Sicilian coral crosses continents and conquers Japan. For the coral of Sciacca, a small village in Sicily, participation in the International Jewellery in Tokyo is shaping up as a success. Perhaps also thanks to the new Consorzio Corallo Sciacca. Five Sicilian companies and laboratories showed up in Tokyo, an expression of Sicilian craftsmanship, which has an ancient tradition in working with coral. A story linked to the history of the Ferdinandea island, also called “Neverland”. It is an island that emerged in 1831 from the depths of the Sicilian sea, between Pantelleria and Sciacca, but a year later, in 1832, it sank into the abyss and disappeared. Over time, a coral deposit developed on the submerged volcanic island, discovered many years later, in 1875, by fishermen from Sciacca. This coral from the Mediterranean Sea has unique qualities in the world: it is composed of tapered branches of relatively small dimensions and is tinged with the lightest shades of salmon pink to the most intense, darkening even to the black of fossil coral and sometimes presenting yellow spots. The founders of the Consortium are called Oro di Sciacca, G&M Gioielli Caruana, Nocito, Sabrina Orafa in Sciacca and Maurizio Alfeo Orafo.
