Christie’s between pink diamond and Wallace Chan

Exceptional Christie’s Auction in Hong Kong: an expensive pink diamond, precious stones and incredible pieces by Wallace Chan ♦ ︎
It is a sign of our times that the most expensive jewelery piece ever offered by Christie’s auction will not be sold in New York, but in Hong Kong. On November 28, the auction house in the former British colony of China will beat over 290 lots. In particular, attention will be focused on The Pink Promise, a 14.93-carat pink diamond ring and, in addition, the highest quality ratings. In fact, this is a fancy vivid pink VVS1 clarity (type IIA). The estimate has a fairly wide range: from 28 to 42 million US dollars. Pink diamonds are considered among the most precious and rare stones. There are no two identical pink diamonds: each has a unique set of shades, hues and saturation that result from the absorption of light in the diamond structure. Even today, the exact structural defect causing pink is not yet fully understood by diamond researchers, and perhaps even for this reason they are stones that continue to enchant.
For lovers of precious stones, this will not be the only diamond in the auction. There are, in fact, stones like a 8.80-carat diamond Fancy Intense Pink VVS1 Clarity (Type IIA). Estimated: $ 8.8 to $ 12 million), a 8.17-carat Pearl-sized Burmese ruby ruby ring (5.8-8 million dollars), a jade necklace (about 14.7-15.9mm) and diamonds (7.3-10 million) and a jade pendant (3.5-4.8 million).
Chan masterpieces
In addition to the exceptional stones, Christie’s also offers a number of equally remarkable pieces of legendary jeweler Wallace Chan. The sale is called Wallace Chan: The Beginning of a Genius. It is a collection created by the famous jeweler and artist in the most innovative period, among the fifties and late nineties. According to Vickie Sek, vice president and director of Christie’s jewelery in Asia, “It is a privilege to offer a selection of the finest diamonds, jewelery and signature pieces to our collectors who expect only the best from Christie’s”. 48 ciak for Recarlo

The love statement (with ring) seen by 42 filmmakers for Recarlo ♦ ︎
There is nothing better than a video to communicate something. There is nothing better than a ring to communicate love. The union between these two factors is the contest has involved 42 filmmakers from 11 countries, including Italy, the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Spain and Russia. The young directors have produced 48 short films. Promoter of this film festival is Recarlo. The theme of the movies was, in fact, a story where the protagonist is Anniversary, a ring by Piedmont Maison and, of course, he and she. The lonely is the 18ct white gold ring with round cut diamond, the classic engagement ring. Every filmmaker has interpreted the fateful moment of the ring statement in a different way: there are those who chose the classic romantic atmosphere, who used a bit of humor, who opted for the surprise.
The winner was Photo Boot, a film by Russian director Andranik Saatchyan: the action takes place in a photo box, selfie style. The second acknowledgment went to Night Light by Italian director Marcello Di Noto, which transforms a homely intimacy into an exciting statement with a sixties soundtrack. On the podium also Il Sogno Recarlo, signed by another Italian, the actor and filmmaker Giulio Scarano. Here are the movies.

The shining hearts by Recarlo

Recarlo with so many hearts in the Anniversary Love collection. Here are pictures and prices ♦ ︎
Is there a symbol of the most effective love of the heart? For sure, no. That’s why the Maison Recarlo has decided to continue her Anniversary collection with a new jewelery line, Anniversary Love. The name says it all: love and special occasions are the recipients of these jewels who keep faith in their mission even in their shape. The peculiarity of this collection is, in fact, the choice of the shape of the diamonds used, all in the shape of a heart. From bigger to smallest, even tiny ones, are all stones that have the silhouette of the symbol of love. Let’s say for those who are not expert: it’s not easy to find a cutter that can provide a high number of diamonds with this type of shape, with 58 glossy facets (among other things, it was a cut loved by Louis XVI). Maison Recarlo has managed to center the target and, looking at the many pieces that make up the collection, was not a simple business.
The idea of diamond-shaped on gold is offered in a variety of ways: for example, with diamonds lonely, or with a sole of other small diamonds, in this case with brilliant cut, to make even more bright the jewel. The same shape is proposed in the monachelle and pendant.
Hearts also feature some special creations for the models: the glittering Eternelle glider, where the diamonds alternate (with particular light effects) and the contrarié, with a swirling circle of hearts to climb. Some examples of prices, which naturally vary greatly according to the diamond carats used on the jewel: a simple heart ring with a small diamond size of 0.18 carats, costs about 1170 euros, 0.40 carats climbs to 2750 euros , and from 0.70 to 7000 euros. For rings with halo, a 0.18-carat pendant the price is 1110 euros, for 049 carats it gets to 2540 euros. For a 1.10-car Trilogy ring the cost increases to 6790 euros.

Raj Pink, king of diamonds

/

A super pink 37.30-carat diamond on auction at Sotheby’s in Geneva ♦ ︎
It’s back the big diamond season, with big expectations and (probably) big prices. In Geneva Sotheby’s will presents The Raj Pink, the largest Fancy Intense Pink diamond with a weight of 37.30 carats. This superlative and exceptionally rare diamond will be at the center of the auction dedicated to Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels on November 15th. “The discovery of a pink diamond is exceptional, but the remarkable size and intensity of the color of Raj Pink put it in the rare company of the most important pink diamonds known,” commented David Bennett, world president of Sotheby’s International Jewelery Division. The raw diamond that produced The Raj Pink was studied for more than a year after its discovery in 2015. It was then entrusted to a cutting master that highlighted its features. The result is a diamond with a special cushion cut. The name, Raj Pink, was given by the current owner of the diamond, who wants to remain anonymous. Raj is a word that in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, means king.
The Gemological Institute of America (Gia) has certified the diamond. The description is full of superlative adjectives: “stunning stone”, with shades like “an intense pink and bright, very bright.” According to Gia, “for a diamond to show a pink and natural pink like the one observed in The Pink Raj is rare, especially if it has such a heavy weight.”
The discovery of a quality pink diamond of every dimension is an extremely rare event. Of all diamonds presented to Gia every year, less than 0.02% are pink. “Only on rare occasions diamonds with vibrant and shimmering colors like Raj Pink emerge from the ground … only the most privileged and experienced in the industry know about their existence. With an unmodified Fancy Intense Pink nuance, substantial dimensions and desirable clarity, Raj Pink is definitely one of those jewels that only a few would have the honor to experience,” concluded the Gemological Institute. Buccellati in auction with Dorotheum

Buccellati jewels under the magnifying lens at Dorotheum auction in Vienna ♦ ︎
Those who are fortunate enough to own jewelry Buccellati knows that the gift she has received or the purchase she has made is not only a luxury accessory, beautiful to wear, but also an investment. If in the future you wanted to sell the jewel, you probably would get a higher price than the purchase price. It’s what the Dorotheum auction will showing to in Vienna on 19 October. Among the many jewels on sale stands a good number of pieces signed by the Maison of Milan founded in 1919, which is now owned by the Chinese group Gangsu Gangtai Holding. But style and workmanship have not changed. Buccellati is a famous brand, well-liked from time by several aristocratic families (and even in the Vatican). That is why some of the jewels for sale from Dorotheum come from the heritage of ancient noble families. For example, a diamond bracelet for 17 carats in the 1920s (estimated value: 14-20 thousand euros). But next to the jewelry of Buccellati, the auction also has a good number of valuable pieces, especially with diamonds. The top is a ring with an emerald cut of 6.21 carats (estimate: 130-190 thousand euros), but the focus is also on a Francy Intense Yellow diamond of 4.66 carats mounted on diamond clips of about 4 carats.

Graff buys the Diamond of the Century

/

Graff buys for $ 53 million the largest diamond of the century: weighs 1,109 carats ♦ ︎
It’s called Laurence Graff and probably has a diamond in place of the heart. The great British jeweler, king of diamonds, confirms this. It has, in fact, bought the world’s largest rough diamond. It cost a piece of cake: $ 53 million, or about 45 million euros. To sell the biggest gem was the Canadian Lucara Diamond. The diamond weighs 1,109 carats and is one of the largest ever extracted from the earth. Translated in grams, it weighs about 2 hectograms and it is as a tennis ball.
It was not a head shot: Graff dealed for a year on the price to get the stone. That now will become jewels. But here’s the point: how to cut such a masterpiece of nature? Graff must maximize the yield of the stone, minimizing waste. At the same time, it must value the size, but it must be suitable for use on a necklace, a tiara or a ring.
It should be noted that the great diamond had already been try to sell by Sotheby’s in June of a year ago. But no one wanted to pay for the $ 70 million required price.
The diamond was baptized Lesedi La Rona (meaning Our Light in Tswana) and was discovered in November 2015 by Lucara in Botswana, a country which became second diamond manufacturer after Russia.
It is the largest diamond discovered for over a century (the heaviest is still Cullinan, 3,016.75 carats, discovered in 1905 in South Africa). Federico Graglia

On auction a 51-carat Russian diamond

A super Russian diamond (plus five more) dedicated to the tsars ♦ ︎
The Russian mining group Alrosa announced for November an auction for the sale of a rare collection of already cut diamonds, including a giant stone of 51.38 carats. It’s one of the biggest diamonds ever put on the market. It is a round, traditional, 57-facettes diamond with a diameter of 1 inch (2.5 inches) big about the size of a man’s eye. According to Alrosa, which is a State-controlled company, is probably the most expensive diamond produced in the history of Russian jewels. The diamond is one of the five pieces made of the 179-carat Romanov raw diamond, extracted in 2015 in one of the mines of the company in the Yakutia region, in the Far East of Russia. In intentions all diamonds should be sold together with no less than $ 10 million. The Romanov name is a dedication to Tsar Peter the Great, who built the city of St. Petersburg and the Romanov dynasty, which ruled Russia for 300 years. Federico Graglia

Red to get mad

Rio Tinto presents the second largest red diamond in the world: the price is secret ♦ ︎
Riddle: it is a red, transparent stone, with a bright color, with radiant cut. What is it? No, it’s not a ruby. It is one of the rare red diamonds, one of the largest ever found, the second by size and weight. He presented it to New York with the mining giant Rio Tinto, along with other extraordinary colored stones.
The rare red diamond 2.11 carat, known as The Argyle Everglow, was the 2017 Arygle Pink Diamonds Tender star, which is the annual showcase of the rarest diamonds extracted from the Argyle mine in Rio Tinto. Argyle Everglow has been evaluated by the American Gemological Institute (Gia) as a Fancy Red VS2 diamond. Red is the rarest shade for diamonds. Suffice it to think that in 33 years from this mine Fancy Red certified less than 20 carats. The Fancy Red Argyle Everglow is the second largest Fancy Red diamond in the world after the Red Moussaieff, which has 5.11 carats. How much cost can a diamond like that? The price is top secret. Rio Tinto receives buyers’ offers in a closed envelope from dealers and collectors and does not divulge figures. Years ago, in Hong Kong, a red diamond of more than 2 carats was sold at auction for 5 million, about 2.4 every carat. For sure, according to experts, the price of these diamonds is not comparable to that of ordinary colorless diamonds. These are rather to be regarded as works of art.
Rio Tinto has featured 58 diamonds, totaling 49.39 carats, including four reds, four violet reds, two purple and one blue. The Argyle mine is located in the eastern region of Kimberley, Western Australia. Federico Graglia

Messika moves for three

Messika presents three new pieces for the classic Move collection. With a unusual inspiration ♦ ︎
She has been moving for ten years, but she is not yet tired. So to celebrate the anniversary, Valerie Messika has thought of making room for Move, the most famous of the Parisian Maison, with three new pieces. They were presented at Couture and it is a necklace, with a wide mesh chain, one  ring and one cuff. They are all in gold and, like the rest of the jewels of the now classic Move collection, they have three diamonds that move.
Since everything has its own story, the Move collection also has it. The three diamonds are a reminder of when Valerie was a child and her father, an expert gemologist and trader of diamonds, gave her three stones to play with. Hoping, of course, that she do not lose the stones. Those three diamonds have been the inspiration for an infinite set of variations on the theme of moving stones within jewelery. The idea liked it. And now, Valerie Messika has decided to take another step forward: the two rings are dedicated to two characters. Ring Ron is named in hommage to the sculptor Ron Arad, while the Pei cuff has a link with architect Leoh Ming Pei: sinuous curves for the first and sharp corners for the second. Cosimo Muzzano

This diamond is a surprise

A diamond bought for £ 10 sold at 656,750 from Sotheby’s
Occasionally, a painting bought at a marketplace reveals (or hides) a masterpiece of a master and is immediately re-evaluated. More rarely, it turns out that a jewel is more precious than it was believed. Let’s just say it: usualy it happens exactly the opposite. But it is not the case of a lucky one who bought a ring for 10 pounds (about 11.5 euros) by accident with what he thought was a big crystal. Instead, it was a 26-carat diamond, which was sold now by Sotheby’s in London for £ 656,750, about 775,000 euros. The ring was sold after a hectic bargaining lasting only two minutes: before the auction the experts had estimated the jewel at a maximum price of £ 350,000. Do not, however, hope to have the same luck when you buy a ring at a market. Another interesting item of the auction was a brooch by Cartier worn by Margaret Thatcher and sold for the benefit of the Endeavor Fund, which supports the recovery of injured, military and sick and injured women. Other jewels for sale were from the collection of King Farouk of Egypt. Federico Graglia

The Jonker 5 sold for 5.3 million

A legendary diamond, Jonker number 5, sold for 5.3 million from Christie’s ♦
The sale of Magnificent Jewels by Christie’s in Hong Kong totaled $ 79.4 million. Of this nursery, 5.3 million were spent for a diamond, the Jonker number 5, above its pre-sale estimate of 2.2 to 3.6 million. The diamond weighs 25.27 carats, has a rectangular cut, type IIa, color D, VVS2 clarity. The Jonker No. 5 is part of the legendary diamond collection cut from a rough 726 carat stone, discovered by Jacob Jonker in South Africa in 1934. That stone was, in that moment, the fourth largest diamond ever found. It also has a long history: that diamond had bought it from Sir Ernest Oppenheimer’s Diamond Corporation. Then, it was sold to Harry Winston in 1935 and was exhibited during the celebrations of the Coronation Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in London, and then at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
Harry Winston later cut the big diamond with help by Lazare Kaplan: the result is 13 pieces with a weight of 3.53 to 142.90 carats, although the largest was later reduced to 125.35 carats to increase his brilliance.
Another piece of value sold in Hong Kong is a necklace created by Edmond Chin for Boghossian. It consists of 11 perfect emeralds that shape the shape of a small palm, with a diamond outline. Sales price: $ 6 million. Federico Graglia

Christie’s has a heart of 12.9 million

A heart-shaped diamond weighing 92-carat and sold to 12.9 million dollars: it was the top lot at Christie’s auction in Geneva ♦
Among jewels, but also wines and watches, Christie’s in Geneva has totaled 113.7 million dollars. It is useless to make comparisons, since the end result of an auction is also conditioned by individual pieces that can raise or lower the pitch. As for jewelery and precious stones, it was waiting for the heart-shaped diamond: it was sold for $ 15 million, at a price per carat of $ 163,016. It’s a new record in auction, says Christie’s, for a diamond with this particular cut, surpassing the previous $ 10.9 million record set just by Christie’s in May 2011. The initial diamond estimate ranged between 14 and 20 million. The diamond, color D, weighs 92.15 carats and was set by Boehmer et Bassenge in a sautoir.
To sell it to an anonymous buyer (by phone) it took only three minutes. This too is a record, of speed. But a good result was also obtained by an oval cut Burmese ruby. Even in this case, the bid price was halfway between the minimum and maximum of the estimate: $ 12.9 million (the starting point was between 10 and 15 million). Another price tag for auction carat was achieved by a blue diamond, cushion cut, fancy intense, almost 8 carats. It was awarded 12.7 million. Federico Graglia

A pair of blue diamonds and a rose sold by Sotheby’s for a record $ 57.4 million. And it is also a record for a Piaget ring ♦
A mythological record. To mark a new star price for jewels were Apollo and Artemide. No, they are not the gods of Olympus, but divinity of jewelery: Apollo and Artemis enchanted the sale of Sotheby Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in Geneva. The two diamonds got the best price ever on auction for a pair of earrings: $ 57.4 million. The buyer (for now anonymous) has subsequently renamed them. The fancy vivid blue diamond is now called The Memory of Autumn Leaves, while the intense pink fancy has been named The Dream of Autumn Leaves.

Siamese brothers
A pretty expensive poem. The two diamonds were sold separately. The vivid blue fancy, 14.54 carats, for 42 million, while the pink diamonds, 16 carats, for 15, 4 million. «It has been a privilege for Sotheby’s to be entrusted with the superb Apollo Blue and Artemis Pink, which have now been renamed The Memory of Autumn Leaves and The Dream of Autumn Leaves», commented David Bennett, world president of the international jewelery department and chairman of Sotheby’s Switzerland. «The results from today’s sale – which saw more than 90 per cent of lots sold and three new world auction records – yet again underline the strong demand for top quality diamonds, gemstones and jewels. I am delighted that the stones will remain together as earrings. This has been a wonderful inaugural jewellery sale at Mandarin Oriental, Geneva which far exceeded expectations, with a total of over $150 million. We are greatly looking forward to the upcoming auction of Fine Jewels at Sotheby’s rue Diday in Geneva on the 1st of June».
The purple color
As mentioned by Bennet, in fact, the auction marked a third record. An intense purplish pink fancy, 7.04-carat yellow, mounted on a Piaget ring, was awarded for $ 13.3 million, with a price tag of 1.9 million.
Lots 272 – 326 were also highly appreciated, including a private collection with precious pieces and gems of great value: they were sold for 15.9 million double the estimate. 96% of these lots were sold. A 32.42-carat-shaped pear-shaped Harry Winston diamond doubled its estimate and was sold for $ 3.3 million. An emerald ring, always of Harry Winston, has quadrupled its estimate to $ 929,465. A brooch with rubies and diamond sets and a pair of Van Cleef & Arpels clip earrings totaled $ 477,551. Federico Graglia

Van Cleef & Arpels wins the heart

At Christie’s, Van Cleef & Arpels diamond beats the heart shaped diamond. Here are the results of the Magnificent Jewels auction ♦
Christie’s closes the Magnificent Jewels auction in New York with a result of $ 35.2 million, with 90% of the sold lots and 85% in value. The day’s champion was the Lot 151, which was a Van Cleef & Arpels ring with an emerald-cut, D-color, perfect inside, of about 22 carats. The jewel was sold for $ 2.6 million, almost the top of the range of the starting estimate. A ring with diamonds and a big ruby of 8,6 karat, however, in proportion was go better: estimated at between $ 600 and $ 800,000, it has touched the 2 million. It is no finish interest to pink diamonds. A ring with a pink diamond with an unusual rectangular cut with beveled corners of over 3 carats was beaten for 1.9 million.
There was a lot of curiosity on the auction, also for a heart-cut stone: a 15.87-carat diamond suspended from a platinum chain. It was sold in compliance with forecasts for $ 1.86 million. Finally, a Cartier bracelet of 1930s, platinum and diamonds, Art Deco style: sold for $ 991,000. Tom Burstein, head of Christie’s jewelery department in the US: “Our goal was to align the contents of the April auction with what is currently in demand and provide estimates that fit well into the context of today’s market prices. This approach led to a very strong sell-through resulting from competitive bidding on diamonds, colored stones and signed jewelry, thereby demonstrating strengths in the most vital areas of the jewelry market.” Federico Graglia

Auctions, auctions, auctions: spring as usual proposes for the jewelery a special stage. Bonhams also joins to this auction waltz with a series of yellow diamonds, and not only, to its auction in New York on 24 April. The ring was composed of Tiffany using stones with a late nineteenth century cut. An old style that has its charm. Other prominent piece is a necklace with 17 diamonds, fancy yellow, to 47.34 carats (estimate between 350,000 and 550,000 dollars). Of note among the many proposed jewelry, a Cartier brooch of 1935, with a ruby marquise cut, pretty rare for this stone, with diamonds and baguette-cut, plus six cabochon rubies cut sugar loaf and diamonds.
