Ananya’s design

Ananya’s jewels, one of the best Indian designers who came to the Couture ♦ ︎

She surprised everyone at the Couture Design Awards 2019, where she was among the finalists in the Best in Debuting category. Indiana, born into a family deeply rooted in the fashion industry, Ananya Malhotra studied the world of jewelry in London, where she graduated from Central Saint Martins, but also in the US at Gia. The studies in London get it clear why her jewels are not only part of the highest category, but also because they are designed in a style that celebrates Indian craftsmanship with Western taste. Abundant, but not opulent. But does not wonder that the designer also considers her jewels as talismans endowed with energy, in pure Indian spiritualism.

Before being get up at Couture in Las Vegas, Ananya was awarded the Suffragettes Design Award, where she designed a pin for women scientists and Nobel Prize winners. She was also chosen by Swarovski to design a piece for the Runway Rocks fashion show. And before debuting with her Maison, Ananya, the designer worked for one of India’s largest jewelers, Amrapali. She is inspired, she says, by Art Nouveau and surrealism, a pictorial current that fascinates her also thanks to her studies in the field of psychology. One of her latest works is the customizable Chakra collection. It is made up of wearable, stackable and colorful jewels.

The brushstroke by Carelle

/

With Carelle a collection as soft as the brushstroke of an artist on a canvas ♦

It is been the first jewelery company that was certified as “Made in New York”. Yet he has a French name. Carelle, in fact, is the contraction of two words of the language of Moliere and Victor Hugo: car elle, that is, “because her”. Also the name of the designer who founded the Maison in the 1970s is vaguely exotic: Chana Regev. She represents the fourth generation of an active family especially in diamond trading and long time been based in the American city.

Anello della Whirl collection
Anello della Whirl collection

In addition to the pret à porter collections, Carelle also offers custom made jewelery, with some large stones (and prices). But at the Couture in Las Vegas Carelle presented the new Brushstroke collection. The shape of gold jewels suggests, in fact, the fluid mark of an artist’s brushstroke on a canvas. In some pieces, yellow diamonds are added to small diamonds. Rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings reveal a non-usual softness in the jewelery world. The prices of the Brushstroke collection are variable as a sign of a brush: ranging from 595 to $ 7,150.

The surprising pearls of Yvel

/

Yvel creates jewelry in which the pearl is always at the center, but the variety is amazing. In 2017 it won a Couture Design Awards in the Best in Pearls category for a remarkable Baroque pearl ring ♦

Yvel was founded in 1986 by Isaac and Orna Levy. Note the name: Levy is the contrary of Yvel. But in reality there is nothing strange: Orna and Isaac simply continue an ancient tradition of family. But, in particular, they are specialized in a pearl jewelry. “A word of advice: choose the color. Beyond the classic shades of white, pearls come in a palette of delicious colors, by the mysterious dark gray to golden green, until the sparkling champagne tone.

There is certainly a shade to match perfectly every skin, mood and style, “says Isaac. The beads, together with gold and precious stones, are worked and proposals in an amazing variety of shapes and shades. If the spherical shape is perfect, Yvel can change them it with an exuberant imagination. Their design has found legions of admirers. Thus, even if the House is based in Tel Aviv, the Yvel jewelry can be found in more than 600 upscale shops in the five continents, as well as in boutiques in Israel and the United States, in Miami. Two exemples: the Biwa collection takes its name from the lake in Japan known for its incredibly bright pearls until 1985, when the farming has ceased due to pollution. The New York of Rina Limor

/

x

The couture jewels (and beyond) by Rina Limor, a New York designer who was inspired by Dolce Vita.

As it says Dolce Vita in New York? To find out, the jewelry designer Rina Limor in the seventies has spent long periods in Italy. But, besides admiring the Tuscan landscape, the artistic beauty of the city (and, hopefully, also the kitchen), she has occupied the time by contacting material manufacturers for jewelery, goldsmiths, setters, and so on. The pleasure of the style of Italy’s pleasure-loving, along with her creativity and to the American taste for conspicuous jewelry, has created the style of Rina Limor, now established signature in the panorama of the New York luxury. His proposal is quite wide, ranging from tubogas bracelets or large chains, spare special couture line.

Emeralds, rubies, diamonds and Paraiba tourmalines are used unsparingly. As in jewelry made with a cluster of stones, in some cases cut with fancy shapes, that is, outside of the traditional standards. The effect is unusual, but pleasant. Prices, of course, are what you can expect for luxury jewelry in New York. Giulia Netrese

Passion and Mont Blanc in the new Buccellati high jewelery

/

The passion of the Buccellati Maison consists in proposing a style that is renewed over time, but is always faithful to its origins. So it is perhaps not surprising that one of the pieces that attracted the most attention in the new high jewelery collection presented during Paris Couture Week 2021 is called Passion. It is a ring in white and yellow gold, with a 10.72 carat rubellite and diamonds. In the same collection, another creation that sparked the imagination is, instead, the Polvere di Luna set, which includes a necklace combined with light pendants.

Anello Passione, in oro bianco e giallo, rubellite di 10,72 carati

The style is the unmistakable one of the Maison founded by Mario Buccellati a little over a century ago and now directed from the creative point of view by Andrea Buccellati (the property is instead of the Richemont group). Another piece in full Buccellati-style is the Mont Blanc ring, which replaces the snow on the summit with a pearl that rises from a zigzag design surrounding the yellow gold bezel. It goes without saying that the classic embroidery of bracelets, earrings and necklaces is not lacking. On the other hand, it is the Maison’s factory stamp.

A lollipop for Retrouvaì

New Los Angeles-based Canadian designer jewelry Kirsty Surian with her Retrouvaí

The designer debuted four years ago and has already attended Las Vegas Couture. She wastes no time. The jewelry runner is Kirsty Surian and works in Los Angeles, but she is Canadian from Toronto. With a grandmother stylist for a large commercial chain and another grandmother who collected semi-precious stones and amber, she started architecture.

Anello Lollipop con turchese e tanzanite

But after working in a design studio, she was lucky enough to find those who taught her the secrets of jewelry production and founded her own small jewelery house. Which has a really unusual name: it’s called Retrouvaí and is pronounced in English with Reh-tro-v-eye. The word derives from the French name Retrovailles, a word that indicates the joy of getting back in touch with something from one’s past. The name certainly stands out from the rest. And the jewels? The collections already have a well-defined character. Among the latest collections, Lollipop stands out, with the use of daring combinations of different stones. But also the pendants with refined cut stones. Lavinia Andorno

The virus-killing weapons of the Hong Kong Fair

Jewelery fairs: while Baselworld is down and the Couture and Jck in Las Vegas have been canceled, Hong Kong International Jewelery and Diamond Show tries to leave for the third time, together with the sister event Gem & Pearl Show. Coronavirus has upset the programs of the jewelry world. And so the Hong Kong fair, originally scheduled for March and then postponed in May, has been rescheduled from 3 to 6 August 2020.

Hong Kong International Jewellery Show
Hong Kong International Jewellery Show

But the coronavirus spectrum could affect the participation of buyers and exhibitors. To reassure both, the organizers are focusing on strict health security measures. For example, visitors who enter the spaces of AsiaWorld-Expo will have to go through an installation that controls their temperature and sanitises the clothes and objects transported. To be able to eliminate dangerous coronaviruses, visitors’ and staff’s clothing and surfaces in the conference center will be sterilized using an ultraviolet system, which can prevent the growth of microbes for up to 12 months. In addition, the air and the premises will be purified with a broad spectrum liquid disinfectant, which kills viruses and bacteria. In short, it will be like looking at jewelry in a hospital.

Couture 2020 is also jumping for covid-19

Like Baselworld, Couture 2020 in Las Vegas, the world’s largest jewelery event, has also been canceled. The American Gem Trade Association’s Antique Jewelry & Watch Show and GemFair Las Vegas, all scheduled for the first week of June, were also canceled due to covid-19. The cancellation of the Couture scheduled for June 1 to 5 at Wynn Las Vegas was in the air. The event slips to next year, from 3 to 7 June 2021, always at the Wynn.

Cancellations follow the postponement of Jck Las Vegas (June 2 to 5) and Luxury, organized by Reed Jewelry Group. At the moment, the next dates of the two events have not yet been announced. To stay on topic, the American Gem Society annual congress also followed the same fate and ended up in quarantine. The decision to postpone Couture is certainly not positive even for the large jewelery groups, which do not find a stage to present their new products. On the other hand, most of the companies in the sector have closed the business pending the end of the epidemic.

Baenteli, Swiss Made jewelery

/

Baenteli, Swiss precision at the service of creativity, which won a Couture Design Award 2019 ♦ ︎

In a small Swiss country, in the Canton of Bern, there is a jeweler who has a surprising production. The surprise comes from the fact that La Neuveville has about 3500 residents and is located between Lake Biel and the Jura mountains. In short, probably a great place for a walk, but definitely far from the jewelery routes. Here, however, in 1968 André Baenteli opened his first restoration and creation workshop for luxury jewelery and Swiss watches. His work was appreciated and in 1987 his son, Thierry Baenteli, presented his first collection at Baselworld.

Since then, the presence at the major jewelery fairs of the small but sophisticated Maison is constant. Its production also includes high jewelry and, as it is fair to expect in the nation that has made precision an export virtue, every piece of jewelery is certified and duly stamped by the Swiss authorities.
Baenteli also points out that while the initial stages of the drawings are manually realized, the latest phases are created with the best and latest jewelery production technology, including 3D design and printing, Cnc laser cutting, precision stones precious and laser engraving. In short, artisans, but also in tune with the times. The jewelry produced has an immediately perceptible quality. A quality that was awarded at the Couture Design Award with first place in the Best in Diamonds Below $ 20,000 category. Rudy Serra

The new dreams of Noor Fares

The new jewels by Noor Fares, awarded at the Couture Design Awards 2019 ♦ ︎

The year 2019 must have a particular astral ascendant for Noor Fares, a Lebanese designer (her father is a former deputy prime minister of Lebanon), born in Paris and residing in London. She is convinced that supernatural forces act alongside daily reality, and must have probably thought that the triumph at Couture in Las Vegas is not a coincidence. The designer won, in fact, in the Best in Colored Gemstones Below $ 20,000 category at the Couture Design Awards. In fact, she certainly does not lack creativity, perhaps due to her family origins.

Hala, her mother, was an artist known for his inclination to wear mismatched shoes. The grandmother was a creative and aunt Sonia Fares a fashion designer as well as former Miss Lebanon. The aesthetic research of the British naturalized designer is linked to the belief that stones also bring positive energy, as in the Prana collection, which follows the Chakra collection. The jewels always are uses stones in a creative way, but also in a vaguely alien way, as if they were the result of the work of a designer who has just arrived on Earth. Perhaps this is why they won the Las Vegas jury. Giulia Netrese

Federica Rettore at Orticola

The Orticola collection by Federica Rettore, with a pair of earrings on the podium of the Couture Design Awards ♦

Orticola is the name of an exhibition-market organized in spring in the most central gardens of Milan. It is an appointment for lovers of flowers and gardening, but also a moment of social life for the upper class of the Lombard city. And Federica Rettore was born and works in Milan, even though she has been touring the world with her jewelry collections for a long time. What is link among gardening and the designer? Simple: his latest collection is called Orticola. An idea that must have inspired the jewelery maker a lot, since a pair of earrings from the Orticola collection ended up on the podium (second place) in the Best in Innovative category at the Couture Design Awards.

The beauty of the collection, however, is that it does not aim to reproduce the plants as if the jewels were small sculptures. Unlike other colleagues who copy leaves and flowers using gold and precious stones, Federica Rettore decided to create jewelry as if they were an alien botanic. Leaves, but with opals and gold veins that are not a simple photograph of nature, but an original interpretation. The idea appealed to Couture, in fact, and probably will be successful even among those who attend Orticola.

An anaconda can be very convincing and not only if you are in the middle of the Amazon forest. The largest snake in the world can crawl up on the stage of the Couture Show Awards, in Las Vegas. And the skin of the reptile, transformed however in jewel, he convinced everyone. A bracelet from the Anaconda collection by Vendorafa, in fact, received the coveted award for the Editor’s Choice category. A great satisfaction for the company born in Valenza almost 70 years ago.

Among the pieces of the Ananconda collection, to convince the Las Vegas jury was an 18 carat yellow gold bracelet with black diamonds.

The two faces of Gismondi 1754

The jewels of Gismondi 1754, the Maison in Genoa that won a Couture Design Award ♦ ︎

Fine jewelry and high jewelry: the production of Gismondi 1754 travels on a two-track family-run business based in Genoa. La Maison won the Couture Design Awards in the People’s Choice category. A sign that everyone loved the necklace from the Essenza collection, made with a cascade of diamonds and emeralds. But, alongside unique pieces of fine jewelry, Gismondi 1754 also presented more traditional precious jewels, such as the Dedalo collection, in rose gold and diamonds, with geometric grooves running through the metal. A modern line, current, very European, very Italian design, which follows the most famous Aura collection, where the common thread is instead the concentric circles.

4×4 diamonds at Couture

At the Couture in Las Vegas the diamonds of Canadamark in 4×4 version directed by Muse ♦ ︎

The Couture in Las Vegas organized between the Wynn and the Encore Resort is always an event full of news. One of these, in the 2019 edition, is represented by the series of jewels created by four leading designers for the Canadian Canadamark, a mining company engaged in diamond mining in Canada (responsibly, they stress).

The four designers engaged by Canadamark through the Muse agency are Mark Davis, Nikos Koulis, Silvia Furmanovich and Vram. Each designer made four Canadamark diamond jewels and for this reason, the series was called 4×4.

Nikos Koulis, a Greek designer who creatively uses the Art Deco style and unusual geometric shapes, has chosen to expand his famous Oui collection, obviously with Canadamark diamonds. Sylvia Furmanovich, Brazilian designer was inspired by a Japanese maple leaf represented on a kimono from the Meiji period. Vram Minassian used diamonds with yellow gold to create jewelry with inusual curved shapes. Mark Davis combined Bakelite with diamonds to create pieces like a vintage air bracelet.

A prize for the worst jewel

At Couture in Las Vegas comes the prize for the worst design of jewelery ♦ ︎

In the scientific world there is the Ig Nobel prize, a parody of the most authoritative Nobel prize: it is awarded to the worst studies or inventions. Then there is the Barbara Dex Award, an unofficial award that rewards the worst dressed artist at the Eurovision Song Contest. Now there is also the prize for the worst jewel. Paradoxically, to propose this strange competition, is the event known for bringing together the best of design: the Couture of Las Vegas.

The organizers have announced the WTF?! Award, a kind of celebration of the imperfection dedicated to jewelry projects that have turned out to be a disaster. According to Gannon Brousseau, director of Couture, “the idea of this competition came from the conversations that many of our veteran Couture designers had during the Tucson fashion shows. We liked the idea and we thought it was a great way to infuse some humor into our event, in addition to underlining how the creative process, even among established designers, can have its ups and downs “.

But will there really be a Maison that will expose itself to reveal creative failures? The organizers are confident and some project which turned out to be a bad idea has already been indicated by the National Jeweler website. For example, a gold calculator from the British twin manufacturer Deakin and Francis or a pendant with an opal by Jetter.

By the way, if you want to know the meaning of the abbreviation WTF, just consult the Urban Dictionary, which contains the meaning in full: What the fuck. Alessia Mongrando

Goodbye Jck, VicenzaOro goes to the Couture Show

VicenzaOro moves in Las Vegas: leaves Jck and makes an agreement for the Couture Show ♦ ︎

Bye bye Jck. VicenzaOro has planned a move to Las Vegas. Italian Exhibition Group, the fair company that organizes VicenzaOro, has in fact decided to move the center of gravity in the Couture Show, a fair always organized in Las Vegas during the same period. The Couture Show is considered more exclusive and is the event with the participation of top designers and Maison. Ieg has thus made an agreement with Emerald Expositions, the organizer of the prestigious annual show, which also includes a contest with prizes. Ieg, among other things, has recently acquired 51% of Fb international, a company specializing in preparation of booths of fairs in North America.

The Mediterranean on the neck

The new bracelet by Selim Mouzannar presented at Couture and other novelties by the famous Lebanese jeweler ♦

It is when winter comes that increases the nostalgia for the water of the Mediterranean Sea. The blue waves of the sea where civilization was born, is now transformed into a necklace by Selim Mouzannar, designer of a Lebanese family of jewelers. Although it has outlets in France, United States, Great Britain and Switzerland, Selim Mouzannar has maintained his headquarters in Beirut, because of the link with the culture that overlooks the banks of the sea. To the sea, now, has dedicated a series of the same color of the crystal waters. According to the jeweler, in this jewel has summarized the different shades of blue Mediterranean: as the sea near the island of Hydra, in Greece, to Formentera in Spain, of the French Riviera… It took three months of work to compose the necklace Mediterranean, made in 18K yellow gold, diamonds, sapphires, aquamarines, turquoise. But, as you can see from the pictures, the creativity of the brand Lebanon does not stop there: he also won a prize at the Couture Awards in Las Vegas in 2016. Matilde de Bounvilles

The golden thread of Carolina Bucci

The soft golden fabrics by Carolina Bucci, flexible jewels made with the ancient Florentine handicraft tradition ♦ ︎

There is a Penelope in the jewelry store. And she is Italian. We have already talked about Carolina Bucci other times, but today we want to emphasize an aspect of her jewelery production: gold fabrics. With a scarf-necklace in gold of different colors Carolina Bucci has won one of the Couture Awards 2018. And so the award has also put the spotlight on the production of gold threads of the designer, who is based in London, but comes from a family of jewelers of Florence. And the Florentine technique of working on warp and weft is at the base of the work of Tuscan artisans who make fabrics, not only with 18-karat gold, but also with silk. A mix that it allows to make bracelets, necklaces, but also earrings of different consistency and always soft.
The jewels are therefore yellow, white, pink, black or brown and can often be worn in different ways: wrapped around the wrist or neck. In some cases the mesh can be ordered in the desired length and width. Everything is made by hand, with a result that seems to have emerged from the fifteenth-century paintings in flowery Gothic style, where gold was added to the brilliant colors of the painter. Elie Top traveling on the stars

The new mysterious cosmos of Elie Top, between zodiac, hidden mechanisms, symbology… ♦ ︎
Secrète Cosmogonies. That is the secrets of the cosmos or, better, of the stars loved by astrologers. The zodiac signs, in spite of scientific findings, are a game of society that still thrills many people, men and women. For some, associating zodiacal signs with behaviors and forecasts is fun, for others it is a faith. For all of them the whimsical French designer Elie Top has launched Cosmogonie Secrète, a collection that reveals and obscures the zodiacal signs engraved in the jewels, which have movable elements. Jewels that the designer presented at the Couture in Las Vegas.
The passion for the stars, in any case, is not new for Elie Top, who launched his jewelery brand in January 2015, after having worked for many years with important companies and designers such as Alber Elbaz, Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent , Loulou de la Falaise, Baccarat, Roger Vivier. It is no coincidence that his first line of jewelry is called Mécaniques Célestes, which was followed by the Etoile Mystérieuse collection. All jewels are also complicated objects that seem to come out of a fantasy tale, amulets or mysterious mechanisms capable of producing spells. Who knows if Elie Top’s horoscope had predicted it.
