India in London with Pomegranate

The charm of India is contagious: one of the jewelery designers fascinated by the culture and traditions of the great Asian country is the Londoner Katie Bulatovic, who has been working in the jewelery sector for over 20 years, after an experience in the Harvey Nichols department store, and trained as a gemologist Al Gia and founded Pomegranate, considered a magical fruit and the closest thing to a gem mine. Her boutique is located in the heart of London, in Kensington Square. But the heart is fixed in Jaipur, the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan, which is also a famous district for the production of jewelry and gem cutting. And where the jewels of Pomegranate are made. But before opening her own boutique in 2009, Katie sold her first jewels among the stalls of Portobello, Covent Garden Market and at fairs and events. Since then she has come a long way.

They are jewels made with sterling silver, also plated, or 18-karat gold. Jaipur also offers the opportunity to choose from a wide range of precious stones, such as diamonds with the traditional polki cut, and semi-precious. Gemology skills allow Katie to use microscopes, refractometers and spectroscopes to identify and assess gem quality. The love for India is also reflected in the style of jewels: the first created by the designer was a Navaratna pendant, a word that indicates nine stones that represent the planets in Vedic astrology.

Halloween jewels

/

Like every year (except 2020, perhaps) Halloween is an opportunity to party. A dark party, of course, which therefore requires suitable clothing. But not only that: even the jewelry department of each woman adapts to the general context. Here, then, are high-class jewels, or with a price that suits anyone, to celebrate the day of darkness.

By the way, maybe not everyone knows that the word Halloween is the contraction of All Hallows’ Evening, but it also has other names such as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve. The celebration was born in the countries of Christian worship on October 31, the eve of the feast of All Saints. In fact, the festival was dedicated to the memory of the dead, including saints and martyrs. Although, according to many, the festival is a legacy of ancient Celtic festivals, in particular the Gaelic festival of Samhain, which marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Today, however, for many Halloween has lost its original meaning and is above all a good reason to party.

The variants of Corali

There are many cases of a woman with a degree in architecture, like Caroline Sillesen, who decides to devote herself to jewelry. Creativity combined with geometry are, after all, the foundations on which the profession of building and environment designer takes place. And, if you reduce this ability to a smaller scale, you will find that jewelry design is not that different. Corali, a brand founded in 2017 by Caroline, also has the advantage of being part of a culture, the Danish one, which over the years has cultivated the art of design.

Designed and produced in Copenhagen, Caroli’s jewels are, however, less icy variants of the typical Nordic design. Caroline Sillesen, in fact, considers her jewels as small sculptures, in which she too instills her passion for the sea. Not surprisingly, the designer holds a master’s degree in fine arts and architecture from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. The jewels are made of 14 karat gold or silver, coral paste and pearls. Her jewelry is also sold through large online shopping platforms.

The law of colors by Larissa Moraes

Vincent Van Gogh is famous for his paintings, which have as their main subject the countryside around Arles, in Provence. But now the colors of her palette have been reborn in Brazil thanks to Larissa Moraes and her jewels. It is no coincidence that the designer from Brasilia, who gave her name to her Maison, was born into a family of artists. One of her collections is, in fact, dedicated to the Dutch painter in love with the sunny landscapes of southern France.

The precious stones overlap creating a 3D effect, reflecting the idea of sunflowers and their numerous layers, to emulate the painting. A matte finish with lines represents the leaves while a glossy finish is used to represent the branches.

Although the vocation between jewelry and painting is testified by impeccable jewelry, Larissa had chosen to pursue a career in the law: she worked for many years as a legal assistant in the Brazilian Senate and in the federal government in Brasilia, the capital of the state. South American. But, in the end, she won the law of her passion: she started designing full time in late 2018 and in March 2020 Larissa won gold in the Design Award and Competition and later in the same year she won MJSA Vision Awards First and Second Place in the Professional Excellence, in the Business category and honorable mention.

The flying nature of Lucy Sylvester

Get dead insects and turn them into jewels. Does this seem like a bizarre idea? Yet it works. And that’s what Lucy Sylvester does, a British goldsmith and designer who loves two things above all: the countryside of her land and nature. Since she was a child Lucy Sylvester has collected flowers, seeds, leaves, collected in the woods near Birmingham or in Oxfordshire: memories that are still preserved in her studio. After her Masters at the School of Jewelery in Birmingham, Lucy has exhibited her work all over the world, she has been featured in many books and magazines and at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in London.

Engagement rings and wedding bands are made from simple lines of grass stems, lichens, leaves, twigs and seeds. But not only. She also uses dead insects as models: the British stag beetle, bees and moths, beetles and flies. A ring was also used in the Game of Thrones series. Each jewel is an exact replica of the insect, which turns into a modern fossil in solid silver or gold. In short, entomology enters jewelry.

Ukrainian jewelry at GemGèneve

GemGenève does not forget Ukraine. Also in the new edition of the event scheduled from 3 to 6 November there will be jewelry creators operating in the country under attack by Russia. In GemGèneve, the organizers planned the Strong & Precious project, which aims to make Ukrainian jewelers known on the international scene. Alongside contemporary creations, the antique jewels of the most famous Ukrainian jeweler of the 20th century, Joseph Marchak, will also be exhibited. He was Fabergé’s main competitor, yet Marchak was called the Cartier of Kiev. Now his jewels occupy a special place in private collections and auction houses.

The rapid rise of Dries Criel

He studied law at the University of Ghent, Belgium. But the only law that really fascinated him is that of jewelry. Dries Criel preferred that of a jewelry designer to the profession of lawyer and in 2019 he founded his Maison. With excellent feedback. So much so that in a short time his jewels were chosen by large online stores as well as on Lady Gaga’s body. His jewels are inspired by different aspects, all related to his interests. For example, from his background in modern dance, from travel, from ancient jewels, from architecture, from contemporary art, but also from ancient Egypt. It goes without saying that, in perfect mainstream, they are also genderless.

Rosa de la Cruz, the art of jewelry design

A rich family of Cuban exiles, which in the United States has become even richer. Her father, Carlos de la Cruz, founded a contemporary art museum, the de la Cruz Contemporary Art Space in Miami. And it is no coincidence that Rosa de la Cruz, who was born in Madrid, started working for a great art museum, the Guggenheim in New York. But the passion for jewelry led Rosa de la Cruz to found a London-based brand in 2010 together with Tierney Gifford Horne, a journalist who worked for Harper’s Bazaar, and as fashion director at Elle and Mademoiselle. Although the passion for art, a family legacy, has remained, the jewels have flanked the collections of paintings and sculptures, as well as refined sets of plates and glasses.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia Law School, the designer has also studied art and architecture courses, she has worked on design projects, including fashion, illustration and interior design. In short, a creative without borders. The Rosa de la Cruz London brand, which is based in the British capital, does not, however, launch itself into the search for avant-garde design. As evidenced by the Stars collection made up, as the name indicates, of very traditional stars.

The winners of the 2022 Couture Design Awards

Every year the Couture in Las Vegas stops with bated breath: who is the winners of the Couture Design Awards? The award ceremony, which this year was decided by a jury composed of Nikos Koulis, Juliet de La Rouchefoucauld, Tanika Winsdom, Diana Schade and Stellene Volandes, is one of the highlights of the event in the capital of Nevada. All the pieces participating in the design competition are exhibited days in advance and everyone wonders who, in the end, will be awarded.

The winners, at the end, are announced during the celebration of the Couture Design Awards on Saturday night. In addition to those indicated by the jury, the community of retailers votes for the three finalists of the Peoples’ Choice Award via SMS. Among the winners, this year there are also two Italian jewelers: Gismondi 1754 and Mariani 1878: both with roots that sink into history, in short.

Best in Diamonds above $ 20,000: Gismondi 1754
Gismondi 1754 was awarded the prize, collected by Massimo Gismondi, creative director and CEO, for his necklace, Raggio di Sole, a unique piece inspired by the early morning sun. The Italian Maison was also a finalist for the People’s Choice Award. Gismondi had already won the Couture Award in 2019 for his necklace from the Essenza Collection from which the earring was also born. The Raggio di Sole series required over 600 hours of work for six months. It is composed of 27.83 carats of pear-cut white diamonds and 16.04 carats of fancy yellow diamonds. The jewel, together with the bracelet and earrings, were completed shortly before Couture. The ring will complete the collection. Raggio di Sole was inspired, in 2020 during the lockdown, one early morning in a chalet in Valtournenche (Alps, Italy) in front of a coffee while the sun rose behind the mountain top. The necklace is his interpretation of the first rays that create a crown behind the mountain as it began to light up the sky.

Minty Sky jwl jewels in the sky

/

At a time when Russia is not enjoying great popularity in the West, designer Elizaveta Chaykina left Moscow to participate in GemGèneve, Switzerland. It cannot be said that the designer lacks resourcefulness: her jewels were exhibited a few meters from those of Strong & Precious, an initiative to present the work of some Ukrainian jewelry designers. But politics (and sad war events) do not have anything to do with the work of Elizaveta, who founded the Russian jewelry brand Minty Sky jwl, originally from “a Siberian city in the middle of the steppe”.

Anello in oro bianco con zaffiro giallo e diamanti

Liza Chaikina says it took seven years to create her own style, to develop an inner vision of beauty and an extraordinary ability to distinguish gems by touch. She is also the author of the book Russian Emptiness, and has chosen the sky as her main source of inspiration and as a reference to her brand. She uses only natural stones. For example, even gray, yellow, pink, salt and pepper diamonds, which are new in Russia. The jewels are in gold or silver, without plating, the metal “is what it seems”. In addition, together with the classic emeralds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds, she uses rarer stones such as andesine, andalusite, iridescent garnet, tanzanite, accompanied by certificates of the gemological laboratories, attached to most of the jewels. «Our values», explains Liza Chaikina, «are ethical production located in Russia, love for nature and the world around us and emotional involvement in the process of creating a product». These are values that everyone can share, even in the West.

Anand Shah, yellow fantasies

///

The prodigious gold jewels of one of the greatest Indian designers: Anand Shah ♦ ︎

He is one of the great jewelry designers of India, the country that more than others in the world loves gold and precious stones. But, unlike his fellow countrymen, Anand Shah does not try to imitate Western style. On the contrary, it reinterprets the Indian tradition, but with the addition of a lot of imagination. At top of all his choices, for example, there is to use gold, yellow, true to 22 carats. A choice that is also that of Indian tradition. So much so that years ago the World Gold Council has ranked the designer as one of the ten best gold jewelry artists in the world.

Anand Shah has also won the Solitaire Design Awards nine times, a prestigious jewelry contest organized annually by the Gem and Jewelery Export Promotion Council of India.

In his jewels there are those who are inspired by the world of flowers. And there’s a reason: he loves to compose the bouquet of flowers (the real ones) alone. And because he’s a creative designer, he even designs home and office environments, creates personalized greeting cards and even loves to design clothes for his wife, Parul. At the center of its activity, however, remains that of jewelery. It is an art that he learned in Mumbai and also thanks to many trips to Italy: “they taught me about design and technology and in the process I acquired a greater knowledge of gold”, he explained.

The jewels of the year of the tiger

From ox (2021) to tiger (2022): there is a big difference. According to the Chinese horoscope, this will be the year marked by the most ferocious feline. But also, as always, the occasion to celebrate the Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, which is the most important traditional event not only in China, but also in Asian countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore. The date changes every year: this year the Chinese New Year is Tuesday 1 February. 2022, therefore, is the year of the Tiger, a sign that is repeated (like the others) every 12 years: the last time was in 2010.

According to astrologers (but you don’t need to be a star expert to understand this), the tiger is a symbol of strength and courage. Whether who was born in a year of the tiger (1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010) is really strong and courageous is all to be verified. In any case, to celebrate the Chinese New Year or, simply, to stay tuned to the astrological year, there are many jewels inspired by the feline with streaked fur: from pieces of high jewelry such as that of Caricato by Paula Crevoshay, to simple pendants by Pandora. To you the choice.

Ali Grace’s New York style

/

The nature of California, where she grew up, and the vibes of New York City, where she lives and works today. The sum of these opposite (or complementary) experiences are summarized in the jewels of Ali Grace, a designer who started selling her creations when she was eight. Early. And at 14 she was already distributing her jewels nationwide. Now, however, she no longer uses plastic beads: the jewels are created with natural stones such as turquoise, or small diamonds, sterling silver, 14-karat gold and brass. The idea is to combine raw and refined materials, a formal style with irregularity. Ali Grace, who lived in Paris for a while, also used antique pendants for a small limited edition collection.

Her jewels are created from lost-wax casting patterns and are priced from $ 400 to $ 5,000. Ali Grace uses recycled precious metals, as well as diamonds and precious stones are ethically and sustainably sourced. A little surprisingly, her style icons are Keith Richard, the guitarist of the Rolling Stones, and the French fashion celebrity Michéle Lamy.

Very Peri colored jewels for 2022

Like every year, Pantone presented what defines the color of the year. For 2022, therefore, the Pantone marked with the number 17-3938 also had a name: Very Peri. The name indicates a shade of periwinkle (English: periwinkle). Basically, a violet color. But it would be too simple to call it that, as it has been for a few thousand years. Pantone, in fact, claims that “Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and of the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways. ” Think of it as you like. The fact is that periwinkle-colored jewels could be all the rage in 2022.

If, on the other hand, you are wondering why the color purple (pardon, periwinkle) touched in 2022, you should know that the color of the year is a marketing idea designed by Pantone to make its brand more famous. The color of the year, in fact, has only existed since 2000, when the Pantone Color Institute (which is within the company) began advertising the Color of the Year. And it is this body within Pantone that chooses the color of the year. Pantone, of course.
