The Orient by Buddha Mama

The Buddhism joins with jewelery in the original collections of Buddha Mama ♦ ︎
The way of meditation can lead to unexpected goals. For those who are involved in this philosophical-spiritual practice, meditation is a way to elevate oneself, to understand oneself, or just to live more serene. For the Buddhists meditation is something more. But, by surprise, it can even bring you to the jewelery. This is the case of Buddha Mama, a line of handmade jewelry, inspired Buddhism and Oriental traditions. Everything started at the kitchen table, searching for funds dedicated to his local Buddhist center, Zen Village in Miami. Nancy Badia then began to wire beads and make necklaces and bracelets.

One thing led to another…  After 25 years, Nancy and her husband have decided to think great, but without abandoning the ideals of youth. Buddha Mama is the brand born under the signs of Buddhism and Jewelery, so much that he participated at Couture in Las Vegas. Waiting for the spirit of purity, the designer proposes rings, bracelets and necklaces of exuberant forms, deliberately oriental, but with an all-American liveliness. Gold, lacquer and precious stones are the elements used for jewelery collections that remind us the origins of the Maison in a Coachella-style.

Christina Alexiou on the moon

//

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 was the space flight to land a man on the moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle and Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the Moon’s surface. A historic moment for humanity and an important date for jewelry as well. Celebrating that event is now the collection that Christina Alexiou presented at the Couture in Las Vegas.

Bracciale de Lunar Eclipse, in oro, diamanti, zaffiri

The collection consists of earrings, rings, necklace and bracelets but, above all, translates the surface of our satellite into jewels. Slightly irregular gold spheres, with lunar craters composed of precious stones: white or brown diamonds, but also blue and pink sapphires, emeralds peek out from the surface of the Moon in a jewel version. In some pieces, in addition to the lunar spheres, the classic shape of the crescent is also used, which perhaps the astronauts have never seen, but those who wear the jewels do.

Anna Maccieri Rossi by night and by day

//

There are refined watches that provide the Day & Night display, so as to immediately distinguish the phases of the day. Anna Maccieri Rossi spent many years dealing with luxury watches, the dark side of the Force (let’s joke) before moving on to jewelry. Perhaps it is the memories of the years behind that inspired the new Night & Day collection, which she presented at the Couture in Las Vegas. It is a line of jewels that keeps intact the style and technique adopted by the designer, who not surprisingly uses details that are part of the watchmaking tradition, starting with the dials.

Collana Night & Day, in oro, turchese, madreperla

The Night & Day collection features two different colors, with a preference for blue and light blue to indicate the night, while for the day side the shades become more lively. Reversible jewels that can be worn on one side or the other, in tune with the hours of the day or more simply with your mood. Alongside gold, the designer uses materials such as mother of pearl, turquoise, pink jade, lapis lazuli, aventurine, malachite, tiger’s eye for rings, necklaces, pendants.

The winners of the 2022 Couture Design Awards

Every year the Couture in Las Vegas stops with bated breath: who is the winners of the Couture Design Awards? The award ceremony, which this year was decided by a jury composed of Nikos Koulis, Juliet de La Rouchefoucauld, Tanika Winsdom, Diana Schade and Stellene Volandes, is one of the highlights of the event in the capital of Nevada. All the pieces participating in the design competition are exhibited days in advance and everyone wonders who, in the end, will be awarded.

The winners, at the end, are announced during the celebration of the Couture Design Awards on Saturday night. In addition to those indicated by the jury, the community of retailers votes for the three finalists of the Peoples’ Choice Award via SMS. Among the winners, this year there are also two Italian jewelers: Gismondi 1754 and Mariani 1878: both with roots that sink into history, in short.

Best in Diamonds above $ 20,000: Gismondi 1754
Gismondi 1754 was awarded the prize, collected by Massimo Gismondi, creative director and CEO, for his necklace, Raggio di Sole, a unique piece inspired by the early morning sun. The Italian Maison was also a finalist for the People’s Choice Award. Gismondi had already won the Couture Award in 2019 for his necklace from the Essenza Collection from which the earring was also born. The Raggio di Sole series required over 600 hours of work for six months. It is composed of 27.83 carats of pear-cut white diamonds and 16.04 carats of fancy yellow diamonds.The jewel, together with the bracelet and earrings, were completed shortly before Couture. The ring will complete the collection. Raggio di Sole was inspired, in 2020 during the lockdown, one early morning in a chalet in Valtournenche (Alps, Italy) in front of a coffee while the sun rose behind the mountain top. The necklace is his interpretation of the first rays that create a crown behind the mountain as it began to light up the sky.

At the Couture Design Awards he wore a necklace dotted with delicate pear and round cut diamonds. Mariani is also a subscriber to the Las Vegas prize: he has already won in 2017 and last year: a very popular replay.

The luxurious lightness of Mike Joseph Jewelery

/

Mike Saatji is the creative director of Mike Joseph Jewelery, a young brand, which has achieved good results. Mike Saatji came first in the Gold Jewelery Below $ 20,000 category in 2015 at the Couture Design Awards in Las Vegas and the prize was the launching pad for the creation of the Mike Joseph Jewelery brand. With this brand, in 2018, he won again at the Couture Design Awards in the Diamonds Above $ 20,000 category, with his eclectic Amante necklace.

Born in Armenia to a family of jewelers, Mike spent every spare moment of his formative years among jewelry. After a multi-year apprenticeship, studying in different cities, he concentrated on how to translate fantasy into practice. Finally, the designer opened his factory with his brother Joseph. And this explains the name of the brand, which sells all over the world, but is based in Bangkok. The fine workmanship of the 18-karat gold, which transforms the jewelry into objects with a light design, is the characteristic of Mike Josehp Jewllery, with fringes and geometric volumes studded with diamonds.

A cascade of diamonds with Yeprem

/

There are Maison that have been offering the same jewels for decades. Legitimate. But there are others that amaze with special effects. And they really are very special when it comes to fine jewelry. One of these brands is Yeprem, born in Beirut, but active on the international market with jewels that challenge even a sheikh’s bank account. In particular, Yeprem is famous for its diamond jewelry. And they are jewels that often break the mold, as evidenced by the new pieces presented at the same time as the Paris Couture week.

Collana indossata con 1341 diamanti e uno smeraldo

A jewel undoubtedly out of the ordinary is the Claw ring. Forget the classic diamond ring: this is a real claw with five bands of gold covered with diamonds that sparkle on the back of the hand. A jewel with an aggressive design. On the contrary, the Crown tiara suggests a romantic and, inevitably, luxurious atmosphere. Among the new proposals for high jewelery there is also a necklace with diamonds and emeralds with a collar. Also in this case the jewel suggests a classic and refined feeling thanks to the 1341 precious stones used, of which 52.98 carats of round cut diamonds, 30.43 marquise cut diamonds, in addition to the 4.93 carat emerald. Jewels that also enchanted Jennifer Lopez, who performed on stage with Yeprem jewels during the special concert for the film she stars in, Marry Me.

Harika’s geometries

/

In 2006 she was in New York representing a Turkish designer. A role that, however, was tight for Harika Ustaoglu. So she decided it was time to launch herself into the world of jewelry. The Istanbul designer, who lives and works in the American city, created her own line of jewelry and, in 2014, a brand that has her name: Harika. She took the first steps thanks to the goldsmiths of the Turkish city, in charge of translating the designs of her collections into gold and precious stones, until she found support directly in the USA.

The jewelry design is very modern and undoubtedly original: very geometric shapes, very modern and abstract, with designs that are inspired, she says, even by details captured as she walks the streets of the city. The stones are also cut in an unusual way. The jewels are made of 14 and 18 karat gold and use diamonds of every color, as well as stones such as aquamarine, sapphire, beryl, quartz. A bracelet of hers made it to the Couture finalists in the diamonds under $ 20K category.

Onirikka’s Precious Dreams

///

The dream: from Shakespeare and Freud, from Emperor Constantine to Harry Potter, the images that crowd the imagination during the night can affect life and even history. Gloria Rank, the designer who founded Onirikka, knows it well. The name of the brand, in fact, derives from the word oniric, that is, concerning dreams. And, since in a dream you can wish for everything, Gloria dreamed of arriving among the finalists at the Design Couture Awards. Dream that came true, in the Best in Silver category, although Onirikka’s jewels are mostly created in gold, diamonds, stones and enamel. As in the Citron collection which uses colored sapphires, garnets and tsavorites.

Indeed, the story of Onirikka seems like a dream. Gloria Rank was born in Salvador, but she studied design at Le Arti Orafe in Florence, where she refined her compositional technique for jewelery. She returned to Salvador, got married, gave birth to two children and took a crash course in jewelry design at Gia in New York. Her first collection is from 2011, and was sold privately in El Salvador. Then, the designer launched the brand in the final at the Las Vegas fair.

Studio Rêves, dream jewelry

The dreams, the jewels and the precious stones of the Indian Maison Studio Rêves ♦ ︎

Rêves, French word which means dreams. But, in the world of jewelry, it also means a jewelry brand that is part of the Grandlifestyles group. Grand, the company explains, is an acronym composed of the initials of the Menda family: father Ghanshamdas, mother Renu, and sons Anuj, Niraj and Dheeraj, all of whom have prominent positions in the company.

The jewelry company, Studio Rêves, won in June 2018 the Couture award in Las Vegas in the Best in Diamonds Below 20K dollars category. Translated: how to make an amazing jewel spending less than you expect. And the earrings awarded by the jury, in fact, give the impression of costing more than the amount indicated. But Studio Rêves manages to combine a production of artisanal jewelery with the containment of costs.

The Studio Rêves brand was born in 1998 in Mumbai. But, in reality, the brothers Menda, Dheeraj, Niraj and Anuj are the third generation in the trade in precious stones and the whole family, including uncles, are still engaged in the activity of diamond trading. The designer, however, is Anuj’s wife, Kanishka Menda, who also deals with merchandising and product development. She design the many precious jewels with a style that does not forget the Indian tradition, but can also please a Western woman. As in the case of the Couture award-winning earrings.

Sydney Evan’s successful mix

//

Rosanne Karmes is a precocious woman: she began her career in jewelry when she was still in high school, working for Marvel Jewelry, an American jewelry manufacturer. An experience that she, she tells her, helped her learn all the aspects necessary to manage a jewelry brand. Rosanne founded her company in Los Angeles in 2001: Sydney Evan, which brings together the names of her children. It was also a hit by Miley Cyrus, P! NK, Emma Roberts, Eva Chen, Nina Agdal, Rihanna, Kate Bosworth, Jennifer Lawrence, Rocky Barnes, Jennifer Hudson, Gabrielle Union, Roselyn Sanchez, Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara and Emma Stone.

Sydney Evan’s jewels are made of 14 karat gold, semi-precious stones and a few diamonds. But that’s not what she counts. For a certain period of time the brand was the best-selling brand at Bergdorf Goodman thanks also to the idea of mixing diamonds with semi-precious stone beads, with the addition of the classic lucky and evil eye symbols. In 2021, for example, Sydney Evan introduced the Go Outside line. Look inside, with shields, hands of Fatima and other classic icons for those who rely on superstition.

How many awards for Mike Joseph

//

Mike Joseph, the jewels of Mike Saatji’s House gathers a lot of awards. That’s why ♦ ︎

How big can high be the self-esteem of those who receive a lot of prizes? Mike Saatji, creative director of Mike Joseph Jewelery, has probably a self-esteem tall as the sky. And it’s ok. In 2015 Mike won first place in the Gold Jewelery Below $ 20,000 category at the Couture Design Awards in Las Vegas. The award served as a springboard for the creation of the Mike Joseph Jewelery brand, a new chapter in Mike Saatji’s life. In 2018 his Amante series won the Diamonds Above 20,000 category award, again at the Couture Design Awards. And you can guess what won in 2019. Yes, still a Couture Design Awards, but this time in the Best in Haute Couture category.

Although his brand, Mike Joseph, is only a few years old, Mike Saatji has 25 years of experience in designing and manufacturing high quality jewelery. Born in Armenia to a family of jewelers, Mike spent every spare moment of his formative years in jewelry workshops. After a multi-year apprenticeship, studying in several cities, under various masters, he decided to start his own business. But why, however, the Maison has a different name from that of the designer? Simple: Joseph is the name of his brother, with whom he opened his jewelry company. With great success.

Margery Hirschey, from deep America

Margery Hirschey, from fashion model to designer who loves natural stones and recycled gold ♦

Margery Hirschey’s jewels are distributed in about forty jewelery stores all over the United States. The brand also sells in Canada and Puerto Rico beyond, of course, the rest of the world through online commerce. Let’s say this to emphasize how jewels that have a artisan look are actually the fruit of a studied strategy, which has led a pair of Margery Hirschey-colored emerald-colored earrings in second place in the Couture Design Awards. These earrings, reminiscent of Alexander Calder’s sculptures, represent the style of the Colorado company.

Margery Hirschey began her career with Charles Kliebacker, New York’s couturier, as a model. He launched his jewelery line in 2008, Colorado, where he worked. The same year, practically without experience in the field, in an improvised studio, the designer created a collection that debuted in a trunk show at the Bergdorf Jewelery Designer Salon. In January 2014 Margery Hirschey received the Rising Star Award for Jewelery. It uses recycled gold and silver and adores the pizza of Naples.

Yoshinobu Kataoka, the surprise of Japan

/

From Japan to Las Vegas: the success of a master of jewelry with the touch of the Rising Sun, Yoshinobu Kataoka ♦ ︎

What can the Japanese spirit do when it enters a jewelry workshop? Simple: like Yoshinobu Kataoka, an artist and goldsmith with over 25 years of experience, who in 2011 created his Maison, with stores in Tokyo and New York. Kataoka has followed his vocation through the cleanliness and minimal, among the vocations of the Rising Sun and the glitter of the stones that come from the markets of the West. The result is a delicate jewelry, without pomp, where the richness lies in the details as the milgrain borders, that is with tiny beads, handmade, innovative cuts and diamond settings. A work that has also received a prestigious award: a Couture Best Design Award 2019 in the category Best in Diamonds Above $ 20,000.

Kataoka jewels are handmade in Tokyo. Gold is customized in special alloys according to the requested specifications of Yoshinobu Kataoka, which also underlines one aspect: no harmful chemicals are used in the jewelery production process. All the pieces are handmade with precious stones and diamonds hand-picked and set and produced in limited quantities to guarantee a minimum environmental impact.

The flappers of Maria Canale

Maria Canale and the flappers, women who in the 1920s wore slightly shorter (but not mini) skirts, which loved a different hairstyle, listened to jazz, smoked and drank alcohol. Without forgetting elegance, because their choices soon became fashionable. To the flappers Maria Canale has dedicated a successful collection, which has as its central motif the fringes composed of small gold spheres, to which are added emeralds. The story of Maria Canale actually began in the 1920s, the flappers time.

But with his grandmother, who had the same name and with a ship that left Genoa in 1921, loaded with Italians who were looking for their fortune in America. Maria Canale, however, had left to study at Columbia University and to expand the family business in the United States. The story of Maria Canale began like this. Now to continue the journey is the niece of the same name and is one of the most famous designers: just think that she has won more than 30 international awards and has worked extensively for giants such as Tiffany, Harry Winston or Mikimoto. Now Maria Canale is a New York based Maison, and she is a perfect New Yorker, based in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. But the “C” still appears on the jewels of her collections, which was the family crest imported by her grandmother on Manhattan soil, together with her passion for Fiat sports cars.

Maria Canale has made a career, it is true, but she too started early: at 13 she was already an apprentice to a goldsmith, before graduating in metalworking and studying design. Her motto is: simplicity is the secret of true elegance. In particular, her jewels are inspired by the art deco style, with well-defined geometric shapes, and the alternation of light and dark materials. Which flappers would have liked too.

Half of the visitors expected in Las Vegas

The question is asked by all jewelery operators, sellers, buyers, companies: is it worth returning to participate in a trade fair? An answer seems to be given by a survey conducted by National Jeweler, which has investigated the intentions of traveling to Las Vegas, where the various scheduled shows will be held at the end of August. This will be the first major appointment for jewelry in the post-Covid era (hopefully). There are many expectations: even if digital platforms have made up for the lack of live contacts, seeing and evaluating the jewels in person is another matter entirely.

The survey conducted on 515 retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers or other professionals, however, does not dispel the doubts: the majority of respondents (77%) said they frequently or regularly participate in jewelry fairs in Las Vegas (usually in end of May-June). But for 2021 only about half, 54%, said they wanted to participate in the August appointment. Of these, 78% said they were ready to go. And, among these enterprising. 22% have already partially booked the trip and 56% completely. Also according to the survey, 85% said they wanted to participate in Jck Las Vegas, 53% in Jck’s Luxury, 37% in Couture, 36% in Agta GemFair and, finally, 26% in Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show. Of course these are the intentions so far and reality is not necessarily more positive.

Of the 46% of respondents who said they do not want to go to Las Vegas, 32% will not change their mind, while 14% are unsure. The main reason for avoiding the trip are concerns about covid (40%), the necessary presence for the activity (28%) and unwanted dates.

The blow of design for Adel Chefridi

//

The jewels by Adel Chefridi, from Tunis to New York City ♦ ︎

Jewelers are born in Tunis too. This is the case of Adel Chefridi, who fell in love with jewelry as a child, as he says, in what is a city with an ancient history, which starts from the Carthaginians. A mix of cultures, such as Roman, Byzantine, Andalusian, Jewish, Ottoman, Islamic and French, which also influenced the style of Adel Chefriti, who left Tunisia and the mysterious glimpses of the Sahara, settled in the USA in 1998, in New York, although he now works in the nearby town of Rhinebeck. One of the distinctive elements of his design is engraving, one of the first techniques historically adopted to make jewelry.

As often happens, the culture and taste of those who move to another country creates a hybrid between tradition and the aesthetics of the place of arrival. The designer attended Gia to study gemology, specialized in goldsmithing and diamond setting, but he is also self-taught. In addition, he went to India to look for gems to setting them on gold and silver. The result of all this process included, also, participation in the Couture in Las Vegas, the most exclusive stage in the USA, where the most refined Maisons meet. After all, the Sahara and the Nevada desert have some aspects in common. His last jewelry production it’s Secret Garden collection.

Leyla Abdollahi, the charm of the two worlds

The jewels of Leyla Abdollahi, winner of the Couture Design Awards ♦

A few years ago she won a special prize: The Best in Debut at Couture at Las Vegas 2017. The wished acknowledgment, however, will not have surprised Leyla Abdollahi, which in London has now a host of passionate admirers. And, perhaps more importantly, she has gained space within the most exclusive e-commerce sites. “My jewel reflects emotions, passions, and desire with a blur of creativity. I start with a concept that then blossoms into an elegant ornament,” she likes to repeat Leyla Abdollahi. It is true that that all-Oriental sensibility, along with Western-style luxury, has produced a mix that is not easily imitable.

Leyla Abdollahi has a background related to fine arts, refined with Jewel Design lessons at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. In 2011 Leyla launched her own business and did not have to wait long time to find many admirers. A year later, for example, she won the Jewelery Designer of the Year at the Jewelery Awards 2012 in Great Britain. It was been a trampoline that the designer has used in a right way. Judge for yourself.
