi tells through myths, travels and traditions. For this reason the most extraordinary pieces of him themselves become concentrates of narration, jewels with different semantic levels: the aesthetic one, obviously, the one related to their material value, and the more fascinating one, related to the cultural dimension that inspired the object. A perfect example of this way of interpreting jewelry is the latest creation by Alessio Boschi: a ring is dedicated to Rumi, an Iranian poet of the thirteenth century.

Fascinated by the traditions of the Persian world, the jeweler was fascinated by the strongly spiritual verses marked by Rumi’s personal and meditative relationship with the divinity. An approach that Boschi still felt very current in the period of the pandemic, which favored introspection and reflection. As always, in his creations the incredible technique in building a jewel starts from a very precise idea: in this case the rotating movement of the ring recalls the dance of the dervishes, a practice that consists in turning on oneself to the sound of music for forget the ego and focus on God. The round shape takes up the dome of the mausoleum of Mevlana, in Konya, in the arid Anatolian steppe, where the poet died. Turquoise are the twisted columns inside the building. And under the dome, which opens, Alessio Boschi has reserved a surprise, his specialty.

Mezzaluna still rises for Al Coro

Many jewelry brands are inspired by the Italian goldsmith tradition, often adopting names in Italian. Few, however, really have a link with the country of Dante and Raphael. Al Coro, on the contrary, has a solid link with Italy and, in particular, with the Veneto goldsmith district. Al Coro is a German brand, founded in 1964 by a Venetian goldsmith who emigrated to Germany, Giuliano Corolli, and is now managed by the descendants Alexander and Daniel. It is no coincidence that the names of the Al Coro collections refer to Italy of origin, such as Serenata, Caramella, Goccia, Palladio and the iconic Mezzaluna.

Celebrated three years ago the 20 springs of the collection, Al Coro continues to renew the Mezzaluna line with new variations, such as those launched in 2022. The jewels once again explore the sign of the crescent moon and use pink or white gold, also in a black rhodium-plated version. , together with white diamond pavé, or champagne. But the collection, which after 20 years has a number of maxi jewels, also includes jewels with semi-precious stones such as topaz and moonstone.

Antonini in Lucca with Moi et Toi

/

Journey from South to North or, more precisely, to the center of Italy. After the collections dedicated to Syracuse and Matera, the Milanese brand Antonini goes up the peninsula to stop in Tuscany: the new collection, in fact, is inspired by Lucca. Small city, but with a great artistic heritage, Lucca is located close to the Apennine mountains. And it is precisely the contrast between plowed fields, woods and sky that alludes to the choice of semi-precious stones used: blue topaz, green amethyst and smoky quartz. The stones are set in a white or rose gold setting, polished or satin inversion. In addition, small diamonds are lined up on the metal circle.

The same idea is chosen for the earrings, also in this case in versions with two or three stones. In the Toi & Moi line, it should be noted that other stones have also been added, such as citrine and amethyst.

How to choose a ring

/

A recurring question among those that come to the gioiellis.com editorial staff is: which ring to give? A simple engagement ring? Or a cocktail ring, perfect to show off at a party? And if the gift coincides with an anniversary, wouldn’t an eternity type ring be better? Let us try to give an answer. But with a premise: posed like this is a very vague question. Giving a jewel as a gift is always a good idea but, at the same time, it is often an expensive purchase: the choice must be carefully evaluated. And to choose a ring well you have to take into account some aspects.

Anello in oro rosa e diamanti by Alex Ball indossato
Anello in oro rosa e diamanti by Alex Ball indossato

What kind of ring?
It is not enough to choose the type of jewel (in this case the ring), but it is necessary to identify the right type of ring. Cocktail? Engagement? For an anniversary? To go to the office every day? The intended use of a ring is the first aspect to choose. When will you wear it? On what occasion? If you want to give a cocktail ring, for example, think if the person who receives it often goes to a party, spends the evenings in a disco, or is a person who loves spending time on social occasions. In this case, a large, eye-catching, colorful cocktail ring is what you need. If, on the other hand, your intention is to give a ring tied to an intimate moment, as a couple, a simple band ring in gold or silver, with or without stone, is the one for you.

Anello di fidanzamento indossato
Anello di fidanzamento indossato

With which clothing?
A ring must be suitable for the type of clothing you are wearing. So before choosing a model, find out what your partner’s style is. Do you always dress in designer clothes? Then, perhaps, she will pay close attention to the name of the jeweler who made the jewel. Do you prefer sporty and undemanding clothes instead? Then it will be more tuned to a no-brand ring, but nice to wear. Is it a formal type? In this case, be careful not to buy an extravagant ring.

What is the shape of the hands?
Well yes, in addition to identifying the ring size (we wrote here how to do it), pay attention to the shape of the hands. If they are small and small, a large and heavy ring will seem out of tune. If, on the contrary, the hands are large, the ring must also be proportionate to the measurements of the wearer.

Prova di un anello
Prova di un anello

What is your budget?
Avoid buying a ring that costs too much: it is useless to give a jewel and then not have the money to pay for a dinner. But at the same time, do not save on the purchase of a ring: it is a jewel that will be worn for years and that will have to testify the intentions of those who donated it. You don’t want every time he looks at it, you think you’re mean, right?

Anello della collezione Vie Privée indossato
Giorgio Visconti, anello della collezione Vie Privée indossato

Choose the right stone
If you want to give a ring with a stone, choose a diamond. With a diamond you are on the safe side, it is unlikely that it will not be appreciated. But a diamond costs more than many other stones which are still a good choice. Aquamarine, amethyst, garnet, tanzanite, in addition to the classic precious stones such as emerald, ruby and sapphire, can be a valid alternative. An idea: you could give a ring with the gem tied to the birthday month. The birthstones can be found here.

What kind of ring

If your gift concerns the classic marriage request, which now also requires (??) someone willing to make the video while you kneel and show the ring (with the hope that she does not answer “no”), the solitaire is the ring that’s right for you. There are infinite variations, but the concept is always the same: a gold circle, more often white, with a diamond that stands out lonely and bright. How to choose? We wrote about it here.

Anello di fidanzamento
Anello di fidanzamento solitaire

But there are also many other types of rings. If the gift coincides with an important anniversary, even in this case choosing a diamond ring is always good. For example with an eternity type ring, if the anniversary is related to a couple relationship. As the name suggests, eternity symbolizes a love relationship that does not stop, which will last forever. Since the eternity ring is composed of a series of diamonds (but there are also versions with other stones) positioned along the band of the jewel, this type has the drawback of being often a little expensive. If, on the other hand, the anniversary refers to something less related to the passion of the couple, the choices may be different. A classic gift is a ring with colored stones: rubies, emeralds, sapphires. But also with spinel, rubellite, peridot or other semi-precious stones. In this case, the size of the stones and their visibility are much more important

If, on the other hand, you want to give a ring for your birthday, Christmas or to celebrate an event (or because you feel like it) you can opt for a cocktail ring. This choice, however, is very delicate. A cocktail ring does not have a classic style, like a diamond ring. Instead, they are fancy rings with a rather voluminous shape. Giving a ring like this also means knowing in depth the tastes of the woman who will wear it. In short, it is a risky choice but, certainly, a cocktail ring can be a very welcome gift. Provided you get the right choice.

Hulchi Belluni, new jewels, diamonds and Feng Shui

///

The new jewels by Hulchi Belluni: born in Belgium, they are produced in Italy, but they also have a hint of the Orient ♦

Martine Hul is a diamond pavé specialist. And she couldn’t be otherwise: she lives and works in the heart of the diamond capital, Antwerp, Belgium. She is a professional in the jewelry industry with a long experience behind her. In 2001 she decided to found her own jewelry line under the Hulchi Belluni brand, which sounds Italian. The explanation is there: the word Hulchi derives from the foundress’s surname (Hul) to which is added (chi), which is a reference to Eastern philosophy. Belluni, on the other hand, sounds similar to the Italian words “bella luna”  (beautiful moon). Because Italy was also a source of inspiration for the Belgian designer.

Anello in oro rosa e diamanti della collezione Cheri

In fact, among the collections there are also jewelry lines with the Italian name such as Cubini or Funghetti. The Belgian Maison also has another link with Italy: its jewels are in fact made in Arezzo. However, not all pavé diamonds are the same: the formula of setting many small stones next to each other alternates with elaborate shapes in pink, yellow or white gold.

But that is not all. Because to distinguish the Belgian brand there is also the choice of designing the jewels in line with the principles of Feng Shui. If you don’t know what it is, we quote the definition from Wikipedia: “Taoist geomantic art of China, an auxiliary of architecture, akin to Western geomancy. Unlike this, however, it also takes into consideration aspects of the psyche and astrology. There is currently no scientific proof of his hypotheses. ” But whether you are fascinated by Feng Shui or not, the jewels are certainly real.

Chains with Fantasy for Fawaz Gruosi

///

If there is one thing that Fawaz Gruosi does not lack, it is fantasy. In his new Maison, created in his image and likeness, the jeweler unleashes his proven experience, together with the usual gift of creativity. The Fantasy line was born on this basis, a collection inspired by the eternal shape of the chain. It takes imagination, in fact, to propose chains that are different from those commonly found on the market, but also from those that offer other brands devoted to design. Mission accomplished.

Two sautoirs feature flat, elongated and organically shaped oval rings in pink, gold and ivory ceramic, or white, gold and black ceramic. For some models, diamonds are added, with smaller tonneau-shaped links, that is, more rounded. The gems are arranged in an apparently random way, but in reality with a perfect balance. The jewelry clasp was specially developed in Fawaz Gruosi’s atelier in Geneva so that it can be seamlessly integrated into the design.

The collection also includes bracelets, with the same style and the same materials: they are available in pink gold and ivory ceramic, or in white gold and black ceramic, with each link made unique by the original par hazard diamond setting. Fantasy earrings are composed of a sequence of rings in pink or white gold joined by small tonneau-shaped links, ending with a drop of ivory or black ceramic. Each earring is individually signed with a letter F on the back, which also indicates that the earring must be worn on the right lobe, while the letter G indicates the left. Finally, there is no shortage of rings in the Fantasy collection. In this case the chain has rounded links to follow the shape of the finger and adapt better.

The shape of the jewels, without being extravagant, is a mix of modern styles from which occasionally some oriental allusion emerges. Gumuchian also offers important pieces, such as earrings with emeralds or the ring with a large cabochon sapphire in the center. Furthermore, two collections are linked to philanthropic objectives. The first is dedicated to the protection of bees, insects that are fundamental for natural balance: the jewels use the hexagonal shape of the cells in the hives. The second also serves to finance the cardiology department of the Columbia Medical Center: it is no coincidence that the collection is called Tiny Hearts.

For ten years Melissa Kaye has been dealing with complicated financial products in the world’s most prestigious business bank, Goldman Sachs. And with a leading role: vice president Credit Derivatives Strategist, after a degree in computer science and engineering at the Mit of Boston. Two years later, here the great debut with his luxury jewelry brand. Reaching her goals for many years was the style of work, even in jewelry she applied the same rules of business: creativity combined with a practical sense of business. And she did not abandon completely the scientific teachings learned during the degree, given that his jewels have rigorous forms, with well-defined geometries. Of course, with some poetic license, to avoid excessive rigor.
Gold and diamonds are the most used elements and also determine a price range that goes from about 5,000 to 15,000 dollars, with a top of over 36,000 dollars for a necklace with diamonds for 6.86 carats trillion cut.

Inlays, gems, contrasts: Retrouvaí’s vintage inspirations

/

A stone within another stone: the technique of inlaying with different materials is ancient and is the one adopted for many jewels by Kirsty Stone (a name, a destiny), Canadian designer of the Retrouvaí brand, based in Los Angeles. The designer moved to the United States shortly after graduation and co-founded an architectural firm with a friend, before choosing the jewelry. Perhaps also for this imprinting the geometries of the jewels are so precise. The name of the brand needs an explanation: it is a word inspired by the pronunciation of Retrovailles, a French term that indicates something that reconnects to the past. In this case the inlay technique.

But not only that: the designer has a penchant for vintage objects and her jewels, even if they have a modern shape, often allude to something that is distant in time, such as chevalier-style rings or pendants that look like cameos. For example, compass rings seem to indicate nostalgia for places elsewhere. Retrouvaí jewelry is often made with unusual stones. Like rhodochrosite, lapis lazuli and turquoise welcome different types of gems, such as morganite, and create a pleasant contrast. Often with a contrast between a matte and a transparent surface.

Takayas Mizuno’s rings between manga and video games

/

He is a Japanese jeweler working in Los Angeles. Not only that: Takayas Mizuno is also an artist from Ikebana, the fourth generation of a family specializing in flower arrangements. In short, he seems to be a soul full of poetry. But Takayas, who personally designs and manufactures his jewels, has also decided to fly on the wings of fantasy. A good part of his production, in fact, consists of rings inspired by manga, Japanese cartoons and even the most popular video games.

On the other hand, what do young people do before getting married? They play on the Playstation or other platforms with video games like Final Fantasy or Bloodborne. Or like the ring inspired by two figures from Japanese folklore, such as Kitsune, a fox who possesses paranormal abilities that increase as they age, and Sesshōmaru, an antagonist transformed into an anti-hero in the manga and anime series Inuyasha.

Buying an engagement ring or a wedding ring inspired by characters or situations linked to the fantasy world, in short, can maintain a link with one’s youth. The rings are, however, full-blown jewels, in gold and precious stones such as diamonds, rubies or sapphires.

Spring in gold color for Michael Kors

///

Anyone who buys a dress or a jewel signed by one of the fashion companies wants something that stands out from the rest, but not too much. Indeed, most of the time he wants his object, whether it be a dress or a jewel, to become a recognized icon, a symbol of status or belonging to one of the tribes that crowd street style, for example. Also part of this category is the American brand Michael Kors, which for some time has also been offering accessories and bijoux alongside the clothing lines.

For spring 2022, the Michael Kors brand, which is made by Fossil, presents metal bijoux with gold PVD with a clearly visible logo, which from a simple sign of recognition becomes a design motif in the composition of rings, large chains for bracelets and necklaces, in a bit of a rapper style, and large hoop earrings. The prices are approximately 200-250 dollars or euros for a bracelet and necklace, 150-160 for the earrings, while for the ring it drops to approximately 130.

The rings of the British royals

/

Engagement rings of the protagonists of the British royal family. Those of Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, Camilla and … ♦ ︎

The many fans of chronicles from the British royal family are preparing for a new wedding. After those of Prince Harry and Maghen Markle there were those of Eugenie, second child of Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, with Jack Brooksbank, then those of Beatrice of York with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Or of nobles linked in some way to the royal family, such as Lady Gabriella Windsor, daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, who married Thomas Kingston.

The father of the bride, Prince Michael of Kent, is the son of George, Duke of Kent and Navy of Greece. He is also the nephew of King George V, who reigned from 1910 until January 20, 1936. He is therefore the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. In short, it is always part of the royal family, as evidenced by the fact that Lady Gabriella got married in the same place where the weddings of Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenia were celebrated (Kate Middleton and William instead said yes in the Abbey of Westminster).

As always, attention is also paid to everything around events of this type. For example, to the jewels that noble brides wear. Often the jewels worn by members of the royal family, in fact, reveal bonds and hierarchies, as well as being particularly valuable objects. In particular, the rings worn by girlfriends and brides of the British royal family all have a story to tell.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge

Kate Middleton presented herself in public with the ring of engagement that belonged to Princess Diana: a way to emphasize also a leading role and an unconditional entry into the royal family. The ring has a 12 karat Ceylon oval blue sapphire and is surrounded by 14 diamonds. The gift was a symbolic act and also a decision on which Prince William has meditated: before offering it to the future bride it seems that he kept the ring in his pocket for three weeks while on vacation with Kate in Kenya. In short, it is certainly not an impulsive one.

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex

Meghan’s engagement ring was designed by Prince Harry personally. The ring is of the trilogy type, with three diamonds: the center stone, larger, comes from Botswana, where the couple had spent their holidays together. Not secondary aspect: the other two diamonds belonged to the Princess Diana jewelry collection. Also in this case, in short, there is a clear connection with the family history.

Queen Elizabeth II

Like his nephew Harry, Prince Philip, husband of Elizabeth II, who passed away in 2021, also designed the engagement ring. This is a square diamond ring of approximately 3 carats, made for her more than 70 years ago. This is not an exceptional link, but for a reason: austerity after the Second War advised against excessive ostentation of wealth. The diamond had previously been set in a tiara that belonged to Philip’s mother.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall

The second wife of Prince Charles (from February 2005), received a ring with five carat diamonds. In this case it is a family ring: it was built in 1920 and belonged to the Queen Mother. The central diamond is square cut and is surrounded by six baguette-cut diamonds.

Zara Phillips

Zara (Anne Elizabeth) Phillips, married to Mike Tindall, is the daughter of Princess Anne, sister of the Queen, and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips. She is therefore the second granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth. For engagement Zara received a diamond solitaire ring set by Mike Tindall on a platinum band studded with small diamonds.

Princess Eugenia

Sarah Ferguson’s daughter sported a ring with sapphire padparadscha, one of the rarest varieties of stone. It is an oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds and set on a Welsh gold ring, perhaps a gift from the queen. Among other things, the ring resembles that of Eugenie’s mother, Sarah Ferguson, when she became engaged to Prince Andrew in 1986.

The engagement ring of the Duchess of York was a Burmese ruby surrounded by diamonds, designed by Prince Andrew. Which, however, has confessed to having been helped by jewelers in charge of making the ring.

Princess Diana

In 1981 Lady Diana’s engagement ring was the first tear to the royal protocol: it was chosen, in fact, from the catalog of Garrad, a London jeweler. The tradition, in fact, foresaw that members of the royal family did not wear jewels that could be bought by any citizen (obviously rich enough to be able to afford it).

On the Moon with Jaqueline Cullen

//

The Moon and the planets interpreted in Jaqueline Cullen’s jewels ♦ ︎

Art does not like middle ways. And not even designers like Jaqueline Cullen lull themselves into compromise. On the contrary, they take specific roads, either on one side or the other. Jaqueline Cullen, for example, had adopted black as the main color for her jewelry a year ago. And to follow this inspiration, she had used materials such as whitby jet (a kind of fossil wood) and black diamond. But art does not like the middle ground. The designer also took the opposite path: all white.

Instead of the whitby jet black, used for other jewels, Jaqueline chose white agate, in all its shades, from the milky color to that with a pale blue shade. Planets and satellites, in the photographs of the Hubble Space Telescope, are all dotted with craters. And in the jewels of the Galactica collection, the holes are transformed into small champagne-colored or ice-blue diamonds, which dot the surface. But not only. For her jewels, the designer also used variegated Botswana agate, a stone with infinite shades, or labradorite, again with small diamonds set, or iridescent spectrolite. All jewels are handmade in London, where the designer’s Maison is based.
