Sotheby’s with six records in Geneva

World record for an auction of fine jewelry: in these words is the result of the sale of Tuesday evening, May 12, at Sotheby’s. One of those dates that probably will remain in the annals of the history of jewelry, which are becoming more and more also a diversification for investors as well as a passion for lovers of beauty and luxury. The auction of Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in Geneva reached a total of 149.8 million Swiss francs, amounting to 160.9 million dollars, or, if you prefer, almost 150 million euro. That figure is, in fact, the record for an auction of jewelry. They were sold for 94% of the lots. Among them, Sotheby’s underscores some pieces that have boosted prices (in total there are six records achieved, including those for three Kashmir and Burma sapphires), starting with the new highest price of world’s auction for a ruby: Sunrise Ruby, Stone Burma 25.59 carats, defined “immeasurably rare,” was sold for 30.3 million euro. Other stone: The Historic Pink Diamond, of 8.72 carats, which has been linked to the history of Princess Mathilde Bonaparte, nephew of Napoleon I, reached 15.9 million dollars. We should also mention the 17 jewels that belonged to Mary Innes-Ker, Duchess of Roxburghe, including a tiara by Cartier 1930, sold for $ 2.5 million. A rare pearl necklace and diamond was sold for $ 6.7 million, another record for a jewel with two wires.
A valuable result for David Bennett, president of the international division of Sotheby’s Jewellery: «The record result of this evening is a reflection of the exceptional quality of the pieces for sale. The Ruby Sunrise fascinated me from the moment I saw it: a stone so exquisite, it really deserved the record price tonight. The outstanding results achieved by the other Cartier jewelry for sale, including two of the top awards worldwide for sapphires, and The Historic Pink Diamond, are proof that the market for fine jewelry is going stronger. The galleries were filled with collectors during our events around the world, and this has resulted in the sale offer live throughout tonight with demand truly global for the best diamonds, gemstones and signed pieces of the highest order». It is worth remembering the features of the Sunrise Ruby: maximum world’s price in auction of a carat ruby, new world auction record for a jewel of Cartier, the price triples the previous record, set by superb 8.62 carat Graff Ruby, always Geneva, 12 November 2014; the ruby is mounted by Cartier, weighs an exceptional 25.59 carat and the record price of the stone reflects his extraordinary size and excellent color.
