However, as on other occasions, there is a link with the original activity of Dior, clothing. The jewels, in fact, are made with a thought to the lace technique, which gives lightness, but also extreme industriousness in the composition, with a thought to the creations of the founder, Christian Dior. Gold is often woven into a kind of filigree, but gems are also set in a puzzle that makes up the surfaces, or figures such as flowers. The jewels are also embellished with gems such as diamonds, rubies, tourmalines, sapphires of different colors, pearls, which often appear to be suspended without the setting being seen.

Andrea Fohrman, the first designer on the moon

Andrea Fohrman: the moon is a precious satellite in Los Angeles designer collections ♦︎

She is one of the few women who do not are offend if someone tells her that she is lunatic. For a simple reason: she adores the moon and the Earth’s pale satellite is a source of inspiration for her jewels. The story of Andrea Fohrman as designer is started with admiration of the grandmother’s cocktail ring, the passion for the weather, seasons, and stages of the year. Which are marked, in fact, by the alternation of moons. Andrea Fohrman is so fascinated by Earth’s twin, that on her website you are able to calculate the lunar phase that corresponds to an important date in her life.

The art of jewelery was also improved in Italy, in Florence, where she also studied design and sculpture. She started her activity collecting ancient objects and turned them into pendants. Then, in 2004, she pulled the shot up to the high-end jewelery, that she designs in her Los Angeles home.

Ileana Makri’s golden Cascade

Her bracelet from the Cascade Collection won the Couture Award 2022 in the Best in Gold Jewelry category. It is an imposing jewel, obviously in 18-karat gold, which is inspired by the shiny jewels of the roaring twenties. It has a square white diamond in the center. The rest of the extensive Cascade collection by Ileana Makri also follows the same style, adding references to the fluidity of water, which meets the geometry that precedes the art deco style. Alongside 18-karat gold and diamonds, jewels are often combined with emeralds, with some variations in rubies and sapphires. Earrings, necklaces and bracelets are the most present shapes in the line, even if there are rings, quite simple.

Yeprem’s Couture jewels

If you still think that wearing jewelry is the same as putting a ring on your finger, wearing earrings, showing off a necklace or surrounding your wrist with a bracelet, you are left behind. The world is running and jewelry is evolving, even the high-end one. Proof of this is Yeprem, a high jewelery Maison that has long since embarked on a new path, as in its Couture line. Alongside traditional jewels, Yeprem proposes compositions of white gold and diamonds that embrace parts of the body with unusual shapes and aesthetic effect. They are defined as “jewels for the hand” in the case of pieces intended to cross the back and appear on the palm.

As for the earrings, even Yeprem has chosen to evolve them into one of the many new shapes that have met the favor of the public. And bracelets are no longer just a circle that is worn at the end of the wrist, but jewels that snake around the arm and hand, with surprising autonomy. The jewels also increase the sensation of movement thanks to the dual choice of diamond cut, brilliant and marquise.

Kuwayama to discover

Kuwayama is a large Japanese jewelry company. It’s time to learn something about it ♦

In Europe many identify Japan with the auto or technology industry. It is commonplace: Japan also has, for example, a tradition in jewelry. Kuwayama is, perhaps, the best known name, also for the size of the company, which is even listed on the stock exchange. Founded by Yukihiro Kuwayama in Sumida-ku, Tokyo, in 1970, the company immediately saw the jewelry from a very industrial point of view, with factories in China and Thailand, as well as Japan.

Born to work precious metals, the company has grown and evolved, to become a consolidated brand also in the design of the jewels, as demonstrated by the numerous international awards (33 at the moment) won by Kuwayama, the latest as Manufacturer of the year at the JNA Awards 2018 in Hong Kong Jewelery & Gem Fair in 2019. The company also has a branch also in Europe, in the capital of diamonds, Antwerp. The jewels offered by the Japanese house are the most varied: from collections with diamonds and semi-precious stones, to lines that are based on Swarovski gems. But most of the production is reserved for other jewelry brands, which use elements such as metal chains.

Geometrical Cadar

The geometries by Cadar: here is the Maison who won the Couture Design ♦ ︎

In 2016, Fashion Group International had named Cadar as the Rising Star of jewelery. And in 2017, the New York brand won the Couture Design Awards as Best in Gold at its second appearance in Las Vegas and in 2018 it was the turn of the Gold Design of the Year at the Town & Country Magazine Jewelry Awards. Where will goes the maison created by Michal Kadar, former fashion designer in Tel Aviv and art scholar, come? The designer’s second life in the Big Apple seems a triumphal march. But creating objects in three dimensions is not new to her. Her father was a sculptor and Michal picked up shells for him, that he then used for his works.

But her cultural background also includes the simplicity of Japanese tradition, the mystery of the North African desert and the Florentine Renaissance: not by chance a part of the processing of her jewels is made in Italy. Unlike other designers, the Cadar’s founder chose a rigorous and precise style: gold, with some small contour diamonds. But the geometry and the volumes of jewels are the ones that distinguish the style of the little Maison. Simple but very effective shapes, combined with the ability to create easily wearable jewels.

Baiyang on the fancy wire

/

The intricate draws of jewelry designed by Baiyang Qiu, a goldsmith of Chinese origin who works in the United States ♦

The roads of design run more and more globally: fantasy has no boundaries. And it does not even have Baiyang Qiu, a goldsmith of Chinese origin who works in the United States, in San Jose, California. Despite being active only for a few years, she has already received several awards (the latest at the Couture Show in Las Vegas 2016) and her work has been described in numerous publications, including the book «The Art of Jewelry: plastic and resin».

Orecchini cubici in oro 18 carati e diamanti
Orecchini cubici in oro 18 carati e diamanti

Baiyang Qiu has a very personal style: all the jewels are made using very fine gold or platinum, which form jewels that seem wrapped in a spider’s web. In order to make these jewels both light and strong, and to take surfaces of unprecedented curves, Baiyang uses a combination of traditional methods and new technologies. The design of such jewels, on the other hand, can only come first through software and special precision instruments. In short, the mechanics subject to the imagination, but capable of giving dreams and reflections that the normal craft work can not achieve. And also this is jewelry design.

Journey into matter with Emanuela Duca

//

Emanuela Duca and her jewels with roots in Rome and work in New York, between the call of the earth and fantasy.

From Rome to New York: a journey that millions of tourists and a few designers travel. Among these, there is Emanuela Duca, who from the capital of Italy has moved permanently to the capital of the American East Coast, New York, indeed, Manhattan and, now in the Hudson Valley. Even if she now lives and works in the Big Apple, she keeps her roots in the artistic culture of the Peninsula and often returns to Rome, where she followed her training path. She graduated from the Art School of Rome, and then from the European Institute of Design. Not only that: in addition to jewelry, Emanuela was involved in dance, painting and sculpture. Almost a Renaissance artist, when the divisions between the different artistic skills were subtle.

The jewels of her new Colibrì collection retain his style and the echo of her origin: works that evoke volcanic ash and the ancient ruins of his Rome. But transformed by the efficient New York air. In short, almost a bridge between antiquity and modernity. The jewels are first carved in wax, then forged with sterling silver and 18-carat yellow gold, shaped and manipulated until they find the right shape. Her technique is so personal that her jewels have also been exhibited and sold at the Smithsonian, the Philadelphia Museum of Arts Crafts or the Museum of Art and Design in New York.

The cultural bridge of Sethi Couture

/

Sethi is a common surname in northern India and Pakistani. The word derives from Sreshta which means pure or superior in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language. Following (perhaps) this principle, the two Californian sisters Pratima and Prerna, with their Sethi Couture, have tried to reunite the jewelry made in the USA with its roots in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Rajasthan, in particular, is famous for its goldsmith tradition. The combination of Indian gold and minimal western style has turned into many stackable rings, earrings and bracelets.

Anello in oro bianco 18 carati e diamanti
Anello in oro bianco 18 carati e diamanti

As often happens, the two young Indo-Californians tried different paths before finding their way into jewelry. Pratima, after an MBA he started his career in a luxury brand. Prerna studied architecture and then worked for the clothing industry. But another detail must be added to the story: the Pratima and Prerna family trades in diamonds and precious stones. In short, the landing in jewelry is part of the roots of the house. In short, diamonds are not lacking in the collection of Sethi Couture. In addition, alongside motifs inspired by the nature of California, references to traditional Indian architecture also appear in the Maison’s jewels. In short, a bridge that crosses the ocean.

The Orient by Buddha Mama

The Buddhism joins with jewelery in the original collections of Buddha Mama ♦ ︎
The way of meditation can lead to unexpected goals. For those who are involved in this philosophical-spiritual practice, meditation is a way to elevate oneself, to understand oneself, or just to live more serene. For the Buddhists meditation is something more. But, by surprise, it can even bring you to the jewelery. This is the case of Buddha Mama, a line of handmade jewelry, inspired Buddhism and Oriental traditions. Everything started at the kitchen table, searching for funds dedicated to his local Buddhist center, Zen Village in Miami. Nancy Badia then began to wire beads and make necklaces and bracelets.

One thing led to another…  After 25 years, Nancy and her husband have decided to think great, but without abandoning the ideals of youth. Buddha Mama is the brand born under the signs of Buddhism and Jewelery, so much that he participated at Couture in Las Vegas. Waiting for the spirit of purity, the designer proposes rings, bracelets and necklaces of exuberant forms, deliberately oriental, but with an all-American liveliness. Gold, lacquer and precious stones are the elements used for jewelery collections that remind us the origins of the Maison in a Coachella-style.

Christina Alexiou on the moon

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 was the space flight to land a man on the moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle and Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the Moon’s surface. A historic moment for humanity and an important date for jewelry as well. Celebrating that event is now the collection that Christina Alexiou presented at the Couture in Las Vegas.

Bracciale de Lunar Eclipse, in oro, diamanti, zaffiri

The collection consists of earrings, rings, necklace and bracelets but, above all, translates the surface of our satellite into jewels. Slightly irregular gold spheres, with lunar craters composed of precious stones: white or brown diamonds, but also blue and pink sapphires, emeralds peek out from the surface of the Moon in a jewel version. In some pieces, in addition to the lunar spheres, the classic shape of the crescent is also used, which perhaps the astronauts have never seen, but those who wear the jewels do.

Anna Maccieri Rossi by night and by day

//

There are refined watches that provide the Day & Night display, so as to immediately distinguish the phases of the day. Anna Maccieri Rossi spent many years dealing with luxury watches, the dark side of the Force (let’s joke) before moving on to jewelry. Perhaps it is the memories of the years behind that inspired the new Night & Day collection, which she presented at the Couture in Las Vegas. It is a line of jewels that keeps intact the style and technique adopted by the designer, who not surprisingly uses details that are part of the watchmaking tradition, starting with the dials.

Collana Night & Day, in oro, turchese, madreperla

The Night & Day collection features two different colors, with a preference for blue and light blue to indicate the night, while for the day side the shades become more lively. Reversible jewels that can be worn on one side or the other, in tune with the hours of the day or more simply with your mood. Alongside gold, the designer uses materials such as mother of pearl, turquoise, pink jade, lapis lazuli, aventurine, malachite, tiger’s eye for rings, necklaces, pendants.

The winners of the 2022 Couture Design Awards

Every year the Couture in Las Vegas stops with bated breath: who is the winners of the Couture Design Awards? The award ceremony, which this year was decided by a jury composed of Nikos Koulis, Juliet de La Rouchefoucauld, Tanika Winsdom, Diana Schade and Stellene Volandes, is one of the highlights of the event in the capital of Nevada. All the pieces participating in the design competition are exhibited days in advance and everyone wonders who, in the end, will be awarded.

The winners, at the end, are announced during the celebration of the Couture Design Awards on Saturday night. In addition to those indicated by the jury, the community of retailers votes for the three finalists of the Peoples’ Choice Award via SMS. Among the winners, this year there are also two Italian jewelers: Gismondi 1754 and Mariani 1878: both with roots that sink into history, in short.

Best in Diamonds above $ 20,000: Gismondi 1754
Gismondi 1754 was awarded the prize, collected by Massimo Gismondi, creative director and CEO, for his necklace, Raggio di Sole, a unique piece inspired by the early morning sun. The Italian Maison was also a finalist for the People’s Choice Award. Gismondi had already won the Couture Award in 2019 for his necklace from the Essenza Collection from which the earring was also born. The Raggio di Sole series required over 600 hours of work for six months. It is composed of 27.83 carats of pear-cut white diamonds and 16.04 carats of fancy yellow diamonds.The jewel, together with the bracelet and earrings, were completed shortly before Couture. The ring will complete the collection. Raggio di Sole was inspired, in 2020 during the lockdown, one early morning in a chalet in Valtournenche (Alps, Italy) in front of a coffee while the sun rose behind the mountain top. The necklace is his interpretation of the first rays that create a crown behind the mountain as it began to light up the sky.

Born in Armenia to a family of jewelers, Mike spent every spare moment of his formative years among jewelry. After a multi-year apprenticeship, studying in different cities, he concentrated on how to translate fantasy into practice. Finally, the designer opened his factory with his brother Joseph. And this explains the name of the brand, which sells all over the world, but is based in Bangkok. The fine workmanship of the 18-karat gold, which transforms the jewelry into objects with a light design, is the characteristic of Mike Josehp Jewllery, with fringes and geometric volumes studded with diamonds.

A cascade of diamonds with Yeprem

/

There are Maison that have been offering the same jewels for decades. Legitimate. But there are others that amaze with special effects. And they really are very special when it comes to fine jewelry. One of these brands is Yeprem, born in Beirut, but active on the international market with jewels that challenge even a sheikh’s bank account. In particular, Yeprem is famous for its diamond jewelry. And they are jewels that often break the mold, as evidenced by the new pieces presented at the same time as the Paris Couture week.

A jewel undoubtedly out of the ordinary is the Claw ring. Forget the classic diamond ring: this is a real claw with five bands of gold covered with diamonds that sparkle on the back of the hand. A jewel with an aggressive design. On the contrary, the Crown tiara suggests a romantic and, inevitably, luxurious atmosphere. Among the new proposals for high jewelery there is also a necklace with diamonds and emeralds with a collar. Also in this case the jewel suggests a classic and refined feeling thanks to the 1341 precious stones used, of which 52.98 carats of round cut diamonds, 30.43 marquise cut diamonds, in addition to the 4.93 carat emerald. Jewels that also enchanted Jennifer Lopez, who performed on stage with Yeprem jewels during the special concert for the film she stars in, Marry Me.

Harika’s geometries

/

In 2006 she was in New York representing a Turkish designer. A role that, however, was tight for Harika Ustaoglu. So she decided it was time to launch herself into the world of jewelry. The Istanbul designer, who lives and works in the American city, created her own line of jewelry and, in 2014, a brand that has her name: Harika. She took the first steps thanks to the goldsmiths of the Turkish city, in charge of translating the designs of her collections into gold and precious stones, until she found support directly in the USA.

The jewelry design is very modern and undoubtedly original: very geometric shapes, very modern and abstract, with designs that are inspired, she says, even by details captured as she walks the streets of the city. The stones are also cut in an unusual way. The jewels are made of 14 and 18 karat gold and use diamonds of every color, as well as stones such as aquamarine, sapphire, beryl, quartz. A bracelet of hers made it to the Couture finalists in the diamonds under $ 20K category.

Mariani 1878, an encore a century and a half long

//

In 2017 it won the Design Couture Awards in Las Vegas in the People’s choise category. And in 2021 Mariani 1878 did it again, this time in the Best in Gold category. The Maison based in Monza, a town a stone’s throw from Milan, is preparing to celebrate 150 years of a life full of awards, which testify to a goldsmith’s skill across the board. The previous prize, for example, was awarded thanks to Pon Pon, a three-dimensional drop pendant with 27 carats of very high quality diamonds. in the jewel each diamond was set individually and inserted in a sort of network that surrounds the central solitaire.

A jewel, the one presented at the Couture, which seems to have also enticed Melania Trump, at the time first lady with domicile in the White House. On the other hand, Mariani jewels in the US have also convinced celebrities Sylvester Stallone and Denzel Washington, in the mood for gifts to their partners.

Four years later, however, it was been a pair of long earrings with a burnished gold and diamond link that convinced the jury. The Maison, as its name indicates, was founded in 1878 and is managed by the brothers Carlo and Federico Mariani, graduates in economics and masters in gemology, under the guidance of their father Giuseppe Mariani, direct descendant of the founder Camillo Mariani.

Onirikka’s Precious Dreams

///

The dream: from Shakespeare and Freud, from Emperor Constantine to Harry Potter, the images that crowd the imagination during the night can affect life and even history. Gloria Rank, the designer who founded Onirikka, knows it well. The name of the brand, in fact, derives from the word oniric, that is, concerning dreams. And, since in a dream you can wish for everything, Gloria dreamed of arriving among the finalists at the Design Couture Awards. Dream that came true, in the Best in Silver category, although Onirikka’s jewels are mostly created in gold, diamonds, stones and enamel. As in the Citron collection which uses colored sapphires, garnets and tsavorites.

Indeed, the story of Onirikka seems like a dream. Gloria Rank was born in Salvador, but she studied design at Le Arti Orafe in Florence, where she refined her compositional technique for jewelery. She returned to Salvador, got married, gave birth to two children and took a crash course in jewelry design at Gia in New York. Her first collection is from 2011, and was sold privately in El Salvador. Then, the designer launched the brand in the final at the Las Vegas fair.
