The flight of the eagle seen from Youra

Rabaa Saleh S. Al-Anqari is a Saudi designer, born in Riyadh, with a great passion for diamonds, painting, colors and creativity. The synthesis of all this is called Youra, a brand of jewelry that is distinctly different from the ordinary. The name has a root in the Arabic word (you) which means to be seen. And, indeed, Youra’s jewels can be seen quite a lot when worn. The last two letters, ra, refer to the designer’s name.

In Rabaa Saleh S. Al-Anqari’s curriculum there is a master’s degree in educational administration and leadership, but also a passion for jewels and stones. She studied at GIA London and continued with a diamond specialization at IGI Dubai. In 2018 she created Youra with the aim of creating jewelry with universal beauty. Indeed, the goal has been achieved: Youra offers fine jewelry, but also unique pieces such as the extraordinary Shades of Date bracelet, inspired by the theme of the eagle and made of gold, tasvorite, white, yellow and brown diamonds, emeralds (over 18 ). Bracelet which, among other things, was materially made in Italy. The same eagle motif was then used for earrings and pendants.

Anna Sheffield’s sustainable jewelry

She was born and raised in New Mexico, which she remembers every time she cooks a spicy dish. Then, Anna Sheffield studied sculpture and fine arts in San Francisco. But she also worked in a tattoo parlor (as evidenced by her arms covered in drawings), in Saudi Arabia and in a small town in Virginia. For just over ten years, however, she has been a successful jewelry designer, with two stores in New York and Los Angeles. Since she considers jewels to be talismans, they may have brought her luck.

In any case, she is appreciated for several reasons. First of all for the ability to blend design, architecture and some echoes of indigenous craftsmanship. The second reason is that she has focused more on rings, reinventing the classic jewel destined to seal the engagement. Anna Sheffield has also created a Maison that is particularly attentive to the environment: she uses recycled gold which, she says, is not lacking and therefore it is not necessary to extract it. And she chooses carefully selected diamonds, with certified origin and sustainable extraction. Finally, she founded the Future Heritage Fund, in collaboration with the New Mexico Community Foundation, which grants funds to a number of non-profit cultural, environmental and educational organizations in New Mexico: at least 20% of Future Heritage sales are destined for this collection.

Peter Schmid, fantasy out standard

The artistic jewels of Peter Schmid and his Atelier Zobel ♦ ︎
He was ranked second to the Agta Spectrum Awards, the American Gem Trade association in the Men’s Wear category. But Peter Schmid, German designer-artist in Kostanz, Germany, actually works outside of usual categories. It’s hard to set in a category his way: he follows a unique road with its Zobel Atelier.
Growed in the rural area of Ostrach, it was immediately attracted to design, art, travel, and culture around the world. His training was characterized by different interests: he studied watches, jewelry, and dealt with the Japanese urushi technique of lacker. Thanks to a scholarship he attended a course at Escuela Masana in Barcelona.

But it is in jewelery, with its unique pieces, which gains his fame. Part of the stones that seem to be particularly interesting to build around the jewel, which is a sort of painter’s palette on which he expresses his imagination. Jewelery is, in fact, small collections made almost always with a meticulous and imaginative workmanship.

Halloween jewels

/

Like every year (except 2020, perhaps) Halloween is an opportunity to party. A dark party, of course, which therefore requires suitable clothing. But not only that: even the jewelry department of each woman adapts to the general context. Here, then, are high-class jewels, or with a price that suits anyone, to celebrate the day of darkness.

By the way, maybe not everyone knows that the word Halloween is the contraction of All Hallows’ Evening, but it also has other names such as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve. The celebration was born in the countries of Christian worship on October 31, the eve of the feast of All Saints. In fact, the festival was dedicated to the memory of the dead, including saints and martyrs. Although, according to many, the festival is a legacy of ancient Celtic festivals, in particular the Gaelic festival of Samhain, which marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Today, however, for many Halloween has lost its original meaning and is above all a good reason to party.

Butterflies by Chopard for Mariah Carey

In 1997 Mariah Carey made her debut with the album entitled Butterfly. A quarter of a century later, in 2022, the butterfly turned into a Chopard jewel. The Maison presented two lines: Happy Butterfly of high jewelery and the Happy Butterfly x Mariah Carey Collection, designed with the accompaniment of the American singer. Obviously the jewels have the silhouette of the butterfly. Winged moths, in fact, are one of the topos of jewelry. But they don’t go out of fashion for this: a jewel in the shape of a butterfly always offers an image of lightness and joy.

The collection is also due to the relationship between Mariah Carey and Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director of Chopard: the singer performed for the Swiss Maison at the Cannes 2019 Festival, when traditionally the brand presents the Red Carpet Collection of high jewelry. The Happy Butterfly collection includes three pieces of high jewelery with pavé diamonds: a pair of earrings, a necklace and a ring, all set in ethical and Fairmined certified 18K white gold, in addition to the Happy Butterfly x Mariah Carey Line, which is a line of fine jewelry in 18-karat gold, diamonds and carnelian.

The jewels of the Venice Film Festival

The jewels, together with clothes with less and less fabric, are also for 2022 the protagonists of the Venice festival. The Venice International Film Festival, number 79 in history, is one of the world events that offers greater visibility. It is therefore logical that the actresses try to show their best, helped by the great jewelery houses that lend their jewels to sparkle on the red carpet. The photographers present therefore have the function of focusing on the images that will travel around the world. Here are some of the jewels seen on the Lido, the island of Venice that hosts the screenings of the competing films.

Daring Sarkisyan

The irresistible career in the jewelry store of Arman Sarkisyan ♦

If you have a few thousand dollars (or euro, does the same) and you want break free of desire to wear an exclusive jewel, you can consider the production of Arman Sarkisyan. It is one of the most popular designers of the moment, and perhaps not by chance: his creativity is the result of the Armenian blood flowing in his veins. Apparently, he tells that even his father, a jeweler with 53 years of profession, he looked at him with surprise when Arman has taken the first steps in the jewelry. His father taught him the secrets of the trade, and Arman did the rest. With some aspect to emphasize: for example, Arman uses gold to 22 carats, particularly softer than normally used in jewelry.

He loves to work also with oxidized silver, unconventional precious gemstone, daring combinations, innovative compositions. His unique pieces are rare and disputed by his fans. The history of the brand that bears his name began in 2004, and has since racked up an impressive number of prizes reserved for designers. He lives and works in Los Angeles and, as he specifies, “in a house full of artists and thinkers.”

From New York to Tokyo with Milamore

//

Milamore was founded in 2019 by the CEO and creative director George Root. The brand, Milamore, is a tribute to Root’s grandmother, Milagros, word which in Spanish means miracle. But for the family members was called Mila. The abbreviation, combined with the Italian word for love, amore, has turned into Milamore. But the curious aspect is another: the jewels are designed in New York, but handmade in Japan.

There is one reason: George Root was born in the Philippines, but grew up in Japan and moved to New York only in 2014. Since then he has decided to become a bridge in the luxury sector between East and West. Before becoming the creative director of Milamore, he worked for publishing in the fashion sector, and published a book on globalization in the Japanese market. In short, a man with multiple interests. Finally, Root took on the role of CEO and creative director of Milamore. The brand creates high quality jewelry, without compromising. Prices range from $ 600 to $ 13,000, again in 18-karat gold and precious stones.

How to combine jewelry with skin color

How to combine jewelry with the color of your skin. Here are the stones and the type of metal to choose ♦ ︎
You burn yourself in the first ray of sunshine. Or at the sea in two weeks you become chocolate brown. Or, again, you have a skin that does not stand out in the dark. Different colors, opposite shades: which jewelry to match the color of the leather? Or, better, what are the gems and shades of gold that are best with your skin?
To identify stones and metals that enhance the tone of your skin, you must start with a simple operation: identify exactly what is the nuance of your body and, in particular, of your face. Obviously you probably know it already. But further examination can be useful.

Hyderabadfascia

The color of the veins. For example, if the veins seen under the skin on the wrist or neck are blue or light blue, the skin is almost certainly white or pink, very clear. It is easy in this case to be a skin that easily reddens in the sun. If, instead, the vein color tends to be dark, with a greener shade, the skin will be less clear and will tan more easily. Of course, the skin can be even darker, with infinite nuances: it is good, however, to compare the colors to understand well what is your own tonality.

Match the colors. Ok, each person has their own tastes and every choice isn’t debatable, but there are gems with colors that seem to stand out better on a specific skin rather than on another.

Light skin. For example, lighter skin seems to benefit from bold colors like red rubies or spinels, garnets, tourmalines, deep blue tanzanites, blue sapphires, blue topaz, or purple amethysts. On the contrary, a white or very light skin goes well with an equally light metal, such as white gold, silver or a pale yellow gold. In addition to the stones it must mention the pearls: the white ones are fine.

Dark skins. Warm colors, such as those of sapphires or yellow topazes, citrine, orange garnets, and green, jade or peridot emeralds are suitable for darker skin. The skin of Latin or dark shades will also be enhanced by metals such as yellow gold or copper. Thaiti pearls are particularly recommended for dark skin.
And the diamonds? We did not mention the most desired gemstones, the diamonds. And there’s a reason: they go well with any skin. Matilde de Bounvilles

The jewels by Ti Sento Milano

/

Ti Sento Milano is a brand with an Italian name, but owned by the Dutch group Ibb. Now the brand presents the new spring / summer 2022 collections. It is always silver jewelry, which is the Maison’s specialty. In some models the jewels use pavé stones, rose gold plating, combinations of white stones and mother of pearl, for a combination of warm and cold shades, but also with platings that simulate a semi-precious stone such as malachite.

The brand’s jewels are all produced in 925 sterling silver and rhodium-plated to increase their shine. Rhodium plating is also an additional protection against abrasion and natural oxidation. Sometimes, for some pieces of the collection, a yellow or rose gold plating is used, while single stones and pavé are cubic zirconia, or hard stones like turquoise. The shapes are traditional and the prices in the category average: from around 50 to 250 euros for the most precious pieces.

The jewelers that close in Russia

The real drama is that of human lives lost in vain, of overwhelmed lives, of lives that will never be the same. But the war in Ukraine also causes a smaller, much smaller, but not irrelevant, drama related to jobs, in the West and in Russia, which will be lost to a stupid aggression. Both Russians and Westerners are dealing with the inevitable sanctions announced in time, before the invasion, which will have an impact on the accounts of companies, for example those of jewelry, as well as on the people who work there. The collapse of the ruble and the blocking of the credit card service, in fact, led many jewelry companies to suspend their business. Maybe they will close completely or reopen, if it all ends, but who knows when.

Boutique De Beers a Mosca
Boutique De Beers a Mosca

At the time of writing this short article, the last Western brand to close the boutique in Moscow was Swarovski, while Tiffany was among the first to lower the shutter, along with Vuitton. Others have already done so, others will follow. The list of Western Maisons that have opened a boutique in Moscow, St. Petersburg or other Russian cities is long. In Moscow, for example, they have a boutique Chopard, Van Cleef & Arpels, Akillis, Piaget, De Beers, H. Stern, Stephen Webster, Carrera y Carrera, Mauboussin, Mont-Blanc, Dior, Chaumet, Pandora, Frey Wille, Cartier , Trollbeads, Vuitton, Thomas Sabo, Bulgari, Pomellato, Adamas, Damiani, Buccellati. Other brands, such as Pasquale Bruni or Alcozer, are distributed in non-owned jewelers, or in airport duty free shops.
Boutique Damiani a Mosca

According to an analysis concerning Italian jewelery conducted by ICE (the state body for exports) in general, the Russian buyer is oriented towards medium or medium-high level jewelery. Also according to the analysis, the daily use of rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces, especially in the capital and large cities, is now seen as a form of accessory to one’s image, not necessarily combined with luxury clothing or for events special. The favorite items of Russian women are rings, chains and earrings; men prefer chains and bracelets, while brooches and necklaces are bought by a minority of the female population, while typically male jewelry such as cufflinks and tie pins are in low demand. In recent years, however, silver jewelery has been more successful than gold, due to the unfavorable ruble-euro exchange rate. Italy (2019 data) exports about 77 million jewels to Russia, about 22 million France, the United States 21 million and the United Kingdom 23 million. However, the one who exports the most to Russia is China with over 88 million.

The precious wood of Nalj

From the Venice Lagoon, or from Africa, Indonesia … in the name of nature. Annalisa Mirizzi and Mimmo Demattia are the two jewelry designers of Nalj, a small Apulian brand based in Polignano a Mare, a town that stands on a rocky spur and is a tourist destination. The two designers have chosen to use different types of wood to make their jewels. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings are therefore composed of kauri, millennial New Zealand wood, or American walnut, Lebanese cedar, olive, oak, ebony, wenge, accando semiprecious and semiprecious stones, 925 silver and gold. But not only. Another idea of Nalj, in fact, is to use the wood of the Venetian briccole,

The briccole of Venice are those oak poles planted in the middle of the water to facilitate the direction of the boats that ply the lagoon. The briccole last for decades, but periodically (after about five to ten years) they must be replaced. The jewels of the Nalj line, therefore, reuse this wood tempered by the wind of the Venetian lagoon to make their own jewels. Years ago, for example, with this wood Nalj presented a collection in combination with the luxury motorboat brand Riva.

Homi Fashion & Jewels moved to mid-March

/

After Vicenzaoro, the covid is also postponing the Homi Fashion & Jewels Exhibition, an event dedicated to fashion jewelery and accessories. The event was scheduled from 18 to 21 February. Instead, it was repositioned from 11 to 14 March, again within the Fiera Milano Rho exhibition center. It will therefore be in partial coexistence with Micam, the International Footwear Exhibition, scheduled for March 13 to 15 together with The One Mmilano, Salone dell’Haut-à-Porter. The hope is that the decline in infections will make the atmosphere more serene and, above all, favor a greater influx of visitors.

“Aware that physical fairs are essential for the business of companies in the fashion sector, the organizers have once again united in the decision to reposition, keeping faith with the claim #BetterTogether but above all after having listened to the needs of the market”, is the message of the organizers. Which coincides with that of the operators.

The jewels of the tsars

It was found a rare catalog that contains 406 pictures of jewels and gems belonged to the czar of Russia.

For nearly a century, thery a mystery. But now on the jewelry that belonged to Tsar it opens a new chapter. It was indeed found one of the few surviving examples (about 20) of a vintage catalog Bolshevik, an inventory of 406 jewelery seized by the revolutionaries to the Russian royal family. The catalog dates back to 1925 and is now also available online, as other 200 other rare and historically significant books on gems and jewelry, on archive.org site. The photographs are of course in black and white, but the volume is interesting because it shows, in addition to the crown jewels are exhibited in Russian museums, including pieces have disappeared.

At this link you will find the official document.

According to Dona Dirlam, director of the Gia library, which has retrieved the rare book, in 1925-1926, the Bolshevik government has published this catalog with the idea that the Romanov jewels would never have been sold.

The jewels presented in catalog are all belonged to the czars, beginning with the reign of Peter the Great, in 1689, until the end, with the last Emperor Nicholas II, who was killed in 1917. Among the 406 treasures there are the Imperial set with the Scepter which 189 carat diamond, the imperial globe, with a sapphire of 200 carats, the Great Imperial crown, and the bridal wreath. The restart of Anzie Jewelry

The threads of life are difficult to decipher. And, sometimes, they surprise. For example, a new story of a completely different kind can arise from a tragic event. This is the case of Anzie Jewelry, founded by a Canadian woman, Anzie Stein. Before becoming involved in jewelry, Anzie was an established artist and created paintings and engravings. Her husband Barry, however, was diagnosed with cancer. From that experience came the idea of creating a line of jewelry to help raise funds for those affected by the disease. This was in 1999.

The business then continued successfully in Montreal and today the designer is joined by her two daughters, Jaclyn and Joanna. The jewels are simple and cheerful, to be worn every day, in the classic style of everyday luxury. Anzie Jewelry’s style is defined as eclectic, reflecting the spirit of Montreal and the classic French woman who is effortlessly chic. The jewels are small in size, which makes it possible to wear several at the same time. The jewels are in 14 or 18 carat gold, or in silver, with diamonds, multicolored sapphires or semi-precious stones such as turquoise or moonstone.

The abstract art of Swati Dhanak

//

The jewels inspired by the abstract art of Swati Dhanak, a designer of Indian origin who lives and works in New York ♦ ︎

Her grandfather, an Indian jeweler, moved to Dubai in the 1950s, at the beginning of the economic boom that transformed the city. Swati Dhanak was born in the city of the Emirates, and since she was a child she has attended the family jewelry workshop. But the jewelry store in Dubai was not enough for the designer, who moved to New York. At the same time, however, direct experience with jewelery work was fundamental to her choices.

In the American city, Swati Dhanak studied at the university, but she also worked for Armani and Chanel. Between East and West, with a solid history behind her and the influence of the family, the designer created her own brand, with a style that however has nothing that can remember the oriental style. Indeed, earrings and rings in 18K white or yellow gold and diamonds are inspired by abstract art, with unusual compositions of geometric and asymmetrical elements. Certainly they are jewels with a strong personality and a good creative dose, perhaps even the grandfather would have approved.

Doris Hangartner, jewelry and chocolate

/

The five senses, but above all the palate, which celebrates the combination of chocolate and jewels. It is the original and creative idea of Doris Hangartner ♦ ︎

There are two things that make a woman happy: jewels and chocolate. Instead, there is only one woman who has decided to combine the two elements: Doris Hangartner. She has a very varied curriculum behind her: after graduating in Gemology at the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica (California), she worked for jewelry companies, in particular as a gemologist, but also dealt with antiques and vintage jewelry.

I cioccolatini abbinati alle gemme

How she came up with the idea of combining chocolate and jewelry is not known. But the marriage is part of a broader philosophy of the brand, which is based in Zurich, Switzerland (not surprisingly the homeland of chocolate). Doris Hangartner’s goal, in fact, is to identify a person’s personality in order to find affinity with a gem. In short, a jewelry that involves the five senses. For example, peridot inspires smooth flavor of matcha (finely ground powder of green tea leaves, with the same color as the bud) combined with notes of jasmine and cedar surround the toasted almond in a special praline. Or a shocking but delicious splash of vodka, absinthe, peppermint and lime are the components of another praline, filled with liquid alcohol and dedicated to Paraiba tourmaline, the house specialty. Gem chocolates are handmade by a traditional Maison in Zurich (they are excellent, we can assure you). In short, each chocolate represents a gem: the imperial topaz (chocolate, honey, incense, orange and elderflower), red spinel (nougat, hot pepper and szechuan pepper, star anise, sesame and fleur de sel).

But, perhaps to prevent someone from eating a peridot or sniffing a garnet, you decided to evolve the idea. For example, combining essences and scented candles with jewels, to satisfy the olfactory buds. Without forgetting hearing, with Gem Dance, Let’s Tango, a ballet inspired by red spinel and tango music, created with internationally renowned dancers and choreographers such as Oleksandr and Sergiy Kirichenko and the Stradivari Quartett. Ah, yes, there are also jewels: after this premise, it is easy to understand that stones have a prominent role. They are lively, strong stones with personality. Used in jewelry thanks to the good and nice creative director of the Maison, Karen McGlashan.

Simon Teakle’s stellar vintage jewels

Not everyone likes the jewels of the latest collection, or those related to the fashion of the moment. On the contrary, there are those who love jewels that have a history behind them, created by great fashion houses, perhaps owned by famous women. In short, the type of jewelry that is often sold at auction by the major companies specializing in auction sales. Jewels that, however, can be purchased even without participating in one of the Magnificent Jewels auctions that are held periodically in Geneva, or in Hong Kong, London and New York.
