The Smithsonian Museum unveils to the public the newest addition to its collection: a butterfly brooch made up of 2,328 gems. The Royal Butterfly Brooch was created in 2009 in Taiwan by artist Cindy Chao, who donated the piece to the American museum, making it the first Taiwanese gem to be part of the Gem Collection. The precious stones of the object add up to a total of 77 carats: they include colored and iridescent sapphires, diamonds, rubies and garnets.
