Dangerous sea for jewelry

Be careful to sea water and swimming pools: ruin your jewelry. Here’s what you must do.
Summer is the time of year when there the most danger for your jewelry. The enemy is called water: that of the sea or the pool. In both cases your jewelry risks a lot. The salt content of sea water is a corrosive substance which can cause serious damage to rings, earrings or necklaces. Even the precious metals, like gold and platinum may be ruined. First, the gold in your jewelry is often an alloy with other metals: for example, what to 18K contains 25% materials such as nickel, or copper or silver. These metals in contact with the sea water is easily to spoil. Even platinum, although more resistant gold, suffers in prolonged contact with salt water.

Vietato fare il bagno con anelli e bracciali, specie se sono bijoux
It is forbidden to swim with rings and bracelets, especially if they are bijoux

Welds danger. One weakness of the jewels are the welds. If a jewel is well done they will not see with your eyes, but there are. The salt can corrode precisely the most delicate parts of the junction between the different parts of a jewel. Another danger is given by the waves or the impact of the jewel caused by swimming. A stroke while swimming due to a collision with the water has a certain relief in a delicate structure such as, for example, a ring. For this are not uncommon in cases of rings in which the jaws which stop the stone will soften and end up leaving free the diamond, or any other gemstone. Even more ruinous is the effect of water of sea on bijoux, that are made with less resistant metals and are usually lighter.

Se per errore si fa il bagno in piscina o in mare con i gioielli, meglio lavarli subito dopo con acqua corrente
If by mistake you bathe in the pool or in the sea with your jewels, it is better to wash them immediately afterwards with running water

Mist up the stones. Another negative effect is that of salt on precious or semi-precious stones. Not only do you risk losing them for ever, but swimming in the sea will make them less bright because of the salt that is deposited on the surface. A bathroom between the waves of the sea is also not recommended for the pearls. The jewels have the same dangers in the swimming pool: it is better to take them off, and then you can take a bath.

Anche l'acqua di una piscina può essere nociva per i gioielli
Even swimming pool water can be harmful to jewelry due to chemicals dissolved in the water

How to fix it. And if you forget to take them off before you dive? The best thing to do is wash the jewels in cold or lukewarm water with a drop or two of mild detergent. After holding them to soak for about ten minutes the jewelry should be cleaned with a toothbrush with very soft bristles. The gems are polished with a cloth.

Un bracciale d'oro: può essere indossato in spiaggia, ma lontano dalla salsedine
A gold bracelet: it can be worn on the beach, but away from the salt

The Baroque sea of Massimo Izzo

The unique jewels of Massimo Izzo, jeweler and sculptor of Syracuse inspired by tradition and the Mediterranean Sea ♦

About Massimo Izzo wrote also the New York Times. From Syracuse to Manhattan distance it is great. Yet the fame of the Sicilian jeweler is like the waves that start at one end of the earth and through all the oceans. The marine metaphor is no accident: the jeweler-artist is, in fact, an admirer of the waves and nature hidden beneath the sea surface. Most of his creations, celebrated around the world and sold in the two boutique in Syracuse and Milan, is dedicated or inspired by what the sea offers. Recently Massimo Izzo was invited by Elisabetta Cipriani gallery, London to create a series of works following his original aesthetic and superb craftsmanship which would further push his imagination and creativity. The result is six rings of great impact, made with blackened silver, sapphires and hypnotic opals.

Sciara, Blackened-silver, Australian opal, blue-sapphires ring

A truly amazing story, that of Izzo. Born in Messina, but grew up in Syracuse, he said that at 14 he was already fascinated by jewelry. Before moving on international stage, he start from the art school of the State of Syracuse, where he followed an experimental program in jewelery, and has worked for Salvatore Cassone, the largest jeweler in Syracuse. After learning the craft to the bottom, the Sicilian designer has soared thanks to an unusual order: the engraving of a silver plate on the occasion of the visit to the city of Pope John Paul II.

He has also worked with another famous Sicilian, the Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore, who commissioned the jewelry worn by Monica Bellucci in the film Malena. The jewels of the Sea collection are made in 18 carat gold and represent octopuses, sea urchins, crabs, starfish. All pieces are refined and processed rhapsody of colors and shapes, often using raw gemstones: resemble most to sculptures than simple jewelery. His work has been compared to that of another great Sicilian jeweler Fulco di Verdura, although the style is completely different. Sure, you can read in the work of Izzo a scent of Sicilian Baroque architecture that gave an impression of entire neighborhoods of the island city. And it is a style that has fascinated, according to his account, even Santo Versace, Tim Burton and JK Rowling. It is not hard to believe.

Under an ancient sea with Chiara Passoni

The jewels of Chiara Passoni, precious stones and ancient teeth of the prehistoric shark ♦ ︎

Now the jewels of the sea have more jewels. But they are not colored anemones, dolphins that jump on the waves or corals that empurple exotic atolls. The new jewels of the sea or, better, dedicated to the oceans, are those of Chiara Passoni. They are not, however, simple jewels inspired by the kingdom of Neptune. Because Chiara Passoni has a symbiotic relationship with the sea: probably, if she could, she would live in a shell like the Botticelli’s Venus. For years the Milanese designer has sailed the seas all over the world. Over and under. On large and small boats and as divers, deep in the seas. And in her network has collected an absolute passion for the marine world as well as, more generally, for the natural balance. This harmony has been translated into his jewels.

Her Jurassic capsule collection goes even further: it embraces nature in an ultramillenary time frame, indeed, prehistoric.

La sua Jurassic capsule collection va anche oltre: abbraccia la natura in un arco temporale ultramillenario, anzi, preistorico.

The jewels, in fact, are made using fossil teeth of megalodon, the great ancestor of the shark. Fossil teeth that are unique pieces, combined with sapphires and diamonds, gold and silver. The designer also emphasizes that the words “Respect Your Nature” are engraved on every jewel. In all there are 12 pieces, from the necklace to the bracelet, with diamonds and shades of sapphires. The jewels are declined in different shades: from blue to pink to black. Each piece has a (very long) history and is different from the others: from the abyss to the jewelry of today, it is a journey lasting millions of years.

Luxury goes sailing with Gismondi 1754

The historic Maison Gismondi 1754 is based in Genoa, a seafaring city. Massimo Gismondi, CEO and mind of the company, loves the sea. Two aspects that present the new collection of the Italian brand, shown at Vicenzaoro, which is called Vela. As with boats driven by the wind, the Vela collection also has two characteristics: it is practical, easy to wear and to combine, but it is also elegant. The style and volumes of the jewels are inspired by the individual elements that characterize sailboats, such as the snap hook closure, but also by the curves of ropes and cords used to equip the boats. The Vela collection maintains the style of Gismondi 1754, with surfaces in rose gold and diamonds, and consists of bracelets, rings, earrings and necklaces.

The sea has always been my source of inspiration. I was born there and for me it is essential to look at it every time I can also experience it actively. An outing on a sailing boat, with an eye to infinity is also an opportunity to reflect on the little things.

Jewels for the summer: the Naviblue marine-inspired collection by Roberto Bravo

Born in Italy, in Vicenza, as a small goldsmith’s company, Roberto Bravo emigrated to Istanbul years ago. But one of his reference markets is now the Russian one. In short, presented as an Italian brand, it is actually an international brand. And this mélange of cultures and styles is also reflected in its collections, which are influenced by the goldsmith tradition that flourishes in Veneto and the liveliness that resonates in the Grand Bazaar.

Trollbeads at the sea

Bracelets and new modular elements in the Trollbeads summer collection ♦ ︎

All at sea, all on the beach, all with jewels suitable for the season. Companies that offer jewelry with seasonal collections do not miss out on the summer. It is precisely when the clothes become light, or almost completely disappear, that the worn jewels can be seen more. In the case of Trollbeads, a Danish Maison born near the sea, here is the collection dedicated to the summer and, in particular, to the sea.

And, if anyone had doubts, the bracelets and modular elements of the collection are inspired by the sea waves. The new collection introduces five new beads and a silver clasp. There are seashells, tides and seaweeds to feel comfortable even on the beach. And, of course, to wear when the holidays are over, so as not to lose the memory of the hours spent at the beach. Three shades of the modular elements to add to the bracelets: blue, yellow and an octopus violet.

At the seaside with a futuroRemoto

Wearing jewels on the beach or, worse, during a bath in sea water is inadvisable and, in many cases, dangerous (see also: Sea and jewels, here’s what to do). But nothing prevents you from wearing jewelry that is reminiscent of the marine environment. Maybe with a little humor, as in the case of the jewels designed by Gianni De Benedittis, founder of the futuroRemoto Apulian brand. The Takerisks collection, for example, includes a triple ring featuring the sea, the motorboat and a shark. Because the sea can also reserve surprises.

Homage to Capri by Chantecler

Capri, Mediterranean island in front of Naples, destination of dreams, loves and jewels. Those of Chantecler, for example. The Maison founded in 1947 and led by the Aprea family is the most celebrated on the island. Famous for its bell-shaped jewels, but also for its high jewelery, Chantecler has wanted over the years to pay homage to Capri with a series of jewels of different types that recall the charm of the island.

Campanella Luna Caprese
Campanella Luna Caprese

Let’s start with high jewelry. Luna Caprese is a little bell in sapphires and diamonds that reproduces the legendary Faraglioni, together with the Chantecler cockerel (symbol of the Maison), which in Edmond Rostand’s short story tells that its singing has the power to drive away the darkness and bring out the light of the new day.

The Et Voilà collection is another type, which with the Capriness is enriched with a set of marine links, in pure silver, reminiscent of the shapes of the sculptures of the fifties, and covered on one side by a deep blue, almost blue and on the other only silver. The blue of the enamel is a shade that recalls the so-called “blue air”, a fusion between the chromatic gradations of the sky and the sea. The set, consisting of necklace, bracelet and earrings, is the symbol of everything that has made the Capri experience magical.

Capriness also for the pendants of the Campanelle collection, which become more ironic, with colored enamel stripes, and the Logo collection, with earrings and pendants for over 35 years symbol of the Capri spirit, welcomes a cockerel with a rainbow. Capri has never been so precious.

Swarovski spring between shells and the desire for the sea

//

The spring of Swarovski, as always, brings many news. The Austrian brand renews its collection twice a year which, once again, is made up of several homogeneous lines. One of these Swarovski trends concerns the link with nature, for example, with the predominance of shell-shaped designs and motifs inspired by the sea. In short, a way to be ready for summer.

Swarovski, collezione Shell
Swarovski, collezione Shell

The Shell collection includes, obviously, shell-shaped jewels, the perfect symbol for the marine world. Polished metal and shiny crystals are the elements with which the jewels are made. The highlight is the versatile hole earrings. The Sculptured Shell collection was conceived with the same mood, also here with the silhouette of oversized shells, which also reveal small surprises if observed closely. Nude shades, with pearl details with a baroque taste create contrast with the liveliness of the coral shade, reminiscent of natural coral reefs. Are you ready to go to the beach?

A turquoise for your tanning

Turquoise, the perfect stone to bring out the tan of summer. But pay attention to … ♦ ︎

Which jewel is better for your tanning? The answer is easy: the turquoise (if you want to know everything about turquoise click here. It is one of the stones used in jewelry since antiquity. But the word turquoise is more recent: it dates back to the seventeenth century and derives from the French word used for Turkish, that is to say, from Turkey, and this is because it was brought to Europe right through Turkey, from mines in the historic province of Khorasan in Persia.

Orecchini con turchese, oro rosa, diamanti
Orecchini con turchese, oro rosa, diamanti di Chantecler

The turquoise color has always been used to bring out the hue of the skin darkened by the summer sun. The contrast between deep blue color and brown or beige nuances is immediately visible.

Collana con turchesi e pelle abbronzata
Collana con turchesi e pelle abbronzata

But, be careful: even if the combination of tanning and turquoise is perfect, it isn’t advisable to wear jewelry with turquoise in the sun. There is a reason: often the turquoise stone is treated to improve its color with oil, wax or plastic. The use of wax is a treatment used since antiquity. But the stones treated with oil or wax tend to “sweat” if they are exposed too much to the sun and can develop a white patina on the surface. Of course, you can always bring from the jeweler to restore the original color, but it is better if you can avoid it.
In other cases what you think is a turquoise is, instead, residual powder of the working held together by glues, resins and coloring materials: this is more likely if the jewel has cost very little. It is not true turquoise, even if it is sold as if it were real stone. Also in this case there is a greater risk of damaging the jewel with exposure to the sun or water.

Kelly Xie at the sea

The sea seen through the eyes of the Chinese designer Kelly Xie: many colors and a fairy tale ♦ ︎
In a few years Kelly Xie has conquered the international scene. His small Maison was founded in 2012 in Shanghai, China. Like other designers in the great Asian country, she decided to take the best from Western and Eastern traditions. In her style happily mix the forms codified by European jewelry in the last two centuries with a taste and, above all, the technique of Chinese tradition. It is no coincidence that Kelly Xie studied Chinese painting with its watercolor nuances and the classic enamel technique for a decade. But her jewels are painted above all with the use of colored stones. Very colorful, as it is in the oriental taste, sometimes a bit fairytale, in which they mix so many bright colors. One of her most representative collections is Sea. The sea is mainly interpreted through its manifestations: shells and anemones that seem moved by the waves and a small siren. Yellow and white gold, diamonds, sapphires, tourmalines, garnets and golden baroque pearls are the tools used for the Kelly Xie collection. Rudy Serra

Under the water with Giulia Barela

Giulia Barela, architect, designer, founder of a jewelry workshop in Rome. Her latest work, however, is not inspired by the classic lines of the Eternal City, but to the world of the sea, a world that has already been a source of inspiration for the designer. But this time Giulia Barela did not stop at the beach: the collection Under the Sea includes minnows, small jellyfish, sea stars that become mini sculptures for earrings. The collection, in fact, only covers jewelry to wear the ears. Perhaps to hear the sound of the waves, who knows. A curiosity: while the press release speaks of the collection Under the Sea, if you go on the Giulia Barela site you will find that the collection is referred as Deep Sea: in short, mingle the waters. In any case, the jewelry are made with the technique of lost wax casting, are handmade in bronze, while the butterflies and pins are silver 925. In the case of small jellyfish, the stones are blue or green hematite. Alessia Mongrando

The sea in a ring with Ferrante

Bijoux trendy by Pietro Ferrante. Rings, to be precise, defined “street rock tattoo”: they are silver and other materials, unisex, intended for a high number of decibels in the evening, perhaps in combination with the classic black Seventy leather jacket. Curiously, though, the collection of these bijoux is not inspired by the Sex Pistols or the Rolling Stones or also for the Guns N ‘Roses. In contrast, Ferrante has created this mini capsule thinking At the most famous short story by Ernest Hemingway, the old Man and the sea. The chevalier ring is large, with a mouth wide shark open (even if in the novel is a Marlin, a species of swordfish in the Caribbean). Another ring has a fisherman with a skin sunburned. And then a lighthouse, bracelets with anchors and fishing hooks: literary references to the symbols of the sea, for those who love him. Cosimo Muzzano
