Coral for four generations grown in the Neapolitan pole of this art: Aucella has been part of this elite for eighty years. In Torre del Greco, home of the goldsmith tradition that focuses on the red fruit of the sea, the Aucella family has worked among corals, cameos and jewels from 1930 to today. And in the spring of 2019 Vincenzo Aucella was elected president of Assocoral, the Italian association that brings together producers of coral and cameos jewelry. Aucella’s define their passion, with an ironic habit (typical of the Neapolitans), “a mysterious disease”.

Fortunately, the cure for this mysterious disease has not been found, and the history of these coral specialists, born when this marine material was still found in the Gulf of Naples, has yet to end. The coral is worked smooth or engraved, for jewelry or cameos. The jewels, originally created on customer request, are now enriched with natural stones, diamonds, South Sea pearls and Tahiti. But alongside the unique pieces, the brand also inaugurated a less demanding line of products, in silver, with the name 925byAucella. Those you see below, however, combine coral with gold, diamonds and precious stones. In addition to coral, Aucella also produces cameos. Among the specialties of the house there is also the making of cameos starting from a photograph: much better than a selfie.

Among the Italian jewelers who fly from one international fair to another there is also Confuorto. A brand that has long been operating in the world of jewelry and, to be precise, in the goldsmith district born, raised and developed around Torre del Greco, near Naples. It is the great school of workshops where coral is still carved, cameos are created, and people often work with the techniques of a hundred years ago. Even if Confuorto has a relatively recent history: the company was born, in fact, in 1987.

Confuorto immediately specialized in the production of 925 silver jewelry: earrings, rings, pendants, brooches worked by hand and machine with coral, cameos, natural stones. The style is the most traditional you can find, often in a pure vintage atmosphere: alongside coral, worked with the craftsmanship typical of the area, Michela Confuorto combines pearls, turquoise and colored stones, in rich compositions that add to tradition the fantasy that in Naples it never fails, not even in the most classic jewelry.

Italian tradition, indeed, Neapolitan to be precise. But with a home in London. This is the story of Cameo & Beyond, a company founded in 2015 by Francesco Paolillo and his wife Soraya. The origins of cammetane have not been forgotten: when a cam a half century ago, Giovanni, and his mother, Ermelinda, started making porcelain cameos. A material different from the usual one (shells or easily carved stones such as agate). The idea was successful. However, the cameo style remained pure, with white figures with a classic shape, such as cherubs and mythological figures, which stand out against a solid color background, set on a silver or vermeil frame.

Francesco Paolillo developed the idea by adding his own taste. He studied at the Venice School of Art in the mid-1980s, and worked in the art, antiques and later vintage jewelry sectors for major brands in New York, London and Paris. The meeting with his wife, Soraya, born in Paris, trained as a journalist to then land in the world of jewelry, created the Cameo & Beyond team, together with his sister Margherita, who takes care of the atelier in Venice, where they are produced the cameos, while the company’s headquarters and design studio remain in the British capital.

After the death in June 2020 of his childhood friend and partner Roberto Faraone Mennella, Amedeo Scognamiglio resumed work. He also took note of the change in consumption caused by the covid and pushed the accelerator on online sales. His brand, Amedeo, is known all over the world and this made it easier. He himself took care of the functionality of the website that sells his jewelry online, which transformed the traditional art of the cameo into a modern and cool piece of jewelry.

Amedeo, in fact, chose to make cameos using the ancient art of stone or shell carving, but combined with the choice of depicting bees, skulls or the three wise monkeys of the Japanese tradition. Raised in Torre del Greco (Naples, Italy), which is the world capital of the cameo, the jeweler soon learned the art of making this type of jewel, thanks to the teachings of his father, also a jeweler. In 2006 he opened Amedeo, a boutique in the elegant Upper East Side of New York, followed by another opening on the island of Capri.

In times when migration involves millions of people, even with dramatic aspects, we forget that the movement of people from one continent to the other is not new. In the past two centuries, for example, Italy has been a country from which thousands of thousands of people started looking for luck. Among them was also the Mazza family, a specialist in goldsmith’s work in Torre del Greco, near Naples. It is known that specialists in the art of working coral and cameos have grown and still live in this small area.

Starting from 1840, the Mazza family also worked coral and mother of pearl for cameos. Founded in 1864, the family moved to the United States, to New York. Louis Mazza continued the work with the help of his four children. The third son, William, in particular, in 1970 produced his first collection for I. Magnum & Co. and Bergdorf Goodman under the name of Mazza. Today the family is in its fifth generation and William is joined by his three sons William jr, Jeffrey and Steven. The story continues, still with coral and, of course, with other techniques that have added to the starting one.

A century to celebrate. In 2019 Coscia celebrates its 100th anniversary and the Torre del Greco company has decided to celebrate the event at VicenzaOro September with a special event (which includes an exhibition of the company’s iconic pieces), Sunday 8 September. There are not many jewelry houses that can boast a similar longevity, obtained thanks to the entrepreneurial ability and creativity of the family that has been interpreting the jewel for three generations. Pearls, cameos and corals are the distinctive elements of the Coscia brand, founded in 1919 by the progenitor Vincenzo, in Torre del Greco, the city that is still today a center for the processing of coral and cameo.

In the 1980s, thanks to Giancarlo Coscia, Vincenzo’s nephew and current patron, the company extended its offer to cultivated pearls, another trademark of the Maison. For this reason, after the transfer of the company to the Il Tarì goldsmith center, Coscia’s «O» was replaced by the image of a pearl in the company logo. The company’s success has given reason to this choice.

Japan is the country with which Coscia maintains the major commercial relations and which has recognized a coveted certificate that certifies the relationship of close and loyal collaboration with the association of Japanese Pearl Exporters (Jpea). Giancarlo Coscia, since 2012, is an associate member.

It is good that a country cultivate their traditions. In Italy the areas where are focused all the jewelry productions are four: Vicenza, Valenza, Arezzo and the area of Naples-Torre del Greek. Many companies in the latter area were later transferred to the center of Tari, name of the currency used in the ancient Maritime Republic of Amalfi, which was chosen as the name for this confederation of jewelry artisans on the outskirts of Caserta. Among them it is also Carada, a name chosen from a family who traditions knows very well: Ciro Schiavo. The small company born in the fifties in Torre del Greco and named after the founder. Like other companies with similar traditions, even Ciro Schiavo is a master in the engravings that are used to create elaborate cameos. His sons, Mario and Tommaso Schiavo, continued on the road begun by their father, but with the new Carada brand. Rainbow Pom Pom for Pomellato

It has been so successful the 40th anniversary collection that, after 2007 Pomellato has transformed the fine jewelry Pom Pom in a recurring event. And this year presents new chains links for 11 bracelets with rainbow colors: blue, purple and pink sapphire, tanzanite, aquamarine, tourmaline, canary and rarer Paraiba tourmaline, mandarin garnet, red spinel, tsavorite and emerald, all stones in various sizes set in such a way as to create an unusual pavé. A tecnique wich is more intricate in the knot ring where tourmaline, red spinel and sapphire running from pink to purple. The rose gold setting with four prongs that really look like the claws of a cat and cabochon cut stone distinguish aquamarine, chrysoprase and chalcedony rings, surrounded by brown diamonds and other gems. Finally, a classic revisited: the cameo shell by craftsmen from Torre del Greco, in asiatic version.
