Butani from Meghan to Ariana

//

The new jewels by Butani, with many diamonds that also like to Meghan Markle and Ariana Grande ♦ ︎

Last winter the name of Butani has become famous also to women who do not have many opportunities to admire high jewelry pieces. A pair of Butani earrings, in fact, was worn by the Duchess of Sussex at the gala dinner organized by President Jioji Konrote in the Fiji Islands. To be precise, chandelier earrings with white and yellow diamonds, valued at $ 500,000. In fact, those earrings were also one of the many exception to the rules by Meghan Markle: the earrings, in fact, were borrowed from Meghan, just as the movie stars do on the red carpet. But according to the etiquette for the official events the British royals usually wear only family jewels. Problems, in any case, that do not seem so fundamental.

The fact remains that Prince Harry’s wife turned the spotlight on one of the most sparkling Maison of the East. Founded by the Indian family of Butani, the brand is based in Hong Kong. It’s focused on jewels of great value, rich in stones, especially diamonds. Like the necklace worn at the Grammy Awards 2019 by Ariana Grande: it was composed of over a thousand diamonds, for an estimated value of $ 380,000. Lavinia Andorno

A egg of 13.8 million

/

An oval diamond of over 88 carats sold by Sotheby’s for 13.8 million dollars in Hong Kong ♦ ︎

Big diamonds are forever, at least in auctions. The spectacular new confirmation comes from Hong Kong, where a spectacular oval brilliant diamond of 88.22 carats, D Color, Flawless, Type IIa, perfect according to every critical criterion, was sold at the Magnificent Jewels auction for 13,8 millions dollars, or 12.3 million euros. The diamond was one of only three oval diamonds of over 50 carats auctioned, and the largest for over five years. It was bought by a private Japanese collector, who admired it when the stone was on display in Japan, in the usual road show that precedes sales of this type.

After paying a similar sum, the collector took the satisfaction of baptizing the diamond, now called Manami Star. Manami is the name of the eldest daughter.

The diamond was contested by three bidders and started with a valuation between 11.2 and 12.7 million dollars, which it exceeded. The price per carat is $ 156,150.

We were thrilled to handle a diamond of such rarity, which now takes its place in the roster of top white diamonds to have come to the market here at Sotheby’s Asia. Three clients from the region competed for the stone – testament to the strong demand for diamonds of this quality in this part of the world. At 88.22 carats, this lucky stone now carries the name of the fortunate child whose father has chosen to give it her name. A happy moment in the journey of one of the earth’s greatest, oldest treasures.
Patti Wong, president of Sotheby’s in Asia

Perfect according to each critical criterion, the diamond has reached the highest rankings based on each of the standards with which the quality of a stone (the four Cs) is judged. The diamond is the color D (the highest grade for a white diamond); of exceptional clarity (it is completely flawless, both internally and externally), and has an excellent gloss and symmetry. As with the Koh-i-noor diamond (also oval) and the Cullinan I, which are part of the British Crown Jewels, the stone belongs to the rare sub-group which includes less than 2% of all gemmed diamonds, known as Type IIa . The diamonds of this group are the most chemically pure type of diamond and often have an exceptional optical transparency.

Finding a rough diamond that allows those who cut it to shape a stone over 80 carats is very rare. The 242-carat rough stone that produced the diamond was discovered in Botswana in the Jwaneng mine, a mine owned by De Beers and the Botswana government, known for the production of high quality raw materials. After its discovery, the rough diamond was cut and polished for months. Given the elongated shape of the rough stone, the oval shape was chosen to preserve the greatest amount of weight. A great skill and precision was needed to cut a stone of this importance: a level of experience and mastery possessed by only a small handful of cutters from all over the world.

In the same auction, a ring with sapphire and diamonds was sold for 2.4 million dollars, another ring with pear-cut diamond and pink diamonds was sold for 1.7 million, while a necklace of diamonds and emeralds by Van Cleef & Arpels found a buyer for $ 1.1 million. Also noteworthy is a pair of diamond and sapphire earrings, also worth over a million US dollars, as well as an emerald and diamond ring. Federico Graglia

Kristen Malan, her Africa

/

From South Africa the unique pieces of Kristen Malan, among design, tribal and refurbish of vintage jewelry.

African ethnic jewelry, as well as tribal sculpture, have fascinated many artists. So it is not strange to see a designer who lives and works in South Africa, using some of the features of craftworks, as the goal of catching lucky, that tie the jewel in an anti evil eye function.

Orecchini di ametista e rubellite

But do not think to bijoux whichever. The Kristen Malan jewels are unique pieces that have won more than one award for design (for example, an International Design Excellence Award in Hong Kong). She, not surprisingly, she feels more to a painter than a designer. The results are often spectacular jewelry: big, dramatic, precious. Perhaps because she also worked as an art director in the advertising industry: an experience that taught her how to communicate emotions with their creativity. Not only: another passion of Kristen Malan is the hunt for quality jewelry of the past. Victorian brooches, even a Faberge eggs: the jewels are transformed with modifications and completions. And the results are often surprising. Margherita Andorno

12 million for one oval

/

A large 88-carat oval diamond will be auctioned at Sotheby’s ♦ ︎

Lovers of large gemstones have a date to mark on the calendar: 2 April. On that day, in Hong Kong, Sotheby’s will put an oval diamond defined as “perfect according to each criterion”. It is, in fact, a stone not common: it is an oval diamond of type IIa of 88.22 carats, color D. The diamond was made from a raw stone of 242 carats mined in the De Beers mine, in Jwaneng, in Botswana. The stone is valued between 11.2 and 12.7 million dollars.

A curious aspect is that the sale in Hong Kong also has a superstitious reason.

Il diamante ovale da 88 carati messo all'asta
Il diamante ovale da 88 carati messo all’asta

The stone weighs 88 carats and the number eight in Asia is considered lucky: it is also a symbol of perfection and eternity. A double 8 is therefore considered a super lucky charm. Last year, in April 2018, Sotheby sold a 102.34 carat white diamond, but without communicating the price. And two impeccable D-type diamonds of color D, weighing 51.71 carats and 50.39 carats, were sold in Geneva for $ 9.3 million and $ 8.1 million.

Full and empty by Marijoli

From Switzerland to Hong Kong: the history of the brand Marijoli by the designer Marielle Byworth.

From the peaks of Switzerland to the tops of the skyscrapers of Tokyo and Hong Kong. Marielle Byworth after studying at the Graphic Art School of Swiss Romande (Erag) and at University of Art and Design of Lausanne, she moved to Hong Kong. As a jewelry designer, however, Marielle she has been dedicated for years to create bespoke pieces, or for other Maison. Until 2005, when she moved to Tokyo and launched her first collection, Elema, and its brand Marijoli. She immediately makes goal: rounded shapes and use the volumes have appeared immediately original.

To want to be disrespectful, yellow gold surfaces pierced with circles of different sizes suggest the typical Swiss cheese, Emmenthal: who knows that is not an unconscious reminder of the roots of the designer. In any case, this unusual skill in playing with tradition and innovation has added the mixed use of precious and semi precious materials like volcanic lava, combined with black onyx in Purple collection. Or diamonds combined with black vinyl, rubies coupled with wood. Returned to Hong Kong, she has not lost the ability to innovate, and has been appreciated by some celebrities who wore her jewelry on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival. Lavinia Andorno

Entice from India to the world

India in international format, from Jaipur to Hong Kong, via America by is brand of Entice (Kgk Group) ♦︎

What does an Indian in Hong Kong? Simple, if it is part of the KGK Group is dedicated to Entice Jewellery. The brand is well known particularly in Asia and America: born in 2009 in Jaipur, Entice chose to modernize the style of the Rajasthani jewelery with a topical twist. They are very important jewels: the value is given by the long and meticulous workmanship and materials used. KGK is among the few manufacturers of jewelry that buys rough diamonds directly from giants such as De Beers, Alrosa and Rio Tinto. And it can do because the Indian company is just as great.

Over the years the company has grown and is now a multinational company that, among other things, also has several brands of jewelry, including Entice. To give you an idea: employs 12,000 employees. The company is still led by a member of the family who founded it, Navrattan Kothari: it is his idea of launching Entice, which now has five independent shops in countries such as Hong Kong and India (Bangalore, Jaipur, Mumbai and New Delhi). Damiani inaugurates a boutique in Hong Kong

New boutique of the Damiani group in Chinese territory: this time it is inside a mall in Hong Kong ♦ ︎

A link between more traditional China and the West: Hong Kong, now part of the People’s Republic of China after having been for a century and a half a British colony, is also a financial center close to the technological center of the almost contiguous Shenzhen. In this context Damiani has opened a new boutique, inside the luxurious Mall Elements. Cutting of the ribbon with the presence of Giorgio Damiani, vice president of the Damiani Group, of the world soccer champion Fabio Cannavaro (now coach in China), of the actress Charmaine Sheh and of Debbie Chan, representative of the Mall Elements.

The boutique opened in Hong Kong is over 100 square meters and is added to the dozen stores in China.

In Hong Kong, a 5-carat blue diamond is sold: it is the king in Sotheby’s auction. But there is also Wallace Chan ♦ ︎

The season of big auctions is come back and amazing stones, fabulous jewels and collector’s items are to buy. The October 3 appointment in Hong Kong on 3 October with the Magnificent Jewels auction at Sotheby’s, for example, includes several interesting pieces in the catalog. The king, according to estimates, could be a 5-carat blue fancy diamond ring.

The diamond, as in the best traditions, also has a name: Ai, the word that Chinese means love.

The estimate of the ring is 12.5-15.3 million dollars. But of course when it comes to auctions in Hong Kong jade comes into play. At auction there is, for example, a necklace consisting of 51 emerald green jadeite pearls, with a translucency considered “very good”. The necklace is closed with a chaumet diamond clasp. Two lavender jade bracelets, on the other hand, are so precious that they will be sold separately. The maximum sales estimate is close to $ 900,000 each.

Another collector’s piece is signed by Wallace Chan, an artist-designer who lives and works in Hong Kong.

The design of the jewel is inspired by the fruits of melon.

Wendy Yue’s flowers

//

Wendy Yue’s flower-shaped jewels have enchanted Moda Operandi ♦ ︎

Those who have never been to Hong Kong, but know Wendy Yue’s artisan jewelry, can imagine that the Asian city is a species of Earthly Paradise. Flowers and leaves grow lush, the colors shine in the clear air. Hong Kong, instead, has another kind of charm, but not the one related to flora. The designer, however, manages to imagine a private garden, with plants not exactly similar to those found in nature and, perhaps for this reason, even more fascinating.
Imaginative cocktail rings, bracelets and earrings are made of precious and colored stones that form a non-replicable world. This is also why his unique pieces of jewelry are prey to collectors who do not let them escape. As evidenced by the recent trunk show on Moda Operandi, which saw Wendy Yue’s jewelry go sold out. But of course, like all the flowers, the jewels of the Chinese designer will also grow back. Cosimo Muzzano

Butani in the empyrean

Butani in the sky of jewelry with Empyrean, between diamonds and precious stones ♦ ︎
At Baselworld 2018 Butani presented the Empyrean high jewelery collection. This is a novelty compared to the tradition of the Hong Kong Maison. According to Butani, the collection is a shock to who the idea that high jewelry is to be worn ever in combinations. In short, Empyrean is aimed at a younger audience, or at least with a less traditional taste.
But this is certainly not unimaginative jewelry. On the contrary, it is a collection of great impact, which draws greater strength from the novelties presented by Butani: in addition to the usual round diamonds with brilliant cut, this time Butani chose to make necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings with diamonds in the shape of pear, fancy and precious stones, including ruby, emerald and sapphire. The result is a collection that has great visibility. Includes pendant earrings and earcuff, bracelets with diamonds designed to be individually or together, according to the needs, necklaces in the shape of thin diamond choker or with pendants of precious stones. Sotheby’s, a ruby is the winner

In Hong Kong the Sotheby’s auction in the sign of rubies and diamonds, the jade flop ♦ ︎
There are no longer the seasons of the past and not even the collectors of the past. Sotheby’s top lot at the Hong Kong auction, the perfect Circle of Heaven jade bracelet, did not find a buyer at the Magnificent Jewels auction, which totaled $ 48.6 million. The bracelet was valued at between 10.2 and 12.8 million dollars, but did not reach the minimum required. And to say that, according to Chinese tradition, jade is the “stone of paradise” which, together with the circular shape, provided the bracelet with a patent of perfection. The initial estimate is too high, obviously.
But it was not the only auction flop. A diamond of brilliant color, impeccable, of 17,63 carats, estimated at 2,8 million, was unsold, as a Cartier ring with a 14.72 carat brilliant cut Colombian emerald and brilliant cut diamonds (estimate up to 1.4 million) and even a ring with a 14.18 carat fancy blue diamond surrounded by rose diamonds, estimated at between 5.9 and 7.6 million dollars.
But of course, there were also jewels sold well. The most quoted was found to be a ring with a Burmese cut-cushion ruby weighing 24.70 carats, set in a pear-shaped diamond outline. And with a stem covered with a pavé of brilliant cut pink diamonds. It was sold for 11 million, as expected. In second place for value, there are a pair of pear cut diamond earrings sold for 3 million dollars, while a ring with fancy yellow 30.16 carat diamond has totaled 2.8 million and a pink-violet diamond-cut cushion of 5 carats was awarded for 2.5 million. Finally, a ring with a vivid yellow-orange diamond with an emerald cut of 10.30 carats, set between two tapered baguette diamonds, found a buyer for 1.4 million. Federico Graglia

This Coca Cola has 9888 diamonds

/

A bottle shaped Coca Cola bag studded with 9888 diamonds: it is Coronet’s record-breaking idea ♦ ︎
Can you have fun with the jewels? Yes, in many ways. There are those who enjoy shopping and those who play with diamonds and gold as elements of a puzzle. That’s what makes Coronet, a Hong Kong jewelry brand specializing in diamonds. Every so often Coronet surprises with its initiatives: after realizing, in 2015, an electric guitar, a real instrument, completely covered with with 400 carats of diamonds white and black, at Baselworld 2018 the brand has established another record Guinness. This time the world record regards the highest number of diamonds set on a bottle-shaped Coca Cola handbag. It is worth looking at what is a jewel that is unlikely to be used in real life. The bottle-shaped bag of the most popular drink has 9,888 diamonds for 120 carats.
Coronet presented his stock exchange at Baselworld, stating that the production required about a hundred days of work by 15 artisans. Diamonds are placed on a surface of Icestrella, a material used in the creation of bulletproof glass, which replicates the appearance and the atmosphere of the famous glass bottle. The design, on the other hand, is by American Kathrine Baumann (who is a former Miss America), while the realization is by Aaron Shum Jewelry, the company that owns the Coronet brand.
So, if you complain about the price of the handbags of famous brands, think that there is one that undoubtedly costs more.

This is the Circle of Heaven

/

A rare jade bracelet, great classic jewelry and Ashley Judd’s earrings at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong ♦ ︎
The great auctions come back with great jewels for big wallets. Everything is great at Sotheby’s auction on April 3rd in Hong Kong. For enthusiasts collectors of the Orient, the “highly translucent” jadeite bracelet will certainly be exciting, considered the most precious piece of the Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite auction. Sotheby’s has the aim of selling pieces for $ 93.6 million.
The assessment of the simple circle ranges from 10.2 to 12.8 million dollars. The most expensive round in history, perhaps. The bracelet also has a name: The Circle of Heaven. It has a full color, emerald green with “fine texture”. The name, apart from the perfection of the geometric form, derives from the fact that in China the tradition considers jadeite as the Stone of Heaven.
But there is not only the much appreciated jade auction, which also includes classic vintage jewelry, including a series of pieces in Art Deco style. A few samples: a Burmese ruby ring with a 24.70 carat cushion cut is valued at 11.8 million dollars. A 14.1 carat blue diamond surrounded by brilliant cut diamonds set in platinum and 18k rose gold is valued at up to 7.7 million.

Gemco and his brothers

The great race of the Gemco Designs, with the triumph of the stones between East and West. Here are the news presented at VicenzaOro with the Nigaam brand: The Stella Collection and Cascade Collection, with briolette cut diamonds ♦
From Jaipur, the capital of the Indian jewelry, up to Hong Kong and New York. No wonder the Gemco Designs jewelry is a nice hybrid of the two cultures, East and West. Founded in 1970 by brothers Gaurav, Pravesh and Prateek Nigam as an active company in the gemstone trade, Gemco has thus gained a solid reputation. In 2012 it took place the consecration, with the launch of the luxury brand Nigaam, neglecting the least profitable market for silver jewelry (but they are still in the catalog). They are, of course, jewelry that shine a large quantity of precious stones, often cut in the traditional Indian way, a bit ‘less precise and multifaceted than you see in Antwerp. But the effect is there. In high-end jewelry you can read the ancient Indian tradition, but also that of Byzantine icons, Islamic carpets and even of handicraft Chinese. Their jewelery are now in sixty stores in the East, especially in China, and the United States, but is coming also a platform for online sales. Cosimo Muzzano

Pink Promise sold for 31.9 million

The Pink Promise diamond touches Christie’s record at Hong Kong ♦ ︎
There is pink diamond and pink diamond. While the 37-carat Raj Pink was not sold in Geneva, the smallest The Pink Promise, a 14.93 carat pink fancy vivid, was beaten by Christie’s for $ 31.9 million at Magnificent Jewels auction Hong Kong. The price is very close to the world record for a single carat of a pink diamond: $ 2.13 million (the record is almost 2.15 million per carat that a buyer has paid for a 5-carat diamond vivid diamond at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong in December 2009).
The diamond has a curious history: it was bought by a stone merchant, Stephen Silver, in 2013 and cut again to highlight its color; it weighed 16.10 carats. The operation, very delicate, was successful. Silver (a name that marks a destiny) is already busy with particularly precious diamonds, such as The Cranberry, fancy red violet, The Million Dollar Pumpkin, a vivid orange, and a fancy blue vivid diamond. The Hong Kong auction, in addition to the highly regarded in Asia jade pieces, has also won jewelry from important Maison, such as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. Here are some pieces sold. Christie’s between pink diamond and Wallace Chan

Exceptional Christie’s Auction in Hong Kong: an expensive pink diamond, precious stones and incredible pieces by Wallace Chan ♦ ︎
It is a sign of our times that the most expensive jewelery piece ever offered by Christie’s auction will not be sold in New York, but in Hong Kong. On November 28, the auction house in the former British colony of China will beat over 290 lots. In particular, attention will be focused on The Pink Promise, a 14.93-carat pink diamond ring and, in addition, the highest quality ratings. In fact, this is a fancy vivid pink VVS1 clarity (type IIA). The estimate has a fairly wide range: from 28 to 42 million US dollars. Pink diamonds are considered among the most precious and rare stones. There are no two identical pink diamonds: each has a unique set of shades, hues and saturation that result from the absorption of light in the diamond structure. Even today, the exact structural defect causing pink is not yet fully understood by diamond researchers, and perhaps even for this reason they are stones that continue to enchant.
For lovers of precious stones, this will not be the only diamond in the auction. There are, in fact, stones like a 8.80-carat diamond Fancy Intense Pink VVS1 Clarity (Type IIA). Estimated: $ 8.8 to $ 12 million), a 8.17-carat Pearl-sized Burmese ruby ruby ring (5.8-8 million dollars), a jade necklace (about 14.7-15.9mm) and diamonds (7.3-10 million) and a jade pendant (3.5-4.8 million).
Chan masterpieces
In addition to the exceptional stones, Christie’s also offers a number of equally remarkable pieces of legendary jeweler Wallace Chan. The sale is called Wallace Chan: The Beginning of a Genius. It is a collection created by the famous jeweler and artist in the most innovative period, among the fifties and late nineties. According to Vickie Sek, vice president and director of Christie’s jewelery in Asia, “It is a privilege to offer a selection of the finest diamonds, jewelery and signature pieces to our collectors who expect only the best from Christie’s”. Hong Kong Tutti Frutti

Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong with Magnificent Jewels by Cartier, Jar and Van Cleef & Arpels ♦ ︎
The Magnificent Jewels return, this time with the addition of jadeite. The jade, in fact, can not miss a jewelry auction in Hong Kong and Sotheby’s takes into account the preferences of its customers in Asia. But, of course, the sale scheduled on October 3 does not only include jewelery made in jade. There are also pieces of exceptional interest, such as a rare Cartier Art Deco bracelet, of the Tutti Frutti series: it is valued at between 1.35 and 1.79 million dollars.
For collectors is a Jar-signed ring, an eclectic jewelry artist. This is a ruby ring of 8.49 carats: a big stone, although the jewel has no design that can be attributed immediately to the creativity of Joel Arthur Rosenthal. It may have more impact the parure by Cleef & Arpels, with diamonds and emeralds: rings, earrings, and necklace will be sell with an estimated $ 2 to $ 3 million, but it would not be surprising if this rating was overcome. Sarah Ho loves red

Sarah Ho comes back to China and presents a ruby collection with Kimberlite ♦ ︎
From China with love, and return. Sarah Ho was born in Hong Kong, grew up in Macau and moved to London, where he became one of the trendiest and most innovative designers. Now, however, she returned to China, in Beijing, to present 12 jewels made with Kimberlite Diamonds, the Harmony collection. In Baselworld it was been anticipating the project, now completed. The collection is inspired by the red color, which in the East is considered lucky.
The jewels are then made with the use of large, lively rubies, next to diamonds: the stones form the peony flower, another symbol in China. But not only: Kimberlite emphasizes how this collection is also in perfect accord with Taoism, the Chinese philosophy that bases the balance of the world through the concepts of yin and yang. In this case, represented by the relationship between the different stones and jewelery volumes, which have a sufficiently elaborate look for the oriental taste. Presented in the Forbidden City, the collection also has some price that may seem prohibitive, such as earrings of over £ 44,000. In perfect balance yin and yang, though. Alessia Mongrando

The Jonker 5 sold for 5.3 million

A legendary diamond, Jonker number 5, sold for 5.3 million from Christie’s ♦
The sale of Magnificent Jewels by Christie’s in Hong Kong totaled $ 79.4 million. Of this nursery, 5.3 million were spent for a diamond, the Jonker number 5, above its pre-sale estimate of 2.2 to 3.6 million. The diamond weighs 25.27 carats, has a rectangular cut, type IIa, color D, VVS2 clarity. The Jonker No. 5 is part of the legendary diamond collection cut from a rough 726 carat stone, discovered by Jacob Jonker in South Africa in 1934. That stone was, in that moment, the fourth largest diamond ever found. It also has a long history: that diamond had bought it from Sir Ernest Oppenheimer’s Diamond Corporation. Then, it was sold to Harry Winston in 1935 and was exhibited during the celebrations of the Coronation Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in London, and then at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
Harry Winston later cut the big diamond with help by Lazare Kaplan: the result is 13 pieces with a weight of 3.53 to 142.90 carats, although the largest was later reduced to 125.35 carats to increase his brilliance.
Another piece of value sold in Hong Kong is a necklace created by Edmond Chin for Boghossian. It consists of 11 perfect emeralds that shape the shape of a small palm, with a diamond outline. Sales price: $ 6 million. Federico Graglia
