A very important jewelry auction is scheduled at Sotheby’s in New York on November 20 and 21, with dream pieces. The auction will feature personal objects and jewelry belonging to Mrs. Rachel Lowe Lambert Lloyd Mellon, widow of magnate Paul Mellon, with pieces by Verdura, Schlumberger and Givenchy, as well as vintage jewelry by Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Black Starr & Frost. For example, there is a magnificent and rare pear-shaped Fancy Vivid Blue diamond, estimated at between 10 and 15 million dollars (7-11 million euros), with a color that according to Sotheby’s recalls the Hope diamond. It will be paired with a Fancy Blue Diamond, an exquisite Rivière diamond by Cartier, and an intense yellow Fancy diamond.
Paul Mellon (June 11, 1907 – February 1, 1999) was an American philanthropist and owner and breeder of thoroughbred racehorses. He was co-heir to one of the world’s largest fortunes, Mellon Bank, created by his grandfather Thomas Mellon, his father Andrew W. Mellon, and his father’s brother Richard B. Mellon. Paul Mellon, his sister Ailsa Mellon-Bruce, and his cousins Sarah Mellon and Richard King Mellon were all estimated to be among the top eight richest people in the United States, with fortunes of between $400 million and $700 million each (about $3.4 billion and $5.9 billion in today’s dollars).
