GemGèneve Designer Vivarium is back

After announcing the return (after the pandemic break year), GemGèneve outlines the contours of the third edition (4-7 November). In particular, the organizers of the Geneva event presented the new exhibitors at the Designer Vivarium, a space reserved for the creators of fine jewelry, small boutiques often made up of a single jeweler. The Vivarium Designer is curated by Vivienne Becker with the contribution of Ida Faerber, one of the leading experts in the world of jewelery, and includes a range of extraordinarily original and innovative contemporary jewelery. A space that, in a certain sense, is an alternative to that of the rest of the exhibitors, focused on precious stones, high-end proposals from exclusive Maison and vintage jewelery.

I look for jewels that have a strong, individual point of view, a well-defined identity and a creative vision, and for a certain artisan refinement. I am looking for a sophisticated integration of concept, material and technique and perhaps above all I am looking for designers who have something to say, something new to say, through their jewels. I am looking for the creators of today who will be part of the long and rich continuum of the history of jewelry.

Vivarium, on the other hand, offers avant-garde jewelry: an idea originally born by the founders of GemGenève, Thomas Faerber and Ronny Totah, perhaps to infuse a breath of freshness that balances a very traditional event. The new Lovely collection of the I Classici line consists of pendants with enameled shapes and rings with ecological colored stones. The jewels are made in full leBebé style, with pendants representing the iconic baby and girl silhouettes, hand-decorated and glazed with the champlevé technique, enriched with a natural stone in chromatic harmony with the subject. For example, with Bee Brave, a design that represents a small bee that lands on 9-karat yellow gold, together with a citrine quartz. The figure That’s Amore on 9-karat white gold, on the other hand, draws a heart with an arrow, a symbol of love, while Be my Lucky (Bug) represents the silhouette of a lucky ladybug, made of enamel and with black spinel. For Gi by Giselle Effting, the thread of existence, rather, adapts to circumstances, to the surface of things that happen, surrounds them to move forward. The result is titanium jewelry, a light material, but very resistant, hypoallergenic, which does not corrode or scratch. Titanium has the ability to change color, due to the orbital changes of the crystal and electrons through the use of the hot oxidation of an anodizing process. The metal is dotted with small diamonds set, which make the jewel bright.

The style is completely original: the jewels are not ordinary earrings, they are not simple necklaces and they are not traditional rings. Instead, they follow new and surprising paths, they surround the ears or even the nape of the neck, collect the hair, or slip between the fingers to reach the wrist.

From the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, to the hills surrounding Florence: the Giselle Effting path was as long and sinuous as her jewels. Ortaea is a brand founded in London that combines the Latin word Ortus which means origin, new beginnings and ancestry, and the name Gea, the goddess of the Earth and of Creation in Greek mythology. The idea is by Mita Vohra, who launched the jewelry brand in 2016. One of the latest collections is called Jardin and presents jewels with shapes inspired by flowers and plants.

The founder of Ortaea is the director of Sarova Hotels Kenya, and she sits on the boards of various property development companies and is a Trustee of the Sandy Vohra Foundation. Yoga and the art of designing jewelry. This could be the title of a story about Ark Fine Jewelry, a brand founded in 2017 by Ann Korman. The designer, in fact, is a passionate yoga practitioner. Not only her: she also teaches meditation, jyotish (Vedic astrology), gemology, the science of light, Kabbalah and nutrition. Oh yeah, and she also designs jewelry. Now, for example, she presents Dreamscapes, a collection of symbols inspired by mandalas and yantra (mystical diagram). Ann Korman’s enlightenment apparently occurred while she was attending a training course in Rishikesh, India: a guru offered to teach her the traditional Vedic understanding of precious stones and the meanings of ancient Tantric symbols.

It goes without saying that Ann Korman’s jewelry is designed to have beneficial effects on the wearer. It would be interesting to know if, then, this aspiration is respected. In any case, even without magical influences, the jewels have a pleasant appearance. They are made of 18 carat gold with diamonds and multicolored sapphires, and the geometries dear to the Indian tradition are, in any case, pleasant to see, even without the need for meditation.

After graduating from Cornell, Ann Korman earned her Masters in Fine Art and spent her career exhibiting in New York galleries and briefly working as a fashion editor for Vogue magazine before moving to Los Angeles to undertake, she says, a journey to enlightenment, celebration and transcendence.

Why are your jewelry get black? Why do earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets oxidize? In this article we explain from a scientific point of view what happens to your jewels when they oxidize. If, on the other hand, you want to know how to eliminate oxide from your jewels, read here.

Some jewels, particularly those of silver, tend to oxidize and become black or with shades tending to green. It is the effect of oxidation. In some cases, jewelers take advantage of this change in metal and offer jewelery with partially blackened surfaces. But in this case it is an aesthetic choice. The problem, however, is when oxidation is not desired. Let’s consider this aspect from a scientific point of view to understand how oxidation occurs.

A metal oxidizes occurs when a chemical reaction occurs on its surface. Oxidation occurs because the electrons that make up the atoms of some metals (not all of them, we’ll talk about it later) move from the metal to the oxygen molecules. In essence, they divorce their spouse (the rest of the atom, that is, the central nucleus and the other electrons) and become engaged to another: oxygen. It is a process that in chemistry is called ionization. When they escape from the metal, the electrons that have divorced from their original nucleus to join the oxygen, create the oxidized surface. Basically, they are family breakers.

Why does oxidation occur?
That’s the best part. You can’t blame all the fugitive electrons. In families, the faults are not (almost) all of a single partner. In this case, the chemical process that leads to oxidation can be caused simply by contact with the air, and therefore with the oxygen it contains. Or oxidation can be caused by the metal exposed to water (even water contains oxygen) or to acidic substances that corrode it, for example, cosmetic creams or skin sweat. In short, oxidation occurs because the electrons of the metal are seduced by the irresistible call of oxygen: a true chemical betrayal.

Fortunately, not all jewelry oxidizes. As all women know, if they give you a gift or if you buy a gold jewel, you can rest assured: it will not blacken (except in rare cases, when it is alloyed with metals that oxidize). In addition to gold, there are metals that are not by chance called noble, which do not blacken, such as platinum, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium. Other metals, which however are not classified as noble, resist oxidation and are used in jewelry, such as titanium and aluminum. Finally, there are also metals invented by man, that is alloys of different materials, which are not sensitive to oxygen, such as stainless steel and brass.

There are two things that make a woman happy: jewels and chocolate. Instead, there is only one woman who has decided to combine the two elements: Doris Hangartner. She has a very varied curriculum behind her: after graduating in Gemology at the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica (California), she worked for jewelry companies, in particular as a gemologist, but also dealt with antiques and vintage jewelry.

How she came up with the idea of combining chocolate and jewelry is not known. But the marriage is part of a broader philosophy of the brand, which is based in Zurich, Switzerland (not surprisingly the homeland of chocolate). Doris Hangartner’s goal, in fact, is to identify a person’s personality in order to find affinity with a gem. In short, a jewelry that involves the five senses. For example, peridot inspires smooth flavor of matcha (finely ground powder of green tea leaves, with the same color as the bud) combined with notes of jasmine and cedar surround the toasted almond in a special praline. Or a shocking but delicious splash of vodka, absinthe, peppermint and lime are the components of another praline, filled with liquid alcohol and dedicated to Paraiba tourmaline, the house specialty. Gem chocolates are handmade by a traditional Maison in Zurich (they are excellent, we can assure you). In short, each chocolate represents a gem: the imperial topaz (chocolate, honey, incense, orange and elderflower), red spinel (nougat, hot pepper and szechuan pepper, star anise, sesame and fleur de sel).

But, perhaps to prevent someone from eating a peridot or sniffing a garnet, you decided to evolve the idea. For example, combining essences and scented candles with jewels, to satisfy the olfactory buds. Without forgetting hearing, with Gem Dance, Let’s Tango, a ballet inspired by red spinel and tango music, created with internationally renowned dancers and choreographers such as Oleksandr and Sergiy Kirichenko and the Stradivari Quartett. Ah, yes, there are also jewels: after this premise, it is easy to understand that stones have a prominent role. They are lively, strong stones with personality.
