The evil ones thus welcomed the news from the Responsible Jewelery Council, an association for ethics in the world of precious stones, according to which the De Beers Group, leader in the production of diamonds, has obtained the certification attesting to the highest ethical, social and environmental standards established by the RJC. De Beers had ended up in the sights of critics after the film “Blood Diamonds”, although in truth the diamond giant was not named or involved in the story told.
Many, however, had associated the illicit trafficking in the diamond trade environment, depicted in the film, with the major mining group. Which didn’t go down well with De Beers managers.«The positive assessment of the audit was conducted by Firouzeh Siavoshi of SGS, an independent auditing company accredited by the Responsible Jewelery Council», specified Michael Rae, CEO of RJC. The Responsible Jewelery Council is an international non-profit organization that brings together more than 400 companies. Its members are committed to promoting ethical principles, human rights, social rights and adopting environmental practices in a transparent and responsible manner throughout the jewelry sector, from mining to retail.
The aim is to strengthen consumer confidence in diamonds, gold and platinum, as well as in jewelery products. Members of the RJC are monitored by accredited auditors, who verify compliance with the established Code of Ethics. De Beers is a member (since 2012) of the Anglo American group. Founded in 1888, De Beers is a world leader in diamond mining and trading. It employs around 16 thousand people worldwide and is the world’s largest diamond producer by value, active in Botswana, Canada, Namibia and South Africa.
