(Italiano) Sotheby’s, Blue Moon record
It was estimated at between 35 and 55 million dollars: the blue diamond, codenamed Blue Moon, was sold by Sotheby’s in Geneva for a median figure, 48.5 million (45 million euro). It is not the maximum, but it’s a new world auction record for a diamond of this color. The Blue Moon was sold, in fact, for over $ 4 million per carat, an unprecedented level. The stone is one of the largest fancy vivid blue diamond in the world, and has a weight of 03.12 carats, perfect internally. He also beat the previous record, held by Graff Pink (24.78 carats), sold in 2010 for 46.2 million dollars. Sign, in short, that the fever for colored stones continues unabated: just remember that last year Zoe Diamond, another blue stone, it was sold in New York for 3.3 million per carat.
More generally, the auction of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels has totalized 139 million, only slightly below the record for an auction of jewelry, set at Sotheby’s in Geneva in May. Among the pieces out, a ring with a superb Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink Diamond, sold for 13.9 million dollars, auction record for a diamond of this type. Even sapphires go very well. A ring with sapphireVery Fine and diamonds has more than doubled the pre-sale estimate, to 3.2 million. Even a brooch with ruby, sapphire and diamond Van Cleef & Arpels has exceeded expectations presale, passing from hand to 2.5 million, nearly five times its lowest estimate.
Of note is the tiara of diamonds, by Cartier, dated around 1909, sold for 799mila dollars, almost doubling its highest estimate. The tiara has an adventure story: was commissioned to Lady Allan from her husband, Sir Hugh Allan, and it survived at the famous naufragio of the Lusitania, together with its owner, in 1915. A ruby and other wonders in Hong Kong
If you like rubies, you must tune to Hong Kong, where Christie’s has decided to put on sale on December 1 a super gem. The auction, Magificent Jewels, has in agenda The Crimson Flame, a great Burmese ruby of an exceptional quality, color pigeon blood, of 15 carats. It is the most important ruby of this type offered at auction in Asia. The estimate is 10-15 million dollars. The auction also includes a spectacular array of diamonds, fancy diamonds, gemstones, jadeite and, of course, jewels of the great Maison. “The ruby seems to be the real star of Hong Kong,” said Vickie Sek, vice president and director of Christie’s jewelry department in Asia. Already this spring the red gem had seduced fans in another fiery auction.
As mentioned, the ruby is not the only excellent piece auction: in Christie’s catalog there is the Mogok’s Fiery Red, Fai Dee’s suite, that includes a pigeon blood Burmese ruby and diamond necklace (estimate 6-8 million dollars), a pair of earrings with ruby red blood diamonds (estimate: 2.9-4.1 million dollars), a Fancy Intense Pink diamond of 7.53 carats (estimate: 5.8 to 8.3 millions) and The Afghan Emerald, an extremely rare 10.11 carat emerald ring, with an untreated gem (natural), of impeccable clarity (estimate: 1-1.5millions).

Not for sale, however, other jewels in the exhibition with a selection of 30 pieces of one of the most popular designer Wallace Chan, «Dream Light Water». The exhibition will be staged at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and includes the Heritage in Bloom (https://gioiellis.com/heritage-in-bloom-collana-dei-record), a unique necklace with 24 diamonds, D, obtained from the great Cullinan Heritage of 507.55 carats. The largest diamond of necklace, round cut, internally flawless, is 104 carats.

The top lot of the sale was a diamond ring fancy yellow cushion cut, 75.56 carats, which realized $ 3.6 million (the estimate was 3-4 million). Success for a marquise cut diamond, D color, of 18.78 carats, sold for 1.5 million, followed by another D color diamond, heart shape of 12.75 carats, sold for 965 thousand dollars. In fourth place is still a fancy yellow cushion cut diamond of 34.12 carats, sold for 725mila dollars. In short, high prices, but we aren’t near records. They went well jewels signed by the big Maison. Two broochs of Tiffany & Co. designed in 1967 by Donald Claflin as pre-Columbian figures, with hats in pink tourmaline pear shaped, ceremonial dress in citrine in rectangular cut, their faces carved coral and turquoise feet, they were sold to about ten times their estimate. For one, with gold and turquoise sticks, and pear-shaped, were disbursed 233mila euro (the estimate was 10-15 thousand), while the other went for 137 thousand. At Christie’s the Spatial Concept by Fontana
Those who love jewelry designed by artists, such as limited production by Lucio Fontana, have a unique opportunity with Christie’s London on November 3rd. Among vases, glasses and forniture there is one of a kind piece: the Spatial Concept with slit bracelet of the Italian-Argentine painter well known for his holes and slashed canvas. In this case the jewel, number two from an edition of four, in gold with a diameter of six centimeters, unlike paintings from the rough surface, the tangible and irregular texture, has a smooth and polished surface but the burnished slit opens up to the space beyond it. So, even with other materials and bases, Fontana manages to express peremptory gesture of art. One of his painting, la Fine di Dio series Concetto Spaziale, dated 1963 was sold at a Christie’s auction in New York for 20.9 million dollars (18.5 million euro). The bracelet is estimated between 40,000 and 60,000 pounds (55,000 – 82,000 EUR).
Christie’s goes with yellow in NY
It comes another auction that focuses on an exceptional diamond: it is a stone of 75.56 carats, fancy yellow, that I will be sold at Christie’s in New York on 20 October. The estimate is of 3-4 million dollars. Fancy Vivid is the highest rank in the classification of colored diamonds and is considered an exceptional quality. But the ring is not the only outstanding piece for sale. In the auction catalog also appear another fancy yellow diamond ring from 34.12 carat cushion cut of platinum and 18K gold. There is also a pear-cut diamond ring on a yellow-green, from 7.11 carats. The auction house, as you can see from the pictures, also sells a number of pieces signed David Webb, as well of Maison as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Tiffany. Here are some of the pieces that will go to auction. Federico Graglia
A big diamond pink in auction by Christie’s
Christie’s is selling the largest Fancy Vivid Pink diamond cushion-cut. The stone is 16.08 carats and has an estimated value of 23 million to 28 million dollars. It will be auctioned by Christie’s Magnificent Jewels on November 10 in Geneva. The diamond is mounted on a ring, with a double row of white pavé diamonds, which surround and highlight the main stone. Not only: the jewel has a third row of small diamonds in pink. The band is covered by small white diamonds on platinum. To appreciate the stone (and tempt potential buyers), from October the pink diamond will be on tour from Hong Kong, and then to New York and London before the exhibition and sale in Geneva.
In the realm of natural colored diamonds, those of a sharp pink hues are among the most sought after by fans of gemstones. Most pink diamonds have a tendency to purple, orange, brown or gray. The pink diamond Christie’s, however, has no trace of a secondary color: an aspect that makes it extremely attractive. From a standpoint of gemology, this Fancy Vivid pink ranks as a type IIa diamond, which contain little or no nitrogen. A common aspect that only less than 2 percent of all diamonds. According to the Gemological Institute of America are features that have only a diamond in a hundred thousand. If you have almost 30 million, you can buy it… Federico Graglia
Hope spinel for sale
It’s called Hope (Hope in English) and there are those who hope to get hold. The large gem is octagonal cutting, weighing 50.13 carats, set into jaws with round-cut diamonds. It is mounted in silver and gold, and it can be a brooch, a pendant, part of a larger jewel. Surely, however, this gem put on auction by Bonhams (September 24) it has a long history behind it. It is named after Henry Philip Hope (1774-1839), scion of a wealthy family of Anglo-Dutch merchants and bankers. Mr. Hope was a collector with a passion for precious gems. So he began to form his collection around 1800 and continued to collect precious stones until his death in 1839. His collection has grown to 700 gems and pearls, cataloged by the German jeweler Bram Hertz. The collection was dispersed after the death of mr. Hope. But some pieces, such as the spinel surrounded by diamonds (valued 230-310mila dollars) have emerged from the mists.
In any case, it is worth to tell something more. The Hope collection has been stored for years in a cabinet mahogany to 16 trays. The larger stones were placed in the drawers 14 and 16. The top drawer contained various types of pearls. The big baroque pearl eastern, known as The Hope Pearl, was the largest known natural pearl: 5 centimeters long and 11.5 centimeters in circumference, weighs 85 grams. The second and third drawer held colored diamonds included reddish orange, pink, bright blue-green hues, and a lot of yellow and brown. There were also 49 faceted diamonds from the legendary mines of Golconda (India), including a diamond briolette-cut 14.25 carat which was part of the crown jewels of Portugal. The most famous is the Hope diamond, the 45.52 carat intense blue that was in the drawer 16 and is now kept at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington. But not only: Hope had in the drawers a sapphire of 130 carats, 133 carats from an emerald which once adorned the turban Tipu Sultan (sultan of India), and one perfect 50 carat spinel. Fiftyfive Shades of Blue
Name: Blue Moon Diamond. Characteristic signs: is one of the largest deep blue diamond known. Address: Sotheby’s, Geneva. This exceptional diamond will star Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels auction on November 11. It is a very unusual stone weighs 12.03 carats and was ranked Fancy Vivid Blue, the degree of color more intense blue diamonds, by Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The the quality of cushion-cut is impeccable, and was declared Internally Flawless. The only flaw? The price: the estimate is between 35 and 55 million dollars. Note that it is a value of affection: between minimum and maximum there are 20 million dollars of difference, an impressive figure. “The great enthusiasm tried last year following the discovery of a blue diamond of 29.62 carats rough at the Cullinan mine in South Africa is completely justified,” glosses David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby’s to the Jewellery Division. “With a weight of 12.03 carats after cut, the Blue Moon is a stunning stone for color purity and form. For me, blue is the most magical and mysterious of all the colors of diamonds and therefore today Blue Moon ranks among the most famous gems in the world”. The enthusiasm, given the auction price, is justified. Federico Graglia

The jewels of a special woman
History and jewels (now on sale) of a woman who has turned the heads of many powerful: it was called Denisa Lady Newborough. She died in 1992, aged 79. She has been defined by the Daily Telegraph in many ways: worldly audacious, between 1920 and 1940, “tightrope, nightclub girl, naked dancer, air pilot.” Originally from Romania, among his admirers she counted the King of Spain and Bulgaria, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and the well-Sheikh Ghana, which donated her 500 sheep. By conventional standards of the time, his free morality, combined with his fiery red hair, caused scandal. She claimed in his autobiography that he had spoken in 14 languages. Denisa had become Lady Newborough through a brief marriage with Thomas John Wynn, fifth Baron Newborough, who died in 1957. It is said that the Baron has initiated the divorce proceedings less than 24 hours after the wedding, which took place in Monte Carlo in the morning, after a night playing cards at the casino. In short, an exuberant star of the time.
Now the jewels of Lady Newborough go for auction on June 30 in London, from Roseberys (www.roseberys.co.uk). The jewels of Denisa include a pendant with a aquamarine 22:47 of gold and diamonds by Cartier. Lady Newborough received many gifts during his lifetime, but this piece stands out and is estimated between 7,500 and 11 thousand euro. Another jewel that stands out, is the butterfly-shaped brooch with a large white diamond, a yellow diamond and natural pearls.
From the same collection is part of a bracelet in 18K gold with diamonds in platinum by American jeweler David Webb. Dated 1960, it is a beautiful example of modern craftsmanship. Webb is known for his bold use of yellow gold and diamonds. Another valuable piece is a ring with an emerald-cut diamond mounted on a stalk of platinum. Federico Graglia

Christie’s sold the most expensive sapphire
It gone well, but not with many record: the auction of jewelry at Christie’s in Geneva will be compared, inevitably, with that of Sotheby’s a few days before (https://gioiellis.com/asta-con-6-record-per-sothebys) . If we measure the total figure, the game ended with an affirmation of the second auction house. Sotheby’s, in fact, ended with a sale to 150 million euro, while Christie’s is stopped (so to speak) 89 million Euros (about 97 million dollars). Sure, the lots were not the same. We can point up the strengths of the auction house: world auction record for a sapphire from Kashmir, 138 buyers from 24 countries, good strong results for colored gemstones and natural pearls, great interest in jewelry Jar, 19 lots were sold more than 1 million dollars. The top lot of the sale was a ring with a rectangular cut, with a fancy vivid pink diamond of 5.18 carats, sold for 9.5 million euro. A Kashmir sapphire, cushion cut, 35.09 carats, changed hands for 6.5 million euro, a figure that establishes the world auction record for this type of stone. “The relentless rise in demand for colored gemstones and pearls continued. Sapphire from Kashmir 35.09 carats set a new world record, with more than 200 thousand dollars per carat. A string of natural pearls changed hands for $ 3.8 million and a vivid pink diamond of 5.18 carats was sold for $ 10.7 million. Now expect sales exciting Paris, Hong Kong, London and New York in the coming months.” The four Jar jewels, reached a total of $ 1.7 million. A pair of antique bracelets of Colombian emerald, were sold for $ 1.5 million. Federico Graglia
Sotheby’s with six records in Geneva
World record for an auction of fine jewelry: in these words is the result of the sale of Tuesday evening, May 12, at Sotheby’s. One of those dates that probably will remain in the annals of the history of jewelry, which are becoming more and more also a diversification for investors as well as a passion for lovers of beauty and luxury. The auction of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in Geneva reached a total of 149.8 million Swiss francs, amounting to 160.9 million dollars, or, if you prefer, almost 150 million euro. That figure is, in fact, the record for an auction of jewelry. They were sold for 94% of the lots. Among them, Sotheby’s underscores some pieces that have boosted prices (in total there are six records achieved, including those for three Kashmir and Burma sapphires), starting with the new highest price of world’s auction for a ruby: Sunrise Ruby, Stone Burma 25.59 carats, defined “immeasurably rare,” was sold for 30.3 million euro. Other stone: The Historic Pink Diamond, of 8.72 carats, which has been linked to the history of Princess Mathilde Bonaparte, nephew of Napoleon I, reached 15.9 million dollars. A rare pearl necklace and diamond was sold for $ 6.7 million, another record for a jewel with two wires.
A valuable result for David Bennett, president of the international division of Sotheby’s Jewellery: «The record result of this evening is a reflection of the exceptional quality of the pieces for sale. The Ruby Sunrise fascinated me from the moment I saw it: a stone so exquisite, it really deserved the record price tonight. The outstanding results achieved by the other Cartier jewelry for sale, including two of the top awards worldwide for sapphires, and The Historic Pink Diamond, are proof that the market for fine jewelry is going stronger. The galleries were filled with collectors during our events around the world, and this has resulted in the sale offer live throughout tonight with demand truly global for the best diamonds, gemstones and signed pieces of the highest order». It is worth remembering the features of the Sunrise Ruby: maximum world’s price in auction of a carat ruby, new world auction record for a jewel of Cartier, the price triples the previous record, set by superb 8.62 carat Graff Ruby, always Geneva, 12 November 2014; the ruby is mounted by Cartier, weighs an exceptional 25.59 carat and the record price of the stone reflects his extraordinary size and excellent color.
