Jewelery, even Hong Kong ko

Even Jewelery & Gem World Hong Kong said stop: no live fair. The event will take place, but in digital format from 27 to 29 October. Is not the same thing. The company that manages the fair, Informa Markets, has decided that covid also bans this appointment dedicated to jewelry. Hong Kong is the largest jewelry fair in the world, with thousands of companies and buyers arriving every year from every corner of the Earth: 40,000 visitors in 2019. But the uncertainty is too much and it is not possible to guarantee a smooth running of the event. The Hong Kong fair will return in a year, in September 2021, and will be held both live and online.

The digital event in October, Jewelery & Gem Digital World, will include meetings on digital products, industry forums, discussions and practical seminars on gemology. Informa Markets took over the jewelry events in 2018 when it acquired Ubm Asia. The other jewelry fair in the Asian city is Jewelry & Gem Asia Hong Kong (formerly the June Hong Kong Jewelery & Gem Fair) held in June, also that victim of the coronavirus.
The canceled fair was originally scheduled for September 13-19 at two locations: AsiaWorld-Expo for loose precious materials and Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center for finished jewelry. But for the pandemic it had been moved to November 9-13. But even this solution turned out to be too optimistic.

Flowers and colors by Nak Armstrong

Anthony Camargo and Nak Armstrong had founded the Anthony Nak jewelry brand. It seemed like a perfect match. And, instead, the two partners separated in 2010: things that happen. That was the starting point of Nak Armstrong, a designer who cultivated a passion for fine painting. In particular, Nak painted beautiful patterns on silk, which he then turned into fancy scarves. Until the launch of his brand, which became a success and was awarded numerous awards.

At the beginning of 2011 the first jewelry collection arrived, suspended between architecture, design and fashion. The choice of gems reflects a rare sensitivity in the combinations of shades, and they take the form of floral compositions. In fact, before becoming a designer of precious objects, Nak Armstrong studied architecture: a background that he uses in the composition of the volumes of his jewelry collections. He has also developed his own techniques for making jewels and setting stones. For example, with a special technique that serves to fix wavy baguettes and tapered baguettes in a ruched pattern that he calls plissé stone. It goes without saying that Nak’s new life in Austin, Texas also includes a new partner, indeed, husband.

Leonori high jewelry with Victoria

When a jewel remembers a person, it offers something more. When an entire collection is a tribute to a small human being, the value still increases. This is the case of the Victoria collection by Leonori, which takes its name from the last born in the Maison: Baby Victoria. The collection includes bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings in yellow and pink gold, with diamond finishing, and with an original and graceful design. They are precious jewels but, at the same time, easy to wear on any occasion.

The collection, however, also includes a special piece, which Baby Victoria will probably appreciate when it is older: it is a ring with a fancy yellow diamond in the center, enriched by a precious lace canvas made with 244 white diamonds. Although it is a particularly precious jewel, it should be remembered that high jewelery is part of the DNA of Leonori, an Italian Maison born in 1962 on the initiative of Agostino Leonori, who has always used diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies for his collections. Now the company has reached the third generation, represented by the two sisters Elisabeth and Eleonora, who have launched the brand on the international market. And the Victoria collection seems can will be appreciated by everyone.

Luxury jewelry? Vivrelle lends them to you

Would you like to show off a Bulgari jewel, but you don’t have enough money to buy it? Or maybe you prefer Van Cleef & Arpels? Or, again, by Cartier? In the United States they found the solution: it’s called Vivrelle. The idea is of Wayne and Blake Geffen and it is very simple: a club that offers those who sign up the opportunity to wear luxury brands. For now, the service is reserved for the US, but the founders plan to extend it to other countries. By the way: in addition to jewelry, Vivrelle also offers bags, clothes and other designer products. The idea was liked, also because it allows you to easily change wardrobes and jewelry.

It works like this: club membership costs a minimum of $ 99 a month, or 199 or 279. In the first case (Classique), you can borrow one item per month with an estimated retail value of less than $ 4,000. With the second option (Couture) you can borrow one item per month worth more than $ 4,000, including rare, unique and limited edition pieces. The third possibility increases the loan to two objects at a time: one piece from the Classique wardrobe and one object from the Couture wardrobe.

One of the most successful aspects is that borrowed clothes or jewelry can be kept for as long as desired. Shipping costs are included in the subscription. The high spheres of Elie Top

His jewels are reminiscent of the romantic atmospheres of the mid-nineteenth century, between devices to scan the sky, mechanical dolls, the first scientific laboratories: Elie Top has the merit of offering a type of refined, completely different jewelry, intended for a select few. Who, in any case, knows how to appreciate his creations that use the principles of mechanics applied to jewelry. His idea is to make jewelry that can be placed in the past as well as in the future. He did it.

The today Middle Ages of Erica Molinari

From the Olympic luge to the jewels: it is not a curriculum that is often encountered that of Erica Molinari. Although the name is Italian, Erica is American: she was a member of the Olympic Luge Team for 18 years and participated in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Winter Games. But, leaving the ice descents, she decided to undertake another competition, this time between jewelry designers.

Perhaps inspired by its Italian origins, she has chosen a style that refers to ancient times, the Middle Ages, knights and round table, with a Byzantine touch. Her jewels, mostly charms and pendants, are made of 18 carat gold and oxidized silver, sometimes with the addition of diamonds, and carry symbols or writings. For example, the Maltese cross, or the hand, hearts. The appearance is that of jewelry found in an ancestor’s trunk. Yet, with this countercurrent choice, opposed to modern minimalism, Erica Molinari raised curiosity and achieved good success. After all, past centuries always have their charm.

The rings can also hide the coronavirus

/

Do jewels hide the evil coronavirus? Doctors sound the alarm. And, in fact, it would be enough to reflect: of course, they can constitute a danger, in particular the rings. So you don’t have to wear rings until the health emergency is over? The answer is no, but …

Lavare spesso le mani
Lavare spesso le mani

The alarm involving jewelry comes from the United States. Rochelle Walensky, head of the infectious diseases division at Massachusetts General Hospital, wrote an email, published by the Usa Today newspaper. “In a situation in which we are, with extraordinary measures to limit the Covid-19 transmission, I think the removal of jewelry rings when washing hands is a wise step forward,” he said. Watches are also part of objects that can come into contact with the virus and become dangerous vehicles of infection.

But there is no need to avoid wearing rings or watches, as long as you often wash your hands scrupulously. And, while we’re at it, you can take the opportunity to also clean the jewels, starting with the rings (on gioiellis.com you will find many tips on how to proceed in the section Da sapere).

According to Walensky, in fact, studies on coronavirus have shown that germs can live between the skin of the finger and the metal of the rings for some time, even if there is no reliable data on how long the germs can resist in that condition. Another expert questioned by the newspaper, Nikita Desai, a pneumologist at the Cleveland Clinic, reiterates: “When health workers prepare to activate procedures in sterile conditions, such as surgery, the hands must be washed and without rings, watches and jewelry. This significantly reduces the risk of spreading the disease, thanks to the cleanest hands possible.” According to Desai, viable viruses were detected up to four hours after exposure on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 2-3 days days on plastic and stainless steel, in short, clean hands and jewels.

The impact of the coronavirus on the world of jewelry and gold

/

What impact will coronavirus, aka Covid19, have on the world of jewelry and gold? Try to answer Juan Carlos Artigas, director for Research and Investments of the World Gold Council, association of the main gold mining and trading companies. In essence, the expert traces two scenarios: the most positive one, with an emergency destined to resolve itself in a short time, a few weeks. And a worse scenario, with a coronavirus that breaks down like a scourge even in the western world: this could lead to lower sales of jewelry but, at the same time, to a higher price of gold.

Le cinesi amano il lusso
Le cinesi amano il lusso

At the heart of gold consumption, however, it is inevitable to put the epicenter of the epidemic, China. With a premise: according to Artigas, it is wrong to make a comparison with SARS, another epidemic that hit China between 2002 and 2003. In that case, in fact, the impact on health conditions (number of infected and dead) is was clearly minor.
cin1
Acquirenti cinesi a Baselworld

As for China, for example, it can already be said that the Chinese demand for jewelry has been significantly lower than last year. Also because the Chinese buy jewelry especially in the first and fourth quarter of the year. The decrease in sales is currently around 10-15%. Then there is the reflection on the price of gold, which traditionally goes up when crises of various kinds face the world. Today China, explains the World Gold Council, is the largest gold market, contributing 30% of consumer demand in 2019.
Pepite e lingotti
Pepite e lingotti

Some of the effects of the coronavirus are already visible from the increase in trading volumes on the Shanghai Gold Exchange, the Chinese gold exchange, which has seen investor purchases. But eventually the potential deceleration in consumer demand could have a more noticeable effect on price than in 2003.
Precauzioni per il coronavirus
Precauzioni per il coronavirus

In summary, due to the coronavirus the demand for gold in the first quarter can drop by at least 10-15%. Whether demand resumes or continues to subside will depend on the duration of the epidemic and its impact on economic growth.

The two scenarios
1 If the situation is resolved relatively quickly and the global impact is contained, the result could be limited to a weaker Chinese demand for gold and a transitory impact on the price.

2 If, however, the epidemic spreads further and continues to influence investor sentiment, global flight flows towards quality, amid concerns of a global slowdown, could have a more sustained (positive) impact on the gold price.

The jewels that shone at the Oscars 2020

The Oscar 2020 prizes were also (virtually) awarded to the jewels seen on the red carpet. In fact, clothes and jewels have always been part of the show of the most glamorous evening. And even the actresses who did not win the magical statuette (by the way: do you know why it is called Oscar? We explain it to you a few lines below) had the satisfaction of parading with memorable jewels.

Let’s start with those signed Tiffany. Charlize Theron showed up on the red carpet in a splendid Tiffany High Jewelry Collection Autumn 2020 necklace: diamonds of D color (the best), internally flawless, for over 21 carats. The necklace sported by Theron has a value of over 5 million dollars and is composed of 165 diamonds. Always by Tiffany rings and earrings.

Amazing necklace, also Tiffany’s, for Gal Gadot, with over 76 total carats of diamonds for 11 carats and valued for over 2 million dollars. Always from Harry Winston the jewels of Idina Menzel, candidate for the award for the original song: necklace with cascade diamonds of 60.30 carats, mounted in platinum, earrings with Pirouette diamonds, 4.44 carats, mounted in platinum, and ring with Winston Cluster diamonds, 3.92 carats, set in platinum. Why it’s named Oscar
By the way: why are the golden statuettes symbolizing the award given by the Academy Award of Merit called Oscar? According to the most accepted theory, the name is a trivial coincidence: it derives from the exclamation of an employee of the Academy, Margaret Herrick, who at the sight of the first statuette exclaimed: “It looks just like my uncle Oscar!”. A name that nobody has taken from it anymore.

In reality, what in the West is considered to be Chinese New Year is the spring festival or lunar new year and is also celebrated in Korea, Mongolia, Singapore, Malaysia, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, Taiwan and Japan. In the East, in fact, a lunisolar calendar is used for this type of festivities: the months begin in conjunction with each new moon. As mentioned, for this reason the starting date of the first month, and of the new year, can vary by about 29 days, between 21 January and 19 February of the western calendar. But that won’t stop you from wearing mouse-inspired jewelry, and especially Mickey Mouse.

It is worth knowing. She was born in Klagenfurt, Austria, in 1944, but at the age of three she moved with her family to the United States. She studied art in Perugia, Italy, and in Hanau, Germany. She then married a former Tiffany gemologist, Bruce Cummings, in 1970. Her career as a designer coincided with the work of Tiffany & Co., from 1967. She designed the first complete jewelery collection under her own name in 1975. She became one of the innovative jewelry designers (together with Paloma Picasso, Jean Schlumberger and Elsa Peretti) associated with Tiffany. Then, in 1984, he set up his own brand, whit her name, in Bergdorf Goodman. A geometric necklace with emeralds and diamonds designed by Angela has been sold for 1.5 million dollars.

Angela Cummings was also famous for the type of processing with 18 carat gold, platinum and silver, with precious stones: often mixed these materials with unconventional combinations such as wood. He also experimented with classical techniques of creating jewels, such as the inlay of precious metals and iron, with a process known as “damascene”. Ginkgo leaves, spiderwebs, vines, shells, feathers, sea foam, dragonflies and orchids have been sources of inspiration. Giulia Netrese

Roberto Coin launches a jewelry collection inspired by the sequel to the film Frozen

///

Winter is frozen for Roberto Coin. The Italian brand has decided to get on the sequel to the animated film Frozen with a special collection. Presented in the USA, the collection is called Disney x Roberto Coin Frozen 2 and includes pendants, earrings, rings and bracelets obviously inspired by the main characters of the film and, more generally, the theme of snow and ice. In short, most of the pieces can be worn even without a connection to the film being immediate. Even though it is linked to the launch of the film’s sequel to the film, therefore, it is not a collection of simple bijoux, as in similar combinations between jewelery and film marketing.

But there is also a pendant that represents the snowman Olaf, one of the characters in the Disney movie.

Who is Sat Hari, the designer who made Brad Pitt fall in love

The fascination of Indian philosophy and alternative medicine in Amrit’s jewels, by Sat Hari. Here’s who is the woman who fascinated Brad Pitt ♦ ︎

She went for India and never she is returned. Or, better, she came back but stay connected to the charm of the great Asian country, where for years she has studied the symbolism of precious stones. The blonde American designer Sat Hari Khalsa, 50, after a long period of youth training in India, which began when she was 18, returned to the States and founded Amrit, a name that in ancient Sanskrit indicates the water of eternal life, the nectar of the divine. Not before, however, having traveled the world together with a rock band as a holistic healer.

But the last adventure is the one destined to be more in the spotlight: the relationship with Brad Pitt. According to the Daily Mail weekly, the actor and designer would have met in 2018, during an event organized by Anthony Keidis, frontman of the Red Hot Chili Pepper, to whom Sat Hari Khalsa would have been a spiritual guide. In short, it is not surprising that Amrit aims to offer jewels linked to a mystical philosophy of life. In India, Sat Hari (which is the Indian name he adopted) fell in love with gems, jewels and ancient symbols and now creates his own collections with these references. Do not think, however, that they are Indian style jewelry. Amrit proposes jewels that, apart from some elephant figures that appear here and there, are absolutely of Western taste, with massive use of gold and precious stones, starting with diamonds. Report: the jewels of Gen Z

Cbjo Report: here are the jewels that young people under 25 want ♦ ︎

What jewels do young people want? IIt’s a big question for jewelers, merchants and, perhaps, even the young people themselves. To solve this puzzle the Cibjo, the world confederation of jewelery, has published a report on the buying habits and behavior of Gen Z. Young people aged between 15 and 25 are considered members of the Gen Z, born then down in the digital age and often users of social media like Instagram, WeChat or WhatsApp. There are also sociologists who hypothesize for Gen Z has a feeling of instability and insecurity, caused by the climate of economic crisis that would have conditioned their growth. There are, in short, many unknowns. So what are the jewels that young people like?

Orecchini e anello indossati
Orecchini e anello indossati

The president of Cibjo, Jonathan Kendall, thinks that Gen Z can be understood through the choices they make on social media: “They continually compare products, experiences and opinions. On a daily basis, only Instagram users publish over 95 million posts and its users click on over 4.2 billion likes. Just imagine the scope of this opportunity if your new product meets its aspirations and desires “.

Giovane della Gen Z

Other characteristics detected by the confederation report: Gen Z loves traveling, spontaneity, the search for authenticity and unique things. Kendall also adds that Gen Z “wants to change the world” and has sustainability at heart.

The solution to bring young people closer would therefore be to emphasize the ability to use recycled gold, propose reworked old jewels, or made with second-hand elements (stones, metal). All this should be emphasized by marketing messages.

Gender-neutral product offerings are also suggested as particularly interesting for Gen Z. Even jewelers need to adapt: according to the report, young buyers “want good old-fashioned customer service and immediate and clear answers to their questions”. As a result, staff training is essential. Furthermore, the design of the store is important: those that are well organized and easy to navigate online are the most popular, given that Gen Z fails to focus attention for long. Another consequence of the compulsive use of social media is that the very young read little. At most, they watch photos and videos. No one under 25 will probably read this article.

To emerge, a jewelry store should appear friendly, sociable and authentic, rather than aspirational. Online communication is very important: over 80% of Gen Z read reviews on the web before buying, in particular young women. It is incredible, therefore, that many jewelery and jewelery websites are still, at the end of 2019, of poor quality.

Art and jewelery are placed side by side in Elisabetta Cipriani’s gallery in London ♦ ︎

The world of art and jewels are linked. Not only because pieces of fine jewelry are small masterpieces of creativity, but also because conceptually the protagonists of the two worlds sometimes overlap. One example is the ork of Elisabetta Cipriani, who in London in 2009, opened a gallery in which she exhibited jewels created by over 40 painters and sculptors. All names are prominent, such as Ai Weiwei, Chiharu Shiota, Giulio Paolini, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Enrico Castellani, Erwin Wurm, Giorgio Vigna, Jannis Kounellis, Rebecca Horn and Pedro Cabrita Reis.

In the district of Valenza, Piedmont, Italy, there are dozens of companies dedicated to high quality jewelry. They are not all the same, though. And not all of them manage to obtain a space of international fame. Moreover, most of these companies specialize in work for third parties. They produce, that is, very refined jewels to which other Maison attach their brand. In short, they are hidden jewels. One of these is Lenti Villasco, which is punctually present at all VicenzaOro events and more. Lenti Villasco exports abroad 90% of the jewelery it produces and this is also a testimony of recognized quality.
