Ottaviani, an Italian historical brand for bijoux and jewelery, renews its collections for the winter 2017-2018. Proposed jewels use natural stones such as agate, quartz or amber. But the main aspect is the interpretation of pieces as miniature sculptures. Small teapots, leaves, bells, flowers, jars, birds, cats, children, owls emerge from earrings, rings and pendants. Rhodium-plated metal, in some cases with gilding, makes the surface brilliant. Particularity of the collection is the different treatment of silver 925, treated with a white wax, it is very shiny and of great effect. There are five new collections for the winter 2017-2018 by Giovanni Raspini. The florentine company specializing in silver has long taken the road to an ever more imaginative and elaborated jewel-style interpretation, with collections that over time have also added elements other than simple silver. This is the case for one of the winter collections, Via Lattea (Milky Way), with melted pieces with labradorite inserts. The pieces consist of a stream of small spheres of glossy silver on a burnished background, running in a bright set of textures and opalescence. The effect is as a small galaxy that becomes jewel and is, in fact, produced through the use of labradorite, a stone that has fluctuating reflections in colors ranging from gray to pale blue to blue. China is close, even in the spirit of jewelery. This time the German brand Thomas Sabo embraces yin and yang philosophy with a new collection, Dragon Nights. The affordable price jewelery line was presented in Paris and interprets the mythological figure in about 70 handmade jewelry made of 925 sterling silver nielled. It is better to explain: the technique is to cover the traces of an incision with the powdered niello. What is the niello? It is an alloy that blends at low temperatures. After melting the niello, it is poured into the grooves and then the superfluous is eliminated, so that the engraved drawing appears in the metal.
The inlays are enamelled, the metal is finished with 18-karat pink gold. The line includes both jewels and watches, all with the same reference to oriental mythology. “Our Dragon Nights lives in the tension between the historical symbols of Asia and a contemporary and very urban interpretation. It comes from glamor creations that celebrate the current return of the ethnic jewel,” commented Susanne Kölbli, creative director of Thomas Sabo. As for jewelery, experts have long wondered whether the cycle of high-quality, beautiful, but expensive production, is in decline. According to this interpretation, millennials, young people born at around the century, they would prefer inexpensive jewelry, under the roof of the 200-300 euro, rather than engaging in expensive purchases. According to a survey conducted in the US, young people are willing to spend no more than a month’s salary equivalent for an engagement ring, often the most important jewel of their lives. A reflection of this trend may be the financial results of a group like Pandora, who built an empire on affordable jewelery.
While many large Maison do not shine or even suffer from a drop in consumption, Pandora in the second quarter of 2017 reports a growth of 12% (in local currency) to about 649 million euros, compared with the second quarter of 2016. Pandora’s stores sell well: the revenues generated by the Danish company’s stores grew by 36%. In Europe and the Mediterranean area, growth was 10%, while the Americas did not shine (+ 1%), and in the Asia Pacific region there was a boom of 35%. She is called Giuditta Ambrosini. A very Italian name but not very exotic. Perhaps for this she felt the desire to turn it as the silver she uses for her jewels. This is how the Bjanca Judith brand is born: a way to express the creativity of the young designer of Verona, who has a degree in Visual Arts and Entertainment, specialization in Design and Production of Visual Arts at Iuav in Venice, and an intensive Jewel design at Lao in Florence. Not only that: Giuditta is a girl with many resources. She is also a photographer, videomaker and artist, with participation in various exhibitions.
Having said this, Bjanca Judith’s jewels have the merit of costing not too much, but at the same time showing a unique shape. They are jewels that have a signature in their own volume. A minimal jewel, describes still the designer, made always with a crafted work: “I personally work myself, from design to finish, file work, calibrating, milling and polishing machine”, she said. Prices: for bigger pieces, do not exceed 200 euros. A curiosity: prices are often different for the same jewel, with a minimum and a maximum tied to jewel measurements (eg a bracelet may be more or less wide) and, of course, the weight of the metal used.
