The abstract art of Swati Dhanak

The jewels inspired by the abstract art of Swati Dhanak, a designer of Indian origin who lives and works in New York ♦ ︎

Her grandfather, an Indian jeweler, moved to Dubai in the 1950s, at the beginning of the economic boom that transformed the city. Swati Dhanak was born in the city of the Emirates, and since she was a child she has attended the family jewelry workshop. But the jewelry store in Dubai was not enough for the designer, who moved to New York. At the same time, however, direct experience with jewelery work was fundamental to her choices.

In the American city, Swati Dhanak studied at the university, but she also worked for Armani and Chanel. Between East and West, with a solid history behind her and the influence of the family, the designer created her own brand, with a style that however has nothing that can remember the oriental style. Indeed, earrings and rings in 18K white or yellow gold and diamonds are inspired by abstract art, with unusual compositions of geometric and asymmetrical elements. Certainly they are jewels with a strong personality and a good creative dose, perhaps even the grandfather would have approved.

What are bridge jewelry?

Do you know what bridge jewelry is? This name has been used to indicate a large part of jewelry. If you don’t know what bridge jewels are, then, here’s an opportunity to learn it.

Bracciale fiorito Pandora Garden
Pandora Garden Blumenarmband

Of course, as with all categories, there are nuances. In some cases there are jewels that can be defined differently, a bit like hair color: there are those who are not blonde or even brunette, but somewhere in between. But this does not mean that jewels have long been divided into categories: high jewelery, jewelery, bridge, fashion, to which is added costume jewelery. As it is clear following this cataloging, jewels defined as bridges are halfway between high-end ones and those much more related to fashion.

Collana con pendente ad anelli
Necklace with ring pendant by Morellato

The jewels defined as bridge, in short, is a category that bridges the gap between low-end costume jewelery and high-end jewelery. Bridge jewelry is made with metal such as silver, 9 karat gold, vermeil (gold plated silver). They can be enriched with crystals or with the least expensive semi precious stones or even with synthetic stones and small cultured pearls. In large part this type of jewel is very popular and is represented by major brands, such as Pandora, Thomas Sabo or Morellato, but also individual Maison such as Monica Vinader, Giovanni Raspini or John Hardy, to name a few. And, of course, there are also small artisans who offer bridge jewels.

According to a survey conducted a few years ago of about 120 jewelers in the United States, the percentage of bridge jewelry in overall sales has remained the same or has increased over time. Nearly half (48%) of jewelers said their bridge jewelry sales have remained pretty much the same as the percentage of overall sales in recent years, while another 43% said they have increased.

Why have bridge-type jewels been successful? The factors that convinced the buyers are two: the very low price, also because it is not particularly sensitive to fluctuations in gold prices, and a design that in many cases has nothing to envy to that of more expensive jewelry. In any case, there are also notable differences between bridge jewels.

Jewels as haiku by Kayo Saito

Soft shapes, jewels like petals, ornaments that recall the flowery necklaces of Hawaii, but with Japanese delicacy and sobriety: Kayo Saito is a designer who works in Kent, in the United Kingdom. Her jewels are a celebration of nature filtered through the simplicity of the shapes. Kayo Saito studied metalworking at the Japanese art institute, but also a master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in 2001. With metals, the designer seems to play with delicate and sculptural shapes that recall the art of Haiku, mini poems summarized in three lines, which become figurative art if expressed with Japanese calligraphy.

Spilla in oro e giada
Brooch in gold and jade

Her jewels look like gold feathers or leaves, earrings and bracelets inspired by pods like those of legumes. They are made of 18-karat gold and silver, in thin sheets and often rhodium-plated to give them new colours. Kayo Saito also uses the technique of combining repetitive elements that expand organically, as in the black rhodium plated and silver pod bracelet.

All about titanium jewelery

Do you want to buy a titanium jewel? First, you must read this guide to find out the benefits, price and features of titanium jewelry ♦ ︎

From some years it is increasingly used in high jewelry: titanium is a metal that has so many unique features. But what are the differences with gold and platinum? Is it worth buying a jewel made of titanium? How to Clean and Preserve a Titanium Jewel?

Orecchini in titanio e diamanti
Earrings in titanium and diamonds by Margherita Burgener

Features. Titanium is a lightweight metal with excellent resistance, three times more than steel, but is much lighter. It is silver-like shiny white when it is pure. Another interesting feature is that it does not cause irritation, allergies or discoloration of the skin: if you suffer from irritation when wearing jewelery, titanium can be the right solution. It is no coincidence that it is also well used for piercings. Titanium is used in jewelery because it does not break or bend (unless it is very thin). Another positive aspect: it do not spoils with sea water or chlorine of the pool, as well as water directed.

Orecchini Rosa, in titanio, diamanti, madreperla bianca grigia
Vhernier, Rosa earrings, in titanium, diamonds, gray white mother-of-pearl

In jewelery. Titanium is used in jewelery, but its resistance makes it difficult to process. That’s why titanium jewelry is fairly rare: not all jewelers can blend it (it takes 1723 degrees Celsius, ie 3,135 degrees Fahrenheit, to blend this metal). Only in the late 1990s technology enabled the use of titanium in jewelry, initially, for simple rings and then for more complex pieces.
Titanium is also used to make gold more resistant: in some cases it is enough to add 1% to yellow metal to eliminate the softness of pure gold.
Titanium and colors. Another feature of titanium used in jewelery is that it can be colored. It can, in fact, be anodized to vary the thickness of the surface oxide layer, with a variety of vibrant colors. This process occurs through heating or electric shock: the metal releases its oxides and modifies its color according to the temperature and duration of the process. You can find anodized yellow, pink, red, purple, blue or black titanium.

Braccialetto Vita Savers. Oro bianco, titanio, con 560 diamanti
Life Savers bracelet. White gold, titanium, with 560 diamonds

Curiosity. Titanium was discovered in Cornwall in Great Britain by William Gregor in 1791, but the name was decided by Martin Heinrich Klaproth and refers to the titans of Greek mythology.
For who is recommended. Titanium jewelery can be a good solution for those who want to wear them even when they are caught with some manual activity, from kitchen to childcare, or to DIY. In addition, it is very unlikely that it causes allergies: another point in its favor.

Sabba, orecchini in titanio e diamanti
Sabba, titanium and diamond earrings

The cost. Titanium is not an expensive metal: it is easily found in nature and even though it has a fairly complex workmanship, it does not have a high price. The cost of a jewel in titanium will then be determined by the type of shape, more or less complex, and hence the number of hours it takes to work. Obviously, another fundamental aspect is the value of stones that can be used in jewelery.

Giovanni Ferraris, titanium ring, diamonds, blue sapphires

How to Clean Titanium. It is simply cleaned with water and, if necessary, a diluted drop of neutral liquid soap. Use a soft toothbrush. Titanium is a tough metal, but cleaning can ruin other materials with which jewel is made, like stones.

Phillips House from a cork to luxury

Phillips House, a jewelry brand born from the cork of a wine bottle. Phillips House, based in Miami, Florida, has a rather unusual history. The genesis would begin with founder Lisa Phillips’ first date at 17 with her future husband, Robert Frankel. An occasion bathed by Lisa from a 1955 Château Léoville Poyferré. A fine wine which, due to its pleasant taste, or for the pleasant company, induced Lisa Phillips Frankel to keep the bottle cap. Then transformed into a pendant to which she added an 18-karat gold element, and tied to a leather lace. The first signs of the passion for jewelry, then continued in the following years in an unstructured way, even if Lisa Phillips has a background in financial studies at Boston University, where she was born.

Years later, in 2009, her passion was transformed into a profession. Phillips House was born with the addition of daughter Danielle Frankel Nemiroff, designer of the Maison with a passion for dance and fashion, as well as the administrative contribution of her son and husband. Now the brand is a point of reference for the Miami area. 18 or 14 carat gold and diamonds are the basic elements of Phillips House jewels, often with an original design, without being bizarre.

Eden Presley the second life of Gwen Myers

He is self taught. He started working at an Italian restaurant, Trattoria Dell’Arte, in New York and went on to a job in marketing at The Fireman Hospitality Group. So how did Gwen Myers manage to become a jewelry designer with her brand, Eden Presley? The avenues of jewelry are endless but, in this case, they also received help from their husband: the first jewels produced by the designer, in fact, were gifts that she modified and allowed her to take her first steps into the world of precious jewels. And the name of the Maison? Simple: Eden Presley brings together that of her two daughters.

Gwen Myers’ business has been going on since 2010 and continues successfully. To characterize the jewels of the Maison are above all the colored gems, often used with unusual combinations and in large numbers. Tourmalines or emeralds, labradorite or moonstone plus, as always, diamonds, are gathered in clusters or in sequence on rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings, mounted on 14-karat gold or silver. It is an elegant, colorful type of jewelry designed to be worn every day.

The flight of the eagle seen from Youra

Rabaa Saleh S. Al-Anqari is a Saudi designer, born in Riyadh, with a great passion for diamonds, painting, colors and creativity. The synthesis of all this is called Youra, a brand of jewelry that is distinctly different from the ordinary. The name has a root in the Arabic word (you) which means to be seen. And, indeed, Youra’s jewels can be seen quite a lot when worn. The last two letters, ra, refer to the designer’s name.

Anna Sheffield’s sustainable jewelry

She was born and raised in New Mexico, which she remembers every time she cooks a spicy dish. Then, Anna Sheffield studied sculpture and fine arts in San Francisco. But she also worked in a tattoo parlor (as evidenced by her arms covered in drawings), in Saudi Arabia and in a small town in Virginia. For just over ten years, however, she has been a successful jewelry designer, with two stores in New York and Los Angeles. Since she considers jewels to be talismans, they may have brought her luck.

In any case, she is appreciated for several reasons. First of all for the ability to blend design, architecture and some echoes of indigenous craftsmanship. The second reason is that she has focused more on rings, reinventing the classic jewel destined to seal the engagement. Anna Sheffield has also created a Maison that is particularly attentive to the environment: she uses recycled gold which, she says, is not lacking and therefore it is not necessary to extract it. And she chooses carefully selected diamonds, with certified origin and sustainable extraction. Finally, she founded the Future Heritage Fund, in collaboration with the New Mexico Community Foundation, which grants funds to a number of non-profit cultural, environmental and educational organizations in New Mexico: at least 20% of Future Heritage sales are destined for this collection.

Halloween jewels

/

Like every year (except 2020, perhaps) Halloween is an opportunity to party. A dark party, of course, which therefore requires suitable clothing. But not only that: even the jewelry department of each woman adapts to the general context. Here, then, are high-class jewels, or with a price that suits anyone, to celebrate the day of darkness.

By the way, maybe not everyone knows that the word Halloween is the contraction of All Hallows’ Evening, but it also has other names such as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve. The celebration was born in the countries of Christian worship on October 31, the eve of the feast of All Saints. In fact, the festival was dedicated to the memory of the dead, including saints and martyrs. Although, according to many, the festival is a legacy of ancient Celtic festivals, in particular the Gaelic festival of Samhain, which marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Today, however, for many Halloween has lost its original meaning and is above all a good reason to party.

Butterflies by Chopard for Mariah Carey

In 1997 Mariah Carey made her debut with the album entitled Butterfly. A quarter of a century later, in 2022, the butterfly turned into a Chopard jewel. The Maison presented two lines: Happy Butterfly of high jewelery and the Happy Butterfly x Mariah Carey Collection, designed with the accompaniment of the American singer. Obviously the jewels have the silhouette of the butterfly. Winged moths, in fact, are one of the topos of jewelry. But they don’t go out of fashion for this: a jewel in the shape of a butterfly always offers an image of lightness and joy.

The collection is also due to the relationship between Mariah Carey and Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director of Chopard: the singer performed for the Swiss Maison at the Cannes 2019 Festival, when traditionally the brand presents the Red Carpet Collection of high jewelry. The Happy Butterfly collection includes three pieces of high jewelery with pavé diamonds: a pair of earrings, a necklace and a ring, all set in ethical and Fairmined certified 18K white gold, in addition to the Happy Butterfly x Mariah Carey Line, which is a line of fine jewelry in 18-karat gold, diamonds and carnelian.

The photographers present therefore have the function of focusing on the images that will travel around the world. Here are some of the jewels seen on the Lido, the island of Venice that hosts the screenings of the competing films.

Daring Sarkisyan

The irresistible career in the jewelry store of Arman Sarkisyan ♦

If you have a few thousand dollars (or euro, does the same) and you want break free of desire to wear an exclusive jewel, you can consider the production of Arman Sarkisyan. It is one of the most popular designers of the moment, and perhaps not by chance: his creativity is the result of the Armenian blood flowing in his veins. Apparently, he tells that even his father, a jeweler with 53 years of profession, he looked at him with surprise when Arman has taken the first steps in the jewelry. His father taught him the secrets of the trade, and Arman did the rest. With some aspect to emphasize: for example, Arman uses gold to 22 carats, particularly softer than normally used in jewelry.

He loves to work also with oxidized silver, unconventional precious gemstone, daring combinations, innovative compositions. His unique pieces are rare and disputed by his fans. The history of the brand that bears his name began in 2004, and has since racked up an impressive number of prizes reserved for designers. He lives and works in Los Angeles and, as he specifies, “in a house full of artists and thinkers.”

From New York to Tokyo with Milamore

//

Milamore was founded in 2019 by the CEO and creative director George Root. The brand, Milamore, is a tribute to Root’s grandmother, Milagros, word which in Spanish means miracle. But for the family members was called Mila. The abbreviation, combined with the Italian word for love, amore, has turned into Milamore. But the curious aspect is another: the jewels are designed in New York, but handmade in Japan.

There is one reason: George Root was born in the Philippines, but grew up in Japan and moved to New York only in 2014. Since then he has decided to become a bridge in the luxury sector between East and West. Before becoming the creative director of Milamore, he worked for publishing in the fashion sector, and published a book on globalization in the Japanese market. In short, a man with multiple interests. Finally, Root took on the role of CEO and creative director of Milamore. The brand creates high quality jewelry, without compromising. Prices range from $ 600 to $ 13,000, again in 18-karat gold and precious stones.

How to combine jewelry with skin color

How to combine jewelry with the color of your skin. Here are the stones and the type of metal to choose ♦ ︎
You burn yourself in the first ray of sunshine. Or at the sea in two weeks you become chocolate brown. Or, again, you have a skin that does not stand out in the dark. Different colors, opposite shades: which jewelry to match the color of the leather? Or, better, what are the gems and shades of gold that are best with your skin?
To identify stones and metals that enhance the tone of your skin, you must start with a simple operation: identify exactly what is the nuance of your body and, in particular, of your face. Obviously you probably know it already. But further examination can be useful.

Può essere indossato anche come bracciale o collana

The color of the veins. For example, if the veins seen under the skin on the wrist or neck are blue or light blue, the skin is almost certainly white or pink, very clear. It is easy in this case to be a skin that easily reddens in the sun. If, instead, the vein color tends to be dark, with a greener shade, the skin will be less clear and will tan more easily. Of course, the skin can be even darker, with infinite nuances: it is good, however, to compare the colors to understand well what is your own tonality.

Match the colors. Ok, each person has their own tastes and every choice isn’t debatable, but there are gems with colors that seem to stand out better on a specific skin rather than on another.

Light skin. For example, lighter skin seems to benefit from bold colors like red rubies or spinels, garnets, tourmalines, deep blue tanzanites, blue sapphires, blue topaz, or purple amethysts. On the contrary, a white or very light skin goes well with an equally light metal, such as white gold, silver or a pale yellow gold. In addition to the stones it must mention the pearls: the white ones are fine.

Dark skins. Warm colors, such as those of sapphires or yellow topazes, citrine, orange garnets, and green, jade or peridot emeralds are suitable for darker skin. The skin of Latin or dark shades will also be enhanced by metals such as yellow gold or copper. Thaiti pearls are particularly recommended for dark skin.
And the diamonds? We did not mention the most desired gemstones, the diamonds. And there’s a reason: they go well with any skin. Matilde de Bounvilles

Ana-Katarina’s confidential eyes

Do you want to have close or, better, wear the glance of your lover? At the end of the eighteenth century the fashion spread of making jewels that had a small reproduction of the lover’s eye, to be worn clandestinely. And this is what Ana-Katarina Vinkler-Petrovic proposes, an American designer who creates the jewels of the Eye Love collection with the shape of the eyes. And, if you want, you can also replicate the look of a loved one if you send a photo of the eye to the designer, who then will transmit it to his craftsmen to create a bespoke jewel.

Ana-Katarina was born in Boston to Serbian and Slovenian parents, an architect and a painter. Before becoming a designer, when she was studying at university, she was also in Belgrade to write war correspondences, during the conflict of the early nineties and, moreover, she embarked on humanitarian activities. In 2007 she started dealing with jewelry.

Her jewels-eyes, to which were then added the lips, also seem to have liked some royal families of the Middle East. Ana-Katarina also chose to use recycled, fair-trade reused materials. It is part of Ethical Metalsmiths and Agta (American Gem Trade Association), passionately supports ethical and sustainable practices in the creation of its collections. His Eye Love collection is made up of cameos carved in the shape of an eye in blue agate on 18-carat yellow gold and embellished with sapphires and diamonds.

The jewels by Ti Sento Milano

/

Ti Sento Milano is a brand with an Italian name, but owned by the Dutch group Ibb. Now the brand presents the new spring / summer 2022 collections. It is always silver jewelry, which is the Maison’s specialty. In some models the jewels use pavé stones, rose gold plating, combinations of white stones and mother of pearl, for a combination of warm and cold shades, but also with platings that simulate a semi-precious stone such as malachite.

The brand’s jewels are all produced in 925 sterling silver and rhodium-plated to increase their shine. Rhodium plating is also an additional protection against abrasion and natural oxidation. Sometimes, for some pieces of the collection, a yellow or rose gold plating is used, while single stones and pavé are cubic zirconia, or hard stones like turquoise. The shapes are traditional and the prices in the category average: from around 50 to 250 euros for the most precious pieces.

The jewelers that close in Russia

The real drama is that of human lives lost in vain, of overwhelmed lives, of lives that will never be the same. But the war in Ukraine also causes a smaller, much smaller, but not irrelevant, drama related to jobs, in the West and in Russia, which will be lost to a stupid aggression. Both Russians and Westerners are dealing with the inevitable sanctions announced in time, before the invasion, which will have an impact on the accounts of companies, for example those of jewelry, as well as on the people who work there. The collapse of the ruble and the blocking of the credit card service, in fact, led many jewelry companies to suspend their business. Maybe they will close completely or reopen, if it all ends, but who knows when.

At the time of writing this short article, the last Western brand to close the boutique in Moscow was Swarovski, while Tiffany was among the first to lower the shutter, along with Vuitton. Others have already done so, others will follow. The list of Western Maisons that have opened a boutique in Moscow, St. Petersburg or other Russian cities is long. In Moscow, for example, they have a boutique Chopard, Van Cleef & Arpels, Akillis, Piaget, De Beers, H. Stern, Stephen Webster, Carrera y Carrera, Mauboussin, Mont-Blanc, Dior, Chaumet, Pandora, Frey Wille, Cartier , Trollbeads, Vuitton, Thomas Sabo, Bulgari, Pomellato, Adamas, Damiani, Buccellati. Other brands, such as Pasquale Bruni or Alcozer, are distributed in non-owned jewelers, or in airport duty free shops.
Boutique Damiani a Mosca

According to an analysis concerning Italian jewelery conducted by ICE (the state body for exports) in general, the Russian buyer is oriented towards medium or medium-high level jewelery. Also according to the analysis, the daily use of rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces, especially in the capital and large cities, is now seen as a form of accessory to one’s image, not necessarily combined with luxury clothing or for events special. The favorite items of Russian women are rings, chains and earrings; men prefer chains and bracelets, while brooches and necklaces are bought by a minority of the female population, while typically male jewelry such as cufflinks and tie pins are in low demand. In recent years, however, silver jewelery has been more successful than gold, due to the unfavorable ruble-euro exchange rate. Italy (2019 data) exports about 77 million jewels to Russia, about 22 million France, the United States 21 million and the United Kingdom 23 million. However, the one who exports the most to Russia is China with over 88 million.
