Breil’s Rays with Bow Shot

Bow Shot, watches for those who don’t want to compromise. Breil watches with a strong character, as is the nature of the Binda group brand. The Bow Shot chronographs have a 43-millimeter steel case decorated with a fluted matte-finish lacquered bezel, which is also the identifying element of the collection. It’s Valentine’s time. Valentine’s Day arrives on time and, with the appointment, also the time for a gift. The Hip Hop brand of Diffusione Orologi combines the two aspects with the Hearts & Love collection, which reinterprets the event dedicated to Cupid in a pop key. The collection is made with white silicone straps printed in red and hot pink that identify two models. The style is defined as graffiti, with hearts that appear to be hand-drawn and the lettering Love, which forms a pattern across the entire surface. Also on the dial appears a little heart drawn in black at 4 o’clock, which is combined with silver Arabic numerals to indicate the hours.

Another version of the watch uses three languages: ti amo (Italian), I love you (English) and je t’aime (French). The dial is simple, with the hours marked by thin IP light gold indexes. Like all Hip Hop watches, the Hearts & Love models are decomposable: each model consists of a strap and a case that can be separated from each other, allowing the latter to be mounted on straps of different colors that can be purchased separately.
The case is in 32 mm polycarbonate, equipped with a Miyota2035 three-sphere quartz movement. The watches in the Hip Hop collection are also waterproof up to 50 meters. The price is 39.90 euros.

Six new sports timepieces from Tag Heuer

In Singapore at the Lvmh Watch Week the time has also come for Tag Heuer. The brand that is part of the French luxury group has presented six new models and half of these are smartwatches. Like the Tag Heuer Connected Caliber E4 Sport Edition in black titanium. Or a slightly smaller (42mm) version of the Connected Caliber E4 Golf Edition, designed for players who play nine or 18-hole green grass courses. It has a lighter version in size, also suitable for women. The smartwatch has Full Shot Tracking functionality – it tracks every shot from tee to green, including putting. This timepiece has advanced features: it uses machine learning, can track stats and even make personalized recommendations. The Connected Caliber E4 Golf Edition has an ultra-lightweight case and is offered on a black leather strap with green stitching or a white rubber strap and three Tag Heuer branded golf balls. Available this spring with the app for iOS (iPhone) and Android devices.

The first model of the Connected series is from 2015. The series continues with the Connected Caliber E4 in completely black titanium, now also in a 42 millimeter version which is, together with the golf watch, the lightest and most popular smartwatch from Tag Heuer.

The Connected Sport Edition, a 45 mm watch, updated via software starting from February, will have the new Trail & Hiking application, with an optimized barometer (also for keeping track of slopes), a new redesigned black rubber breathable mesh strap available in red, orange and blue with a buckle closure designed to allow for on-the-fly adjustments, a rubber crown insert that makes it adjustable even with wet fingers.

Another novelty is the update of a racing watch introduced decades ago, the Monza. The new 42-millimetre Monza Flyback Chronometer Edition is a modern take on a model first introduced in 1976 to celebrate legendary driver Niki Lauda’s Formula 1 World Championship in 1975 and, concurrently, the motor racing track located at Monza, Italy. The timepiece features an ultralight carbon case and is powered by the in-house Caliber Heuer 02 Flyback movement, Cosc certified chronograph. It is the first time that the brand offers the flyback function on a modern watch outside the Autavia line.

2023 is also the year of the sixtieth anniversary of the Carrera Chronograph, a watch created by Jack Heuer inspired by the dangerous road race, the Carrera Panamericana, in Mexico. The anniversary Carrera Chronograph is limited to 600 pieces and has a 39mm polished steel case, silver dial with black counters and vintage pushers. The model is inspired by the late Sixties Carrera 2447 SN (silver and noir). Almost a faithful reinterpretation of the model, but there are also small differences, such as the use of Super-LumiNova to illuminate the dial instead of radioactive tritium, which was indicated by a T on the dial. The watch is powered by the in-house Heuer 02 movement with an 80-hour power reserve.

The latest model introduced is the titanium version of the Aquaracer Solargraph, presented in 2022 at Watches & Wonders Geneva. The Solargraph is Tag Heuer’s first solar-powered watch: it can be fully charged by sunlight in less than 20 hours and, once fully charged, can run for up to six months without needing to be recharged. It is powered by the TH50-00 caliber movement, created exclusively for Tag Heuer by the La Joux-Perret Manufacture in Switzerland. It is made of titanium, with a size of 40 millimeters, and has been designed to be more resistant.

The Divas’ Dream line by Bulgari is inspired by the period that made the Maison famous, that of the Dolce Vita, and combines haute horlogerie with the art of jewelery that characterizes the Maison.

The new creation is equipped with the hand-assembled 9S85 Hi-Beat 36000 automatic mechanical caliber, has an accuracy margin of approximately +5 to -3 seconds per day and offers a power reserve of 55 hours. It is produced in a limited edition of 1,200 pieces, first exclusively for the Grand Seiko Online Boutique, and from February it will also become available in the Grand Seiko Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide.

Not only that: the brand’s watches also traveled into space in 1966 and for this they obtained NASA certification. Dragons and phoenix at the time of Vacheron Constantin

The biggest watch collectors are found in Asia. And in China the dragon is a mythological animal full of meanings. In the West, on the other hand, it is the phoenix, a bird reborn from its ashes, that has entered mythology, even if the bird is also present in Chinese tradition. Two aspects that prompted Vacheron Constantin to create three Traditionnelle tourbillon timepieces in a limited and numbered edition of 16 pieces for each type of watch, inspired by these two symbolic animals. On the hand-guilloché dial, the phoenix and dragon take the form of sculpted rose gold applications.

The three versions of the model are different starting from the galvanic treatment of the dial: it can be black, dark blue and silver. The pink gold case has a diameter of 41 millimeters, and is engraved with cloud-shaped scrollwork on the bezel and lugs, forming a low-relief motif on the caseband. The watch uses the self-winding caliber 2160 with tourbillon and consists of 188 elements. The ultra-thin movement is just 5.65 millimeters thick thanks to the peripheral rotor, which guarantees an 80-hour power reserve. The case has a sapphire crystal case back, through which the details of the finishes can be admired.

The Traditionnelle tourbillon watch therefore reproduces the dance of the phoenix and dragon around the pearl, one of the typical symbols of Chinese tradition. The finish of the watch evolved along the way: initially the pearl had to be polished and the flames sandblasted, but in reality, due to its very small thickness (3/10 of a millimetre), the Maison decided to do the opposite . The mythical creatures are represented through rose gold applications, printed and finished by hand with the ramolayage technique, which involves modeling with a burin and the subsequent smoothing of the parts in relief with a file. The exquisite details and precise operations used to depict the plumage of the rooster-headed phoenix, symbol of the Chinese empress, and the undulating body of the scaled dragon, emblem of the emperor, orchestrate a celestial choreography.

The whole scene comes to life thanks to the Maltese cross-shaped movable tourbillon cage, emblem of Vacheron Constantin, while the regulator acts as a support for one of the dragon’s legs, and the beating of the phoenix’s wings seems to mark the rhythm. On the lunette and on the handles, the sky is symbolized by a series of volutes carved in bas-relief.

The new model marks a new stage in the partnership between Roger Dubuis and Lamborghini Squadra Corse. A pattern that looks like a painting with strong colors. It is no coincidence that the Excalibur Spider Huracán Sterrato MB was presented during Art Basel Miami, alongside the Huracán supercar. Roger Dubuis’ watch is powered by the RD630 calibre. A clockwork engine is specially designed to reflect the hexagonal air intakes of Lamborghini Squadra Corse racing cars, just as the symmetry of the twin barrels nods to the Huracán line and the fuel tanks of its supercars.

The camouflage motif strap has a quick release system that allows for a quick change: to create this design it was necessary to vulcanize together different colored plates using a specific process that requires a time 30% longer than that required for a normal strap . U-Boat to New York with two special pieces

The U-Boat American Corporation is the company created by the Italian group which will have the task of distributing the brand’s watches in the States, with its own organization. For this purpose, the company has opened an office in New York City, on Madison Avenue. But there is also news for U-Boat timepiece enthusiasts: the company has presented a limited edition watch, indeed very limited, with a bronze and a silver specimen. The case is a small sculpture with a bas-relief of the city skyline. Italo Fontana’s watch brand thus manages to bring Made in Tuscany to the USA with an iconic piece.

The case of the watches dedicated to New York is 45 millimeters and has been engraved by hand to reproduce the Brooklyn Bridge in relief on one side and the skyline and the Empire State Building on the other. The Statue of Liberty is laser engraved on the screw-down case back, while a rose-cut black diamond with a carat weight of between 1.30 and 2.00 is set in the crown on the left side in both versions.

There are not only wristwatches. Tiffany, for example, has unveiled a new series of mechanical table clocks, inspired by its tradition of manufacturing trophies for car races and its traditional experience of collaboration with the Swiss watch industry. Time for Speed table clocks are made of aluminum, finished in the color of the Maison, the classic Tiffany Blue. The design of the watches is instead inspired by that of 1950s racing cars. The Maison presented a standard edition and two limited editions of these table clocks: one limited edition available exclusively at the Japanese stores Tiffany & Co., the other for the rest of the world. The limited edition table clocks available globally are decorated with 316 diamonds, totaling over 19 carats. Each wheel has a single diamond of approximately one carat at its center. The limited edition available only in Japan instead includes 192 diamonds including a pavé in the center of each wheel.

The watches have characteristics that can entice collectors. The tires of each watch-car, which weighs around 4 kilos, are made of resistant rubber, while the rims have polished steel spokes. Whether it’s summer or winter, the sea is always fascinating. Also for watchmaking. Nautica, a brand born in 1983 as a clothing line, which has made its way into the world of watchmaking, chooses a new beach for the Koh May Bay watch collection, the famous beach in Thailand.
Koh May Bay watches have a steel case with an octagonal bezel and rounded corners. On the dial, large luminescent indexes are designed to maximize legibility.

The model with black dial is offered in a set that allows you to change the silicone strap for a steel bracelet and vice versa to experience the timepiece in different ways: sporty and suitable for the aquatic environment, or more urban and elegant. Who said the clock is outdated? The numbers indicate the opposite, at least according to data relating to the Swiss watch industry contained in the ninth report Deloitte Swiss Watch Industry Study 2022: sales with e-commerce will double by 2030, and are 35 billion Swiss francs (as of moment the exchange rate is approximately at par with the euro and the dollar) of worldwide growth in the second-hand market. The survey was conducted among 70 senior watch industry executives and nearly 6,000 consumers in Switzerland, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, UAE, UK and USA .

Deloitte’s analysis underlines some interesting aspects: the majority (57%) of the executives of the Swiss watch industry interviewed expect a positive 2023 for the sector, even if in decline. But as of early 2022, more than three-quarters (77%) of executives predicted a rosy outlook. Furthermore, nearly 80% of watch industry executives say that geopolitical uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine and tensions between China and the United States is negatively impacting the company’s outlook.

The United States continues to be the most important country for the Swiss watch industry in terms of export volumes (77% still expect growth), but India and China are gaining weight. However, expectations are different: for Hong Kong, the decline or stagnation is expected to continue, while only 57% of those interviewed believe that the market in China will grow.

The time of e-commerce
According to the report, 40% of consumers and 45% of respondents under the age of 40 are the most likely to buy online. The majority of Swiss watch industry executives believe that traditional stores will continue to be the most important sales platform in the foreseeable future. In Italy, for example, the shop remains the preferred place for 61% of consumers, but in Anglo-Saxon, Asian and even United Arab countries buying a watch online is increasingly popular.

With two in five consumers preferring to buy their watches online, it is imperative that brands expand e-commerce channels and expand their already rich offline offering to meet customer expectations. According to our estimates, the share of watches purchased online is set to double to 30% by 2030.

Watches are always an investment
The report confirms the widespread opinion that a good watch is also an investment. 23% of consumers buy watches with the idea of reselling them: the business is especially popular in Singapore (33%), Hong Kong (32%) and China (29%). This also explains why consumers in some Asian markets are willing to spend more on new watches. In China, for example, more than a third (35%) say they are willing to shell out 5,000 Swiss francs or more for a new watch, while paradoxically in the home of watchmaking, Switzerland, the percentage drops to 8% and in France only 2%. Consumers who buy a watch as an investment obviously intend to sell it at a higher price (36%), but they also see watches as a way to diversify their portfolio (33%). Among the latter, Chinese consumers seem to be the most interested (55%).

The used market
Sales have inevitably created a parallel market: a third of customers (31%) expect to buy a second-hand watch in the next year and companies are creating their own second-hand sales channels. Second-hand watches are increasingly popular, especially among millennials and generation Z: 48% of younger respondents are interested in a pre-owned branded timepiece, obviously because the price is lower (44%) than new, but also because a discontinued model can be found (29%). Not to mention that there are those (21%) who consider buying a second-hand watch for environmental reasons.

The growth of the used watch market does not worry the producers: 70% of the managers interviewed consider this phenomenon positive because it positively influences the perception and value of the brand. Deloitte expects the current market size of approximately 20 billion Swiss francs to continue to grow significantly over the next few years, to nearly 35 billion Swiss francs by the end of the decade, becoming more than half that to the new watch market.

The temptation to buy a branded watch at a ridiculous price is strong. When visiting countries such as China, but also in many Western countries, albeit to varying degrees, offers of prestigious timepieces costing a few hundred (sometimes tens) of euros, dollars or pounds are not uncommon. How to recognize a fake watch?

Even materials and colors have always been very indicative of both the quality of a product and its originality. Furthermore, a check of the technical characteristics is essential: in fact, fakes rarely have the same characteristics as the originals. These are details that, however, are not always easy to identify. Also because today the advances in technology help forgers, who have reached a very high level of skill and make timepieces that are increasingly similar to the originals. There is also another aspect to check: the guarantee, signed and stamped by the authorized dealer, and the serial number, essential for certifying the originality of the timepiece.
