The nature of Mikimoto

///

Nature is queen in the high jewelery collection of the Japanese Mikimoto ♦ ︎

Mikimoto is the best known name of the Japanese high jewelry. La Maison specializes in pearls and is known for its refined choice, from Akoya to those of the South Seas. But, in addition to pearls, it can also offer pieces of high jewelery. And he does it with his special sensitivity, all Japanese. For 2018, for example, the high jewelery collection is called Praise to Nature, and is obviously inspired by the natural, floral and marine world. Pearls and diamonds are combined in light and versatile structures, almost like watercolor drawings by an artist from the Meiji period. In total, the new collection includes 12 necklaces, pendants, earrings, bracelets and brooches. Some pieces are truly extraordinary, like the necklace with a big sapphire, with Akoya pearls and navette-cut little aquamarines that look like small fish swimming in the middle of the waves. Or the necklace with five strands of pearls to climb and a large Paraiba tourmaline, which represents the purity of the water, surrounded by butterflies made of pavé diamonds. Giulia Netrese

The queen’s pearls to Meghan

Queen Elizabeth gives a pair of pearl earrings to Meghan Markle ♦ ︎

The jewels of Meghan Markle, wife of Prince Harry and Duchess of Sussex, continue to intrigue. In her first official release with Queen Elizabeth, for the inauguration of a bridge over the Mersey River in Widnes, Cheshire, Meghan wore a pair of earrings that has not escaped the attention of Buckingham Palace fans.
Someone has immediately attributed the earrings in gold, small diamonds and pearls, to Birks, the Canadian Maison favored by Harry’s wife (we talked about it here). In reality, the earrings bear witness to the Queen’s strong sympathy for Meghan, also recorded by the smiles during the event: it is, in fact, a gift that comes directly from the royal collection. Indeed, according to some it is the same earrings worn by the queen on the occasion of the wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton. In short, it is not about whatever earrings, but about a jewel tied to important occasions. What time, at 92, the queen has yielded to Meghan. Rudy Serra

Rivière’s savoir faire

/

Other jewels from the Savoie Faire collection by Rivière, which presented new pieces with diamonds and sapphires at Couture Show ♦ ︎

Savoir Faire is a French expression that indicates the ability to know how to move, compare and speak in every circumstance. Especially when it comes to relationships between two people. In short, savoir faire is essential to meet the partner’s desire. The Roman Maison Rivière has dedicated to this way of saying a rather large collection of jewels. As happens when the choice meets the taste of the public, other pieces are added to the collection over time. In 2018, in particular, were presented a pair of earrings with gold fringe, a necklace in the same style, and three bracelets that are added to the many variations of the collection: all the pieces use gold, small diamonds to follow the perimeter of the jewels and pearls of different colors.
The combination between the pastel color of pearls and gold is a constant by Rivière. Which, however, does not stop there. At the Couture Show in Las Vegas, for example, the Maison presented new jewelry with the classic combination of diamonds and blue sapphires, jewels that perhaps have a greater impact on the American public. This is also a demonstration of savoir faire. Alessia Mongrando

Antonini on the sugar loaf

A few more pieces of Antonini’s Extraordinaire line presented at the Couture Show in Las Vegas ♦ ︎

New unique pieces by Antonini. They are jewels of the Extraordinaire line, which the Milanese Maison has also presented this year at the Couture Show in Las Vegas. The extra pieces at the most important event organized in the USA, high-end jewelry made to measure of the selected stones, are now a classic for the brand of creative director Sergio Antonini. Even if unique pieces, however, the new rings and necklaces do not deviate from what is the stylistic signature, with pavé with stones of irregular size, as in the tested Etna or Matera collections. In addition, however, extraordinaire stones are used, such as the large sugar loaf-cut emerald. Extra pieces also three necklaces with pearls in white or yellow gold, earrings and ring always with emerald set in the center, with oval cut or cushion. Lavinia Andorno

Elie Top traveling on the stars

The new mysterious cosmos of Elie Top, between zodiac, hidden mechanisms, symbology… ♦ ︎
Secrète Cosmogonies. That is the secrets of the cosmos or, better, of the stars loved by astrologers. The zodiac signs, in spite of scientific findings, are a game of society that still thrills many people, men and women. For some, associating zodiacal signs with behaviors and forecasts is fun, for others it is a faith. For all of them the whimsical French designer Elie Top has launched Cosmogonie Secrète, a collection that reveals and obscures the zodiacal signs engraved in the jewels, which have movable elements. Jewels that the designer presented at the Couture in Las Vegas.
The passion for the stars, in any case, is not new for Elie Top, who launched his jewelery brand in January 2015, after having worked for many years with important companies and designers such as Alber Elbaz, Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent , Loulou de la Falaise, Baccarat, Roger Vivier. It is no coincidence that his first line of jewelry is called Mécaniques Célestes, which was followed by the Etoile Mystérieuse collection. All jewels are also complicated objects that seem to come out of a fantasy tale, amulets or mysterious mechanisms capable of producing spells. Who knows if Elie Top’s horoscope had predicted it. The empire of Nadia Morgenthaler

The (British) empire still strikes with the Maharaja-Belle Époque style of Nadia Morgenthaler, one of the new high-jewelery brands ♦ ︎
Can a pretty Swiss designer, who works in Geneva, live in a different universe than the clean and a little conventional Swiss society? Yes, it can, and there is no need to be rebels to propose something different. You can if your name is Nadia Morgenthaler and from five years you have inaugurated a new path in the world of high jewelry. We could call it Maharaja-Époque style, that of India part of the British Empire. Because the designer’s jewels have their own independent life that passes between the architectures that are not at all minimal, that went out of fashion between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, but also that sort of Indian baroque that traced an era in jewelry. Small pearls that draw a rounded line, spinels, rock crystal, tourmaline, small diamonds. Stones with not excessively saturated nuances, which are often hooked as pendants. The entire construction of the jewels, even the smallest ones, is never simple, yet maintains the balance of the volumes.

Just look at the type of jewelry of Nadia Morgenthaler to realize that they are unique pieces, which next to the fantasy linked to other eras are made with modern Swiss precision. No have been exception by the jewels shown at GemGenève, where the Maison has placed itself in a special area for young emerging designers. Although Nadia Morgenthaler has emerged for some time, and not just since 2013.

Alessio Boschi, Animal & Fish

The Animal & Fish series by Alessio Boschi: brooches and earrings with pearls, gold and precious stones in a whirling baroque fantasy (and cheerful) ♦ ︎
Who does not know Alessio Boschi does not know the jewelry. Or, better, he has never seen what kind of jewelry can turn into the hands of a sculptor lent to the art of composing with gold, precious stones. And pearls. But not the round ones, too perfect pearls, to put on a necklace. The pearls that Alessio Boschi chooses are extravagant, inharmonious, asymmetrical keshi pearls. Which, precisely, for this, are transformed into volumes around which to compose. For example, Alessio Boschi has chosen a series of lumpy pearls that, like a spell, come to life in the body of animals, like fish or birds.
But, be careful, those who do not know Alessio Boschi do not even know the magic. Because the Italian designer is able to create jewels that surprise at first sight, and continue to surprise once you realize that the jewel hides another jewel in turn. Like for the White Shark brooch presented in 2017: a shark with embedded stones that hides, behind a small door on the lower side, a pair of dangling earrings. Then there is the surprise of the surprise, because the earrings are, in turn, decomposable (we talked about it more widely here https://is.gd/xXKndy).
Also the rest of the Animal & Fish series is not far different. But, compared to the “animalia” series by other designers, those of Alessio Boschi have a further advantage: they are cheerful, they put in a good mood.

Royal Wedding with Yoko London

Royal Wedding Collection: Yoko London is inspired by the royal family with a family of exceptional pearls jewelery ♦ ︎
If the word London appears in your name, can you be insensitive to what happens in Buckingham Palace and surroundings? Of course not. So Yoko London launches the Royal Wedding Collection, inspired by the British royal house. With perfect timing, given that the pearls, the specialty of the London Maison, were also among the preferences of Princess Diana. Prince Harry’s mother, and now also him is arrived at the time wedding.
Pearls, ok. But those of Yoko are not any simple pearls. They are pearls with a capital letter P. Even those in this collection, which is royal, in name and in fact. The collection includes some chokers, like the one Diana often wore, and bracelets. There is also a scalloped collar necklace, with over 70 pearls graduated by size. All seasoned with diamonds, which also brighten the opacity of the pearls. For the jewels, also Tahitian pearls were used, in a palette of gray turtledove, petrol blue and violet, some of considerable size. They would worn by a queen. Giulia Netrese

Marco Bicego returns to Africa

//

Marco Bicego presents three new extensions of the Africa collection ♦ ︎
The father of Marco Bicego, Giuseppe Bicego, started his business founding a gold chain factory, in Vicenza. The success of the goldsmith’s company, however, was not enough for the designer, who created his own proposal. In fact, in his father’s company, Marco Bicego started experimenting and learning the trade, until he opened his own brand in 2000.
His collections are often inspired by the places he has visited and which have him remained most impressed, such as Jaipur, Cairo, Murano and Africa. And the latter collection, one of the most successful, now has a series of extensions, with variations on the theme for now presented on the American market: the first is Africa Turquoise, which, as in the original collection, is composed of gold spheres engraved by hand with the Florentine burin technique «perfectly imperfect». But next to the 18 carat gold there are turquoise pearls. Then there is Africa Constellation, with brilliant-cut diamonds of various sizes set in the golden pearls and Africa Stellar, with rough, unworked diamonds. The collections will be available officially during 2018. Alessia Mongrando

Mikimoto, Japanese snow

The snow seen from Japan in a new collection by Mikimoto ♦
The snow in Japan is as light as the one that falls in the United States or in the Swiss Alps. And for this it enchants in the same way. But of course, Japanese sensitivity is even more delicate. An example is the collection dedicated to snow by Mikimoto, a Japanese Maison famous for its pearls. Like most Japanese Mikimoto has a special focus on nature. The Maison’s founder, Mikimoto Kamamuri, wanted to protect nature and be inspired by creative sources from the Japanese environment to transform the beauty of the universe into the art of jewelry. Pearls, another natural element, are a perfect element, with gold and diamonds. With this collection Mikimoto has captured snowflakes, using pearls and gold worked with an embroidery that incorporates the geometry of the crystals. And, next to the poetry of the snow, a tribute to Christmas: a Western festival that, however, also like in the East. Margherita Donato

Beatrice rhymes with pearls

/

Pearls dedicated to Beatrice, the muse of Dante, in the Mayumi collection ♦
Beatrice, a character who has become eternal thanks to Dante. The greatest Italian poet, was in love with her, unattainable (it seems that Beatrice was married to the rich Folco Portinari), and placed her in Paradise, where she guides Dante in his literary visit to the celestial spheres. Traditionally, perhaps also because of its ethereal distance, Beatrice has been portrayed by painters as a girl of white complexion, with delicate and pearly features. And that’s why Mayumi, a Veronese brand specialized in pearl jewelry, has dedicated a new collection white gold, diamonds and Akoya pearls to Beatrice. The collection includes the classic types of jewels with white pearls: one-row necklaces with a small pendant, rings with a pearl or in a contrarié version with two spheres, earrings. All very traditional, regular, reassuring. For those who do not want to risk wrong choices: the pearl is a classic, like the Divine Comedy. Lavinia Andorno

If it were a tree, Roberto Coin would be a jeweler with roots in the Veneto and branches in around the world. It also formed a partnership with the University of Queensland, State of Australia, where the pearl industry and jeweler company is working by years, winning a award for research in 2016. “We are very proud of our innovation and achievements in pearl farming and our role in making significant inroads into understanding the relationship between gene expression and pearl quality”, Rosario Autore commented. years gives life to one of the most sophisticated Maison specializes in jewelery with pearls. Mikiko in silver

/

Mikiko launches a new silver collection, but pearls are always queens ♦ ︎
The story is a bit winding: in 1991, the European Institute for the Promotion of Perla began its commercialization, in collaboration with the Italian Goldsmith Federation. In 1999, the Swiss group Golay Buchel & Cie, specialized in pearl cultivation, found in the European Institute for the Promotion of Pearl a support for the creation of the first Italian branch of the group and acquired the company that changed its name in Golay spa. But in 2007, the Swiss group took another road to Japan, and Golay became an autonomous company and changed its name to Golay Buchel Italia, a unipersonous company. It is based in Vicenza and is headed by Marcel Philippe Kappelli. Golay Buchel Italia, ultimately, is on market around for 25 years and has launched the Mikiko and Nihama brands. The wire is always gold, silver and pearls.
After this premise, we come to what interests you most, jewels. Mikiko presented a new collection of silver and pearls. Silver is proposed with gold rhodium in the three colors. Jewelery design is rather traditional, but it is able to enhance the element on which the collection is centered, ie the pearls, both in the white and colored versions in different shades. The new collection of the Yvone Christa brand presented at VicenzaOro September ♦ ︎
In VicenzaOro September, the Yvone Christa New York brand was inspired by the sky. The two Swedish designers, now transplanted to the States, have dedicated the new collection to the rising moon. The collection of pendants is called, in fact, Crescent Moon. And the jewels presented have the shape of the night planet. The half moons are made with the classic style of the American Maison, that is filigree work. The pieces are silver, with the addition of small pearls and semi-precious natural stones. A style that Yvonne Clamf and Christina Söderström learned in Rome, where they studied at the Design School. Today their boutique is in New York, where from Soho has moved to NoLita (North of Little Italy), the tricolor district, amongst chefs and artists, became very trendy. Pearls with surprise by Tasaki

The Japanese pearls of Tasaki with the graft of the Nepalese creativity of Prabang Gurung ♦ ︎
After 63 years (it’s founded on January 10, 1954), Tasaki’s pearl giant will have the creative guide of a Nepalese fashion designer: Prabang Gurung. An unusual fact for a country, Japan, very jealous of its cultural identity, also for jewelery. And even more in a sector, that of pearls, where Tasaki is a flag. It is the only maison in Japan with its own pearl cultivation farm, as well as being famous for its advanced polishing technology for diamonds.
The attention to quality is so high that Tasaki has decided to select its pearls based on six different criteria: the quality of the nacre (the pearl base layer) that gives gloss and color, brilliance (light quality reflected in the interior itself), reflected light from the surface, color, shape, purity (any stains) and size. The result is the first collection signed by Prabang Gurung, who said he was inspired by the surrealism’s artistic movement and Japanese girls Ama, the famouses pearl scuba fishers. Praise to the nature of Mikimoto

Nature and sea, here is the high jewelery of Mikimoto ♦ ︎
Praise to Nature: this is the name of the new jewelery necklace of Mikimoto. Great name of Japanese jewelery, Mikimoto has a long history and a long tradition. It was founded in 1893 by Kokichi Mikimoto, who successfully created the method of cultivation pearls. In addition to the pearl manufacturing technique, Mikimoto is also famous for its jewelery creations. And a particular sensitivity is testified with the high jewelery. Nature, on the other hand, is one of the themes that always inspired Japanese culture: the Praise to Nature necklace adds to the other unique pieces an idea of the sea. It consists of an extraordinary set of pearls, sapphires, diamonds and an incredibly rare 54-carat aquamarine. The stones and pearls are mounted on 18-karat white gold. But it’s not the only great piece of jewelery dedicated to the sea, as the ocean-inspired pendant shows, with precious stones partially hidden in an imaginative frame of corals embellished with diamonds, opals and pearls. On the contrary, they are great and fine jewelry offered by affirmed Maison or run in from creators of unique pieces. The selection, made by the New York Times, simply goes against the current, with a small parade of jewels able to debunk the common use of pearls: necklace, earrings, rings sometimes, but in a context of simplicity. On the contrary, in this case the pearls are capable of amazing, even when they are white, the most common. The secret is in the re-interpretation of the role of pearl, in pairs or alone, but determined to act in tandem with the fanciful gold frames. An entire gallery to watch.

The finest golden pearls in the world

Is this the most beautiful golden pearl necklace in the world? Yes, it could be that of Jewelmer Joaillerie ♦ ︎
Who knows if it is really the most beautiful golden pearl necklace. Jacques Christophe Branellec, Jailmer’s Vice President and Ceo Joaillerie, thinks so: “This necklace exceeds our most exquisite expectations. It’s a miracle”. The pearls of the South Seas are famous for their beauty and their nuances. These pearls, in particular, were cultivated in the waters of Palawan, corner of paradise in the Philippines.
To get only one, you need 377 processing steps and five years of work, the time it takes to see if a pearl, which normally has a size of 10 to 13 millimeters, is produced by its mother oyster. And the pearls from 16 to 18 millimeters, with an impeccable surface and a perfect round shape, are even more few.

In short, perfection is rare. For this reason, it is not surprising if this necklace of 35 Palawan pearls was completed within 37 years. “Palawan is one of the most sensitive marine environments in the world. It is the center of biodiversity, “says Branellec. “When employees from our pearl cultivation companies saw the Palawan necklace, many of them burst into tears,” the manager says. The price of the necklace is unknown: who knows, it could cause the same reaction. Federico Graglia
