Jewels and watches, Thom Trade Italy becomes Timeway Italy

One of the major jewelery and watch distribution companies reorganizes itself and changes its name. Thom Trade Italy becomes Timeway Italy, a brand that since 2019 distinguishes the wholesale division of the international Thom Group, a leading retailer in the watch and jewelery sector defined as affordable luxury. In 2022, the Thom Group generated a total consolidated turnover (Italy, France, Benelux and Germany) of over 900 million euros, with a 32% growth in Ebitda (gross margin). The Group has 5,000 collaborators internationally, owns a thousand direct points of sale through seven retail banners and over 3,000 wholesale outlets, as well as four e-commerce sites. According to the company, the change of company name responds to the need to identify the company’s business more immediately and thus act on the market with an identity of greater strategic impact.

After the first years of activity we thought a lot about the opportunity to act on the market with a different name. This apparently simple choice brings with it the advantage of better identifying the object of our activity, i.e. the trade of watches and jewels. It is a simple and international name. We operate in a very competitive environment and taking care of every aspect is essential for success. We operate in a decidedly interesting market where fashion brands often choose to complete their offer by creating watch and jewelery collections. Entering these segments undoubtedly represents a business opportunity for them, but also a communication and brand awareness development opportunity. Our role as distributors is placed at the end of the supply chain which begins with the fashion house, continues through the licensee company and then arrives at the stage of distributing the products on the market through us. In our role, we provide brands with knowledge of the market and consumer tastes and guarantee the protection of brand equity.

Mediterranean feel with Stenzhorn’s Amalfi collection

Amalfi, a small Italian city overlooking the sea of the Gulf of Salerno, surrounded by spectacular cliffs. In the 1920s and 1930s, Amalfi was a popular tourist destination for the British upper class and aristocracy. But it has retained its charm, in Italy and abroad, as suggested by the Amalfi collection signed by the German high-end jewelery house Stenzhorn. Landscapes, flavours, suggestions of the ancient maritime republic (between about 839 and 1200) were the source of inspiration for the collection.

The collection consists of necklaces, rings and earrings. All Stenzhorn jewels are made from precious rubies, sapphires and emeralds to sparkling diamonds. The shapes are sinuous and elongated, with a geometry that recalls marquise-cut diamonds, as if they were eyes. But also like the leaves of the lemon trees, which are found in Amalfi. The diamonds set, however, are brilliant cut.

We invite you to take a journey with us along the winding coastal roads of the Amalfi Coast and discover the hidden azure bays and colorful villages. With Amalfi, clients can feel the beauty of nature, the harmony, lightness and inner peace that this region reflects.

Jewels and watches at the Oscars

The red carpet of the Oscars, which this year was champagne-colored, that is yellow, gave as always a parade of big and small actresses with their jewels. It is worth mentioning a counter-current choice, that of the model Ashley Graham, who attended the 95th Academy Awards with Pandora Timeless and Pandora Diamonds jewels. In short, not a high jewelery maison, but a very popular brand, and moreover with synthetic diamonds.

But it was an unusual choice. Most of the participants opted for fine jewellery. The Parisian Maison Messika has enlisted a small army of actresses for its jewels: Danai Gurira, in a purple dress, with the Little Mermaid High Jewelery earrings and the Toi & Moi pear-shaped diamond ring, Camila Mendes in a vintage Versace dress, with Concorde ring and Roaring diamonds, Poorna Jagannathan with My Twin rings, the Move Uno multi-bracelet and the My Twin trio earrings. British actress Jodie Turner Smith also wears Messika jewels, with the Messika ring by Kate Moss High Jewelry Spirited Wind and Kris Jenner with a super Roaring Diamonds necklace and Little Mermaid earrings.

Yeprem diamonds, on the other hand, were Jurnee Smollett’s choice at the Vanity Fair party, with earrings by the Lebanese Maison. As well as Jenna Dewan, with diamond earrings and Natalia Bryant at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Tiffany jewels, however, for Lady Gaga, Florence Pug, Michelle Williams. From the Italian Maison Pasquale Bruni, the jewels of the actress and singer Dove Cameron at the Elton John Aids’s Foundation Academy Award Party: Choker from the Daughter of Flowers Collection in white gold and diamonds.

But there was also room for men, often associated with fine watches. This is the case, for example, of Jon Kortajarena with Hublot’s Orlinski Titanium White Pavé 40MM watch, as well as Zachary Levi, who opted for the 40mm Classic Fusion Orlinski King Gold timepiece also from Hublot.

Women’s Day in color for Marco Bicego

Women’s Day, but also a festival of colors. Because the day dedicated to the other half of the sky is a day to celebrate, as well as to be used to reaffirm gender equality (and diversity). It’s not strange, therefore, to associate jewelry and women’s day, perhaps as an opportunity to give a gift to one’s other half. Or, why not? to give yourself a gift, without waiting for anyone. An atmosphere of celebrations that the Venetian brand Marco Bicego links to two particularly joyful historic collections, Jaipur and Paradise.

Bracciale della collezione Paradise
Bracciale della collezione Paradise

The first, Jaipur, takes its name from the city of Rajasthan, India, which is the capital of gems, with a centuries-old tradition in stone processing. Paradise also uses colored gems, together with small cylindrical elements in gold in the classic manual workmanship of the Maison’s craftsmen. Many stones are used, such as aquamarine, peridot, rubellite, amethyst, citrine, tourmaline. A rainbow that makes the March 8 celebration even more welcome.

The coincidences of Maria Marchegiani

The jewellery by Maria Marchegiani: works that bloom in the small town of Jesi.
There are jewels that are not born in Paris, and even in Milan, Vicenza and Valenza. There are jewels that, however, are born in a city of Italy, which isn’t famous for its boutiques. Yet in Jesi, a small town in the Marche region, works with appropriate conviction the creator and designer Maria Marchegiani. Coincidentally, as for other designers, she has an artistic background: he started with build sets for the theater, paint, restore old paintings, ironwork, ceramics. In her story, among other things, has a diploma at school of the sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro with Iris Project, a jewel-anthropological and contemporary sculpture.

She turns herself, then, to goldsmith’s art: began his career in 2004 when he opened a studio of design and laboratory Goldsmith Art Marchegiani in the historic Via degli Orefici that another coincidence, it is the place where he worked Lucagnolo, a student of Welcome Cellini. With this patron saint in the area, Maria Marchegiani uses silver, gold, precious and semi-precious gems, with metal alloys that are created entirely within the laboratory, also with special colors. The inspirational motifs are the most diverse: from the natural and the man. Are more than abstract ideas real models. But also she can make also custom jewelry.

Antonella Ferrara’s unique pieces

Gold, silver, natural stones and pearls, with the ambition of becoming wearable sculptures. They are the result of the work of Antonella Ferrara, who has a long (35 years) activity behind her. After studying goldsmith sculpture in Milan, Antonella Ferrara creates jewels in her studio-laboratory. At the center of her creative universe is the creation of micro-sculptures using gems and opals. They are all unique pieces with decorative, figurative elements that evoke modern symbols and historical references and constitute a thematic segment of her production, linked to her artistic experience.

Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings and brooches are inspired by wide-ranging themes, such as the Galaxia collection, or Treasures of the Sea, Ancestralia, but also the Wonders of the Earth. An example of the sources of inspiration is the mother-of-pearl medallion with a fantasy figure and inspired by the mythological element of the Greek divinity Aschepio, Aesculapius in Latin, symbol of health sciences and wisdom.

The jewelry by Mousson

The new creations by Mousson, great Russian Maison of high jewelery. With opalescence and gold that looks like fabric ♦

St. Petersburg, a city founded by Peter the Great, was for a long time the capital of Russia and the seat of the court of the tsars. It is probably no coincidence that it now also hosts one of the Russian jewelery and high jewelery Maison: Mousson, which now also has offices in Moscow and Bangkok. Founded in 2008 by a group of professionals who have been active in the goldsmith and jewelery sector for 20 years, Mousson has quickly become a well-known brand, although so far not well known outside the borders of Russia. And breaking through was not an easy feat in a market that has always been dominated by the great Italian and French jewelers. But, perhaps, it was inevitable that local creativity was channeled into a commercial enterprise capable of producing high quality jewelry.

Orecchini con diamanti e zaffiri
Orecchini con diamanti e zaffiri

Of course, the aesthetics of the collections are compatible with that, at times a little strong, of Russian taste. But looking at the pieces of jewelry proposed by Mousson we understand that it is a demanding production, with rings that make a great use of pavé diamonds, with large stones in the center of very intense colors. Strong stuff, in short, to warm the cold winds of the North. Each piece is unique and has its own style.

Two centuries of jewels with Gianni Carità

There are only a few years left, now to cross the finish line of two centuries of history: there are few jewelery companies that can boast roots as long as those of Gianni Carità, which is almost an institution in Naples. But not only in the Italian city: rings and earrings of the high jewelery brand are sold all over the world, from the United States to Japan. A story that began in 1834, when the progenitor Vincenzo Carità opened his first workshop, accrediting himself as a jeweler at the court of the Bourbons, the Spanish noble dynasty that then reigned over southern Italy.

Worn by nobles and empresses such as Queen Maria Theresa of Austria, the jewels of the Carità family gained recognition thanks to the quality of the workmanship and the choice of the most precious materials. Over the centuries, a Vincenzo Carità and a Giovanni Carità have always followed one another at the helm of the Maison. Now it is Gianni Carità who has been leading the family business since the second half of the seventies, who makes his jewels in the nearby goldsmith center Tarì di Marcianise. However, the classic style and quality have remained the same as ever.

Damiani in Madrid with El Corte Inglés

Damiani’s expansion continues in the heart of Castilla. The Italian jewelery brand has opened a new store in the El Corte Inglés department store, the most famous chain in the Iberian country, in the elegant Castellana district of Madrid. The Damiani store marks a stage in the strategy of the Valencian Maison, which aims to grow thanks to a plan of targeted openings within the spaces of the most important retailers in the country, such as Durán.

The new Damiani store is located in the luxury jewellery-watch area of the Castellana store, the number one in Spain, alongside the most important players in the sector. For some time Damiani has undertaken an investment strategy in the development of distribution, as evidenced by the many new openings around the world.

The diamond jewels worn by Rihanna

Rihanna’s return to the stage in a live performance after six years, on the occasion of Super Bowl LVII, was widely commented, starting from her surprise at her pregnancy. For the 13-minute show, the singer wore three pieces designed to measure by Jonathan Anderson, creative director of the Spanish brand Loewe. The red sneakers are the result of Maison Margiela’s collaboration with sports shoe brand Salomon.

Maxi down jacket with integrated gloves is instead by Alaïa, the brand founded by the late Tunisian couturier Azzedine Alaïa. However, the song sung at the end, Diamonds, was the most apt: the Barbadian singer showed up with a series of diamond-based jewels by the Parisian maison Messika. On stage in Arizona, in front of about 190 million spectators, Rihanna chose some of Messika’s high jewelry earrings: a single Illusionnistes mono earring broken into three parts, Equilibristes clips, another Magnetic Love mono earring, jewels from the Diamond Equalizer collection , diamond clip from the Illusionistes line. The right choice for a brilliant performance.

The Lito variants

Geometry and nature, between past and future, here are the jewels of Greek Lito ♦

The full name, for those who speak the Greek language, looks like a tongue twister: Lito Karakostanoglou. This is why the designer has called his creation just as simply Lito. In Athens, where she was born, in 1999 he opened a bridge to the world, with a design that navigates through simple, geometric shapes, but also with lines that take in loan naturalistic forms, like the one that offers an endless variation of eyes, of ‘hive beetle, Peacock. In short, a way to bring the future to the past, for example, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, through design.

Before founding his brand, Lito studied at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris and technical drawing at the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de La Bijouterie, Joaillerie et Orfèvrerie, to which is added an MBA in Boston. Her unique pieces have become collectibles and have been used for fashion shows from Kenzo and Jean Paul Gaultier couture and ready-to-wear collections.

Marco Dal Maso for women

Fascinated by travel and distant, tribal, authentic cultures. But also from the world of jewellery, which runs through the veins of the family: Marco Dal Maso learned the art of creating rings, bracelets and necklaces from his father, in the Dml, a Vicenza-based company that produces for third parties. But rather than just following in his father’s footsteps, the designer created a brand with his own name, after a stay in New Zealand, where he got to know the ancient Maori traditions. Back in Italy, Marco Dal Maso has focused on men’s jewelry, which is on the rise and quite underestimated by most of the manufacturers in the sector.

But not only. He has decided to expand his production also to women’s jewelry, without however losing the decisive style and the handcrafted aspect of his creations and some references to myths and dreams. This is how collections such as Orion, Amaia, Versa were born, which reinterpret traditional women’s jewelery with the design of the Venetian designer: 18-karat gold, also in the black version, with the use of white or black diamonds and precious stones, such as sapphires or emeralds. But also oxidized silver with gold and vermeil details.

Shells and diamonds, the Aron & Hirsch formula

From Brazil to the tribes living along the Omo Valley, southern Ethiopia: the bond that brought Aron & Hirsch to Africa is unusual, where she found inspiration for their jewelry worn by women who live that remote region. The Brazilian brand, based in Sao Paulo and Rio De Janeiro, has developed jewels that focus on the contrast of precious stones, such as emeralds, diamonds, topazes, coral, turquoise, peridot, jade, and shells. In short, a contamination between luxury and ethnic traditions.

The Maison, founded in 2011 by friends Taísa Hirsch and Sandra Aron, focuses on wearable but also original jewels. Passionate about stones, Taísa and Sandra have decided to unleash irreverence and creativity, together with the care for the quality of the jewels. Taísa deals with stones, thanks to training at the Gia (Gemological Institute of America), while Sandra has put her experience in the business to good use. The combination has convinced a good number of celebrities, such as Kate Moss.

Gigi Ferranti, jewels-architecture in Brooklyn

The classical architectural lines merged in the jewelery of Gigi Ferranti ♦ ︎

The name is Gigi Ferranti, but her name is Gina. No gender confusion: Gina Ferranti is the designer who founded the Gigi Ferranti brand, in Brooklyn, New York. The designer has Italian origins, but is now perfectly American, even if she does not forget her childhood. She started working in the fashion industry, but then graduated in gemology and worked for David Yurman, precisely in the selection of quality control of stones. An activity that has served a lot for its jeweler activity, which began in 2015.

Gina defines herself as a Renaissance woman, because she has many passions and many skills.

For example, she is an expert in architecture, and in her jewelry she transfers some of the geometric lines typical of the structure of the buildings, in particular the classical ones, with pediments and columns. She loves the classic style, whether it is the ancient Greece or the architecture of Palladio. Needless to say, he loves symmetry and care of proportions. Another aspect that loves is the ability to stack the jewels. The rings with the zigzag profile are an example.

India in London with Pomegranate

The charm of India is contagious: one of the jewelery designers fascinated by the culture and traditions of the great Asian country is the Londoner Katie Bulatovic, who has been working in the jewelery sector for over 20 years, after an experience in the Harvey Nichols department store, and trained as a gemologist Al Gia and founded Pomegranate, considered a magical fruit and the closest thing to a gem mine. Her boutique is located in the heart of London, in Kensington Square. But the heart is fixed in Jaipur, the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan, which is also a famous district for the production of jewelry and gem cutting. And where the jewels of Pomegranate are made. But before opening her own boutique in 2009, Katie sold her first jewels among the stalls of Portobello, Covent Garden Market and at fairs and events. Since then she has come a long way.

They are jewels made with sterling silver, also plated, or 18-karat gold. Jaipur also offers the opportunity to choose from a wide range of precious stones, such as diamonds with the traditional polki cut, and semi-precious. Gemology skills allow Katie to use microscopes, refractometers and spectroscopes to identify and assess gem quality. The love for India is also reflected in the style of jewels: the first created by the designer was a Navaratna pendant, a word that indicates nine stones that represent the planets in Vedic astrology.

Les Boundless Souls by Leonori

Leonori Gioielli was founded in Forlì by Agostino Leonori in 1962 and today it is managed by the third generation of the family. Sixty years later, the Romagna brand is still a stimulating exception: it manages to combine the classic Italian jewelry tradition with an innovative design that is difficult to identify outside the large goldsmith districts, or the large Maisons that dominate the sector. One proof is the new Anime collection. From the company they explain that the collection “is inspired by the souls encountered along our travels” and also for this reason represented by the white enamel that alternates with the black one.

Anelli della collezione Anime indossati
Anelli della collezione Anime indossati

But not only. Because the design also incorporates the geometry of the company’s historical and representative logo, it is revised in a modern key: it is a quadrilobe composed of four semicircles arranged in the shape of a cross, which form a stylized four-leaf clover. The iconic collection is made up of an architecture of 15 different models. The Leonori symbol is thus transformed into jewels in pink gold, enamel and diamonds.
Orecchini in oro rosa, smalto e diamanti
Orecchini in oro rosa, smalto e diamanti

For the Anime collection I was inspired by my passion for Arab peoples and influenced by my Italian heritage. Starting from this base I made the first piece of the Anime collection. For the first time we have used enamel as a distinctive manufacturing element, I am convinced that color is useful for giving life to the jewel, in this case we started with the two colors black and white, this choice could be considered a tribute to elegance of Arab women and their beautiful dresses. The motifs that characterize the Arab countries are often made up of geometric designs on combinations of repeating squares and circles, which can be overlapped and intertwined. This type of artistic expression uses the leaf or flower as a starting point, which are deprived of their natural form to be transformed into something different. I did exactly this, I took inspiration from the art around me and designed my first Anime jewelry.

The exclamation point of Spreng

From Germany, the super flashy jewelry of Georg Spreng ♦

Have you ever walked with a leopard on a leash? A bit flashy, right? (And the leopard would create some anxiety in those who wear walking the dog). In any case, it is the example that the German designer Georg Spreng does to describe her jewelry: attract attention, showy, colorful, bright, and shout: look at me, I’m here. If you take a look at the designer portrait also you understand what is his concept of luxury. You must see his jewel even by those who fly on a plane.

It is easy to say that he get: if you love the jewel that illuminates the night like a beacon, there he is. Spreng was born in 1949 in Schwabisch Gmund, he studied industrial design, started the profession as a freelance designer in the design group frogdesign 1971-1982. He then decided to focus on jewelry. He has won numerous awards for design and decoration, it has works on display at the Museum of Applied Arts in Monaco and the Museum of Modern Art, NY.

Jewelry stores still beat online shopping

Buying jewelry online is no longer an exception. Yet buying in a traditional shop is still the preferred choice of the vast majority of people, at least in many countries, including Italy. A photograph of the trends and habits of those who buy jewelery comes from a survey by the Federpreziosi Observatory (association of distribution companies) on a representative sample of Italian consumers with 700 interviews with people over the age of 24.

Even if online jewelry shopping is not widespread in Italy, the number of shops that sell precious items is decreasing. There are 13,296 companies in the retail trade of watches, jewelery and silverware, but from 2013 to 2021 they closed around 4,000 jewelery shops. The sales of all these companies are estimated at almost 5 billion euros, of which over 40% are concentrated in the North West regions. Turnover is growing compared to 2020 but has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels. 33,890 people work in jewelers in Italy. Large companies are 0.1% of Italian jewelers and invoice 21.3% of the total.

Habits
In Italy, and not only there, on the occasion of anniversaries the choice often falls on the purchase of jewels and valuables. The main reasons for buying a jewel are the awareness of the desire of the person to whom one intends to give it (53.8%) and the pleasure of wearing jewels (42.9%). Interestingly, 94.7% of those who have not avoided buying a jewel have done so mainly due to the excessive cost of jewels (50.4%), but also because they consider the jewel a personal product and therefore difficult to give away (20.4%). The purchases of valuables and jewels are concentrated for men aged between 45 and 54, often residing in large cities. 13.4% of those interviewed bought a jewel for themselves.

Offline
91.8% of Italian consumers buy in a physical store and only 8.2% online. 60.5% of those who bought a jewel had a precise idea before going to the shop, while almost 40% knew they wanted to buy a jewel, but did not have a precise idea of what to buy and sought advice from the jeweler. The jeweler’s experience was used for 45% of the jewels sold, in compensation in about 55% of the cases the advice of friends and acquaintances, product advertising in newspapers and TV and communication on the web played a role. Sponsored contents on the web (66.4%) are among the reasons that determined the choice of the jewel.

How to wear jewels, the new rules of etiquette

How many jewels to wear? Does the watch go well with an evening dress? And the rose gold … Six rules to break, but be careful ♦ ︎

Don’t wear a watch in the evening. Diamonds are only allowed after 6pm. Rose gold is of poor quality … These are some of the rules that have been respected by generations of women for many years. Those, at least, of a certain social class. Even today there are those who follow these unwritten precepts. But do they still make sense? Here are six rules that are all or in part outdated and which, therefore, you can safely break. But, be careful: as long as you don’t bury the aesthetic sense.

Rule number 1
Rose gold is not of bad quality

At the beginning of the 19th century, rose gold was very popular in Russia and for this reason it was also known as Russian gold. Pink gold is obtained by adding copper to pure yellow gold. Of course too much copper makes the alloy less valuable (because it contains less yellow gold), but it also gives it a too bright hue. Today, however, this is no longer the case. Rose gold is back in fashion and jewelers carefully dose the amount of copper in order not to obtain an excessively charged color. Therefore, it is better to choose jewelry made with a metal that is not too redish.

Rule number 2
Pearls are worn even before the age of 40

The classic string of pearls around the neck has been the jewel worn by mature women for decades, especially when paired with classic dresses: a cashmere sweater or blouse under a full dress. These have been the uniforms of entire generations. Today, however, pearls are also used by many jewelers in a very creative way, both for very expensive and affordable jewels. And today a pearl necklace can also be worn very well on jeans. So, wear pearls even if you are under 30.

Rule number 3
When to wear diamonds before 6pm

Know that, according to some, this rule is still in effect. But only a few are required to respect it, for example members of the British royal family. Yes, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle (who probably does not think about it after their farewell in London) cannot wear diamond jewelry before evening, that is by convention before 6pm. With one exception, however: rings are allowed. engagement or diamond jewelry in some particular ceremonies. What about the rest of the world? He certainly doesn’t pay attention to rules like these. Apart from engagement rings, which are always allowed, earrings, necklaces and bracelets can be worn. But only as long as the context is adequate: on the occasion of important shows, elegant parties, ceremonies. In short, diamonds yes, but not to go to the office or go shopping: in this case they are really excessive.

Rule number 4
When to wear the watch in the evening

Once leaving the house in the evening meant a special occasion. The watch was worn by her husband or boyfriend, so it was not necessary for a woman to wear it. Fortunately, this is no longer the case. But the watch should be considered, however, as an accessory to coordinate with the rest of the dress. A sporty brown leather strap does not go well with an elegant black evening dress. Better, if anything, a watch with a white or yellow gold mesh strap with a small case. In short, in the era of smartphones, the watch has increasingly an ornamental function: no one leaves their mobile phone at home, while a timepiece can be done without. So if you want to wear it in the evening, consider it as a jewel to coordinate with the occasion.

Rule number 5
How to mix gold and silver

This rule is definitely out of date. There are even jewelers who offer earrings, rings or bracelets made simultaneously in gold and silver. Rather, it is the quality of the jewel that counts. Silver that is passed off as white gold is certainly not a great idea. A design jewel that uses both gold and silver together can be very precious. And different jewels? Also in this case what matters is the combination, the mix of styles that must be pleasant and homogeneous.

Rule number 6
How to wear more than five jewels together

Be careful: turning into a Christmas tree is not advisable even today. But it can be fun to wear lots of different bracelets, or to stack thin rings. This way you can easily cross the roof of five jewels together, but that’s fine. The real problem, if anything, is choosing the right jewelry. Increasing the number is no guarantee of a pleasant effect. For this reason, some jewelers offer jewels that are specially designed to be combined.

But also very sensitive and delicate. Those who believe in Chinese and perhaps even Western astrology can find dozens of definitions and characteristics for those who are destined to carry the beliefs of others with them throughout their lives. But the fact is that the astrological sign, whether Western or Chinese, has also been a source of inspiration for jewelers for thousands of years. Also for the year of the rabbit, therefore, there is no shortage of jewels with the appearance of the rodent.
