The legacy of Adina Reyter

All thanks to great-grandmother: the Adina Reyter brand in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, has conquered a place among the favorite jewelers of women, and not just Hollywood stars, even its first client is called Demi Moore. Founded in 2001, the Maison Adina Reyter was born after the designer worked in the world of advertising and fashion. But it is the teaching of the family clothing company that has been the fuel for her business.

As the founder of the jewelry brand tells, the story of the family begins with the great-grandmother, who immigrated to the United States without knowing the English language, but despite this, she was able to create a clothing company, then carried on by her sons. The story of those immigrants was part of Adina’s childhood, who as a young girl worked in the family business as a designer, in charge of sales, packaging and shipping. The AR brand is based on the idea of offering jewels at reasonable prices, so that women can shop for themselves and use every day, always for years to come. But quality jewelry that can be worn in any situation.

The transversal jewels of Yi Collection

/

Style editor in the USA, jewelry designer in China with her Maison, Yi Collection. Yi Guo’s transformation runs on the thread that unites New York and Shanghai. After about ten years in the American city, which the designer considers her home, she returned to the great Chinese metropolis, where she was born, and where she worked for Vogue China. Some trips to Sri Lanka and Myanmar, world capitals of sapphires and rubies, influenced the decision to devote herself to jewelry, after three years of working for the fashion world, with the desire to deal with his creations, rather than show them in photos of the others. The first rings were created by a craftsman in Yangon, Myanmar.

Precious and semi-precious stones are the basis of Yi’s work, who sells her jewels all over the world through various online marketplaces. Tanzanites, tourmalines, aquamarines, rubies, rubellites are used with simple geometries together with gold and some touches of enamel. The result is pleasant jewels, original but not bizarre, they are transversal to ethnic origin and can please any woman on the globe, whether she lives in New York or Shanghai.

Boom for online jewelry shopping

The news concerns the jewelry market in the United States, but it seems clear that it is the sign of a global trend, albeit probably with different proportions in the different countries of the globe. During the Christmas period, online sales of jewelry were record-breaking, according to Mastercard. The company that manages one of the most popular credit card payment circuits has made it known that in the US, in general, excluding cars from the count, on average sales during the period preceding the holidays (11 October to 24 December) increased by 3%. But online shopping has grown much more: by 49% compared to 2019.

In total, sales through e-commerce platforms accounted for 19.7% of overall retail sales, up from 13.4% in 2019. Admittedly, covid restrictions have helped drive online sales. , but the data remains. Overall sales (online and in-store) of jewelry fell by 4.3% compared to the previous year, but almost half (44.6%) were concluded online. During this period, in short, almost one in two Americans bought jewelry from their smartphone or computer. Not to mention that luxury goods, excluding jewelery, fell overall by 21.1% and, therefore, the performance of the jewelery sector is even more evident.

Roxanne’s no-limits freedom

//

Can Australia inspire a jewelry designer? This is what happened to Roxanne Rajcoomar-Hadden, who moved from London to Melbourne with her husband. The cases of life. In Australia, she says, she has found an ideal feeling for independent brands, both for clothing and for jewelry. Roxanne was therefore able to put to good use her studies at London College of Fashion, at the Rough Diamond course at De Beers, and the Diamond Grading at the GIA. Her jewelry brand, on the other hand, launched it in 2013. Until she discovered the freedom to be free in the great country of the southern hemisphere.

Roxanne Rajcoomar-Hadden, more, is one of those women who have jewelry in their blood, with a passion that has followed them since childhood. Furthermore, her grandfather was a goldsmith in Guyana. But creative freedom comes with rigorous standards, such as using fair trade gold and ethically sourced gems. Her jewels are noticeable, both those made only in gold, perhaps in the shape of a shrimp or a crab, and whether she chooses precious stones. In addition, the designer praises the principle of comfort: jewelry must be able to be worn all day.

The yellows of 2021

/

What will the yellow jewels of 2021 be like? It is questionable since Pantone, like every year, has chosen a guide color for the 12 months of the calendar. By the way, if you want to know how the color of the year is chosen, read here.

Anello in oro bianco con cupola in smalto giallo che si apre by Solange Azagury-Patridge
Anello in oro bianco con cupola in smalto giallo che si apre by Solange Azagury-Patridge

For 2021, in truth, Pantone has chosen two colors: a particular shade of yellow, but also a neutral gray. Gray stones are not uncommon, as are jewelery metals with this shade, for example a darkened gold or titanium. But it is easier for the choice of a jeweler to fall on the yellow color, more warm and lively. To begin with, yellow is also the color of gold, although it often takes on other shades, such as pink and white when alloyed with other metals such as copper, or silver and palladium. There are also many precious and semi-precious yellow stones, such as sapphires, topaz, citrine. Of course, only a particularly light and vibrant shade of yellow accords with Pantone’s choice.
Bea Bongiasca, anello Baby Vine Tendril
Bea Bongiasca, anello Baby Vine Tendril

In keeping with the choice of the American company, the color yellow has already been chosen by some designers, such as the Milanese Bea Bongiasca, who has always used enamel for her jewelry. The ring is made of 9-karat gold and silver with a marquise-cut topaz and enamel with a bright yellow. Or like certain glazes used by Solange Azagury-Patridge. In short, there is no shortage of yellow jewels, but beware: yellows tuned to 2021 are rarer.

Irene Neuwirth bohemian chic

//

The bohemian chic jewels of the Californian designer Irene Neuwirth, the favorite of Gwyneth Paltrow and … ♦ ︎

She has a dream house on a canal in Venice, a small town near Los Angeles, ended up in the pages of glossy magazines like Vogue and Elle. And in her boutique in the big city of California she put a pink sofa, a beautiful kitchen-stove Lacanche, portraits of dogs. In short, nothing suggests that the Irene Neuwirth flagship store is a favorite of many Hollywood stars, such as Naomi Watts, Tracee Ellis Ross, Julianne Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Paulson, Busy Philipps and Ruth Negga. Instead, Irene Neuwirth, next to the air, a bit like a Coachella fan, is a very appreciated jewelery designer, present all over the world.

Irene Neuwirth prefers colors, indeed, the mix of bright colors. Stones like tourmaline or chalcedony are combined with gold, emeralds or rubies.

Her jewels, which she started to create in 2003, by inserting simple glass beads, represent the opposite of those of the great Maison, which focus entirely on refined work and classic jewels. The Californian designer, instead, offers bright jewels, which can be worn with a sporty dress, jeans or an elegant dress to go to dinner. But it is always high-end jewelry: the necklace you see on this page, for example, costs 160,000 euros. Lavinia Andorno

Solange Azagury-Partridge’s Kinetic collection is still moving

It’s been over 20 years since one of the most eclectic jewelery designers, Solange Azagury-Partridge presented her Kinetic collection. Yet the line of those playful jewels remains one of the most appreciated and requested. Obviously it has been renewed over time, but its fundamental aspect remains: jewels that move and allow you to play with them. It is not the only collection of kinetic jewels, of course, but it is undoubtedly one of the most original and the proof is that it is still offered by the British Maison.

But, although the initial idea may suggest that it is a collection not to be taken too seriously, in reality the jewels are made of the highest quality. It even includes, for exemple, a ring with diamonds with the unusual star-cut surrounding a central rose-cut diamond in 18-karat blackened white gold. Or the most famous piece: a ruby ring that marks the days of the week. In short, first-class jewelry, with the addition of the designer’s usual imagination.

Daverio 1933’s artistic legacy

It is said that the jewel is a small work of art. But that’s often not true. Not all jewels are made with formal research, as well as with the aim of easy sale. There are, however, exceptions. One of these concerns Daverio 1933, a small Maison in Bergamo (Italy). The exception concerns, in particular, the roots of the company, which takes its name from Franco Daverio, an illustrator and sculptor with artistic qualities also praised by a famous Italian painter, Fausto Melotti. Daverio developed his work in a period of the twentieth century that was particularly full of developments for the world of art. The jewelery production started by Luca Daverio, the son, is inspired by that experience.

Daverio 1933’s jewels are affected by that legacy linked to the Italian artistic avant-garde of the mid-last century and, above all, by his father’s work but, of course, they also have a wearability that makes them tuned to the present day. Daverio 1933’s atelier produces handcrafted jewelry and, in particular, unique pieces for lovers of artistic jewelry. The jewels are the result of the creativity of Luca Daverio, who personally designs every single piece and creates it in collaboration with expert craftsmen from Milan and Valenza.

The bijoux of the Brilliance collection are materially made under license by Fossil. The collection, in fact, is made of metal with PVD in the three colors of gold, with the addition of brilliant-cut cubic zirconia crystals. Gamma Creations, high jewelery in Thai sauce

It is known to those who work in the world of jewelry that a large part of the jewelry sold in the world is produced in Thailand. And not only mass-produced jewels such as those of big brands, for example Danish ones (just to give an example). Even large Maison entrust part of the production to the skilled hands of Thai artisans, perhaps reserving the right to put the final finishing touches at home. One of these realities, which are active behind the scenes, is Gamma Creations.

The company designs and produces exclusive jewelry and works for third parties. Also facilitated by the fact that the founder is a Frenchman, Jacques Prades, who gave birth to the company in 1984, and now the factory actively works with French and Italian companies. Jacques Prades understands it: he learned everything about the jewelry trade thanks to his father, a master craftsman, much appreciated by the crowned heads of his time.

Prades combines a sensitivity for jewelry with the skill of business: he was graduated with honors from the Ecole Du Louvre, while at the same time worked as an apprentice at Templier-Fontana, one of the leading world laboratories of the time. He then embarked on a journey around the world that lasted ten years, starting with a jewelry workshop in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. In short, he is an adventurous. Gamma Creations thus manages to combine traditional Thai craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to create valuable pieces for the Western market. As these images testify.

The freedom jewels of Karma El Khalil

She studied psychology. And for this she became a gemologist and jewelry designer in New York. It seems strange? It is. But it is the story of Karma El Khalil, who received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Tufts University in Boston. Then, she wanted to do a master’s degree in London, but a random mistake on the part of the school’s admissions department delayed entry. So Karma spent the summer designing jewelry for fun. As can be easily deduced from the name, Karma El Khalil is of Arab origin. Lebanese, to be precise. And the makeshift designer showed the jewelry design to a family friend in Beirut, which is one of the centers of Middle Eastern jewelry.

Orecchini Puzzle di iolite
Orecchini Puzzle di iolite

Result: they liked them. The designer’s parents invested $ 10,000 to make 15 pieces, which were immediately sold. And Karma El Khalil’s professional history began. She moved to New York to study design and graduated from the GIA, immediately sold 80% of the jewelry at the first opportunity and found admirers in Madonna and Brad Pitt, who gave Angelina Jolie a Karma ring (they were others times), Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera. The mix of cultures that she brings with her, between Europe, America and Africa (where she lived as a child with her parents), stimulated and conditioned her creativity. And, perhaps, the degree in psychology helps her understand the desire of others.

In Old England with Charles Green

The British style of Charles Green, founded in 1824 in Birmingham ♦ ︎
Let’s say the truth: the dear, old England continues to have its charm, whether you agree with Brexit or not. Stories like Charles Green, manufacturing jewellers in Birmingham, appear to have come out of a book by Ken Follett. The foundation of the jewelery company, tells the story of the company, dates back to the year that Beethoven wrote his Ninth Symphony, George IV was King of England, Charles X of France and in the United States was President James Monroe.

Anello Pegno d'amore in oro giallo 18 carati
Anello Pegno d’amore in oro giallo 18 carati

In 1824, therefore, Charles Green founded the jewelery company that still has its name today. And, perhaps even more remarkable, the company has been in the hands of the Green family from six generations. Also today, in fact, the president is a descendant of the founder, Tom Green. With this premise one can expect a style with fireplace and tea at five in the afternoon. But it is only partially true. Charles Green loves traditions, like most of His Majesty’s citizens. But it does not disdain the new technologies, like CAD design (modeling software), with which to design rings like that with a curious medieval castle form. Charles Green works mostly on order, on behalf of third parties, but does not deny making jewelery pieces with his signature. With understatement, in perfect British style. Rudy Serra

The jewelry with a pinch of surrealism by Allison Read Smith ♦ ︎
A cone used for road works, a chair, a ladder. And again, a crown, an axe … It can not be said that at Allison Read Smith, a designer born and raised in Memphis ((Tennessee, Usa), lacks fantasy. Or irony. His motto is: “Ars longa, short life”, Latin words meaning “life is short, art lasts for a long time”, a phrase attributed to Seneca. Allison, who has also participated in contemporary art exhibitions with his paintings and pop-rock sculptures, has married with a somewhat surreal philosophy into jewelery.

The jewels repurposed by Tiffany include pieces from collections such as Mesh, Silk, Cabochon, as well as Bone. These are collections that run through the history of the collaboration between Elsa Peretti and Tiffany. The Mesh collection, for example, was inspired by a trip to Jaipur, India, in 1974: a design that made 18K gold and diamond jewelry more wearable.

Personally curated by Peretti herself, some of these models hadn’t been on sale for almost 20 years. The jewels will be available only for selected jewelers in different countries.

In short, the American designer has plans to develop more and more what stands beside the classic production of clothes. It is no coincidence that the brand has long begun to offer its jewels, like the ones you see on this page. It is not yet clear, however, if Ralph Lauren will try his hand at a more demanding jewelry, as other fashion brands have already done, often with excellent results. For now, most of its flagship jewels are in silver, but also in rose gold and diamonds.

In summary, we can already anticipate the result of the analysis: the trends of the coming years are cultural blending, spirituality and gender fluid. The jewel of the post-Covid restart will be inspired by the craftsmanship of the traditional techniques of India, Europe and South America revisited by young emerging designers. Jewelry will also have the ambition to instill a new spirituality in the wearer, an experience of transcendence that manifests itself through talismans and amulets, an expression of a holistic approach to life. In short, farewell technology, we look to the Middle Ages. At the same time, the jewels will be unisex: they will overcome the gender divisions, proposing themselves to the single individual and aligning themselves with his understanding of life, rejecting any forced and oppressive characterization. Women who will wear the heavy chains chosen by men so far? Or males who will delight in delicate rose gold jewelry? In a scenario necessarily impacted by the global pandemic, Trendvision reveals, the revolutions triggered by #MeToo and the movement for awareness on climate change are pushing towards ethics and sustainability, values shared by Millennials and Gen Z.

The next trend is also the use of innovative techniques, games of contrasts between enamels, colored natural stones, glass and ceramics. A reality that is continuous contamination, fusion, synergy and dialogue, in which there is the awareness that the recovery will have to enhance all parts of the whole, through a virtuous and respectful fusion.
