Oscar Heyman, a century of luxury

High jewelry with a long and hard-working history behind it. It is that of Oscar Heyman & Brothers, an American company which has been producing since 1912 high-end jewelry, specializing in particular in pieces with colored gems. But many jewelers in the States call it by another name: The Jewelers’ Jeweler (the jeweler of jewelers), which is the name of a book published by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. And this is because Oscar Heyman mainly sells through other jewelers.

Bracciale con pietra luna, zaffiri, diamanti
Bracelet with moonstone, sapphires, diamonds

As mentioned, the history of the Maison is long and has its roots in the distant Ukraine. Oscar, Nathan and Harry Heyman founded the company in 1912 in New York City, but after an apprenticeship in a laboratory in Kharkiv, Ukraine, before emigrating to the United States. They were later joined by their three younger brothers, George, William and Louis, and by their two sisters, Frances and Lena.

This is the story of Oscar Heyman, which is now managed by the second and third generation of the family: Adam C. Heyman (president), Thomas Heyman (vice president and treasurer) and Lewis Heyman (vice president and secretary). Office and manufacturing facilities remained in New York on Madison Avenue. In fact, the Heymans say they are very fond of the city. In addition to selling jewelry with its own brand, the company also works on behalf of third parties. For example, up until the time the Richemont Group acquired a majority stake, Oscar Heyman produced invisible jewelry made in New York for Van Cleef & Arpels from 1939 to 2001, but he also worked for Tiffany and, in the past, also for Cartier.

Ancient Rome on Jorge Adeler’s jewels

Coins of the Roman Empire and rough gems. 18-karat gold and large baroque pearls. Jorge Adeler‘s world is vast and complex. Starting with his story: the name Adeler is of Scandinavian origin. But Jorge Adeler was born in Argentina. Globetrotter, in 1973 he moved with his family to the United States, in northern Virginia, and gave life to the Maison that bears his name. Today the company is run by her two daughters, Valentina Adeler Armor (graduate in gemology from the GIA) and Wendy Adeler Hall (vice president of marketing).

Earrings with coins depicting the Roman goddess of Happiness

Jorge Adeler jewels mainly follow two strands: unique precious stones, often not faceted, exotic pearls and ancient coins, adapted and inserted on rings, bracelets and earrings. For example, natural aquamarine in an 18-karat gold setting with diamond details, or coins embossed with the Roman goddess of Happiness. A mix, which, among other things, is also offered in a series of jewels in a men’s version. In short, they are jewels for strong tastes, perhaps more American than European. But certainly original.

Sean Gilson, amazing design

The innovative jewels, without excesses, by the American designer Sean Gilson ♦ ︎

Designer? Artist? Artisan? What is the right definition to define Sean Gilson? Meeting him is not easy: he is usually in his laboratory in a small town in Connecticut, USA. Although every so often he goes to New York for some workshops or for extraordinary events, as it was for GemGèneve, where Sean Gilson was present in the Designer Vivarium area.

The difficulty of meeting this eclectic jewelry artist is also due to his way of working: he personally creates the finish of the jewel. Pieces that are often surprising. As for the earrings presented at the Swiss event, made with a particularly delicate stone, together with white gold and blue sapphires: a piece of virtuoso jewelry. To achieve the desired effect the American designer also uses different techniques and combines traditional tools with more modern ones. The result is innovative, modern jewels that do not lose their wearability. “A jewel should never scream if there is the integrity of design, materials and craftsmanship,” says Gilson.

Jennifer DeMoro, California dreamin’

California. Sun, beaches, waves. And a fashion that loves comfort and the informal. In this context Jennifer DeMoro found inspiration for her jewels, which have the seventies as their ideal, when California was the dream of young people all over the world. But Jennifer DeMoro’s jewels are not necessarily to be attributed to a hippy atmosphere or the current Coachella Festival. The designer’s brand is based in southern California, in San Clemente, a seaside town just below Los Angeles. The beach lifestyle in her jewels is transformed into many colored semi-precious stones, which adapt to shiny gold and which remind the designer of the sunsets and intense shades of her territory.

Anello in oro 14 carati con topazio azzurro, smeraldo, ametista, zaffiro arancio e rosa, granato, citrino
14k gold ring with blue topaz, emerald, amethyst, orange and pink sapphire, garnet, citrine

The stones often have special cuts and the colors are chosen to express strong contrasts, with clear geometric shapes: sapphires, rubies, garnets, spinels, emeralds and amethysts are worked with cuts that include baguette, princess, round and marquise. Jennifer DeMoro also finished a Jewelry Design course at Gia.

The new jewels with pleats by Nak Armstrong

Texan jeweler Nak Armstrong celebrated its 25th year in business with a space in the historic luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman in New York. Nak Armstrong is also a member of the CFDA (American Fashion Designers Association). It’s a further step forward for Armstrong, who opened his flagship store in Austin, Texas a couple of years ago. The designer is considered a re-inventor of the chandelier earring. The jeweler is internationally recognized for his innovations from standard metalworking techniques and an experimental aesthetic.

Nak Armstrong launched the first collection in early 2011, quickly bought by Barneys, New York. The style reflects his experience in architecture and fashion: he has developed his own technique of processing gems, which he calls “pleated stone”, with proprietary cuts. SI was also inspired by origami, the technique of creating small folded paper objects after a trip to Japan. Armstrong had co-founded Anthony Nak with partner, Anthony Camargo, of which he remained designer and creative director until 2010, when the two separated and Nak continued with his brand.

Nature seen through Nicholas Varney’s eyes

The jewels of great design by Nicholas Varney, one of the top jewels of the moment ♦

Among the designers who in recent years have reached quotations at the top there is Nicholas Varney. Being born in a rich environment, also from an aesthetic point of view, it meant something in his training. The father of Nicholas, in fact, is the owner of Dorothy Draper, who is an interior designer company in New York considered very anti-minimalist. He, however, decided to break away from the family and living in Palm Beach. But the taste for the richness of the elements that make up something, remained.

Organic forms, like fish and plants, but also abstract and geometric shapes characterize its jewels.

Set of earrings and medlar-shaped brooch in gold and fancy diamonds

He do not works about environments, luxurious homes of wealthy Americans, but he is dedicated to the richness as composite jewelry, with the choice of unusual precious and semi precious stones. To be clear: her jewelry can cost several tens of thousands of dollars. They are, in short, for an audience of connoisseurs, who loves the colors, the combinations and metaphors. One of favorite subject of Nicholas Varney is the sea, but also the waters of the Mississippi River, Colorado. Surrounded for years by floral wallpaper and plush furnishings, also he has that typically American taste to mix a bit ‘styles. Eclecticism? It depends on your point of view. Here are some examples of his work.

Andreoli hero of two worlds

From the sale of carpets in India,to Valenza, till up to the headquarters in Rockefeller Center in New York, so here is the high jewelry by Andreoli.
The work in Valenza, the success in the US. Andreoli is an American brand of haute joaillerie that started its journey in Italy in 1945, when the Hadjibay family has established itself in the trade of precious stones (we have also spoken here). Since 1970, the company has evolved and keeps the design and realization of pieces of fine jewelery in Valenza, Italy, while the market on which it operates is the American one. Seen the origins, not surprising that the protagonists of the collections are large stones, like brilliant diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires, as well as pearls, coral and turquoise. Not only that: in addition to gold Andreoli uses also platinum and titanium to create even impressive jewels, such as the large necklace with over 850 carats of rubies and 20 grams of beads. It must not be easy to wear in casual manner. The helm of the company is governed now by Caroline Hadjibay, who took the baton from Jack Hadjibay patriarch from his headquarters in Rockefeller Center in New York.

Spilla composta con 65,41 carati di zaffiri, oro e titanio

And to say that the history of the family started by Abraham Hadjibay, in India, where he sold the best Persian carpets. But we must add that Abraham’s father had sold gems to the czar of Russia. Abraham Hadjibay has focused from carpets to jewelery, the trade in precious stones. The son, Jack Hadjibay, then continued the business. The activity of the brand Andreoli, however, originated in Valenza, Italy, where it was founded in 1845. In 1920 Andreoli has launched her prêt-à-porter collection and immediately achieved success around the world. The two stories together have led to what is now one of the most famous brand of high jewelery.

Katey Walker’s horizon

The sea is the source of inspiration for Katey Walker, a jewelry designer who grew up on the Connecticut coast. Even when she moved to New York, the vastness of the ocean remained in the mind and heart of the designer, and she transfers this imprinting to her jewels. But it is a path that you have taken step by step. After a degree from Suffolk University in Boston, she majored in jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Then, she worked as an apprentice for one of the last major high jewelry manufacturing companies left in New York’s diamond district, working on pieces for Tiffany and David Yurman. In short, first the study, then the practical experience.

She lacked nothing to take off solo. She uses high-carat yellow and rose gold and a variety of natural gemstones, such as opals, all handcrafted from start to finish by her in her studio in the Connecticut River Valley, where she is back. The jewels are modern and cheerful, without unnecessary extravagance.

The Emily Armenta precious duende

/

Jewels inspired by the poems of Garcia Lorca: they are those of the American designer Emily Armenta ♦

Symbolism, art, inspiration, and business: the frontiers of design and trade come together in Armenta, brand of refined frontier production. Mind and body of the brand is Emily Armenta, a designer who has combined the teachings of an MBA (master of business administration) at Rice University (Texas), with the culture breathed at home (“I come from a family of artists,” says Emily).

Anello in argento rodiato con zaffiri blu
Anello in argento rodiato con zaffiri blu

She loves the poetry of Garcia Lorca and European culture, its roots, but lives in the USA. “I always had a lot of support to express myself through my art. So I designed, drawn sketches, and i started working with stones since I was a kid: it’s always been my passion. Designing jewelry is not only a way to express my creativity, but also my thoughts and emotions, “says the designer. That after the MBA has turned his passion into a creative work. A place where, says Emily, you can keep the feeling of duende, untranslatable Spanish word, which in Andalusia signifies the perception of a spirit, sometimes wicked, sometimes melancholy, often associated with the music of flamenco.
Emily Armenta
Emily Armenta

“Duende is a power and not a behavior, “she says, emphasizing the link between its production and Spanish roots. “Many of my pieces are inspired by famous works of art in the whole of Spain, such as poetry, painting, architecture, and sculpture. Some are physical representations of images found in works of art, to pay homage to the artist’s message. ” The symbolism is also in the choice of stones. For example, the Moonstone is used because tradition sees it as lucky stone “and to balance the yin and yang, protect women and children.” While opal is chosen as a symbol of hope and purity.

The jewels of the American designer Peggy Stephaich Guinness

//

Unlike many other designers, by searching the internet you can find many photos of Peggy Stephaich Guinness, in addition to her jewelry. And this is because the American designer, who has been offering her jewels since the early 1980s, is well integrated into the US upper class. There is a reason: the designer is a descendant of the Mellon family, founders of an American bank based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The surname Guinness, instead, derives from the marriage with Sebastian Guinness, heir to the brewery family, from which he later divorced. The name Stephaich, instead, derives from the Hungarian origins.

This does not mean, however, that his work is a hobby. It’s a serious commitment with an interesting result: Peggy Stephaich Guinness’s jewels are unique pieces that use precious and semi-precious stones, always mounted with 18-22 carat gold. Another peculiar aspect of the designer is the decision to make cuts of stones ad hoc for her jewels, instead of buying cut gems and adapting their creativity to them.

Dalben jewels are born on Lake Como and arrive in the USA

/

In Como, an Italian town on the Lake that George Clooney also likes, there is the Dalben atelier which, like the nearby body of water, is very popular with Americans and in generals to the tourists. It is the atelier of Oreste and Laura Dal Ben, who created Dalben Gioielli. The couple designs and makes handmade jewelry with simple but pleasant lines. Oreste Dal Ben is an artist applied to jewelery, while Laura is an architect. They work in a complementary way, drawing from the design school of nearby Milan, but also from the tradition of ancient art, architecture and nature.

Most of the Dalben jewels are sold in the USA.

Margery Hirschey, from fashion model to designer who loves natural stones and recycled gold ♦

Margery Hirschey’s jewels are distributed in about forty jewelery stores all over the United States. The brand also sells in Canada and Puerto Rico beyond, of course, the rest of the world through online commerce. Let’s say this to emphasize how jewels that have a artisan look are actually the fruit of a studied strategy, which has led a pair of Margery Hirschey-colored emerald-colored earrings in second place in the Couture Design Awards. These earrings, reminiscent of Alexander Calder’s sculptures, represent the style of the Colorado company.

Margery Hirschey began her career with Charles Kliebacker, New York’s couturier, as a model. He launched his jewelery line in 2008, Colorado, where he worked. The same year, practically without experience in the field, in an improvised studio, the designer created a collection that debuted in a trunk show at the Bergdorf Jewelery Designer Salon. In January 2014 Margery Hirschey received the Rising Star Award for Jewelery. It uses recycled gold and silver and adores the pizza of Naples.

Precious American Indians. In the sense of families originating from India who imported the passion for great gems, for great jewels, for the great gold in the United States. Over time this network has expanded, as shown by the history of A & D Gem, one of the leading importers of colored stones in the United States, which has been working with jewelers and retailers for almost half a century.
Founded by the Kordvani brothers, Abe, David and Johnny, in 1969, A & D Gem quickly emerged among the main sources of precious precious stones from New York, known as the King of emeralds.

Lights and colors by Bavna

The colorful and bright jewels by Sunny Jain, Indian by birth but American by adoption, who created Bavna ♦

Sunny by name and by nature. The jewelry designed by Sunny Jain are bright like the sun that illuminates California, where the designer has grown. The love for bright colors, the Bavna designer has acquired since childhood, from his jewelers family originating in India, where he was born. Sunny Jain, in short, has grown up in the midst of jewelry and immediately felt attracted by the colorful world of gems. Yet before turning to rings and necklaces he wanted to graduate in medicine, his second passion. Perhaps the ability to see inside the human body he also added the ability to interpret the soul of the great colored stones used for collections of Bavna, who created in 2011.

Jose Hess, luxury pop

//

Jose Hess, from necklaces refined gold and diamonds, to the cufflinks with Mickey’s face: the luxury meets pop.

One of the most imaginative designers of the century: perhaps can be defined in this way Jose Hess, but is also ok a definition as an artist or craftsperson. In short, it is one of those rare people who can do many things well but, above all, has a very definite personality, which turns her skills into precious objects. Master goldsmith, designer and gemologist, is a supporter of an American jewelry design, somewhere between pop and the extra luxury. Alongside refined necklaces, like the necklace Ribbon, you see on this page, you can find the twins by gold wrist with the face of Mickey Mouse. In addition to focusing on the creative process, moreover, Jose Hess teaches jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, he worked as a consultant for jewelry companies in the US and abroad, and draws collections of jewelry that are sold on television, with himself to make live presentations.

Another proof of its many attitudes? It was also the first American president to Cibjo, an international association that seeks to establish uniform standards for the jewelry industry worldwide. Jose is worshiped also in Hollywood, by celebrities such as Demi Moore, Cindy Crawford, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Candy Spelling. Jose Hess also has a story to tell: he was born in Germany, but fled with his family to Colombia, South America, before Nazi rule. In the South American country he was apprenticed to a goldsmith, where he learned the art of jewelry making. In 1951 Hess moved to New York, still working in the jewelry industry. He also served as a soldier for two years in the United States Army. Back in civilian life, he made models and jewelry for David Webb, before working for himself. Hess has also received numerous awards, including the De Beers Diamonds International Award. Alessia Mongrando

Lots of emeralds for Coomi

//

The jewels between culture and pomp of Coomi, from India to the USA. Now with a new collection with Colombian emeralds by Muzo

From the fané palaces of Mumbai to the busy avenues of New York or Los Angeles: Coomi Bhasin is an Indian designer who in 1977 left her native country (with much nostalgia) and founded her jewelry company in the USA. It is a strange mix of style and philosophy: textile designer, architect and landscape architect, she brought her experiences into the world of jewelry.

It is no coincidence that she defines herself as a Renaissance woman, that is, capable of creating and reasoning on many different tracks of culture. Her jewelry brand has been active since 2002 and has not struggled to find a prominent place not only in the United States, but also abroad. Her degree in Art History led her to create collections that are inspired by antiquity, from the world of the Egyptians to Greek and Roman sculpture. But not only, as the Muzo collection shows, with Colombian emeralds extracted from the mining company. Friend and appreciated by many celebrities, Coomi has found a balance between History with a capital S and the stories (with a lowercase s) of actors and actresses. At the bottom of Mumbay the most thriving industry is that of Bollywood. Alessia Mongrando

The today Middle Ages of Erica Molinari

From the Olympic luge to the jewels: it is not a curriculum that is often encountered that of Erica Molinari. Although the name is Italian, Erica is American: she was a member of the Olympic Luge Team for 18 years and participated in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Winter Games. But, leaving the ice descents, she decided to undertake another competition, this time between jewelry designers.

Perhaps inspired by its Italian origins, she has chosen a style that refers to ancient times, the Middle Ages, knights and round table, with a Byzantine touch. Her jewels, mostly charms and pendants, are made of 18 carat gold and oxidized silver, sometimes with the addition of diamonds, and carry symbols or writings. For example, the Maltese cross, or the hand, hearts. The appearance is that of jewelry found in an ancestor’s trunk. Yet, with this countercurrent choice, opposed to modern minimalism, Erica Molinari raised curiosity and achieved good success. After all, past centuries always have their charm.
