A porcelain chain around the neck? Well yes, according to Olivia Monti Arduini. Of course, the material is unusual, but what is most surprising is the contrast between the substance, traditional but in this case innovative, and the shape, which has now become a classic. In short, what is usual becomes something new and vice versa in the objects created by Olivia. The Italian designer studied sculpture in London and over the years developed a passion for ceramics before choosing porcelain for her creations. Light, but resistant, they have a matte finish that makes the whole harmonious, even in large necklaces like the one with which she won the 2014 edition of Gioielli in fermento. For those who want to learn the technique, next August Olivia will hold a course in turning, inlay and neriage (mixing clays of different colors), she will teach how to smooth the material (burnishing) how to use molds and pigments, and above all how to design and assemble the various pieces to make a jewel. The place is not around the corner, but it is suggestive and perfect for a holiday: Ubud the cultural center of the island of Bali, in Indonesia.
