For Agatha Christie, even her jewels are a mystery. A brooch and a ring that belonged to the great crime writer were sold at auction for more than 400 times the amount paid to a mysterious buyer. The story of the two jewels is surprising: they were found by a woman who had purchased an old suitcase. Inside there was a 19th-century diamond brooch in silver and gold and a ring with three brilliant-cut diamonds.
The brooch has now been sold for around 34.65 euros and the ring for 27,400 euros at an auction held by Bonhams in London. A price much higher than the 130 euros paid for the suitcase a few years ago.
The brooch and the ring were in a safety box inside the suitcase purchased at an auction in 2006. For years, the contents of the box remained a mystery, as the key to open it was missing. In the end it was forced: the brooch and ring had been mentioned in Agatha Christie’s autobiography as precious heirlooms belonging to her mother, Clara Margaret Miller. This thriller has also been solved.
