Cartier changes management

Tour of seats on the upper floors of the jewelery: the managing director (Ceo) of Cartier, Stanislas de Quercize, resigned and changes desk. The decision surprised many. The manager will be replaced by Cyrille Vigneron, president of LVMH Japan. On the other hand, de Quercize passes on the top floor: in fact, will be the new president of the group Richemont France, the parent company that controls brands of jewelry as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. Vigneron is currently chairman of LVMH Japan (group which owns brands such as Bulgari, Chaumet and De Beers Diamond Jewellers) and has already worked for Richemont from 1988 to 2013. It is, in short, a return. The change of chairs will be formally in January 2016. Federico Graglia

Rahul Kadakia, the guru of the jewels

The numbers to eight digits achieved in jewelry auctions are no longer an exception: «A decade ago, you’d only hear these numbers in pictures sales; a Picasso sold for $10 million, a Van Gogh for $20 million», says Rahul Kadakia, international director of Christie’s jewelry department, in an interview with the American magazine Robb Report. The expert of the London-based company entered the orbit of the multinational luxury Kering, describes it as an moving and booming phenomenon . And the results of the auctions last year confirm this: the  Blue Belle of Asia sapphire, a 392 carat stone, was sold in Geneva for 17 million 500 thousand dollars, a record; the Belle Époque brooch by Cartier made 17 million 900 thousand US dollars. And, again, a ruby necklace at auction in Hong Kong for 13 million dollars. Here the interview.

It’s a spinel record

Hope is the spinel record. The large stone octagonal cutting was sold by Bonhams for almost one and a half million dollars, or 30 thousand dollars per carat, the highest price ever achieved. And to think that a few years ago was sold for 122 thousand dollars, now it has increased almost tenfold value. Spinel Hope, weighing 50.13 carats, is set into griffe with brilliant-cut diamonds, mounted in silver and gold. It can be also a brooch, a pendant, part of a larger gem. Surely, however, this gemstone auctioned by Bonhams has a long history behind it (found here: https://gioiellis.com/vendita-lo-spinello-hope). But in the auction there were also other interesting pieces. Tutti Frutti bracelet by Cartier, Art Deco, was sold for 700 thousand dollars. A bracelet of Suzanne Belperron “Torsade” of 1932, he was beaten for nearly two and a half times its estimate: 250 thousand dollars, a figure that has surprised many. A jewel that, instead, it was not placed, with a even bigger surprise, was an emerald ring signed Van Cleef & Arpels: was estimated 190-230mila euro. Other results: a ring with a natural pearl was sold for 314mila dollars. A pair of earrings from Cartier Art Deco period, diamond, 1925 have made 204mila dollars. A pearl necklace with sapphires and diamonds called 213 thousand dollars. Federico Graglia

Dazzling Cartier

It’s not easy to translate in one word the French adjective «étourdissant», chosen by Cartier to describe his collection of fine jewelry. But you could use the sentence «as dazzling so much that stun you». In fact it is unique and special that surprise not only for the color and size of the stones, as would be assumed given the name. And, indeed, the great rubies, sapphires, emeralds and diamonds are a classic fine jewelry precisely. Of course, there is also this in Étourdissant Cartier, but also all the stylistic history of the House, iconic themes declined in an astounding for materials and forms.

For example, take the famous Tutti Frutti design with gems, other than the usual four more precious gems. It could be a risk, but the elegance and harmony of the bracelet and earrings Été Indien, with garnets tangerine and eggplant colour, surrounding a rare from Ethiopia opal milky, shows the great skill of its craftsmen and the ability of those who draws them. Mix of colored stones and engraved for the ring with garnets Pushkar green and orange, and purple tanzanite, which is close to the traditional version represented by the bracelet Hyerabad (can be worn as a bracelet or choker), with a large central Colombian emerald carved, combined with rubies, sapphires and diamonds. The black, red and green, ie the typical colors of Art Deco and of the Maison, come back with onyx, coral with a special shade from orange and green with agates in place of jade in Teinte bracelet, flamboyant finery. Another reason taken from the past, it had been introduced in the forties by creative director Jeanne Toussaint, the beads baptized Coffee Bean for their shape, which like so many soft pink berries make up the line Arabica. And finally, the piece de resistance of the collection: the Romanov bracelet, with an extraordinary Ceylon sapphire of nearly 200 carats, about the size of a matchbox. It was belonged to Empress Russian Tsarina Maria Feodorovna. Admire him in these images because it seems to have already been sold. M.d.B.

7 incredible jewelry

Every so often you should take a few minutes to observe the best there is: we chose these seven exceptional jewelry, all sold by Artcurial, because they are a good example of what can become a jewel. That is a masterpiece of technique, composition, imagination. Are all examples different from each other, precisely because some enhance the color of a stone, others focus on the difficult art of representing objects or animals, some are a flight of creativity abstract. The seven jewels that we have chosen have also been made at different times in the history of jewelry, and summarize, therefore, also fashions and styles, but also the history of costume and art, which are the main cultural elements which are reflected in the jewelry. Sure, they are pieces of particular importance and only a few can afford to own them, even fewer women have the opportunity (and a little ‘courage) to wear them. Look at them well. Giulia Netrese

Secrets of Place Vendome

Place Vendôme, one of the mythical places of jewelry. And also a vantage point to understand trends, including those of marketing, for an object so sophisticated and privileged as the result of the combination of passion, manual skills and artistic sensibility. Place Vendome is the virtual capital of the jewelry, which is overlooked by the windows of jewelers sometimes with a tradition centennial as Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels, Piaget and Cartier. And the Paris square is the starting point of a long investigation that the French newspaper Les Echos, dedicated to the world of jewelry. To understand what is the future and what are the new sales techniques. The article is signed by Sandrine Merle.
Secrets of jewelers
Beyond the beauty of their creations, jewelers struggle to convince their customers: new experiences, and showcases with iconic choreography. It’s their recipe for seduction. Buy jewelry that cost thousands, even millions of euro is not an ordinary act. The first challenge of the jewelers is to make buying an extraordinary experience. “Customers want to know where, how and why their jewelry are designed and manufactured,” says Pierre Rainero, director for the style of Cartier. (…)
By Harry Winston, Cartier and Piaget a piece of jewelry is also the result of a long history. Nothing better than a visit to the heart of the archives, drawings, orders, antique jewelry to understand the inspirations of Mellerio. In the Chaumet museum there are a thousand and one echo the work of artistic director, Claire must-Rakoff. As the apartment of Mademoiselle Chanel’s at Rue Cambon, speaks for itself, with camellias, lions and the 5, the lucky number of the designer. “This place is open only in exceptional cases,” says the director of jewelry, Benjamin Comar, reminiscent of other occasions such as parades, exhibitions and launch of Chanel’s collections. And the Bulgari customers still remember the fabulous dinner at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. (…)
The stones, which cost exorbitant prices are a real investment, do not keep the “stoniness” shadows. Who travels the world in search of gems, can share with customer the emotions derived from these natural treasures. Lucia Silvestri for Bulgari, Thierry Robert for Boucheron, can tell them what is a combination, namely an assortment of stones by size or color, or inclusion, a defect that can also give an indefinable charm gem. Van Cleef & Arpels has had the idea of putting together all his experiences in his school, which opened in 2012. “We thought of a platform to extend our relationship with our customers,” says the president of the Maison, Nicolas Bos. There you can attend lessons of history or technique, taught by historians and experts. Customers thus become specialists who do not buy just a design or a sign of wealth. I am also aware of the work that goes into a piece of fine jewelry and will include the price. Then, they are more willing to wait a few months for the object of their mad desire.
Shines the eye
The experience may also take the form a priori more traditional and more open “to all new arrivals”: the shop windows. Today the cure is extreme. Now the windows look like small theatrical scenes in which we tell stories which can stir the imagination, surprise and encourage a stop in front of the glass. For Annie Beaumel, priestess of the showcase of Hermès (between 1927 and 1978), “should not be a display, but a work of imagination, whimsy, fantasy, colors.” “The difficulty lies in the disproportion between the size of the display case and jewelry,” says Soline d’Aboville of set designers preferred by jewelers. “The window shop is used to capture the attention from afar, while the jewel must be visible up close …”. The windows express more the story of a brand by introducing systematic recognition codes. The Red and the panther for Cartier. The lion, black and white, and the Chanel camellia. New York for Tiffany & Co. The environment of fashion for Dior.
Brand and symbols
For Louis Vuitton elements correspond to those that characterize the brand: the cloverleaf of fortune, the hot-air balloon or, more recently, the letter V. By Van Cleef & Arpels, are the Jules Verne tale: The voyages, the Skin Donkey, and ballet Les Bals de légende, in a firework of light, color and optical illusions. The look can not be separated by thousands of micro-details, from the texts with letters inspired by Gustave Doré. At Tiffany & Co., the windows are breathtaking. There are, for a couple of months, the jewels of the collection Gatsby Le Magnifique: they were presented on two hands holding each a glass of champagne, on a background of glass bubbles. Giant crystal chandeliers dominate the scene. These windows follow the tradition of Gene Moore, “the father of all the window dressers and visual merchandiser,” says Soline d’Aboville. Has built about 5 thousand for the American fashion house and was the first to introduce contemporary art. He finds himself in the windows shop the manual dexterity which is so dear to jewelers: are involved countless skills, as Christel Sadde, and furniture designer. He has created a set unusual and fascinating for Chaumet, with gold medals perforated. For its part, Mathilde Nivet works with paper, extremely popular material for jewelry. Fred, Mellerio, Bulgari, Chaumet: many have turned to the poetry of his work, to his ability to carve, bend, cut this material in feathers, flowers, castles.
The casket secret
Last secret, the attention to the packaging, which is part of the art of gift. It is at the center of a ceremony that serves to better savor the discovery. “It get euphoric, multiplies the mystery. It opens with pleasure and surprise,” say at Cartier. Which is recognizable at first sight. Famous for everyone, highlighted in red leather with decorative lace in gold, was part diu all advertising campaigns and all the windows. One packaging developed by the Maison Vuitton in 2001, when he started with the jewelry, it is equally recognizable: it takes the form of a canvas with the famous Monogram and is made in the laboratories of the house, in Asnieres.
A challenge, because the artisans capable of this work are now in danger. And the prices are astronomical: 2 thousand euro for the casket of a necklace, made of poplar wood and leather lining. For the designer Marie-Hélène de Taillac, it was still out of the question to move to the manufacture in Asia: “It is extremely important, their part in shaping the identity of the fashion house,” he says. His treasures are divided with skins of different colors and perfectly match the jewels and his shop: pink, green, purple, etc. All are designed to the last detail, with the favorite motifs shown on the edge. Inside, the color changes according to the one of the precious stones. Even the sound dull and sharp lid during its closure is designed …
In terms of creativity, anything is possible. Valerie Messika has designed a special environment for engagement rings. “The idea came to me when my husband gave me my ring, at night, on the beach,” he remembers, and describes the little black box that lights up when you open. Enough to give ideas to the great romantics. At Fred, a box has been specially designed for the ring Sugarloaf: different accommodations are possible for its removable stones. One of the most original ideas was, a few years ago, that of Solange Azagury-Partridge, then artistic director of Boucheron: a lined interior with dark mink, for fine jewelry. What better way to blend the brilliance of a jewel in the hundreds of thousands of dollars?
According to Julie Valade, director of the department of jewelry Artcurial, “in the case of a modern jewel, the packaging is a plus.” Especially if it is a jewel signed. The packaging of an old piece can also help determine the authenticity of the latter. For collectors, is a form of guarantee. “It can also be a source of many surprises …” said the jeweler Mellerio, which has just celebrated its 400th anniversary. In fact, the chests of the jewels of the nineteenth century often had secret doors that hid a pin, a pendant, a screwdriver or messages… intimate. Place Vendôme has not yet revealed all its secrets.

Cartier in color with Amulette

Spring is coming for Amulette Cartier collection too. One year after the debut ((https://gioiellis.com/10084), we anticipate the colors of the new version: the dark green malachite, the lightest shade of chrysoprase, the deep blue of lapis lazuli, the delicate pink opal and the warm red of carnelian set in the new models of earrings and rings. In the original collection bracelets and necklaces were only available in white mother of pearl, black onyx and white studded with diamonds. Sure, a combination very sophisticated, but perhaps a little ‘limited as wearability. Now the precious amulet is also a bit ‘sporty and can be worn on any occasion. Matilde de Bounvilles

Sotheby’s auctions of jewelry are coming back

The great auctions of great jewels are coming back: Sotheby’s March 18 will feature a selection of vintage jewelry and ancient pieces signed by some of the biggest producers in the world, including Cartier, Bulgari and Boucheron. The London Fine Jewels sale covers different eras of jewelry history, from the delicate creations of 18th century up to the new forms of Art Deco and the allure of modern style. But not only: for the fans of jewels will be auctioned also a rare collection of jewelry designs dated 1780.

One of the most valuable pieces is this brooch-pendant diamond of 1930, made by a series of tassels and diamond cutting different, with a large stone in the center. It is estimated between 33,500 and 46,900 Euros. The auction also includes examples of jewelry late 19th century, including two-brooches pendants with emeralds and diamonds. Always with a green gem stone is a ring with cabochon signed Tiffany & Co, valued between € 26800-40200. The jeweler, which worked in the Marais area, was the author, from the early years of the 20th century until the end of 1920, of some the most iconic designs of the period. Working largely, but not exclusively, for Cartier, has pioneered the use of new materials and has performed some of the most avant-garde creations. Among other things, Picq was the creator of the first Tutti Frutti Cartier, which was initially defined only as “pierres de couleur.” Made in 1920, the brooch garland that will be auctioned, meets emeralds, rubies and sapphires and is an early example of the style Tutti Frutti (evaluation: 4050-6700 EUR). About Cartier: there is a brooch coral signed by French jeweler, made with enamel and diamonds of 1930 shaped ladybug (8100-10800 €) and a diamond brooch in the shape of 1940 fox, with citrine, emerald pear-shaped and a sapphire trapezoidal (8100-10800 €).
