A deep blue diamond of 5.30 carats, set in a ring, has been sold in London for 6.2 million pounds (about 7.3 million euros), setting a new record per carat, according to the house of ‘Bonhams auctions. The ring, made by Bulgari, reached 1.8 million dollars per carat (about 1.4 million euros), beating the previous record for a blue diamond of 1.68 million dollars, also per carat. It was purchased by London jeweler Graff Diamonds. The ring was estimated at between £1 million and £1.5 million. Deep blue diamonds are very rare according to Bonhams. The most famous is the Hope diamond, purchased by King Louis XIV. Ancient jewel of the Crown of France, the 45.52-carat stone, discovered in a mine in India, was stolen during the Revolution in 1792. After wandering around the world, Hope is now exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution, a museum in Washington.
