What is a black opal worth

What is a black opal? How much is it worth? And why is it often considered more valuable than other opals? Here’s what you need to know about the black opal ♦ ︎

Think about it: jewels with a black opal in the center are more and more appreciated. Not only: on average they cost more than others. The opal is a stone that came back into fashion a few years ago and black opal is the queen of this type of gem.

The opal is a stone famous for its iridescent shades. In geology it is considered a mineraloid, and is chemically an amorphous hydrated form of silica. It is also the national gemstone of Australia, the countries where black opals are found. And, in particular, in the area of Lightning Ridge, the capital of opals.

We must also add that there are two large classes of opal: the precious ones and the common ones. The precious opal has its famous iridescence, while the common opal does not. The iridescence is caused by the internal structure of the opal, which causes the diffraction of light, with the consequent change in color. The black opal is considered the rarest, while white, gray and green are the most common.

Chopard, Fiori d’Opali, anello con opale nero di 20 carati con pistilli di diamanti montati su oro bianco rodiato nero e petali cesellati in titanio colorato di striature blu e gambo con tasavoriti verdi, lazuliti e diamanti brown

Why is the black opal so rare? The tough activity to extraction is the most frustrating activities in the world. To find a black opal you have to dig holes at random in particularly rich areas, where the diggers fit into an extremely deep well, risking to fall for about twenty meters, they risk their lives. In short, when you see a jewel with black opal, know that finding it has cost effort and risk. Of course, the prospect of a profit corresponds to work: a large black opal can reach up to 15,000 Australian dollars (about 9200 euros).

What distinguishes black opals? Black opals have traces of carbon and iron oxide. The body of the gem varies from black to dark gray. In short, the black opal is not black: it is colored on a dark background. It is this unusually dark shade that allows rainbow iridescences to appear more vividly than light opals. Of course, not all black opals are the same: the value of stone may depend on many other factors, such as brightness, body color, shape, colors, and any defects.

How are opals cut? Usually, the classic cut of opal is the cabochon. The way an opal has been polished and cut has a great influence on the overall value. The cut affects its final price.

For those who believe … There are many people who imagine that stones have special powers and can affect the lives of men. In the Middle Ages, the opal was considered a lucky stone. Some thought it could guarantee invisibility if the opal was wrapped in a fresh, hand-held bay leaf, much like the Harry Potter cloak. But in the nineteenth century, the opal became suddenly suspect. In a novel by Walter Scott a woman wears an opal with supernatural powers: when a drop of holy water falls on the stone, it becomes colorless and the woman dies shortly after. After the novel, the opal was referred to as porta bad luck and sales in Europe fell by 50%. Who was right?

How to avoid allergies to nickel

Have you ever found marks on the skin where you have worn rings, necklaces or earrings? They could have been caused by nickel allergy. Here’s what you need to do to avoid nickel allergy ♦

Receiving a beautiful ring as a gift and not being able to wear it: the fault lies with the allergy. It often happens that a jewel, perhaps a favorite, turns out to be an enemy of the skin. The most common cause is nickel dermatitis, also called contact dermatitis, nickel allergy. The problem can arise at any time and at any age. Even jewelry that up to that moment has never caused irritation, can suddenly turn out to be harmful. Each individual human body reacts differently to nickel depending on tolerance and sensitivity level. Among other things, there are rare cases in which the allergy is also manifested by wearing gold or silver jewelry: but the most frequent cause is, also in this case, the nickel content present in bijoux. Pure gold and silver are metals too soft to be transformed into frames. Nickel has often been added, like zinc and copper, to make gold and silver more resistant and allow it to give the desired shape. In addition, the nickel gives a shiny effect. Zinc and copper do not damage the skin, which is instead more and more nickel.

Will it be dermatitis-proof jewels?

The dangerous metals. Keep in mind that 14-karat or 18-karat gold contains a greater amount of different metals than 24-karat gold, the only one that is completely pure. In short, the purer the gold, the less allergies it causes. Nickel is also used in jewelry in alloys with platinum and white gold. But platinum jewelry is quite expensive and, statistically, there are fewer cases of allergies, as it is rarer. In addition, platinum and white gold are also often reinforced with palladium, a metal that does not cause allergies. However, it is more expensive.

Often the allergy is caused by the contact of the metal with the most sensitive layer of the skin, such as the hole in the nose or ear. Nickel penetrates through the skin into the bloodstream of the body. At this point the cells react to the nickel. Another cause that can give rise to allergies is sweat. When it is hot and the jewelry is worn for a long time, the skin sweats. Perspiration comes into contact with the metal of the jewelry, dissolves the nickel, and forms nickel salts. The salt reacts on contact with the skin and causes the allergy. It is commonly believed that women suffer more than men, but the number of men wearing jewelry is far less.

Symptoms. Nickel allergy can cause blood loss, or swelling and the production of pus. In most cases, however, there is a constant itching or burning around the area where the skin has been in direct contact with the jewel. More rarely, allergic people find a blue tint on their finger after removing a ring, or a rash or red spots on the skin. Nickel allergy sufferers end up wearing only stainless steel jewelry. In fact, this metal also contains nickel, but it also does not leave it as it is hermetically held, it rarely comes in direct contact with the skin.

Another enemy are the traces of soap and water under the jewels. The cleansers break the protective shield of the skin and allow the nickel to come into direct contact with the deeper layers. Earrings and rings are more likely to retain water droplets after a bath. Taking off your jewelry before washing is a useful precaution, especially when doing housework and hands being washed countless times. Detergents or other cleaning products that get under a ring can cause allergy. Unfortunately, there are no cures: dermatologists offer some medical treatments, but they are usually only effective for the short term. After some time, regardless of the treatment, the allergy reappears.

Dermatite da anello
Ring dermatitis

How to avoid allergy. If you really don’t want to do it, or if you forget to remove the rings, pass a layer of transparent nail polish inside the jewel: it can help avoid direct contact with the metal. Another precaution to avoid allergies can be to apply talcum powder before wearing the jewelry: in this way, humidity is avoided. Furthermore, those who fear an allergic reaction must be careful not to wear tight earrings, rings or chains: if the air passes through the jewel it is less likely that contact with the skin causes a reaction. Alternating jewelry more often reduces the risk. Finally, remember to keep the jewelry clean and dry. Those who are very sensitive to nickel can choose lacquered or palladium-plated jewelry.

Do you want to know what nickel is?
It seems the original name of this metal, nickel, derives from the Swedish word Nickel, diminutive of a proper name, Nicolaus. And in the tradition of the Nordic country Nicolaus was a name given to people of little value, but also to goblins. But metal has nothing to do with Henry Potter’s wizarding world. Nickel, or nickel, is a metal that was already used in the Bronze Age, over 3500 years ago, in the Middle East and China. In the West, nickel came into common use in the mid-eighteenth century, when Baron Axel Frederik Cronstedt, attempting to extract copper from a mineral, niccolite, obtained a white metal which he called nickel, a name that derives from the German Kupfernickel, that is, false copper, or from nickel (elf, little devil in German).

Why is it used?
Nickel is a white, silvery metal. It belongs to the iron group and is therefore hard, but also malleable, easy to work with. It is also appreciated in jewelery for the properties it gives when alloyed with gold, platinum or silver, especially because it gives strength and is resistant to corrosion.

Una moneta da 5 centesimi: contiene nickel

Nickel, in addition to being present in many jewelry alloys together with gold, is used in a wide range of products. So if you have signs of allergy on your hands, maybe it’s not your earrings, but cutlery, watches, scissors, lighters, cell phones, doorknobs and even coins. And if you have marks on your neck, it is not certain that the cause is the necklace, but perhaps glasses, food and pots…

The first thing to do, in short, is to check with which metals you come in contact often.

But, be careful: maybe you do not know that nickel can also be hidden in cosmetics, personal hygiene products (such as hair dyes, toothpastes, shampoos, nail polishes). In this case hunting nickel is easier. Read the label well: the presence of nickel must be declared by the manufacturer, even if you may find it written in small letters. Finished? No: who is really very allergic also risks at the table. In fact, some foods naturally contain nickel, even if in very small quantities. In any case, if your allergy does not disappear, eliminate these foods.

Here are the forbidden foods:

blueberries, oats, buckwheat, walnuts and hazelnuts, broccoli, potatoes, baking powder, apricots, cabbage, spinach, peanuts, carrots, tomatoes, oysters, figs, onions, asparagus, lentils, whole wheat flour, beans, liquorice, cooked and raw pears, mushrooms, corn, lettuce, peas, almonds, tea, lobster, margarine, cocoa and chocolate, avocado.

Mirtilli
Blueberries: good, but…

Fortunately, according to experts, only less than 20% of nickel allergies are caused or worsened by food. But if this is the case you have to eliminate these foods altogether for at least a month or a month and a half before you see a difference. In any case, do not worry, you do not risk starving.

Here are some foods without nickel:

radicchio, endive, fennel, aubergines, courgettes, peppers, cucumbers, beets, watermelon, melon, citrus fruits, peaches, bananas, strawberries, grapes, milk and dairy products, 00 flour, rice, meat, fish (but not mussels, clams, sea urchins and crustaceans), brewer’s yeast.

Last advices if you suffer from nickel allergy:

    • When you open the tap, run the water for a few minutes to remove any traces of nickel released from the pipes.
If you are cooking a cake, use baking soda instead of baking powder to rise.
Choose pyrex pots, glass, aluminum, unglazed pottery, silargan, teflon. This type of crockery prevents the release of nickel from cutlery or other utensils you use.

The 10 etiquette rules for the engagement ring

The 10 rules of etiquette on the engagement ring in the era of Instagram and Facebook. What are the good manners to respect ♦ ︎

There are 10 rules to know about the engagement ring. Indeed, new rules. Because compared to the past, the engagement ring can now take on a different, more social role. So, be careful: it is good to know these rules when you give or have received your engagement ring.

Beware of social media. Let’s start with social networks: Instagram, Facebook or similar have become part of the life of millions of people. And it often happens that even the most intimate aspects end up being shared over the internet. It is your choice. But be careful when it comes to the engagement ring. The jewel, in this case, is equivalent to a commitment for marriage. Therefore, it is not the simple gift of a precious thing, but something more. Posting a photo of your engagement ring means you are getting married. All right: but before publishing the photo on Instagram or Facebook, warn your parents, relatives or close friends: they will be happy not to learn the good news through a post.

When to show the ring? You will certainly be proud of the engagement ring he gave you. But don’t go overboard in showing it as a trophy. Do you want to publish the photo of the ring on Instagram or Facebook? Ok. In that case, perhaps, don’t forget to include your boyfriend in the image, who is after all the one who asked you to marry him. If it is a particularly expensive ring, avoid underlining it in an internet post: in addition to being a not very delicate boast, it is also dangerous: it can arouse the interest of thieves.

Pick the right time. Advice for him: Do you want to give a ring to ask your girlfriend if she wants to get married with you? Very good. But choose the right time. It is not certain that she is happy that the request and the gift of the ring take place in a public place, nor that the moment becomes a video to be published on the web. Of course, on Instagram or Tik Tok there are many videos in which he kneels and shows her the ring. But it is not certain that all women enjoy sharing such an intimate moment. So, before organizing such a thing (there must be someone making the video), get his opinion on the subject. By the way: it seems that about 40% of wedding requests coincide with a holiday period or on Valentine’s Day. It’s not a casuality.

Can I ask him how much it cost? The answer is no. The ring is a symbol, not a dowry. Of course you are curious to know, but keep your tongue in check. If you really want to know how much your boyfriend has spent, you can ask to describe the jewel to you. If the ring is gold and has a diamond, it will be enough to know how many carats (or, more likely, how many tenths of a carat) the stone is to get a quick idea of the cost of the ring. Then, check the price on the internet. But is it so important to know?

What if it’s not a diamond? If the fiancé does not have great financial means, it is likely that instead of a diamond ring, she purchases a piece of jewelry with a synthetic stone, such as cubic zirconia, which looks like a diamond, but she is not. Or a moissanite ring, just as synthetic. Are you disappointed? Of course, a natural stone is more rewarding, but as long as you don’t weigh too much on your bank account. You would be less happy, in fact, if your fiancé went into debt to buy your ring, since you are about to marry him.

Can the ring be chosen by the woman? In the United States and Great Britain, the custom of choosing the engagement ring as a couple is increasingly widespread. He and she (or he and he or she and she) go to the jeweler together for the purchase. Of course, the surprise no longer exists or, rather, the moment of the marriage request does not coincide with the gift of the ring. But it’s up to you to decide if you like this idea. Talk about it first, on the general side.

The choice of times. The gift of the engagement ring, as mentioned, coincides with the marriage request. How much time must pass from the moment you receive the ring before you let the rest of the world know? Answer: about 1 second. You can immediately inform humanity that you are about to get married. But remember: tell parents and close friends first.

Should the engagement ring be worn immediately? Sure why not? If your boyfriend has done things right, she will also have chosen the right ring size. So, put it on right away.

Does the ring necessarily have a diamond (or similar)? Absolutely not. Of course, the diamond is the most used stone for engagement rings. But it is not mandatory. Princess Diana’s engagement ring had a (large) blue sapphire in the center.

Do I have to wear the engagement ring on the wedding day? It is a choice that is up to you. But do not complicate things: do not wear the ring on the same finger that is about to receive the wedding band. Subsequently, after putting the wedding ring on your finger, you can move the engagement ring and wear both rings on the same finger.

Women willing to pay for their engagement ring

Would you, women, be willing to pay out of your pocket for the engagement ring? No? You are in the minority. There are many women who, to have an engagement ring, are ready to attack their bank account. For sure, for example, this is the opinion of the majority of English women. A study conducted long ago in Britain by the jewelry department of the TV channel Qvc (specializing in online sales) revealed that 54% of British women would be willing to contribute financially to the purchase of their engagement ring. For having one.

Not only that: one in five women confessed to having purchased her own engagement ring herself. What’s the reason? Have men stopped having interest in women, so much so as not to show their love by spending on the ring? Fortunately, this is not the case. Rather, it is the difficult economic situation that makes it less easy for men to open their wallets to buy a ring with a brilliant, also because it has been calculated that the cost of a diamond ring corresponds on average to one or two monthly salaries.

L'anello di fidanzamento della regina Elisabetta II
Queen Elizabeth II’s engagement ring

Buying an engagement ring is not a simple expense. To this is added another factor: women are less and less satisfied with a ring with a 0.000001 carat diamond. On the contrary, they want a jewel to be proudly showing friends and relatives, with a clearly visible gem. But that type of rings, you know, are very expensive. This dissatisfaction pushes many women to enter a jewelry to choose the ring model to be inserted on the finger.

L'anello di fidanzamento di Kate Middleton
Kate Middleton’s engagement ring previously belonged to Diana

Another reason that often causes dissatisfaction is not only the size of the diamond, but also the model of the chosen ring. Although the classic white gold ring with a solitary diamond mounted at the top is the most common engagement ring, there is no shortage of women who have the desire to show off a different jewel, which is distinguished most. It should not be forgotten that the famous engagement ring given by the then Prince Charles (now king) to Diana Spencer was a ring with a large blue sapphire, which then ended up on Kate Middleton’s finger, now Princess of Cambridge.

If you think you choose yourself the engagement ring, however, you must be careful not to ruin your relationship. The purchase of the ring is a delicate moment in life with two, which will remember for a long time, all life. If you don’t want your partner to choose the ring, however, avoid telling him that he would not be able to do it, that he has not understood your tastes or, worse, that it is economically inadequate. Better, however, present your choice as an intelligent solution not to waste money, to avoid waste of time or as an example of a role of less passive woman. It can be a less traumatic explanation and welcomed with serenity by the future husband.

Another technique to choose yourself the engagement ring, but pretending that he has chosen it, it is to bring your partner in front (casually) to the showcase of the jewelry that you have previously identified. Of course you have to be careful not to be too direct, but to make your tastes understand and that you would not mind taking a look at the jewel directly.

What are carats?

How many carats is your diamond in? And how many karats is your gold ring instead? For those who are not a jewelry expert or do not know the basic rules of the world of jewelry, the carats are a big mess. The carats that are the unit of measurement needed for precious stones and pearls, in fact, are a completely different thing from the karats that refer to gold. Did you know? In English, everything is easier: the carats that measure diamonds start with the letter C while those for gold start with the K. In other languages, however, it is written the same way and everything is more complicated.

This is why we must be careful not to confuse the different concepts: the carats of diamonds (or rubies, emeralds, sapphires, etc.) with the karats that are related to gold. Here’s how to distinguish.

Diamante a cuore di Recarlo
Diamond in the heart of Recarlo

The carats of the stones

The carat (the abbreviation is ct) is a unit that indicates the mass of a stone or pearl. Carats are used for convenience, after in past each country regulated itself differently for centuries. For those who traded in diamonds or other stones it was therefore difficult to work. In Florence, for example, the basic unit of measurement was equivalent to 197.2 milligrams, while in London to 205.49. After much discussion, in the end, in 1907 it was decided to adopt 200 milligrams as a carat measure. A single carat, therefore, equals one fifth of 1 gram.

Anello con diamante bianco ovale da 31,82 carati
31.82 carat oval white diamond ring

Now you know exactly how much the diamond on your finger weighs: divide the number of carats by five and you will have the weight in grams. Or, more easily, in milligrams, since it is not common to wear a diamond that weighs 5 carats (and therefore 1 gram). for this reason the carat is divisible into 100 points of 2 milligrams.

Anello di Van Cleef & Arpels a forma bombata con diamanti
Van Cleef & Arpels rounded shape ring with diamonds

By the way, why is the carat called so? The origin seems to be linked to carob seeds. The word carat derives from the Arabic qīrāṭ قيراط, which however is derived from the Greek kerátion κεράτιον, which indicates carob seeds. And these seeds were used to weigh jewels, thanks to their always regular shape. Then the term carat was used in Italy and later in the rest of the world. The use of the carat unit of measurement to weigh diamonds dates back to 1570.

The karats of gold

The carats of diamonds, precious stones and pearls refer to weight. The karats of gold, on the other hand, indicate the percentage of yellow metal present in a jewel, its fineness. The term karat has prevailed among the many systems adopted in the past and, in particular, on the measurement of pounds and ounces, which are still used for the weight of gold, platinum or silver. So why this confusion? Simple: the ancient origin of the word is the same, i.e. the carats used to measure precious materials.

Anello a fascia in oro 22 carati
Band ring in 22 carat gold

In the case of the karats that refer to gold, however, they indicate the thousandths of quantities of gold (or other precious metals) contained in an alloy. The maximum, as regards gold, is 24 karats. You will never find gold of 25 or more carats. The 24 karats indicate that the gold is 100% pure. The 24 karats are the basis for calculating the rest (always for gold). The 18-karat jewels, therefore, are 75% gold. It is calculated as follows: 18: 24 = 0.75. Similarly, a jewel with 14% gold means that it contains slightly more than half of gold, the rest are other metals (14: 24 = 0.58).

In some cases, the karats of gold can also be indicated with the number that refers to the percentage (the result of the arithmetic division). For example, 18-karat gold can also be indicated with the initials 750, 14-karat gold with 583 and so on. Again, if you read the number 375 in a jewel, know that it equals 9 karats.

The karats are also used for silver. The silver sterling, for example, contains 92.5% of silver and 7.5% of other metals, generally copper. It is generally referred to as 925 silver.

Red diamonds, the rarest

Discovering a very rare gem: red diamonds. Did you know they exist? There are few of them and they have crazy prices. But they are beautiful ♦

Have you ever seen a natural red diamond like a ruby? It is very difficult. If only one diamond out of 10 thousand specimens has enough color to be classified as fancy (i.e. fantasy, of a color other than the classic white-colorless). Among the fancy diamonds, the pink ones are considered among the rarest and, if they have an even darker shade of tone, they are even more exceptional. These diamonds almost always also have secondary colors: pink, purple or brown, like the nuance of the Edcora Red Diamond, the largest ever classified by the Gia (5.71 carats) and kept well hidden by its owners, it seems to be a company of Hong Kong, so much so that there are no public photos and the origin of this diamond is not even known.

In short, diamonds that have a red color are very rare. Furthermore, the origins of this coloring are still mysterious. Gemologists have not yet managed to agree on the origin of this shade. The most reliable thesis is that red diamonds are actually very dark pink gems. During the formation of the diamond, this type of stone would have been subjected to such great pressure as to alter the internal molecular structure: atoms out of place, compared to those of common colorless diamonds. But, at the moment, this hypothesis is being discussed.

Il diamante rosso De Young
The De Young Red Diamond

You will never buy a red diamond, unless you are as rich as a sheikh or a hi-tech genius from Silicon Valley. But, in case you are offered one, be careful: the color red may (and is the most likely hypothesis) not entirely natural. In fact, the coloring can also be induced by subjecting a normal colorless diamond to radioactive particles, heating it to high temperatures and then putting it under strong pressure. In short, it is no longer a natural color.

The value of the Brazilian diamond Moussaieff Red Diamond, of 5.11 carats with a Trillion cut, that is triangular, is also known: it was purchased in 2002 for 8 million dollars (about 5.4 million euros) by the jeweler from whom it takes the name. Baptized with the surname of the owner is also the third place, the Kazanjian Red, discovered in the Licthenburg mine in South Africa: it is 5.05 carats and has an emerald cut. In the past it had been mistaken for a ruby due to its blood red color. It has an adventurous history: during the Second World War it was stolen by the Nazis and had various passages until it reached the hands of the president of Kazanjian Diamonds. The 5.03-carat De Young Red purchased in a real estate sale also suffered an error of assessment: it was mistaken for a garnet for its intense red tending to brown. It is also one of the few diamonds visible to all, as it is exhibited at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington.

Il diamante rosso Kazanjian
The Kazanjian red diamond

In short, red diamonds are so rare that most jewelers, even the most famous ones, have never seen one. Currently, 90 percent of the world’s natural pink and red diamonds come from a single source: the Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia. According to the officials of Rio Tinto, the company that owns the mine, these diamonds are almost impossible to find: the quantity of those mined in a year larger than half a carat is laughable and would fit in the palm of your hand. The best pieces are sold at the Pink Diamond Tender, one of the most important international auctions for this category and in 30 years only nine Fancy Red Argyle have been offered. One of these, 0.75 carats, was heart cut and ring mounted together with another diamond, the 0.71 carat Argyle Celestial in a deep blue gray. The combination of two stones with such a difficult cut makes the ring extraordinary. But the 1.56-carat Argyle Phoenix Fancy Red Diamond is the real star: it sold for more than $ 2 million, the highest price for a diamond produced by the mine. But beware, the value of red diamonds is constantly increasing because there are more and more: the Anglo-Australian multinational has planned to stop production.

It happened again: those earrings you like so much caused an allergic reaction. Unfortunately, you are not alone: about 20% of women suffer from allergies to certain metals and earrings are one of the worst enemies. The earlobe, in fact, is a very delicate part of the body. Allergic reaction to nickel, contact dermatitis, is the body’s immune response to something it believes is harmful, just like fighting a bacterium or virus.

Allergic symptoms caused by contact with metal usually appear 24 to 48 hours after wearing the earrings. The discomfort consists of itching, redness, swelling, a feeling of heat and, for those who are very sensitive, even dry skin and blisters. The bad news is that metals that are allergy-proof are very rare. Usually those with these allergies choose hypoallergenic earrings. But the truth is, it’s not always a good idea. What to do if an allergic reaction occurs? Consulting a doctor is always the best idea. Likely, a dermatologist will prescribe remedies such as oral antihistamines and cortisone to reduce inflammation. If, however, the allergy is mild, just do not wear the jewelry and, if necessary, use a soothing cream.

Che cosa fare se si scatena una reazione allergica? Consultare un medico è sempre l’idea migliore.

The word hypoallergenic, in fact, does not mean that they are immune from causing allergic reactions. The term hypoallergenic only means that earrings are less likely to cause an allergy, not that they are 100% guaranteed. Hypoallergenic earrings usually work for most women. But they are not suitable for everyone: there are those who are more unfortunate.

Metals that cause allergies
Nickel is the number one defendant. This metal has long been used in an alloy with gold to make the yellow metal more resistant and attenuate its original color, until it turns white, and is the main source of intolerance for those with sensitive skin. But nickel is not the only metal to cause allergies. Nickel is used in yellow gold. But even pink gold can cause allergies to those who do not tolerate copper, the metal used in alloy for the pink hue. Beware of karats: if 18-karat gold is the best, it still means that 25% of your jewel is made up of other metals, which could cause allergies. If, then, it has 14 karats, it means that almost half of the metal is not gold.

Orecchini indossati

Unfortunately, even if it is always proposed as a hypoallergenic material, steel can also cause allergies (although it is usually offered with the addition of the word surgical, which should reassure those who use it). Steel, in fact, can contain traces of nickel and iron and can cause a reaction in those with hypersensitive skin. If you are allergic to copper, pay attention to brass. This alloy is in fact composed of copper and zinc. Gold-plated jewelry is often made of brass. If you wake up with green earlobes, you have probably been wearing brass compound earrings.

Also pay attention to the plated earrings. Plating usually allows you to keep the prices of the jewel low, but it is a very thin barrier, often not exceeding a few thousandths of a millimeter, in practice the thickness is equivalent to a tenth of a hair. It doesn’t take much to corrode or scratch this surface. If you have metal allergies, a plating may not be enough to prevent your earlobes from reacting.

The good metals
There are metals that are 99% tolerated even by the most sensitive ears. A hypoallergenic metal is platinum, precious and even more robust than gold. Titanium is also low allergy risk. Another metal that does not cause allergies, but is very rarely used in jewelry, is tantalum. It is durable and extremely resistant to corrosion. There are those who propose tantalum wedding rings.

How to transform allergy-causing earrings
If you have earrings that you cannot give up, the best idea is to take them to a jeweler to replace the metal part in contact with the ears with a hypoallergenic material, a good metal in short. You can also try a simpler solution: smear on the clear nail polish pins. Enamel creates a barrier between the nickel and your precious lobes. However, we must remember that this operation must be repeated after wearing the earrings.

Three methods for cleaning earrings

It is necessary to clean jewelry regularly, but it is even more necessary to clean earrings. And the main reasons why you have to clean your earrings often are two: to prevent the jewel from deteriorating and for your health.

The earrings, in fact, are worn in close contact with the skin. In particular, those hanging from the holes in the ear lobes can cause allergies, irritation, redness or worse. It is not uncommon for a pair of earrings that cause an infection: just a micro wound, like a puncture, is enough to make your body come into contact with the microbes housed in a pair of uncleaned earrings. Also, don’t forget that uncleaned earrings are also less bright and beautiful to look at.

Orecchini Lolli Bijoux indossati

Now that you are convinced that the earrings must be cleaned often, let’s see how you can done. There are different methods to clean the earrings but, of course, in addition to your tastes, the right system is also determined by the material that makes up the jewel. Attention: for earrings with pearls, opals or other delicate material special care must be taken. For this type of earrings it is better to use only warm water and a toothbrush with soft bristles.

Lined a cup with aluminum foil usually used for food, with the shiny side on the outside (i.e. upwards). Pour hot (but not too much) water and add a teaspoon or two of baking soda and leave the earrings to soak for an hour. This system is particularly recommended for silver earrings. As always, rinse the earrings and dry. This system is to be avoided for earrings with pearls, opals or other delicate materials.

Bicarbonato e alluminio

Mode number 2
The easiest way to clean your earrings is to dip them in hot water. Be careful, however: there are those who suggest boiling the water and then dipping the jewels. Don’t do it: the water must be warm, but not boiling. In fact, most microbes do not survive temperatures above 60 degrees centigrade (140 degrees Fahrenheit) and, in addition, too high temperatures can ruin the material with which the earrings are made. In the case of earrings that are not too clean, you can dissolve a drop of liquid detergent in the water. Let the earrings rest for about an hour. Then, gently rub the jewelry with a soft bristle toothbrush. Finally, dry the earrings with a soft cotton cloth.

Poche gocce di sapone liquido sono sufficienti
A few drops of liquid soap are enough

Mode number 3
The easiest way to clean the earrings is to rub them with a cotton swab dipped in hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is the liquid that serves to disinfect wounds and, therefore, to kill even the microbes hidden in your earrings. If the jewel is particularly elaborate, you can also help yourself with a stick that is used for cleaning the ears, always soaked in hydrogen peroxide. If the earrings are really very dirty, you can also pour the hydrogen peroxide into a cup and leave the jewels immersed for 5 minutes. After disinfecting the jewels, rinse in cold water, then gently dry them with a cotton cloth, soft but without filaments that can get caught.

Why Roberto Coin’s jewels have a hidden ruby?

We thought it was a known story: instead the reason why a ruby is hidden in Roberto Coin’s jewels is not known by everyone. Yet the idea of inserting a small ruby inside the jewelry is undoubtedly a distinctive aspect of the Italian brand.

Anelli della collezione Roman Barocco
Anelli della collezione Roman Barocco

Therefore, the idea of ruby as a symbolic signature of the Maison of Vicenza is linked to mythology. Roberto Coin, driven by a passion for ancient history, many years ago read three stories related to the stories of the past that sparked his imagination.
Roberto Coin
Roberto Coin

The first of these legends belongs to the world of ancient Egypt and to the pharaohs: the ruby was considered a sort of amulet, which worn in contact with the skin guaranteed eternal love, eternal joy and eternal health. The second legend, however, concerns the Burmese warriors. Apparently they wore the red gem in contact with the skin to defeat wounds and death during the battle. Finally, an old Hindu myth considers rubies to be the precious fruits of Kalpa, the sacred tree of desires and hope. In short, ruby as a magic stone, perhaps associated with life for its blood color.

Fascinated by these myths, Roberto Coin therefore decided to associate his brand with ruby. So in 1996 the launch of the Appassionata collection marked not only the beginning of the history of the Roberto Coin brand, but also the principle of its signature: a small ruby set for the first time within the jewels of the collection. A signature that has remained a hallmark of the Venetian Maison.

All about black gold

At one time, black gold meant oil. Now a little less. On the other hand many jewelers have started and make black gold jewelry. But gold isn’t yellow? So how does it turn into black gold? If you want to know what black gold is and how it is obtained, but also how to clean black gold, you are going to satisfied.

Anello con tormalina gialla e diamanti bianchi e neri su oro nero
Ina Lazarov, ring with yellow tourmaline and black and white diamonds on black gold

In nature, gold is only yellow. Indeed, intense yellow. All the other colors that you can find in a jewel, such as the most common white and pink gold, are the result of particular processes of gold, almost always fusing the yellow metal with others such as silver or copper. Even black gold is the result of particular processes that transform the natural color of the metal. I mean, don’t think there is a black gold mine. So how do you get black gold?

Annamaria Cammilli, anello Dune in oro nero e diamanti
Annamaria Cammilli, Dune ring in black gold and diamonds

How black gold is made

First method. The most used way is plating with galvanic method. It is the same method that is used for other types of plating: a machine deposits tiny particles of another material on the jewel that deposits like a second skin on the original metal thanks to electrolysis. In this case, rhodium or ruthenium is used. The advantage of this system is that it is fast, inexpensive and has a bright metal. The weak point is that, as in all plating processes, care must be taken not to scratch the metal surface in order not to eliminate the surface layer. Over time, moreover, this superficial part could become opaque and fragile. But it does not always happen, it also depends on the use that is made of the jewel.

Anello triplo in oro nero, diamanti neri e smeraldi
Anil Arjandas, triple ring in black gold, black diamonds and emeralds

Second method. As mentioned at the beginning, gold with a color other than yellow is normally obtained by combining different metals. In the case of black gold, for example, cobalt is often used, which is added to the extent of about 25%. Cobalt is often used to blacken metals, for example for work tools, such as drill bits. The electroplating procedure we have just described is also often used. The advantage: with gold combined in alloy with cobalt there are no scratching problems. On the other hand, if you suffer from a nickel allergy you may also have some problems with cobalt, such as irritating dermatitis.

Anello in oro rodiato nero, diamanti e perla
Antonini, ring in black rhodium-plated gold, diamonds and pearl

Third method. Gold does not oxidize like silver, which easily blackens. On the other hand, it can change color if subjected to a powerful laser energy beam. It is not a simple procedure to carry out, because it requires machines powerful enough to intervene on the molecular structure of the metal. So, is this how you get black gold? Yes and no. In theory, jewelry could be made with gold subjected to a laser treatment, but unfortunately it is rather complicated and expensive. Hence, your black gold jewelry is almost certainly not the result of laser treatment.

How many carats does black gold have?

It depends. As with yellow, white or pink gold, the carats depend on the amount of yellow gold used. If the jewel uses the black gold that is obtained in alloy with cobalt, it will have 18 carats if the yellow metal is present for 75%, while if it is 14 carats it means that the percentage drops to 58.3%. It is an aspect to be taken into account in case you want to resell the jewel: it will be evaluated for the percentage of actual gold it contains.

How to clean black gold

Gold is a resistant metal and, especially if it is obtained in alloy with other metals, it does not require special care. You should always avoid putting the jewelry in contact with acid products and, if in contact with the skin, perhaps with products such as creams and cosmetics, it is necessary to regularly maintain cleaning. Particular attention, however, is necessary for jewels obtained with a galvanic process, which are more delicate. To clean the black gold jewelry just a cup of warm water with a couple of drops of liquid soap is enough. After leaving the jewels to soak for about ten minutes, clean them with a toothbrush with soft bristles (no toothpicks or the like to remove dirt). Rinse and dry gently with a cotton cloth. Of course, if the jewel also has pearls or delicate stones (such as opal), caution must be greater.

How much is your stone worth?

How much are the stones in your jewels worth?

Raise your hand if you don’t have at least one jewel with colored gems and have never wondered how much that stone is really worth. Amethyst or ruby, emerald or citrine, sapphire or moonstone: there are not only diamonds. But how much are colored stones worth? How much is a ruby worth? Or an emerald? Or, again, aquamarine? If you want to know how much the gem you have set on the ring is worth, or in a necklace, earrings or bracelet, read here. We try to explain in a simple way what are the characteristics that determine the value of a colored stone.

Filippo G&G, pietra ametista e di diverso tipo
Filippo G&G, gems of different types

Of course, there is immediately a fairly obvious aspect: in general, the value is determined by how rare a gem is. A ruby, always in principle, has a higher value than a simple citrine quartz. But this is only a starting point. In fact, it is not said that in reality this is the case. Let’s see, instead, what are the criteria that guide the evaluation of a precious or semi-precious stone.

Anelli con pietra di colore by Bulgari
Bulgari gemstone rings

The starting point is that the value of a colored stone depends on several factors, not just one. Hence, the estimated price doesn’t just depend on the weight and volume of a stone. So, as we said, it is not even the type of stone that determines its absolute value. If you have a ring with a sapphire, it is likely to have a value greater than that of a moonstone. Probable, but certainly not. For example, diamonds are also used in industry, since they are the hardest material that exists. And, of course, the diamonds used to cut ceramic tiles are not of the same quality as those found in jewelry. This is to make it clear that the same type of mineral can have very different qualities.

Earrings in gold, diamonds, colored gems

The 4C
As with diamonds, precious colored and semi-precious stones are also valued for the classic 4C: color, clarity, cut (in English cut) and carat weight (which also determines the size). But among these 4C the first is the most important: the color. Of course, let’s talk about colored stones.

Gemme per Liaison de Couleurs
Paul Wild, gems for Liaison de Couleurs

Color
For precious (emerald, ruby and sapphire) or semi-precious (all others) colored stones, the color is assessed with three different criteria: hue (name of color), tone (darkness and brightness) and saturation (vividness) . The relationship between hue, tone and saturation is the most important aspect for evaluating a colored stone. This is why emeralds (or rubies, sapphires, etc.) are not all the same. In general, when a gem has a more saturated color it will also be darker. To obtain a more saturated color, the stones are often subjected to particular processes: for example, they are subjected to intense heat, radiation, or treated with chemicals (not harmful). Natural stones, untreated, have a higher value, obviously with the same appearance and weight.
But if you want to observe what the exact color of your stone is, pay attention to the light source: a light bulb that illuminates with yellow hue, for example, can make your stone appear in a different shade than the natural one.

The duPont Emerald, anello con smeraldo colombiano di 9,11 carati
The duPont Emerald, ring with a 9.11-carat Colombian emerald

Clarity
Usually the stones, some in particular such as emerald, are not as clear as a glass crystal. Clarity measures the degree of internal or surface transparency. Inside the stones there may be inclusions, that is, small imperfections, traces of other minerals that can determine their value. Usually, the fewer inclusions there are, the more the gem has value. But, be careful: if they offer you an absolutely clear emerald, look at it with suspicion. It could be synthetic. In contrast, amethysts are generally free of inclusions. Other stones, on the other hand, are appreciated precisely for their inclusions: for example, the cat’s eye. Or the star sapphire, which has that particular reflection precisely because it has a rather rare inclusion.

Zaffiri e rubino
Blue, pink, yellow and ruby sapphires

Carats (weight)
Size matters. Of course, the color is important, but if the gem is tiny … The weight of the colored stones is indicated in carats. Yes, but what is it equivalent to? Quickly said: a carat is about a fifth of an gram. A gem with higher carats will generally cost more than another smaller, if the quality is equivalent. But the proportion is very different: amethysts are also found in relevant sizes, even over 100 carats and, therefore, the difference between different sizes and weight is relative. Large rubies, on the other hand, are very rare: in proportion, their value with respect to weight will increase more than that of amethyst.

Anello in oro bianco con acquamarina taglio ovale e diamanti
Paolo Costagli, white gold ring with an oval cut aquamarine and diamonds

Cutting
It is not easy for anyone who is not a gemologist to judge whether the cutting of a stone is correct. But you have to know that in evaluating a gem it also matters how it was cut. The light, in fact, will be better reflected and will make a well cut stone brighter. Proportions, symmetry and polishing are the main aspects. On the price of a gem, however, its shape has less influence, if it is one of the classic cuts used, such as brilliant, emerald, shuttles, etc. A good cut can enhance the nuances of a colored gem. An imperfect cut can, on the contrary, depress its beauty. And do not think that the cut is a simple operation performed automatically: each stone is different from the other and a cut that is good for one may not be suitable for a similar one, but not the same.

Anello con rubino birmano a forma di cuscino, di Harry Winston.
Burmese Ruby Cushion Ring by Harry Winston

The country of origin
Last thing to consider: the stone passport matters. There are mines that have a better reputation and average quality than others. And, therefore, in evaluating the stones it is also important to know what the origin is. Burmese rubies are more valuable. The emeralds of Colombia are the most requested, followed by those of Zambia. The now unavailable blue sapphires of Kashmir are the most sought after.

All about titanium jewelery

Do you want to buy a titanium jewel? First, you must read this guide to find out the benefits, price and features of titanium jewelry ♦ ︎

From some years it is increasingly used in high jewelry: titanium is a metal that has so many unique features. But what are the differences with gold and platinum? Is it worth buying a jewel made of titanium? How to Clean and Preserve a Titanium Jewel?

Orecchini in titanio e diamanti
Earrings in titanium and diamonds by Margherita Burgener

Features. Titanium is a lightweight metal with excellent resistance, three times more than steel, but is much lighter. It is silver-like shiny white when it is pure. Another interesting feature is that it does not cause irritation, allergies or discoloration of the skin: if you suffer from irritation when wearing jewelery, titanium can be the right solution. It is no coincidence that it is also well used for piercings. Titanium is used in jewelery because it does not break or bend (unless it is very thin). Another positive aspect: it do not spoils with sea water or chlorine of the pool, as well as water directed.

Orecchini Rosa, in titanio, diamanti, madreperla bianca grigia
Vhernier, Rosa earrings, in titanium, diamonds, gray white mother-of-pearl

In jewelery. Titanium is used in jewelery, but its resistance makes it difficult to process. That’s why titanium jewelry is fairly rare: not all jewelers can blend it (it takes 1723 degrees Celsius, ie 3,135 degrees Fahrenheit, to blend this metal). Only in the late 1990s technology enabled the use of titanium in jewelry, initially, for simple rings and then for more complex pieces.
Titanium is also used to make gold more resistant: in some cases it is enough to add 1% to yellow metal to eliminate the softness of pure gold.
Titanium and colors. Another feature of titanium used in jewelery is that it can be colored. It can, in fact, be anodized to vary the thickness of the surface oxide layer, with a variety of vibrant colors. This process occurs through heating or electric shock: the metal releases its oxides and modifies its color according to the temperature and duration of the process. You can find anodized yellow, pink, red, purple, blue or black titanium.

Braccialetto Vita Savers. Oro bianco, titanio, con 560 diamanti
Life Savers bracelet. White gold, titanium, with 560 diamonds

Curiosity. Titanium was discovered in Cornwall in Great Britain by William Gregor in 1791, but the name was decided by Martin Heinrich Klaproth and refers to the titans of Greek mythology.
For who is recommended. Titanium jewelery can be a good solution for those who want to wear them even when they are caught with some manual activity, from kitchen to childcare, or to DIY. In addition, it is very unlikely that it causes allergies: another point in its favor.

Sabba, orecchini in titanio e diamanti
Sabba, titanium and diamond earrings

The cost. Titanium is not an expensive metal: it is easily found in nature and even though it has a fairly complex workmanship, it does not have a high price. The cost of a jewel in titanium will then be determined by the type of shape, more or less complex, and hence the number of hours it takes to work. Obviously, another fundamental aspect is the value of stones that can be used in jewelery.

How to Clean Titanium. It is simply cleaned with water and, if necessary, a diluted drop of neutral liquid soap. Use a soft toothbrush. Titanium is a tough metal, but cleaning can ruin other materials with which jewel is made, like stones.

Can the jewels be wet?

Can the jewels be wet? Can jewels be damaged? Certainly the sea is a danger for jewels: we talked about it here. But there is not only the sea. There are many occasions, starting with your own bathtub, shower in the morning or simply the kitchen sink, where jewelry can get wet. Here, in fact: can jewels be wet? It depends. The main aspect to consider is the material they are made of. But, in any case, remember that sea salt and chlorine or other disinfectants in swimming pools can always ruin your jewelry.

I gioielli possono rovinarsi a contatto con l'acqua
Jewelry can be damaged by contact with water

Gold. The metal in its natural state does not oxidize because it does not chemically react to oxygen. Therefore, it is not afraid of contact with liquids. But, be careful: gold is often coated with a thin rhodium patina that serves to make it brighter or to change its color (as in the case of blackened gold). In this case, the jewel often immersed in water could lose its brilliance. There is, then, another problem: gold jewelry almost always does not use metal in its natural state, that is, 24 karat. In particular, the gold jewels most at risk are those that contain a greater amount of other alloying metals. For example, 14-karat gold or, even more diluted in the metal alloy, 9-karat gold. Also in this case, contact with water or other liquids can cause the metal to lose its luster.

Anello Wave Stacking in oro 24 carati
Menē, Wave Stacking ring in 24 carat gold

Gold plating. There are cases of gold oxidation when this is a plating on another metal. This phenomenon occurs, for example, when a mercury gilding process is used, which is based on the application of a mercury-gold amalgam on a metal, followed by heating to remove the mercury: thus a layer of gold is obtained porous, which can let liquids penetrate. In this case, a chemical reaction on the metal used as a support can cause an oxidation phenomenon that is reflected on the whole jewel, even on the gold part. In any case, a gold plating is more fragile and tends to wear out over time. In this case, liquids can oxidize the underlying metal: if this happens, the only remedy is to proceed with a new plating. It is better not to expose gold-plated jewelry, by whatever method it was made, to prolonged contact with water.

Bracciale bronzo placcato oro
Gold plated bronze bracelet

Vermeil. Same goes for the plating: vermeil, in fact, is gold-plated silver. It is considered a fairly refined formula, but it is easy to damage the plating, perhaps with small scratches that can put water in contact with the silver.

Anello Round Trip in vermeil
Vermeil Round Trip ring by Charlotte Chesnais

925 silver or sterling silver. It is the purest silver, a rather robust metal, but which can lose its sheen patina on prolonged contact with water, especially in environments such as swimming pools, or with solvents used for cleaning. Occasional contact with clean, unsalted water does not have a negative effect, but the jewel can be damaged if it comes into contact with sunscreen, perfumes or other cleaning substances. On the market there are also jewelry with 075 silver, which contains germanium, which prevents oxidation and can help preserve the metal with its original appearance. It is a little more resistant, but up to a certain point.

Collana in argento della collezione Amatum
Silver necklace from the Amatum by Pianegonda collection

Brass. It is a fairly robust alloy, but it can oxidize on prolonged contact with water. Brass can corrode due to the components of zinc, copper and tin. In this case the metal becomes progressively blackish, green or blue, with an oxidized coating which, however, can be removed.

How to clean and polish the coral

How to clean, store and polish your coral jewelry. Here are some useful tips for those who want a brilliant coral ♦ ︎

Coral jewels are very beautiful and are often worn especially in summer (but not only): a coral necklace is perfect with a light dress and, perhaps, on tanned skin. But how do you clean coral jewelry? And how can you keep rings, necklaces and earrings made with coral? Here are some useful tips for cleaning and storing your coral jewelry.

Collana in corallo e oro indossata
Caterina Murino, coral and gold necklace worn

The coral. Before discovering how to clean and preserve coral, it is good to make a premise. Coral is commonly regarded as a simple material, like a stone. But this is not the case: the coral is made up of thousands of tiny organisms a few identical millimeters large, genetically called polyps (obviously not polyps with tentacles and suckers): their calcium carbonate secretions form the solid structure that develops the branches. coral. In short, it must be understood that coral is unique and also very delicate. Like pearls, for example, coral should be worn often.

Salvatore Collaro, anello in oro bianco, diamanti e corallo rosso
Salvatore Collaro, ring in white gold, diamonds and red coral

Opaque coral. With the passing of time often the coral can become opaque. The brilliance of the newly purchased jewel disappears and remains a reflexless surface. This is because the superficial coral polishing, obtained during the workmanship of the craftsman who made the jewel, has been eliminated from everyday use. To ruin the coral are, in particular, sweat, skin acidity and cosmetic substances. So if you want to wear a coral necklace keep it away from body creams, perfumes and deodorants. Another tip: Avoid keeping the coral in sunlight, too high temperature can ruin it. Better keep the coral jewel in a drawer, indoors.

Methods of cleaning. Coral is a delicate material and should be handled with care. One of the methods to clean the coral is to immerse it in a basin of water, where a few drops of detergent have been dissolved. Some recommend ammonia, but it must be used with caution because it can ruin the jewel. After bathing the coral for about half an hour, you can pass a cloth or use a cotton swab to remove any dirt that has softened with washing.

How to polish the coral. If the coral is very damaged, polishing is the same as that of origin, it is best to turn to an orefice. Another less risky method is to use simple olive oil: pour a few drops on a soft cloth and pass the fabric over the coral. To prevent it from becoming opaque, twice a year you can rub the coral in a cotton cloth, perhaps soaked with liquid wax, not too vigorously. in the case of a necklace, a good habit is also to change the inner thread to the jewel every two or three years.

Jewelery and security at the airport

Wear the jewels. In essence, however, TSA recommends wearing jewels. There are, however, exceptions: if the jewel is bulky it could be inspected. A large ring or necklace with a maxi pendant could hide dangerous substances. In this case, a specific check will be required. Another solution is to remove jewels before checking them and put them in hand luggage: bag, backpack or small suitcase under the x-ray control. Of course, if you are inexpensive jewelry you can easily put them in the trays along with your smartphone and coins.

Piercing. Metal piercing can cause a metal detector alarm. This, in some cases, may suggest operators further control. You may also be asked to remove the piercing from the body, obviously in the closed room. It is, however, a waste of time.

Alarm for the very big earrings

Beware of earrings that are too big

They can cause damage, especially if worn frequently. Here’s what you need to know about maxi earrings.

According to Dana Oliver, Executive Fashion and Beauty Editor, of the online magazine The Huffington Post, giant earrings are dangerous for the wearer. An article in the American edition of the web newspaper published some time ago, reported the opinion of the plastic surgeon Edward Miranda, according to which there are three main risks caused by earrings that are too heavy:

Mild infection that can occur, usually shortly after the initial piercing.
Since earrings worn add weight to the earlobe through a thin strip of skin, the wear and tear from gravity will stretch the earlobe from round to oval. In the long run, the lobe can even break and split in two.
Large earrings, especially hoop earrings, can easily get caught on clothes or be torn off by a child, resulting in laceration of the lobe.

Surgical interventions

“Our earlobes are a very delicate and soft area in our ears, wearing big earrings every day increases the chances of earlobe stretching at an ever increasing rate. This can cause the skin to stretch and the earlobe to crack,” warns Deepak Dugar, a cosmetic surgeon based in Beverly Hills, California. Of course, everything also depends on the weight of the jewel. Some earrings can be very large, but also very light. That’s not always the case, however. In less serious cases, maxi earrings can still cause headaches.

The danger is so real that there are doctors who specialize in lobe reconstruction. An ear lift, to rebuild the lower part damaged by too heavy earrings is common. The procedure includes two options: one for a lobe where the piercing has stretched the lobe, and the second is for thickening ears that have simply gotten thinner with age. The cost of the intervention varies, in the USA, between 1,500 and 3,000 dollars. In any case, the earlobe never goes back to the way it was. So, be careful not to go overboard with ultra heavy earrings.

Dangerous sea for jewelry

Be careful to sea water and swimming pools: ruin your jewelry. Here’s what you must do.
Summer is the time of year when there the most danger for your jewelry. The enemy is called water: that of the sea or the pool. In both cases your jewelry risks a lot. The salt content of sea water is a corrosive substance which can cause serious damage to rings, earrings or necklaces. Even the precious metals, like gold and platinum may be ruined. First, the gold in your jewelry is often an alloy with other metals: for example, what to 18K contains 25% materials such as nickel, or copper or silver. These metals in contact with the sea water is easily to spoil. Even platinum, although more resistant gold, suffers in prolonged contact with salt water.

Vietato fare il bagno con anelli e bracciali, specie se sono bijoux
It is forbidden to swim with rings and bracelets, especially if they are bijoux

Welds danger. One weakness of the jewels are the welds. If a jewel is well done they will not see with your eyes, but there are. The salt can corrode precisely the most delicate parts of the junction between the different parts of a jewel. Another danger is given by the waves or the impact of the jewel caused by swimming. A stroke while swimming due to a collision with the water has a certain relief in a delicate structure such as, for example, a ring. For this are not uncommon in cases of rings in which the jaws which stop the stone will soften and end up leaving free the diamond, or any other gemstone. Even more ruinous is the effect of water of sea on bijoux, that are made with less resistant metals and are usually lighter.

Se per errore si fa il bagno in piscina o in mare con i gioielli, meglio lavarli subito dopo con acqua corrente
If by mistake you bathe in the pool or in the sea with your jewels, it is better to wash them immediately afterwards with running water

Mist up the stones. Another negative effect is that of salt on precious or semi-precious stones. Not only do you risk losing them for ever, but swimming in the sea will make them less bright because of the salt that is deposited on the surface. A bathroom between the waves of the sea is also not recommended for the pearls. The jewels have the same dangers in the swimming pool: it is better to take them off, and then you can take a bath.

Anche l'acqua di una piscina può essere nociva per i gioielli
Even swimming pool water can be harmful to jewelry due to chemicals dissolved in the water

How to fix it. And if you forget to take them off before you dive? The best thing to do is wash the jewels in cold or lukewarm water with a drop or two of mild detergent. After holding them to soak for about ten minutes the jewelry should be cleaned with a toothbrush with very soft bristles. The gems are polished with a cloth.

Vintage jewelry guide

Vintage jewelry are liked more and more, but before choosing them you need to know their characteristics well. Here are the advice of the gemologist of the Catawiki online auction house ♦

What vintage ring choose? She will like it? Or: how to let him know what I like? The first rule is to go on the classic. The second, is to follow the trend. And, in this key, there’s the advice of the of Catawiki, an online auctions company. The auction house, therefore, has seen fit to ask Deborah Mazza, gemologist and herald of Catawiki, a comment: “Over the past decade there has been a significant change compared to what users are looking for when choosing a engagement ring. The trends show a move away from the classic-style rings, like the solitary bought in upscale jewelers, and now you try something that does not fall in the ordinary, why the vintage rings have become very popular and in demand. But this implies having to do a search to select an object and vintage, to avoid that the future remains disappointed bride, you have to consult a gemologist, who can guarantee the quality and the ring came from. Everything else depends on personal taste.”

Adds Louise Baltruschat Hollis, head of the known site for weddings Whimsical Wonderland Weddings: “For some couples, marriage is undoubtedly the most important day of their lives. For this, it’s no wonder that everything is being done to make this day memorable. Today’s brides are opting for something custom, chic festival ceremonies in the woods, and this desire to have something unique also depends on the choice of ring. ”
So here’s a brief guide to the rings in the style of the past.
Victorian. It is a ring for those who love the colors. Very often, in fact, the Victorian ring mount colored gemstones rings including garnets, emeralds and sapphires, why the rings of this time period are the ideal choice when looking for an alternative to the classic solitaire diamond. “Typically, when you opt for colored gemstones, there is a tendency to choose rings with sapphire due to its wear resistance, and it was been Kate Middleton to launch this trend” continues the gemologist. “For those looking for something unusual but colorful and durable, however, I would suggest finding a ruby. Rubies have an incredible strength, second only to diamonds and half the price, so it is no surprise that there has been a sharp increase in demand.”

What to do if your jewelry is stolen from your hotel

What to do if your jewelry is stolen from you in hotel? It is not, unfortunately, such a rare event: a jewelry theft can easily take place if you are not careful. Here’s what to do if your jewelry is stolen in your hotel.

Gioielli in hotel
Gioielli in hotel

The story is always the same: you are on vacation, or go on a business trip and you cannot always wear the same earrings, or ring and necklace. So decide to leave your jewelry in your hotel room. You could be careless and forget them unattended on a coffee table. Or, hoping to have no surprises, you have hidden the jewels in a suitcase pocket. But unfortunately on your return to the hotel you discover that your jewels are gone.

Nella stanza di hotel
Nella stanza di hotel

Before finding out how you have to deal with this situation it is good to make a premise: never leave the jewels, especially if they are valuable, unattended in a hotel room. The best thing to do is to lock them in the hotel safe, which can be in your own room, or in the reception. It is not only common sense, but also practical advice. Let’s see why.

Parlare con la direzione dell'hotel
Parlare con la direzione dell’hotel

The first thing to do if you are stolen is to communicate the fact to the hotel management. Go immediately to the police and file a complaint, even if someone advises you not to. Also ask the hotel management to do everything possible to recover your jewelry. In case the culprit or the culprit is a person working on the cleaning of the rooms there is some (rare) possibility of returning the jewelry.

Usare lo smartphone
Usare lo smartphone

The second useful tip is to record evidence of the existence of your jewels: photograph them with your smartphone, perhaps even when you store them somewhere in the hotel. Often (that is always), in fact, hotels ask for proof: did you really have jewels in your room or are you inventing it now? And it’s hard to prove that you really had them, right? And even more difficult is to convince someone that you haven’t lost them.

Reception in hotel

If, however, the objects have been stolen from the safe, the hotel’s responsibility comes into play. But, in this case, negligence in management must be demonstrated: for example due to safes that can be easily opened or left unattended. In this case, the hotel may be forced to pay compensation. But here comes the bad news: it depends where you are. Legislation is different from one country to another.

Hotel room

In Italy, for example, a ruling established that those who suffer theft in a hotel, if demonstrated, are entitled to be compensated with a sum that can go up to a maximum of 100 times the cost of the hotel room. And this also applies if you leave a piece of jewelry unattended on a bedside table. In the US, however, reimbursement varies from one state to another and, on average, provides for compensation between 300 and 500 dollars. If your jewel is worth more, no way.

A useful tip, according to experts, is to take out an insurance policy before departure, which also includes coverage from theft. But, in this case, be careful before buying the insurance: check how much the refund is in case of theft: the expected figures are often very low.

If the ring is rainbow

Jewelers offering marriage rings for people of the same sex are on the rise. And men prefer rings made in … ♦

Do you remember Tiffany’s same sex ring campaign ? It’s been all over the newspapers, often with appreciative headlines and even with a hint of cynicism: a step forward for marriage rights or a step forward for sales? In fact, the advertisment has not only expanded this market segment, but actually has identified a new trend: the engagement ring from man to man or woman to woman. Of course, this is a niche, but is growing: for example, legalising gay marriage, in England, Scotland and Wales in 2014, has increased the demand for wedding bands.

And, in fact, if once sales are focused on informal rings as a symbol of a private commitment, now there is a shift to something more institutional, a choice more considered and custom made. Men are looking for something less flashy, but not necessarily less precious: diamonds, pink gold palladium and titanium are at the top of the charts. Customization is the key to win the English customers, who are also interested in the finish, which is polished, matt or brushed finish is not important, but they want to contribute to the design ring. Which brings greater creativity, although jewelers facing so much talent always give the same advice: because it’s supposed to last several years the band should follow personal taste rather than the latest trend.

La firma del registro
The signature on the marriage register

In a female marriage, for now, a trend closer to faith seems to prevail, to the classic wedding ring, a gold circle that symbolizes the union between two people. Even with small variations, for example, with a small diamond set inside the metal band. But, essentially, women seem to prefer more sobriety. It is also an aesthetic question: men have on average larger hands and, therefore, even the rings are larger and are more visible.

Although same-sex marriages are now permitted in a large number of countries, it does not seem that a common formula has been codified regarding the jewels to wear, starting with rings. At the moment, in short, a simple transposition of the characteristics for wedding rings used by heterosexual couples prevails. It’s the tradition. But it is said that in the near future the rings may take on a different appearance: it is a universe that is still unexplored.
