History and jewels (now on sale) of a woman who has turned the heads of many powerful: it was called Denisa Lady Newborough. She died in 1992, aged 79. She has been defined by the Daily Telegraph in many ways: worldly audacious, between 1920 and 1940, “tightrope, nightclub girl, naked dancer, air pilot.” Originally from Romania, among his admirers she counted the King of Spain and Bulgaria, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and the well-Sheikh Ghana, which donated her 500 sheep. By conventional standards of the time, his free morality, combined with his fiery red hair, caused scandal. She claimed in his autobiography that he had spoken in 14 languages. Denisa had become Lady Newborough through a brief marriage with Thomas John Wynn, fifth Baron Newborough, who died in 1957. It is said that the Baron has initiated the divorce proceedings less than 24 hours after the wedding, which took place in Monte Carlo in the morning, after a night playing cards at the casino. In short, an exuberant star of the time.
Now the jewels of Lady Newborough go for auction on June 30 in London, from Roseberys (www.roseberys.co.uk). The jewels of Denisa include a pendant with a aquamarine 22:47 of gold and diamonds by Cartier. Lady Newborough received many gifts during his lifetime, but this piece stands out and is estimated between 7,500 and 11 thousand euro. Another jewel that stands out, is the butterfly-shaped brooch with a large white diamond, a yellow diamond and natural pearls.
From the same collection is part of a bracelet in 18K gold with diamonds in platinum by American jeweler David Webb. Dated 1960, it is a beautiful example of modern craftsmanship. Webb is known for his bold use of yellow gold and diamonds. Another valuable piece is a ring with an emerald-cut diamond mounted on a stalk of platinum. Federico Graglia
