The 10 most worn rings

Which ring to choose? Each shape of this jewel has its own meaning and its own name. Read what are the 10 kind of rings most worn and what they symbolize ♦

There are many types of rings: there are not only those for engagement or marriage. The shape of a ring also depends on which finger of the hand to wear it or on which occasion is more appropriate, because many types of rings also have a symbolic meaning. Not surprisingly, jewelers offer their rings with a precise definition, such as eternity, trilogy, solitaire, cocktail … Here are the 10 most requested ring models and what the different shapes of this jewel mean.

1 Solitaire. It is the most popular and popular engagement ring: it has a diamond mounted on its own, with no other stones around it, on a metal band. Symbolic meaning: one diamond, one love. The stem can be in gold, most of the time white, or platinum, very rarely in silver or titanium. The solitaire ring symbolizes the commitment of a woman who agrees to marry the man who gives her the jewel. But, worn over time, it remains the sign of exclusive love. The solitaire can also be worn after marriage, together with the wedding band.

2 Eternity. Ring with a metal band (usually white gold) and a continuous line of gems (usually diamonds, but they are also offered with different stones, such as emeralds, rubies or sapphires). As the name indicates, eternity symbolizes love that never ends. It is a ring often given by a husband to his wife on an anniversary, usually after ten years of marriage. If the diamonds set do not follow the entire circumference, but only a part (also to make it more comfortable to wear), it is also defined as half-eternity. But in this case the concept is the same: eternal love (and even a minor expense).

3 Wedding ring. It is the classic wedding ring, the most used. It is characterized by a usually smooth metal, most often yellow gold. The width is variable, it depends on your tastes. The ring offers the possibility to engrave the wedding date or the name of the wife or husband inside. Introduced by the ancient Romans, the wedding ring symbolizes the commitment made to marriage. The wedding ring is generally worn on the left hand on the ring finger, while in Central-Eastern Europe, and also in the Iberian Peninsula (except Catalonia), it is used to put it on the right.

4 Toi et Moi. It is a ring with two similar, but not necessarily the same, stones set facing each other. A contrast, but also a union of two different personalities, which complement each other. It is a ring that symbolizes a close relationship between two people. Giving this ring as a gift is a bit like saying: always carry me with you. It is also a ring that allows designers and jewelers to test their imagination: rings of this type can be made with two simple stones, or with the choice of bold combinations.

5 Phalanx ring. This ring has a smaller diameter than a normal ring: in fact, it is worn on the first or second phalanx of the finger. Used in antiquity, it is back in fashion now. But you need to pay attention to the size: it must be the right size so as not to risk losing it. It is usually very thin, light, often made of metal only, without stones.

6 Trinity. Ring designed by Cartier in 1924 and heavily imitated. It consists of three different metal bands of different colors and with different symbologies: pink gold indicates love, yellow gold is chosen as a sign of fidelity (because it recalls the wedding ring) and, finally, white gold signals friendship. The three metal bands intersect to form a single ring. Much appreciated especially by young people. It is also proposed with some variations, for example, with the use of stones set in the metal.

7 Trilogy. Not to be confused with the trinity ring. The trilogy ring indicates a metal band with three stones mounted, usually diamonds. It looks like a solitaire ring, but multiplied by three. The meaning? Well, if you search on Google you will find quite a few. But the real thing is: my dear, I can’t spend on one large diamond ring, but with three small ones I get (almost) the same effect. And that’s right.

8 Ring with secret. In fashion in the Middle Ages (they were also used to hide poison), they are now small and complex works of art. This type of ring came back into fashion in the Victorian era, because the secret compartment could be used to hold a message, a small portrait of the lover, or a symbol. It sounds unbelievable, but at that time there were no messages on Whastapp. They are bulky rings and the secret compartment today often reserves surprises.

9 Cocktail ring. Born during the years of Prohibition in the United States, these were worn by women at banned alcohol-based parties. Large, showy, with colored stones, they are afternoon or early evening rings. They symbolize, as the name indicates, the desire to have fun and a little to transgress. Given the size and bright colors, however, they are not easy to match with the dress.

10 Halo. The name indicates a ring with a diamond or other central stone and a crown of smaller gems around it. It is a gimmick of jewelry designers that serves to increase the visual impact of the stones, without having to resort to a larger and more expensive gem. It is a type of setting widely used for both demanding and less expensive rings.

The secrets of cocktail rings

Do you like cocktail rings? Do you know why they are called that? Here is their story and how to wear a cocktail ring ♦

Do you know why some rings are defined as cocktails? The story dates back to about a century ago: during the 1920s, too much alcohol was drunk, according to the Us government. Thus began the period of Prohibition: in the United States liquors could not be sold. This ban, as they described books like the Great Gatsby or films like those with the character of Al Capone, in those years pushed the growth of the clandestine sale of alcohol.

In hidden places, where often gambling was also played, rebels gathered who wanted to party and drink cocktails despite the law. Alcoholic beverages were consumed clandestinely in bars known as speakeasies. To serve intoxicating drinks, different types of alcohol were mixed, thus giving rise to the cocktail. Even emancipated women soon conquered speakeasies. With their trendy short and baggy dresses, and their cheeky haircuts, the so-called flappers were the influencers of the time: they smoked, danced to jazz, with a cocktail glass in their right hand and a ring with a big shape and gaudy color. Objective: to attract attention.

Flappers, in fact, loved luxurious dresses and elegant jewels, pearl necklaces, diadems and piles of bracelets. And also large ornamental rings, worn in the same hand that wielded the cocktail prohibited by law. Thus was born that type of ring was called cocktail, soon becoming a status symbol. And you no longer need to sip a martini to wear it.

In general, a cocktail ring has generous dimensions, it is made with the use of precious or colored stones, with very bright colors, it is suitable for social occasions, parties, parties, in the afternoon and in the evening, but not for evenings gala. Be attention also to the combination with the dress: the strong colors of the ring stand out and must be coordinated with those of the clothing.

All the singularities of Alexander Laut

Alexander Laut is a special type. Born in 1967 in Russia, jeweler in Hawaii, he loves water and loves to swim. He once explained that his surname translates into Indonesian and Malay as sea, sea in English, and his zodiac sign is (obviously) that of pisces. And the jewels? He prefers cocktail rings, but above all pearls grown in the sea. Does he seem a strange guy to you? Maybe you don’t know that he studied medicine, he worked as a journalist, photographer and gallery owner, until he approached the jewelry and the world of gems.

Even its namesake brand has a different history than usual. He was born in 2003 after his meeting with Ronald Winston, son and heir of the great Harry Winston. It was he who convinced Alexander Laut to put his talent to good use. Particularly large and rare stones, colored diamonds, rubies, sapphires, spinel and tourmalines are the colors of his palette, alongside equally exceptional pearls. Each jewel made is unique, has its own identification number and signature of the author. The jewels are obviously all handmade, one piece at a time, by Japanese jewelers.

NeverNoT, the liveliness that cannot be denied

/

Never the future is sure, and never say never with NeverNoT. On the other hand, it was not easy for three women friends who came to London from distant Georgia, a country between Russia and Turkey, to invent a jewelry brand. Yet Nina Dzhokhadze, Natia Chkhartishvili and Tamara Svanidze have succeeded. And the capital letters of the Maison’s name indicate the names of the founders: Dzhokhadze manages sales and business development from London, while Chkhartishvili and Svanidze manage design and manufacturing in their native Georgia.

Stephen Webster celebrates 25 years of Crystal Haze

x

In 1995, after two years of development, Stephen Webster released Crystal Haze, a special gem set in chunky gold settings. Thanks to this innovation, the cocktail ring has become an icon of the London jeweler. Success came when Madonna bought one. The Crystal Haze technique consists in the layering and bonding of two stones using laser cutting processes combined with traditional materials. The top layer is a highly faceted natural clear quartz, which becomes a magnifying glass to enhance the color of the underlying gemstone. Quartz allows light to enter from hundreds of different angles producing a kind of holographic haze that moves as the jewelry is turned.

Now the CH2 collection celebrates 25 years of the Crystal Haze effect. It goes without saying that the collection includes many rings, but not only that, The faceted surface of the quartz is also used for bracelets, earrings, necklaces, all in 18K gold and all with Crystal Haze as an integral part. Besides these layered gems, in addition, diamonds with different cut, either round or baguette are added. The result is always glam.

Giovanni Ferraris doubles with Anastasia

The transformable rings of the Anastasia collection by Giovanni Ferraris ♦ ︎
Anastasia was one of the daughters of the last Russian Tsar, who was said to have been mysteriously escaped from death. But it is also a name of Greek origin that has the meaning of resurrection. Choose which of these figures may have inspired the Anastasia collection by Giovanni Ferraris. The Maison of Valenza, after from success to Las Vegas Couture (we talked about it here) has relaunched at VicenzaOro this series of cocktail rings of great impact. Wonderful, sumptuous, finely crafted, exclusive in the choice of large faceted stones such as citrine quartz, tourmaline, topaz, which marry with gold trim and diamonds. Nice? Not only. The Anastasia collection rings are also ingenious and, like the mysterious Russian Princess, conceal a secret. Or, better, they hide a mechanism that allows them to double. The stem, in fact (as you can see in the video) can be worn on a single finger, or it can be opened to be tucked on two fingers simultaneously. Alessia Mongrando

Two cocktails for Roberto Coin

Two new cocktail rings for Roberto Coin. They use jade and malachite next to gold and diamonds ♦ ︎

It is well known that the cocktail ring was invented by the flapper, the new generation of women who in the 1920s, during Prohibition in the United States, began to use shorter skirts, shorter hair, listen to jazz music, and in general to show off their contempt for the good manners. Attitude that included wearing fancy rings, much larger and brighter than normal solitaire or simple wedding rings. The concept of cocktail ring was then elaborated to become a jewelery type. Rings that you see, with generous sizes. But, of course, every designer has his way of interpreting cocktail rings. Like Roberto Coin, a Venetian designer with an international passport, has added new cocktail rings to his catalog: the jewel of maxi proportions is reinterpreted through a universe of shapes and nuances that use the colors of jade and malachite next to diamonds and gold. Lavinia Andorno

Roberto Coin is back in the Garden

Roberto Coin is still flourish with Garden collection ♦
The Garden Collection “reinterprets the eternal fascination of secret gardens in precious and expressive notes. Rings and pendants elate the imagination towards an enchanted world that looks charming with rich details from unexpected and extraordinary forms”, and so on. Without detracting from the poetry of company announcements, certainly necessary, the truth is otherwise: the Garden collection was introduced in 2014 by the designer of Vicenza, now a citizen of world, and it was simply inspired by his garden where, with his wife, he likes to spend free time.
Trivial? Not at all: who has the gift of creativity is inspired by what surrounds him, then he turns it, transfigures it, interprets it. So, in contrast, it takes on even more value the ability to transfer to metal and stones floral aspects of nature in elaborate cocktail rings or earrings. The collection has received the right success and so, three years later, the jewelry line is further renewed with some new entries presented at Baselworld. Indicative prices: the less elaborate rings are less than 5,000 euro, a pendant with a topaz rises above 8,000. Giulia Netrese

Garavelli in four colors

The Garavelli formula (tradition plus innovation) works: it introduces jewels a few at a time, with a cautious but sure proposal of new pieces, it’s good for the Piedmont Maison. Now, for example, the brand that is close to reaching the milestone of a century of history, adds to its collection Dune four cocktails rings of considerable proportions and bright colors: yellow, white, pink and blackened gold. A surprise, if you compare with the now classic collections of the company led by Elisabetta Molina. Although the company was born and remains active in an area from the conservative professional attitudes (in a good way) as that of Valenza, Garavelli loves the introduction of technological issues. In this case, for example, a special galvanic finish with micro-ceramic components, that is, nano ceramic. One technique that has allowed to preserve the aesthetics together with the robustness. But not only: this system, they explain in Garavelli, it allows you to restore the color after many years, if it is tarnished. As for repair, you can simply return the ring to the jeweler to have it as new.
