Jewelry in yellow

A yellow for the summer, but also for the other months. If you like the color of the sun, here is a series of jewels that warm any heart ♦

There was a time in which the yellow color of the stones was considered ambiguous. Maybe it’s because yellow is synonymous with mystery. A long period was dominated by white diamonds, transparent, without color. Glittering, but only sensitive to light reflections. Then came the big fancy-mania, that is a passion for those diamonds that until a few years ago were considered defective, almost unpresentable.

Now the yellow diamonds (but also brown or blue) have record prices. And in the wake of the success of the other lemon-colored diamond, the stones yellow like the sun are revalued. The yellow stones are matched with white gold, but even with that of the gold nugget. So the jewelers in recent years have proposed a series of pieces that enhance the yellow stones, such as citrine. For the uninitiated, the citrine is a variety of quartz, whose yellow color is due, say gemologists, to trivalent iron impurities. The natural citrine quartz is relatively rare, but it is a lot on the market because in reality it is quartz amethyst or smoky quartz. These crystals are heat treated to achieve the colors yellow-orange. Well, the stones are a bit ‘cooked, but they like them. Here is a review of rings that have the yellow colour  as the common denominator.

Not only. Lovers of yellow stones can also choose from other alternatives. For example, yellow topaz is a rarer variety than the blue-toned gemstone, but it often has a subtle shade that coordinates well with a pastel-colored dress. Another choice can be the beryl stone, also available in a yellow shade. Finally, we must not forget the stone that goes by the name of cat’s eye, which less poetically is silicon dioxide combined with hornblende. This gem also has a deeper shade of yellow and feline undertones.

The Transparency of Vianna

In Brazil, but also in the United States, the Vianna brand is associated with jewelry made up of large gems. It is no coincidence that the company was born in the Brazilian state where the largest number of mines are concentrated, around Belo Horizonte. The story began when Raymundo Nonato Vianna, a goldsmith craftsman, founded the family-run jewelry store. The company was then led by Raymundo, Ricardo and Romulo Vianna, who founded Vianna Brasil in 1984, based in Belo Horizonte. Success then prompted them to multiply their activities, particularly in the US, in Florida, where the company has opened an office, while the jewels are distributed throughout the country.

Alongside high-end jewels, the company has also launched Vianna Fashion, a brand that offers equally interesting jewels, but with less expensive materials, such as vermeil (gold-plated silver) and large, but more affordable stones, such as smoky quartz. amethyst or topaz. An example is the Trasparenza collection (written like this, in Italian), which offers rings and earrings that enhance the clarity of colored stones.

Why precious stones are heated?

Precious and semi-precious stones in the great majority are heated at high temperatures. Or subjected to radiation. That’s why

If the precious stones warm your heart is perhaps because in turn have been heated. Not from your eyes, but from an electric furnace which can reach 1,600 degrees. The thermal treatment of precious and semiprecious stones is known to jewelers and gemologists, but little known to the general public, that is, those who buy jewelry that flaunt jewels of deep red, deep blue sapphires, aquamarines transparent. In fact, the colored stones that are sold as natural are a small minority, most end up in the oven, without the intervention of a chef. We see, then, what is the heat treatment of gemstones.

Un sacchetto di rubini estratti in una miniera birmana
Un sacchetto di rubini estratti in una miniera birmana

Warm color
The stones are heated above all to bring out the colors. During treatment the stone is heated to very high temperatures (up to about 1600 degrees Celsius). At this temperature the inclusions (small amounts of other minerals) present in the stone melt and add their own color to the stone. Usually, therefore, the heated stone becomes darker, of a more intense hue. This is the case, for example, of rutile in the blue sapphires. There are also sapphires, known as Gouda, which are extracted from the ground milk and white sapphires turn blue when heated. Even the rubies are almost always heated (except exceptions): with the heat the aluminum oxide in the stone creates a new crystalline structure and the chromium is combined in a different way, allowing a better shade of red. Another effect of the heat is that it can improve the transparency of the stone, thanks to the destruction of any gas or fluid inclusions.

How to find them
Do you have a ring with a natural stone or heated? The question should be: what does it matter? But if you are curious to know, you must contact a gemologist with a microscope. And even so will not be easy to find out. The gemologists, however, can examine the internal state of the stone, inclusions, and look for signs of heat treatment. In general, if the stone is perfect or has exceptional value, or has been treated.
What stones are heated
Here the stones more easily end up in the oven: amethyst, citrine, ametrine, aquamarine, tourmaline, topaz, sapphire, ruby, tanzanite, blue zircon.

Irradiation

In addition to being heated, precious and semi-precious stones can be subjected to radiation. The question is: are they dangerous then? No, no problem: they are under strict control, just like when you go to the hospital for a chest screen. And, in any case, before leaving the laboratory the stones are checked to ensure that they do not emit dangerous radiation. After all, many gems are naturally subjected to radiation when underground. The irradiation that takes place in the laboratory serves to strengthen or change the color. A stone often subjected to radiation is blue topaz, which in nature is found with a very light shade. Often the two treatments, the thermal and the radioactive one, are combined: each one manages to improve a different aspect of the stone.

The Irises bloom on Ponte Vecchio

Ponte Vecchio Gioielli, a Florentine company that has chosen the name of the famous place in the Tuscan city, was inspired by a flower, Iris, for its collection made of 18-karat gold, diamonds and semi-precious stones such as garnet, citrine, topaz, amethyst. All stones with bright colors, just as the character of the Tuscans is notoriously exuberant. Starting with the founder and current owner of the Maison, Ugo Calà.

It is worthwhile to open a parenthesis on a world that no longer exists: the story of the company tells that Ugo Calà was little more than a child when he helped his father in the barber shop, which was located right next to the Ponte Vecchio. Obviously the workshop was frequented by the goldsmiths who worked precisely in the workshops that are located near or right on the famous bridge. Ugo then decided to become an apprentice of one of the most famous jewelers of the Ponte Vecchio. The result is called Ponte Vecchio Gioielli, a goldsmith company that also works on behalf of third parties.

The roots of Ippolita

The new creations by Ippolita Rostagno, an Italian designer transplanted to the United States ♦

From the rolling Tuscan hills to those of California and then to the straight avenues of New York: Ippolita Rostagno, born in Florence, moved to the USA when she was 19 years old (her mother is American). She enrolled in Occidental College, Los Angeles, the same one who attended Barack Obama. She gave herself to dance, founding a company. Then, a little by chance, she became a jewelry star. “In the late 1990s, I started designing jewelry first for my daughter, then for others,” she said.

Orecchini in oro con turchese, topazio blu, peridoto, corniola, tormalina rosa, amazzonite

In 1999, she recalls, the jewels were mainly traditional ones and worn only on special occasions. This is why she chose to design jewelry that could be worn every day and on all occasions. Evidently she had the right touch: after a few years her necklaces, earrings and rings, with the Ippolita brand, appeared on the skin of stars like Hilary Swank, Uma Thurman, Susan Saradon, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz.

From Italy, however, she has retained the taste and ability to assort those colors that have remained in memory. Like the collection of topaz , rock crystal and citrine-based jewels, which you see on this page, which recall the shades of the Tuscan hills after the summer harvest. Her jewels do not skimp on gold, diamonds and precious stones, but occasionally some unusual material appears, such as resin. But Italy is also present in another initiative: the Artemest online portal, dedicated to quality craftsmanship. Giulia Netrese

John Dyer’s exclusive cut gems

Look at the citrine cut in the shape of a star by master gemologist John Dyer: it is one of the gems with an exceptional shape proposed by the Michigan expert. Its cuts called with names like StarBrite, Super Trillion or ZigZag have revolutionized the traditionalist market of precious and semi-precious stones.

Citrino con taglio StarBrite da 29,96 carati di John Dyer & Co

Years ago Dyer received the first prize in the German agreement dedicated to Jewels and precious stones. The judges unanimously gave top marks to a 88.17-carat orange-red citrine stone, which measures 52.6 millimeters in length and 20 mm in width. The theme of the contest was entitled Light My Fire, and Dyer hit the ground.

The American master carver has won nearly 50 awards since 2002: he is considered one of the leading experts and an innovator. The original award-winning gemstone, for example, weighed 335.50 carats, while the final product represents about a quarter of that weight. The cutting process took four days. Dyer is able to enhance the characteristics of a gem with a particularly refined cut, which takes advantage of the brightness produced by the reflections. Examples are some of the stones, which you see on this page, where you can admire the meticulous work of faceting. Among other things, Dyer has also made a video that teaches how to distinguish a well cut stone from a bad quality one. Federico Graglia

In the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, which in Portuguese language means “General Mines”, four generations ago, Vianna family started its activity (https://gioiellis.com/il-carnevale-brasiliano-di-vianna/). Vianna Brasil has become, over time, a guarantee of precious gems, sparkling, colorful. Well, the stones aren’t all mined at “kilometer zero”, but have become the brand’s strength, now recognized internationally.

As in Vianna Lux or Amorfous collections, which despite its name has jewels with a form and, above all, a paletteo f very specific colors. Look, for example, the yellow gold earrings with prasiolite, citrine white, lavender amethyst and diamonds. Or the white gold earrings with blue topaz and diamonds. But not only all the pieces of Amorfous collection offer to eyes the spectacle of large stones and sometimes impressive. They have a striking appearance. All About Citrine

If you like colored stones, you certainly love citrine. It is one of the most fashionable stones and, not least, among the most cheerful. Here’s all you need to know about citrine, it’s the other November stone along with yellow topaz ♦

The name. Citron in French is the fruit of the lemon, word derived from the Latin Citrus. The fruit is yellow as, indeed, the color of the stone. But in ancient times the citrine was considered less poetically a yellow quartz (and indeed from a scientific point of view is a yellow quartz): the term citrine took over only after 1556. Even less appeal is the definition of “merchant stone” because at one time it was believed he would bring luck in business. Unfortunately, it has remained a mere supposition.

Derek Katzenbach, citrino intagliato
Derek Katzenbach, citrino intagliato

It was also considered a magic stone, like many others. In the Middle Ages some had even spread the rumor that it was effective to protect against the plague, from snake venom from spider bites and even from the evil people. Likely, though, that the citrine powers did not worked with those who have put about this nonsense.

Anello in oro giallo, diamanti e citrini
Gringoire, anello in oro giallo, diamanti e citrino

Color. As the name indicates, the citrine is yellow. It is practically impossible without technical means, to distinguish it from a topaz, to the naked eye, but the difference is the hardness. In truth, the stones that are set on jewels are heated citrine: the stone in its natural state has a rather pale color. When heated, however, it takes on a shade amber, almost orange. Rather than citrine it should call orangine, is not it?

Andrew Grima, anello in oro con citrino e diamanti, 1969
Andrew Grima, anello in oro con citrino e diamanti, 1969

Provenance. Many citrines come from the Brazilian mines, but if you go on the hunt for citrine you can also try in Madagascar, Zambia, Namibia, in the Urals in Russia. Often they are found where there are amethysts. It also there is a citrine record of 2,258 carats, guarded at the Smithsonian in Washington. In general, however, on jewelry the stones are below 25 carats.

How to clean them. Citrine jewels can be cleaned by immersing the jewel in a cup of warm water, adding a couple of drops of detergent. After about ten minutes, gently rub the jewel with a toothbrush with soft bristles, then rinse.

The monkeys by Bibi van der Velden: luxury and irony walk together ♦ ︎

Bibi van der Velden has become famous for jewelry fans who love innovation also for the use of unusual materials such as mammoth tusks or scarab wings. But also for a subtle irony that surrounds a very innovative design. These two qualities, irony and design, are found in the Monkey collection. In fact, the collection is presented as follows: “Monkeys are among the most entertaining and intelligent animals on Earth, representing fun and flexibility. We never get enough of these fascinating species and their beloved bananas and we could not think of a better inspiration for our new jewelry designs.” In short, monkeys and bananas are really cheerful elements.
But you should not underestimate the more technical aspect: the bananas are made by working lemon quartz, the palm leaves are of green tsavorite, while the monkeys are in 18-carat rose gold and silver, with brown and white diamonds. Prices: almost 3000 euros for the simplest earrings, over 6000 for pendants with bananas up to over 11000 euros for the ring. In any case, luxury and fun can be together: it’s a good idea. Antonini goes for three

Moi et Troi rings, composed of three gems mounted on gold: mini collection with a touch of humor ♦ ︎
They passed almost in silence, “hidden” by the other stronger collections, such as Syracuse, Extraordinaire or Etna. But Antonini for 2018 also presented three rings that are worth observing. The rings are called, with subtle humor, Troi et Moi. The word play refers to the exchange between the word Toi (you, in French) and Troi (three, always in the language of Molière). Toi et Moi is a classic setting for rings, which consists in opposition of two ends of the jewel’s stem, which usually end with a gem. In this case, however, the stones are three, hence the calembour. The rings are made of black rhodium gold or yellow or pink gold. The stones used are blue topaz, citrine and smoky quartz. Always for three, of course. Alessia Mongrando

A Venus for Casato

Casato enriches its Venus collection with new jewels and three colored stones ♦
Discovered for those who do not know it, rediscovered for those who had missed it: Venus rises from the waters of the jewelery on the wave driven by Casato. The Roman Maison has decided to enrich one of its most successful collections, Venus, with rings, earrings and gold and enamel pendants in five different colors, with shades bright. Now the jewels of the collection proposed by Casato include amethyst, blue topaz and citrine. The stones are cut in the shape of a heart or pillow. The style is quite rich, almost baroque: you can imagine jewels in the background of the sixteenth-century palaces of Bernini’s Rome.
But, perhaps, the most innovative aspect is the ability to customize jewels by adding the name of the name to the enamel. A chance probably appreciated by those who want to make (or do herself) a gift. Giulia Netrese

The generous Jolie said: “The Smithsonian has educated so many of us, this gem is a symbol of our efforts to help educate underprivileged children in conflict zones in the world.” Matilde de Bounvilles
