In Florence, jewels in art

Jewels are a form of craftsmanship that approaches art. In fact, sometimes they truly become works of art. And it is no coincidence that jewels have been protagonists in various forms in the history of culture. For this reason, from March 26, the event “Jewelry Wednesdays in Art” returns to Florence, a series of conferences organized by Lao, Le Arti Orafe Jewellery School, together with the Marino Marini Museum and Oma, Observatory for the Art Crafts of the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze and in collaboration with the FiorGen Foundation. The conferences are curated by Maria Cristina Bergesio and, to enrich this year’s program, there will be Philip Sajet and Xavier Ines Monclùs, two of the artists who in recent years have participated in Preziosa, an international event organized by Lao. For four Wednesdays, the Marino Marini Museum will host free-entry meetings (but reservations are required), during which Maria Cristina Bergesio will offer an overview of the role of jewelry in art, from antiquity to Postmodernism. The two invited artists will speak at two of these meetings, illustrating their personal vision of contemporary goldsmithing and presenting their work.
Sajet combines precious stones and metals with everyday materials such as glass and enamel. Xavier Ines Monclùs’s jewelry, on the other hand, is inspired by everyday objects, with fun inventions bordering on wearability, with clear Dadaist, Surrealist, Constructivist and Pop Art inspirations.
