Diamonds are called Bloch

Little is known about the Bloch family of Antwerp. Yet from half century Bloch was one of the most popular jewelers in Belgium, but with a wide range of export market too. It is no coincidence that Antwerp is the European capital of diamonds and the Bloch family with diamonds has been uncomfortable for many decades. The company is led by the chief executive officer, Leslie Bloch, while managing director is Mickey Bloch. In short, everything in the family in an atmosphere of total discretion. And the headquarters, in Vestingstraat 59, in the city’s diamond district, is also completely anonymous.

The high-end jewelry collections, designed and made in Antwerp, which summarize the style of jewelry developed in the Flemish city, have a precise image. The processing exclusively with highly qualified craftsmen and with high quality stones, with colorless or fancy diamonds, is in the most classic and traditional style possible. Classic solitaire, even more classic rings with precious stones, endless strap, button earrings, etc. Quality is not lacking, there is no lack of extravagant ideas.

Gold for Gi by Giselle

Can a transgressive (from a stylistic point of view) jewelry designer transgress against herself? For Giselle Effting, a globetrotting Brazilian with a past as a model and a present as a designer based in Florence, it is possible. The creator founded the Gi by Giselle brand following two principles: the use of titanium as a special material for her jewels and an imaginative, unconventional design, with the idea of surprisingly shaped earrings or rings that can be worn by everyone, regardless of age, gender or physical conformation. In fact, almost all the proposed jewels are true to this description.

Ring Meta in oro rosa 18 carati e diamanti
Meta ring in 18k rose gold and diamonds

But if titanium remains Giselle Effting’s favorite metal, the jewelery offer has also been enriched with gold pieces. The first were those of the Gold Inlay collection, in titanium but with gold veins. Then came rings and earrings entirely made of gold, almost always pink and diamonds. In some cases rose gold jewels have been added with small gems such as Paraiba tourmaline and garnets. In short, a transgression against transgression. The gold included in all Gi by Giselle products is 18-karat, recycled and sustainable.

All about titanium jewelery

Do you want to buy a titanium jewel? First, you must read this guide to find out the benefits, price and features of titanium jewelry ♦ ︎

From some years it is increasingly used in high jewelry: titanium is a metal that has so many unique features. But what are the differences with gold and platinum? Is it worth buying a jewel made of titanium? How to Clean and Preserve a Titanium Jewel?

Orecchini in titanio e diamanti

Features. Titanium is a lightweight metal with excellent resistance, three times more than steel, but is much lighter. It is silver-like shiny white when it is pure. Another interesting feature is that it does not cause irritation, allergies or discoloration of the skin: if you suffer from irritation when wearing jewelery, titanium can be the right solution. It is no coincidence that it is also well used for piercings. Titanium is used in jewelery because it does not break or bend (unless it is very thin). Another positive aspect: it do not spoils with sea water or chlorine of the pool, as well as water directed.

In jewelery. Titanium is used in jewelery, but its resistance makes it difficult to process. That’s why titanium jewelry is fairly rare: not all jewelers can blend it (it takes 1723 degrees Celsius, ie 3,135 degrees Fahrenheit, to blend this metal). Only in the late 1990s technology enabled the use of titanium in jewelry, initially, for simple rings and then for more complex pieces.
Titanium is also used to make gold more resistant: in some cases it is enough to add 1% to yellow metal to eliminate the softness of pure gold.
Titanium and colors. Another feature of titanium used in jewelery is that it can be colored. It can, in fact, be anodized to vary the thickness of the surface oxide layer, with a variety of vibrant colors. This process occurs through heating or electric shock: the metal releases its oxides and modifies its color according to the temperature and duration of the process. You can find anodized yellow, pink, red, purple, blue or black titanium.

Life Savers bracelet. White gold, titanium, with 560 diamonds

Curiosity. Titanium was discovered in Cornwall in Great Britain by William Gregor in 1791, but the name was decided by Martin Heinrich Klaproth and refers to the titans of Greek mythology.
For who is recommended. Titanium jewelery can be a good solution for those who want to wear them even when they are caught with some manual activity, from kitchen to childcare, or to DIY. In addition, it is very unlikely that it causes allergies: another point in its favor.

Sabba, orecchini in titanio e diamanti
Sabba, titanium and diamond earrings

The cost. Titanium is not an expensive metal: it is easily found in nature and even though it has a fairly complex workmanship, it does not have a high price. The cost of a jewel in titanium will then be determined by the type of shape, more or less complex, and hence the number of hours it takes to work. Obviously, another fundamental aspect is the value of stones that can be used in jewelery.

How to Clean Titanium. It is simply cleaned with water and, if necessary, a diluted drop of neutral liquid soap. Use a soft toothbrush. Titanium is a tough metal, but cleaning can ruin other materials with which jewel is made, like stones.

The sea in Desigual jewels

From Barcelona, the Desigual fashion brand launches Almar, its second jewelery collection: it is inspired by the sea. The collection includes about twenty pieces in brass with silver or 18-karat gold plating, with the addition of cubic zirconia in some cases. The jewels were designed by Gala Meyer, founder of the Zalio brand and daughter of the founder of the Catalan brand, Thomas Meyer. The fashion brand, therefore, also extends its offer to accessible jewelery (maximum price under 150 euros, but starting from 69.5 euros). The collection is on sale online at desigual.com and in Spain in four stores: the Desigual flagship stores in Madrid and Barcelona, in the T1 store at Barcelona airport and in the Passeig de Mare Nostrum store. The collection includes rings, earrings, pendants, chokers and bracelets, made with motifs such as broken shells, coral textures, stars, abstract suns and flashes of soft colored stones.

In these jewels two energies throb in harmony: one that I interpret as eminently feminine, which refers to the sea and the shapes of shells and corals and their relationship with the matrix; another more masculine, which comes from fire and the sun. I believe that each person, according to their internal balance of forces and energies, can connect with one or the other.
Gala Meyer, designer

The name Almar derives from the union of two words in Spanish, soul (alma) and sea (mar). As if to say that the great expanse of water is also a reason for deep reflection on oneself. And also the memory of when the designer collected, like all children, shells collected on the beach. In short, a jewel, but also a vaguely Proustian symbol (if you haven’t read the Recherche you can always fix it). It is the second collection designed by Gala Meyer, a graduate in Visual Arts at Bennington College in Vermont (USA). The designer began experimenting with jewelry while pregnant and created her own brand, Zalio.

New Gucci horse bit jewelry

The horse bit is back in a new Gucci jewelry collection.

The style inspired by horse riding equipment has been a hallmark of Gucci since the foundation of the brand in the 1920s. The Florentine company used stirrup-shaped metal buckles, red and green or red and blue striped ribbons inspired by horse girths, double stitching like those used for saddles and, starting in the 1950s, introduced the metal element of the bit. This motif was applied to moccasins in 1953, until it became a decorative element that characterizes the entire Gucci production. Including jewelry.

Seventy years after the first introduction of this element, Gucci offers a new line of Horsebit jewelry and watches. The horse bit becomes a sinuous gold object integrated with diamonds and malachite inserts. The wide bracelets are interpreted as a large mesh net, with a very decorative geometric design. The collection for moresetto’s 70th anniversary includes a ring, a necklace and two bracelets, one single-row and one double-row, all made entirely of yellow gold. There are also two new watches, also in yellow gold, with a double-row or triple-row chain.

Kloto curves

From the carpenter’s bench to the jeweler’s bench. It is not an easy leap taken by Senem Gençoğlu, the designer who founded his brand, Kloto. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, she was born into a family with a long tradition in Turkish jewelry. But she, a design lover, wanted to design and make furniture. Simple, linear Scandinavian design objects were her passion. Thus she found herself working seriously in a carpentry shop in Istanbul and in interior and design companies such as Lee Broom, Marcel Wanders, but also for the jeweler Sevan Biçakçi in London, New York, Amsterdam and Istanbul. Then, however, the idea of combining the two aspects prevailed: the Nordic design of objects, with the specialty of the house, jewellery: a decision which is also the fruit, she says, of a childhood spent many days at the Grand Bazaar, studying art and working in the ateliers in the summer, with his father, uncle and brother working in the jewelery shop, specializing in handmade chains.

The synthesis of this path is the Kloto brand, which offers jewels with a simple but refined design, innovative ideas, 18-karat gold and diamonds, but also silver for a more accessible price range. Round and sinuous volumes, unusual solutions, smooth surfaces are the characteristics of the style of the brand, which has also landed at the Couture in Las Vegas.

Roberto Coin makes an encore with Art Déco Mini

Art Déco, one of the inexhaustible trends of jewelry, was also adopted four years ago by Roberto Coin. Art Déco has become one of the brand’s best-loved collections worldwide. Its retro-contemporary design has led Netflix and its authors to present the collection in the second season of the television series Emily in Paris. The Art Déco collection, therefore, was appreciated and now comes back in a mini version. Smaller dimensions, same design, and some novelties in the materials used, such as the addition of carnelian and lapis lazuli mixed with turquoise, malachite, black jade and mother of pearl from the original collection. In addition to being smaller, the jewels of the Art Déco Mini collection are also lighter than previous models.

One of the novelties in the design is, for example, the 18-karat rose gold ring with lapis lazuli, black jade, malachite, turquoise, red agate, mother-of-pearl and diamonds. The stones are cut into rectangular tiles and alternate along the entire perimeter of the ring. There is also a version with a tassel, also in gold: a detail that characterizes the entire Art Déco collection.

Miseno in Italy with Ischia

Miseno, an Italian brand born in 2014 and which has developed mainly on the American market, also extends its proposal to its origins. The brand is presented at Vicenzaoro September 2023 and extends to the Italian market: it is currently distributed in the USA by Neiman Marcus, Saks, Bloomingdales and selected retailers. And the first collection that Miseno presents in Italy is called Ischia: a reference to the origins of the Maison, founded by the Neapolitan Antonio Cardamuro. Ischia is one of the two islands (the other is Capri) not far from Naples.

Ischia is also called green-island, due to its luxuriant vegetation. And the Miseno collection is inspired by leaves and flowers with rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets made in 18-karat white gold with diamonds, blue sapphires and emeralds. Gemstones add a pop of color to jewelry that has three lobes of diamonds and one of green or blue gemstones. There is also a version of the set with a pavé of diamonds only.

Honey luxury with Stenzhorn

Gold has the color of honey and is just as sweet to the recipient, albeit in a different way. The new version of Stenzhorn’s Honey Honey collection also confirms this similarity in jewelery design. The German Maison from Boppard takes the hexagonal motif found in bee hives and elaborates it in the collection in elegant white and warm pink gold with baguette-cut diamonds. Bees are associated with loving care of one’s hive and, in Stenzhorn’s intention, jewelery is associated with a concept of connective love. Furthermore, the hexagonal geometry is associated with the number six, for some a symbol of love and union as well as having been a sacred number for the Roman goddess of love, Venus. The jewels are made of 18-karat yellow gold and hand-painted enamel, enriched with lines of brilliant-cut diamonds.

Jewelery and security at the airport

Do you can wear jewels when passing through the airport security check? Are there jewels that are considered dangerous? Here are all answers to your doubts ♦ ︎

Journey and jewelery: one of the most delicate moments is the security check in the airports. How to behave with necklaces, rings and bracelets? Do you have to wear or leave home? Do you must put it in plastic boxes that go under the control of x-ray scanners to not make the alarm of metal detectors ring? Who has the habit of wearing several jewelery, in addition to the watch, will be asked how should you adjust. The answer is provided by the TSA blog, the Transportation Security Administration, the official site of the US Department of Homeland Security. Please note that those published are advice, not absolute rules. So there may be different behaviors.

Wear the jewels. In essence, however, TSA recommends wearing jewels. There are, however, exceptions: if the jewel is bulky it could be inspected. A large ring or necklace with a maxi pendant could hide dangerous substances. In this case, a specific check will be required. Another solution is to remove jewels before checking them and put them in hand luggage: bag, backpack or small suitcase under the x-ray control. Of course, if you are inexpensive jewelry you can easily put them in the trays along with your smartphone and coins.

Piercing. Metal piercing can cause a metal detector alarm. This, in some cases, may suggest operators further control. You may also be asked to remove the piercing from the body, obviously in the closed room. It is, however, a waste of time.

Glasses. Eyeglasses can be worn while passing to the metal detector: they should not cause the sound of the alarm. In any case, it is always better to wear them than to walk without seeing anything or almost.

The jewels under the Gival volcano

Jewels under the volcano. Gival, a brand controlled by another company, SilMa, is a Sicilian jeweler based in a period villa in Giarre, near Catania and just below Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Gival’s jewels, however, do not reflect a volcanic spirit: they are rather characterized by traditional shapes. Gival’s reference is Silvia Sara Nucifora. The company also controls the Gi.Val Gioielli Valenza brand. The jewels are proudly conceived and made in Sicily.

The jeweler also boasts the concession from the Holy See to Gival for the production of the 2000 Jubilee Crosses collection, recognition which, the company explains, the Vatican has granted for the ethical work carried out over the many years of activity. A part of the proceeds from the sales of the Gival crosses was destined to the Solidarity Fund set up by the Central Committee of the Great Jubilee 2000 for the creation of charitable works. The Maison also underlines its participation in the Designed in China, Made in Italy project, which saw the participation of ten Italian companies, including Gival, which collaborated with the Chinese designer Ben Wu in the creation of earrings with engraved white jade.

The jewels for globetrotters by La Tâche Bobo

The jewels of the La Tâche Bobo brand are an invitation to break the mold. And it is also the story of its founder, Elena Barysenka, Elena Gondorf as a married woman. Born in Belarus, a country anchored to its traditions, she chose to live and study psychology in New York, fashion and design in Milan at the Istituto Marangoni, to take up residence in London, but to live in Thailand, where she makes her jewels together with his team, and Dubai. As if that weren’t enough to make this profile unusual, she has also chosen a name that is difficult to forget. La Tâche in French means stain. Bobo, on the other hand, is a word used to describe the bourgeois-bohemian socio-economic group in France. Wealth, but without paying too much attention to the codified rules.

Elena Gondorf launched her own label in 2013. Even though she didn’t pursue gemology degrees, her jewelry is chock full of gems. But, even if her idea is to compose new, interesting and lively jewels, they are also wearable without difficulty. It sells online, through the most consolidated platforms, such as Moda Operandi.

India in Hong Kong by Sunita Nahata

Jaipur, capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan, is one of the world centers of jewelry. No wonder Sunita Nahata grew up in what is also called the Pink City, and where so many famous jewelers work. However, she is one of those Indian designers (she is not the only one) who has chosen Hong Kong as a base. Even though she has moved to China, however, she hasn’t forgotten her Indian roots, with a touch of Chinese eclecticism blended with Western taste. The result is original. The roots of Jaipur, one of the most important gemstone sourcing and production centers in the world, remain strong. Also because Sunita Nahata looks back on a family made up of grandfather, father, uncles and brothers all involved in the trade of precious stones.

Sunita Nahata founded her own jewelry brand in 2017. She previously worked extensively in a stone trading company Keen Jade, specializing in the most valued gem in Asia. But behind her she also has a Masters in Art and Literature obtained in Jaipur. Her jewels range from cocktail rings with colored gems, to chandelier pendants inspired by the architecture of ancient Indian palaces, up to the most classic jewellery, with diamonds and precious stones combined in the usual forms of high jewellery.

The new jewels with pleats by Nak Armstrong

Texan jeweler Nak Armstrong celebrated its 25th year in business with a space in the historic luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman in New York. Nak Armstrong is also a member of the CFDA (American Fashion Designers Association). It’s a further step forward for Armstrong, who opened his flagship store in Austin, Texas a couple of years ago. The designer is considered a re-inventor of the chandelier earring. The jeweler is internationally recognized for his innovations from standard metalworking techniques and an experimental aesthetic.

Deco Bell 20K Rose Gold Emerald and Opal Earrings

Nak Armstrong launched the first collection in early 2011, quickly bought by Barneys, New York. The style reflects his experience in architecture and fashion: he has developed his own technique of processing gems, which he calls “pleated stone”, with proprietary cuts. SI was also inspired by origami, the technique of creating small folded paper objects after a trip to Japan. Armstrong had co-founded Anthony Nak with partner, Anthony Camargo, of which he remained designer and creative director until 2010, when the two separated and Nak continued with his brand.

Jewelery and collectible watches in Montecarlo with Artcurial

As always, the Artcurial auction house organizes auctions in the middle of summer. And, as always, they are aimed at those who frequent the Côte d’Azur. In the Principality of Monaco, at the Hotel Hermitage in Montecarlo, auctions of watches and jewelery are scheduled from 16 to 19 July, as well as Hermès Vintage, and sculpture. Each sale will be preceded by an exhibition open to the general public.

The Horlogerie de Collection auction will feature iconic pieces and particularly rare vintage watches. The catalog includes a Panda version of the famous Rolex Daytona, with a cream dial and black counters, a vintage piece from 1968, ref. 6239, in excellent condition, today almost impossible to find on the market. Also on sale is a Speedmaster model by Omega made especially for the Raid, the elite unit of the French police. This edition was designed in 2018 by the Parisian watchmaker Antoine de Macedo in collaboration with Omega. In 2021, again at an Artcurial auction, a similar watch was sold in favor of police orphans for the sum of 70,000 euros. Also for watches there is a brand like Jaeger LeCoultre and his Reverso, the company’s best-seller for over 90 years, which is part of a private collection, belonging to a fan of the genre. The collection includes ten original Reversos, such as a rare enamelled model, created by Jaeger LeCoultre in 2003 in collaboration with the Portuguese artist José de Guimarães.

A second piece, produced in 1996 in a limited edition of 25, features an enamelled miniature of a painting inspired by the Czech painter Alfons Mucha. It is estimated at 12,000-18,000 euros. A Rolex/Comex Submariner ref. 16610 supplied to Compagnie Maritime d’Expertise de Marseille will likely be one of the most sought after dive watches of the sale. It is an interesting piece for any professional watch enthusiast.

Dangerous sea for jewelry

Be careful to sea water and swimming pools: ruin your jewelry. Here’s what you must do.
Summer is the time of year when there the most danger for your jewelry. The enemy is called water: that of the sea or the pool. In both cases your jewelry risks a lot. The salt content of sea water is a corrosive substance which can cause serious damage to rings, earrings or necklaces. Even the precious metals, like gold and platinum may be ruined. First, the gold in your jewelry is often an alloy with other metals: for example, what to 18K contains 25% materials such as nickel, or copper or silver. These metals in contact with the sea water is easily to spoil. Even platinum, although more resistant gold, suffers in prolonged contact with salt water.

Vietato fare il bagno con anelli e bracciali, specie se sono bijoux
It is forbidden to swim with rings and bracelets, especially if they are bijoux

Welds danger. One weakness of the jewels are the welds. If a jewel is well done they will not see with your eyes, but there are. The salt can corrode precisely the most delicate parts of the junction between the different parts of a jewel. Another danger is given by the waves or the impact of the jewel caused by swimming. A stroke while swimming due to a collision with the water has a certain relief in a delicate structure such as, for example, a ring. For this are not uncommon in cases of rings in which the jaws which stop the stone will soften and end up leaving free the diamond, or any other gemstone. Even more ruinous is the effect of water of sea on bijoux, that are made with less resistant metals and are usually lighter.

Se per errore si fa il bagno in piscina o in mare con i gioielli, meglio lavarli subito dopo con acqua corrente
If by mistake you bathe in the pool or in the sea with your jewels, it is better to wash them immediately afterwards with running water

Mist up the stones. Another negative effect is that of salt on precious or semi-precious stones. Not only do you risk losing them for ever, but swimming in the sea will make them less bright because of the salt that is deposited on the surface. A bathroom between the waves of the sea is also not recommended for the pearls. The jewels have the same dangers in the swimming pool: it is better to take them off, and then you can take a bath.

Anche l'acqua di una piscina può essere nociva per i gioielli
Even swimming pool water can be harmful to jewelry due to chemicals dissolved in the water

How to fix it. And if you forget to take them off before you dive? The best thing to do is wash the jewels in cold or lukewarm water with a drop or two of mild detergent. After holding them to soak for about ten minutes the jewelry should be cleaned with a toothbrush with very soft bristles. The gems are polished with a cloth.

The jewels with Tubular motif, handmade, are offered in different variations with respect to the original distinctive logo of the house, the Tubular Circle which embeds an M in the center. The cornice motif has a rounded rectangle shape. The White Rose, flower and identifying symbol of the brand, is reinterpreted through small three-dimensional roses with overlapping petals. One Thousand and One Nights with Noudar

The Perfumes of the One Thousand and One Nights in the Noudar Jewels collections ♦

The perception of uses and customs associated with the Arab world is conditioned by the chronicle and, sometime, preconceptions. In fact, the world, even the Arabic one, is not all the same thing. As you can see with the Noudar Jewels brand, the word derives from the ancient Arabic word meaning gold. Images from the Noudar catalog are enough to display a different image of the woman from what she usually circulates. You can see the pictures on this page.

The refined design of Paola Brussino

There are those who limit themselves to re-proposing small variations of the same subject. And who, like Paola Brussino, sets out on unexplored roads. Choice of materials and extraordinarily effective design constitute the map of the Turin architect and designer, who in her long career has collaborated with international jewelery brands and the most prestigious niche maisons. Her bio states that her work has been exhibited in various European countries, Qatar, Japan, Russia and the United States. After having lived for a long time in Geneva, she returned to Italy in 2012 and began a path of pure research.

One of the aspects that characterize Paola Brussino’s jewels is the choice to work with elements such as carbon, titanium, zirconium and corian in high jewellery. Zirconium, for example, is a metal with an appearance reminiscent of titanium. It is mostly made from zircon and is very resistant to corrosion. It is used in nuclear plants and, now, also in the designer’s rings and earrings.

Furthermore, the roots that sink into design and architecture have directed Paola Brussino’s jewelery towards jewels that express rigor and fantasy at the same time, lightness and luxury, but with defined and pleasant, natural and elegant geometries.
