Holydays in red with coral

What jewels to wear for holidays? Red is the color of winter holidays and is also the color of coral, which can give an extra touch of liveliness ♦

Winter holidays are colored red, like coral. For this reason, jewels with this material can be an excellent choice to wear for the winter holidays, together with gold and the green color. In fact, shades of red generally go well with an elegant dress and are in line with the Christmas atmosphere. Another advantage is that red coral jewelry is quite easy to find. But be careful: choose those that can prove to be sustainable from an environmental point of view. Many jewelers, who have understood that they cannot risk compromising coral colonies already put to the test by rising temperatures, can show certificates proving the sustainable origin of the coral used for the jewellery.

Furthermore, if you have jewels like the ones we publish on this page, be careful not to ruin them. Coral is a natural material, beautiful but also delicate. Coral jewelery must be treated with great care. Coral, like pearls, is a product of animal origin (it is composed of micro organisms) and is not a gemstone or mineral. The tiny corals live in the sea and over the years form calcareous skeletons. This is why you need to be careful. Here you will find the right suggestions to best preserve coral.

How to clean coral. It should be cleaned with a soft damp cloth and rinsed with warm soapy water, then dried carefully. But it should not be placed in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, nor subjected to a bath in water. If the jewel is dusty, you can also remove the dust using a can of compressed air, of the kind used to clean the inside of computers.

Antonino De Simone, two centuries of red color

Coral and more coral, for over 190 years. Yes, it has been almost two centuries (since 1830) that Antonino De Simone has specialized in the processing of red coral from the Mediterranean. The Neapolitan company (from Torre del Greco) has reached its sixth generation, passing on its experience in the processing of material that is the son of the sea. Today it continues to offer jewels that enhance coral in its various shades, from bright red to pink to sophisticated white. All thanks to Antonino De Simone, who in the mid-nineteenth century was able to get the artisan workshop off the ground after learning the coral processing techniques.

From generation to generation, since 2010, after the death of the grandson of the same name, Antonino De Simone, the company is led by Gioia De Simone, together with Michele Palomba. The company combines the traditional production of semi-finished coral products for wholesale customers with a wide range of finished jewels under the Antonino De Simone brand, a brand now of international fame. Alongside coral, however, the Maison also produces jewels with turquoise, pearls, lapis lazuli, chrysoprase, diamonds.

How to clean and polish the coral

How to clean, store and polish your coral jewelry. Here are some useful tips for those who want a brilliant coral ♦ ︎

Coral jewels are very beautiful and are often worn especially in summer (but not only): a coral necklace is perfect with a light dress and, perhaps, on tanned skin. But how do you clean coral jewelry? And how can you keep rings, necklaces and earrings made with coral? Here are some useful tips for cleaning and storing your coral jewelry.

Collana in corallo e oro indossata
Caterina Murino, coral and gold necklace worn

The coral. Before discovering how to clean and preserve coral, it is good to make a premise. Coral is commonly regarded as a simple material, like a stone. But this is not the case: the coral is made up of thousands of tiny organisms a few identical millimeters large, genetically called polyps (obviously not polyps with tentacles and suckers): their calcium carbonate secretions form the solid structure that develops the branches. coral. In short, it must be understood that coral is unique and also very delicate. Like pearls, for example, coral should be worn often.

Salvatore Collaro, ring in white gold, diamonds and red coral

Opaque coral. With the passing of time often the coral can become opaque. The brilliance of the newly purchased jewel disappears and remains a reflexless surface. This is because the superficial coral polishing, obtained during the workmanship of the craftsman who made the jewel, has been eliminated from everyday use. To ruin the coral are, in particular, sweat, skin acidity and cosmetic substances. So if you want to wear a coral necklace keep it away from body creams, perfumes and deodorants. Another tip: Avoid keeping the coral in sunlight, too high temperature can ruin it. Better keep the coral jewel in a drawer, indoors.

Methods of cleaning. Coral is a delicate material and should be handled with care. One of the methods to clean the coral is to immerse it in a basin of water, where a few drops of detergent have been dissolved. Some recommend ammonia, but it must be used with caution because it can ruin the jewel. After bathing the coral for about half an hour, you can pass a cloth or use a cotton swab to remove any dirt that has softened with washing.

How to polish the coral. If the coral is very damaged, polishing is the same as that of origin, it is best to turn to an orefice. Another less risky method is to use simple olive oil: pour a few drops on a soft cloth and pass the fabric over the coral. To prevent it from becoming opaque, twice a year you can rub the coral in a cotton cloth, perhaps soaked with liquid wax, not too vigorously. in the case of a necklace, a good habit is also to change the inner thread to the jewel every two or three years.

The ancient and modern art of engraving lives with Cameo Italiano

A life with a chisel in hand. And the result is exceptional: it is called Cameo Italiano. The company, which is now based in the Goldsmith Center of Marcianise (Caserta), is the result of the work of the Di Luca family. The story began in 1957, with Michele Di Luca. Having learned the art of carving, the master goldsmith decided to continue the tradition that made Torre del Greco, Naples and its surroundings the world capital of Cameo.

An art that was immediately appreciated also abroad, so much so that the jeweler received a gold medal for having contributed to the economic development of the region. The cameo tradition was continued by the sons Gino, Anna, Pina and Marinella, who in 1980 transformed the company with a profound organizational renewal, but without affecting the craftsmanship of the workmanship, which is still done by hand. Gino also deserves credit for launching the brand recognized worldwide in 2012, Cameo Italiano. A goldsmith’s excellence that has renewed the tradition without erasing its peculiarity, as evidenced by the jewels presented at VicenzaOro January and the appreciation of an actress like Cate Blanchett.

The multiplications of Mattia Mazza

The district of Naples is the place in the world where a centuries-old art of working coral has developed. It is also the story of Mattia Mazza, a company founded at the beginning of the twentieth century in Torre del Greco, a town that is part of the Naples area. More than a hundred years have passed since then and four generations have followed one another at the helm of the company. In all this time, the company has expanded its scope of activity. Alongside coral, Mattia Mazza has introduced the production of jewelry with pearls, turquoise, natural stones and cameos, another specialty of Neapolitan jewelry.

Alongside Mattia Mazza Jewelery, Mattia Mazza Pearls was born, dedicated to jewelery with pearls, Mark, a line of men’s jewelery, Kolié 925 for silver jewelery. Diana, on the other hand, is a brand for jewelry in 18-karat gold and precious stones: rubies, emeralds, sapphires, aquamarine and VVS1-colored F / G diamonds, as well as black and brown diamonds.

The precious colors of Picchiotti

The pleasure of being out of the ordinary. It is one of the reasons that lead to choose a different dress, or simply an accessory. Of course, being out of the ordinary doesn’t mean being bizarre, extravagant, ridiculous. The beauty of being unusual is when what you choose to wear is particularly interesting. It strikes, without offending the eyes. Indeed, it attracts attention for its beauty. This is the criterion followed over the years by Picchiotti to compose the series of high jewelery pieces that has the name of Essentially Color. The name already indicates which is the unusual path followed by the Italian Maison famous for its high quality production.

Personalized cameos and coral jewelry from the Rialto bridge, in Venice, with Eredi Jovon ♦ ︎

Do not be fooled: in addition to bijoux for tourists, the jewelry Eredi Jovon, which is located right on the Rialto bridge, in Venice, also sells more interesting pieces. In particular, the jewelry store is specializes in cameos, also made to measure, and in coral jewelry.

Orecchini in oro e corallo

The history of jewelry dates back to 1934, when Luciano Jovon opened the shop on what is one of the most famous bridges in the world. Specialized initially in the art of carving shells and agate to make cameos on silver frames, in the fifties Eredi Jovon has expanded the range of action to the coral and can now also offer pieces of a certain value. As times change, today Rialto jewelry aims to sell around the world through the internet. But, moreover, it also offers a special service: the creation of customized cameos with the profile of the client (but also of a couple), based on photo or drawing. Something better than the usual photo of the boyfriend / girlfriend on the screen phone. All jewels are designed and manufactured in Italy.

Enzo Liverino 1894, the top jewelry of coral

/

Coral necklaces, coral earrings, coral rings: but Enzo Liverino 1894 is also much more ♦

The jewels that are not usually owned can be admired only in two places: in jewelry or at major jewelry fairs. You can also peek at the necks of celebrities during their red carpet walks, but they can be seen from afar. There is, however, another possibility, which concerns only a few jewels. They are those kept in museums. One of these is the Coral Museum, in Torre del Greco (Naples). And within this museum there is an entire collection of a single jeweler: the Liverino collection.

Collana di corallo con lapislazzulo

Enzo Liverino 1894 is the name of the Maison that has been producing and processing coral for over five generations. But with great attention to the environmental aspect: Liverino is president of the CIBJO Coral Commission, for the Certification as Carbon Neutral through the CIBJO Greenhouse Gas Measurement Initiative.

The collection, in particular, was started in 1934 by Basilio Liverino, when he was 16 years old. Over time he has collected a thousand pieces of jewelery and sculptures in coral and semi-precious stones. The company is still one of the most popular coral jewelry producers today. In addition to necklaces with all shades of coral, rings and earrings, Enzo Liverino 1984 also has cameos, another traditional craftsmanship of the Torre del Greco area, among his specialties. But that’s not all: he recently developed a truly original idea: tiles made of pressed coral. They are jewel-tiles, intended for those who can afford jewel-like furnishings.

Aucella in red from four generations

Coral and cameos: they are the specialty of one of the most traditional jewelers of Torre del Greco: Aucella

Coral for four generations grown in the Neapolitan pole of this art: Aucella has been part of this elite for eighty years. In Torre del Greco, home of the goldsmith tradition that focuses on the red fruit of the sea, the Aucella family has worked among corals, cameos and jewels from 1930 to today. And in the spring of 2019 Vincenzo Aucella was elected president of Assocoral, the Italian association that brings together producers of coral and cameos jewelry. Aucella’s define their passion, with an ironic habit (typical of the Neapolitans), “a mysterious disease”.

Orecchini con corallo e diamanti
Orecchini con corallo e diamanti

Fortunately, the cure for this mysterious disease has not been found, and the history of these coral specialists, born when this marine material was still found in the Gulf of Naples, has yet to end. The coral is worked smooth or engraved, for jewelry or cameos. The jewels, originally created on customer request, are now enriched with natural stones, diamonds, South Sea pearls and Tahiti. But alongside the unique pieces, the brand also inaugurated a less demanding line of products, in silver, with the name 925byAucella. Those you see below, however, combine coral with gold, diamonds and precious stones. In addition to coral, Aucella also produces cameos. Among the specialties of the house there is also the making of cameos starting from a photograph: much better than a selfie.

New trend for Oro Trend

/

The new rings, bracelets and earrings with colored stones signed by OroTrend.

Maybe Aldo Bellotto and Sandro Ferraris, founders of Oro Trend in 1980, don’t would have imagined they would sold rings, bracelets and necklaces produced in Valenza in the most remote of the East boutiques. Maybe not. Instead it is exactly what happened: the quality of jewelry, combined with an all-Italian exuberance in the combinations of colors and the choice of volumes, has made the company a strong brand on the international market in a short time, also with the activity is performed for third parties, that is, to other jewelery companies.

So much so that three years ago the company moved into a larger building, always in the Piedmont town. And to say that the name chosen for the company, Oro Trend, is not particularly evocative of italian tradition and craftsmanship. But what matters is the result. The style of the collections follows the classic models, with some workhorse, like at a twisted gold wire jewelry. There aren’t oddities goldsmith, but the craftsmanship combined with an instinctive ability in approaching the stones.

Surprising Scala Gioielli

The small masterpieces by Scala Gioielli, goldsmith’s virtuosity in Marcianise ♦ ︎

Italy is the country with an advanced economy that has the highest percentages of family businesses. This is also true in jewelery and is also why small exceptional handicrafts abound, while lacking (with few exceptions) large specimens such as the French Maisons. An example is Scala Gioielli, a company based in the Orafi Center in Marcianise, Caserta. Born in 1980 in Naples on the initiative of Eduardo Scala, is managed by the founder of the company, by his wife Caterina, and by her children Luca, Daniele and Alessandro. Almost 40 years have passed, but the company continues to hold the flag of quality craftsmanship high.

As you can expect from a brand that works in the Naples area, Scala Gioielli excels in the art of coral processing. Bracelets, elaborate necklaces, pendants that are small sculptures are part of the catalog of the Maison. But not only: Scala Gioielli knows how to produce pieces of surprising goldsmith virtuosity. For example, the 18-carat white gold-plated brooch with diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies, with the central body of the bird-brooch made of a Brazilian aquamarine. Or in the Moro Venetian brooch, in yellow gold and 18k white gold, with ebony bust surrounded by brilliant cut diamonds, emeralds and colored sapphires. A small masterpiece.

Confuorto, sun, tradition and coral

Among the Italian jewelers who fly from one international fair to another there is also Confuorto. A brand that has long been operating in the world of jewelry and, to be precise, in the goldsmith district born, raised and developed around Torre del Greco, near Naples. It is the great school of workshops where coral is still carved, cameos are created, and people often work with the techniques of a hundred years ago. Even if Confuorto has a relatively recent history: the company was born, in fact, in 1987.

Coral and pearls: Salvatore Collaro continues the tradition of jewelry with the sons of the sea ♦ ︎

If you, in italian language, anagram the word coral, you can get Collaro. Who knows, maybe that’s also what the Collaro family has tied to the red son of the sea. Founded at the end of the 1950s by Salvatore and Lella Collaro, the Torre del Greco (Naples) company continues to observe the tradition of the founders. The coral, however, has adapted to the times and the jewels have a modern look, with volumes not prone to chisel work but rather with smooth, smooth surfaces.

At Centro Orafo il Tarì, where Salvatore Collaro has the headquarters, another type of sea fruit is still working: the pearl. Australian, Chinese, Japanese or Thaiti, pearls are used for jewels created by the fantasy of Liliana and Lucia, who continue the family tradition. Jewelery with pearls also have the advantage of being interpreted in a younger, lighter way, while jewelery with coral, often adorned with a diamond pavé, are more demanding. The Evanueva world

From Torre del Greco to the world, from coral to precious and semi precious stones: it is the story of Evanueva by Iacobelli family.
From wholesale coral and turquoise processing, to the production of jewelry, up to the launch of a new brand. The Italian brand Evanueva was born in 2002 on the initiative of Iacobelli family in Torre del Greek, near Naples, land that traditionally brings together many gold companies specialized in jewelery made from coral. The Iacobelli family, in fact, work and trade in coral and semiprecious stones for decades. But the idea of moving to build the brand’s image has been linked to the concept of renewal. A new woman, Evanueva, in fact.

The jewelry does not portray the classical scheme of the Torre del Greco jewelry: necklaces nothing with corals, although some coral here and there remained. Rather, rings with smoky quartz, amethyst parure, iolites, rodolite and rubellite, etcetera. In short, semi precious gems that are fashionable, on gold and more traditional forms. The formula was successful and now the Evanueva jewels are sold in different parts of the world.

How to recognize real coral

They gave you a beautiful coral necklace. But will it be real coral? Can you recognize an authentic coral from a fake when you are about to buy a jewel? How to distinguish real coral from counterfeit coral? Before discovering how to recognize coral, you must of course know what coral is.

Collana in corallo arancio
Collana in corallo arancio

What is coral. Everyone knows that coral before being a material for necklaces, earrings or bracelets is a living organism. Corals, for biology, are marine invertebrates of the Anthozoa class of the phylum Cnidaria. They are tiny individuals, each a few millimeters long, called polyps (but they do not have to do with the homonymous fish), which live in compact colonies. There are many types of coral. What is used for jewelry is a kind of skeleton that forms over the years, produced by the individuals who make up the community: this structure can measure up to several meters. Corals require sunlight and clear, shallow water (less than 60 meters or 200 feet). Coral is delicate and is increasingly at risk of bleaching due to stress due to the higher temperature of the water or the toxins present in the sea. Make sure your jewelry has a legitimate and sustainable origin.

True or false. How to recognize a real coral from an imitation? The first rule to follow is: look for the bad part. It is not a paradox. Perfection does not exist in nature. A completely natural material will always have small imperfections which, however, signal its authenticity. Warning: a ring with a perfect coral cabochon is not necessarily fake. The jeweler may simply have eliminated the imperfections. But it is very difficult to erase any traces of what is natural, such as small spots, concentric lines similar to those of wood (they indicate the growth of the coral branch). An idea may be to take a good look at the back (if any) of the jewel, for example a ring: usually any imperfections are reserved for the hidden part.

Black coral. There is red, pink, white coral. And then there is the black coral. But, in reality, the latter does not belong to the same family as the others. What is called black coral is a marine plant (gorgonacea) that grows among the waves of the sea in the area of the equator. Coral, on the other hand, as we have seen, is made up of thousands of small polyps. Black coral, which is often dark brown, is a very hard plant that can be worked on. Be careful not to mistake this material for real coral. Incidentally: black coral is not uncommon (as some would have us believe) and has a rather low value.

The angel skin. One of the traps of dishonest jewelers is to sell fake angel skin coral. This is the name of a rare variety of Satsuma compact pink coral, of Japanese origin: the fewer white spots it has, the better the quality. This type of coral has a particular characteristic, which helps to recognize it immediately: it costs a lot, figures with three zeros. Therefore, a jewel with a lower price is not angel skin, but simple pink coral. Nice, but that’s another thing. By the way: precisely because angel skin coral is so rare, it is usually sold with a guarantee certificate: better ask for it.

Amazing Maccarini

The goldsmith tradition, with some unusual combination, of Maccarini Piero from Valenza ♦ ︎
It seems like a story of other times: Maccarini Piero, a goldsmith company in Valenza, is still a lab where jewelry is produced like many years ago. The small Maison was founded in 1966 by Piero Maccarini, a goldsmith born in Valenza in 1938, jewelery designer and skilled craftsman. He led the company until 2001, remaining as a consultant when he left to his son Massimo, who was also born in the small Piedmont city, but in 1969. He now heads the company.

The acknowledged feature of the company has the ability to combine differently three colors, the classic ones of the precious stones: red, green and blue. Since 1970, jewelery collections have been associated with sapphires, rubies and emeralds. In the early 1990s, the brand started designing white, yellow and pink gold creations, then using white, black and brown diamonds, including other semi-precious stones. But, curiously, Maccarini Piero also proposes jewelery with coral, usually a material reserved for jewelers in southern Italy. Red or white coral is matched with stones like diamonds or garnets, or with the opal, with a really unusual contrast. Lavinia Andorno

Collaro in the foreground

The jewels of the Neapolitan brand Salvatore Collaro will be on air by tv. At popular prices ♦ ︎
Jewels are no longer found only in jewelry. The technology, in fact, makes other channels available to the Maison of the sector: internet, of course, but also the «old» television. Last to approach this tool is Salvatore Collaro, a brand from Campania that has chosen to present its jewels on the Qvc channel. The company was founded at the end of the Fifties by Salvatore and Lella Collaro in Torre del Greco (Naples), although today the headquarters has moved to the goldsmith center of the Tarì, in Caserta. Even today, the company follows the tradition of the founders and not only with the typical material of the area, the coral.

In fact, with time, the Maison has added the other classic product of the sea, the pearls. The jewels have a style adapted to the time, very modern, with precise geometries that contrast with the irregular shape of the coral. The collection proposed through Qvc is made of gilded silver, coral, spheres or onyx discs. Prices are really popular: from around 30 to 200 euros. Giulia Netrese

Mazza, from Naples to New York

The jewels of the Mazza family, from Torre del Greco (Naples) to Las Vegas, passing through New York City

In times when migration involves millions of people, even with dramatic aspects, we forget that the movement of people from one continent to the other is not new. In the past two centuries, for example, Italy has been a country from which thousands of thousands of people started looking for luck. Among them was also the Mazza family, a specialist in goldsmith’s work in Torre del Greco, near Naples. It is known that specialists in the art of working coral and cameos have grown and still live in this small area.

Starting from 1840, the Mazza family also worked coral and mother of pearl for cameos. Founded in 1864, the family moved to the United States, to New York. Louis Mazza continued the work with the help of his four children. The third son, William, in particular, in 1970 produced his first collection for I. Magnum & Co. and Bergdorf Goodman under the name of Mazza. Today the family is in its fifth generation and William is joined by his three sons William jr, Jeffrey and Steven. The story continues, still with coral and, of course, with other techniques that have added to the starting one.

In Naples the tradition of Ferrara Gifè

In Naples (Italy), one of the goldsmiths with greater tradition is Ferrara Gifè, an acronym for Gianluca Ferrara, son of Luigi Ferrara, the founder of the company. After attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Luigi Ferrara founded the company in 1972. The study of past painters and sculptors probably influenced the jeweler’s style. Its production, in fact, has nothing of the minimalism of many contemporary jewels, but largely reflects the decorative criteria of the past. Many jewels, such as earrings or bracelets, are anchored, in fact, to the aesthetic taste of the Renaissance, Art Deco or Art Nouveau. In short, many jewels have an elaborate and vintage style.

In the Ferrara Gifé catalog, in any case, there are also examples of more modern design. In the production, moreover, there are the jewels made with coral, which is the specialty of the goldsmiths of Naples and surroundings. Furthermore, alongside gold and precious stones, Ferrara Gifè often uses pearls.

The new Art Deco by Roberto Coin

//

Art deco is one of the styles most used by jewelers, as evidenced by the historic collection of Roberto Coin. Perhaps not everyone knows that the name is a synthesis of Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes, an event which was held in Paris in 1925 and which gave birth to this style that enhances geometric shapes. A fashion that, in particular, was in vogue in America until 1940. And that left deep traces in the world of jewelry.

Launched a few years ago with a good reception from the public, the Roberto Coin Art Deco collection has continued to renew that style made of zigzag lines, wide curves, pointed corners and soft tassels. The latest pieces have only been presented recently, but more or less every year the Venetian Maison adds some novelties. These are rings that do not go unnoticed, with tassels and inserts of black jade, malachite, mother of pearl and diamonds. Last year rings, earrings and pendants were added with diamonds and malachite or fossil coral: an unusual material, which presents on the surface like small inflorescences. Art Deco, in short, but completely original.
