Valentina Ferragni‘s jewels have sold like hot cakes. The designer, sister of the even more famous influencer Chiara Ferragni, made her debut in the world of jewelry only a couple of months ago with her namesake brand Valentina Ferragni Studio. But the social notoriety has rewarded the initiative, for now limited to the Uali collection, the name of a line of modular earrings: that is, they can be joined together to form a chain. Even the price, not high but not cheap (120 euros the most expensive single earring), has held back sales, all via e-commerce.

The earrings are made of silver, in some cases 24 karat gold plated with the addition of cubic zirconia or a colored surface. Many models sold out in a short time. The Uali Gold variant ended just one week after opening and, after being restocked, went out of stock again after just one day. A result that many jewelry companies envy. The sales of the jewels take place through the brand’s website.

Baccarat Crystal is a French manufacturer of fine crystal and jewelery items. It is based in the town from which it takes its name: Baccarat, in France. It is a company with a long tradition, so much so that it has two museums: the Baccarat Museum of Baccarat, Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Baccarat Museum of Paris on Place des États-Unis. Last year Baccarat presented Be@rbrick Baccarat, a collection inspired by the Japanese manga character.

For 2020 Be@rbrick Baccarat is now also available in a bijoux version. The object born of the daring collaboration of the French Maison with the Japanese brand Medicom Toy, has been transformed into a street style bijoux look. The image of the manga character has been reinterpreted by various contemporary artists, street artists, fashion designers, the iconic art toy inspired by the reproduction of Lego characters in the guise of a teddy bear. With a silver frame, Be@rbrick bijoux has been transformed into a necklace, earrings and brooch in transparent, red or black crystal. Prices: the necklace 390 euros, brooch 250 euros, earrings 350 euros.

Baccarat also asked artist-designer Jaime Hayon to add his touch to the Pop Ring, Baccarat’s bestselling ring. It’s easy to say gold. The metal most used in luxury jewelry, considered the most precious asset for centuries, kept in ingots in bank vaults, actually has many faces. Because since it was used to make rings and necklaces, bracelets and earrings, gold has undergone several transformations. First of all, it can be more or less pure.

When a piece of jewelry is 100% gold it has 24 karats, while if it is 75% it is 18 karat. The remaining 25% is made up of other metals.

A percentage of 58% indicates a 14-karat alloy and, finally, when only 38% of gold remains, you have 9 karats. Furthermore, when it is alloyed with other metals, gold can change color, depending on the type of metal that is added. Everyone knows the three main shades: yellow, white and pink gold, colors that can be more or less intense. In reality, many jewelers use different percentages, which also give the gold completely different shades. In the diagram on this page we have summarized the main combinations that arise from the union of gold with other metals, in particular silver and copper.

In nature, in fact, gold has an intense yellow color, tending to orange, and is a very soft metal, which is easily deformed (1 gram can be transformed into a sheet of 1 square meter).

1 Yellow gold
The more intense yellow, the purer it is, as found in nature. The 99% pure gold is 24 carat and is exclusively deep yellow. Yellow gold is also the most used in jewelry. There are countries, such as India, which prefer gold in this color which is its natural hue. Yellow gold can also be of a less intense color, especially when alloyed with silver. Obviously the yellow gold with fewer carats, that is in alloy with other metals, has a more easily less intense color.

2 White Gold
It is an alloy with a white metal. When it comes to old jewels, it is often nickel (which however can cause allergies, on average to one in eight people), or manganese, palladium, but also silver. The alloy of gold and nickel is highly valued in jewelry because it makes the metal more durable for rings and brooches. On the other hand, gold with palladium is softer and makes setting stones easier. White gold is often not perfectly white, but has shades of yellow, brown or pink.

3 and 4 Pink gold and red
It is an alloy that uses copper. It was very popular in Russia in the nineteenth century and has come back into vogue in recent years. The color difference between red and pink shades depends on the copper content. For example, a 18-carat gold red uses 75% gold and 25% copper. A 18K rose gold 75% gold, 20% copper and 5% silver. Some even add up to 15% zinc to give a dark yellow hue.

5 Green gold

Green gold was already known in ancient times: this shade is obtained by adding silver. The color of the metal with this alloy is greenish-yellow, sometimes also obtained with cadmium, a metal which, however, can cause allergies. The light green hue is obtained with an alloy of 75% gold, 23% copper, 2% cadmium. The more intense green color has instead 75% gold, 15% silver, 6% copper and 4% cadmium.

6 Gray Gold
The gray color is especially used for jewelry with a modern design. This color is obtained with a mix of yellow gold and palladium or silver, manganese and copper. If the other metals are added in minimal quantities, the color is closest to that of white gold.

7 Purple Gold
Violet or purple gold is obtained from an alloy that includes a particular type of aluminum. But purple gold is more fragile than other gold alloys and for this reason it is not often used: a sharp blow could cause the metal and, therefore, the jewel to shatter. Often purple gold is used only for small details of the jewels, together with gold (more robust) with other colors.

8 Blue gold
It is used rather rarely, but it is undoubtedly surprising. The gold of this color is obtained with an alloy with two metals little used in jewelry: alongside the yellow metal (46%), in fact, gallium or indium are added. in case, before buying it make sure you do not have allergies to these metals.

9 Black gold
It can be produced with various methods: by electroplating, with a rhodium or ruthenium patina. Or with a coating that uses sulfur and oxygen or with a forced oxidation by chromium or cobalt. In autumn the leaves do not always fall. Buccellati, for example, uses silver to create leaves that will never fall. The series of leaf-shaped bracelets proposed by the Maison famous for its high jewelry is called Mario Leaf, and is named after the founder of the company. The leaves designed and produced by Mario Buccellati were proposed for the first time in the 1930s and are inspired by a botany book that was recommended to him by the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio in a letter in 1929.

The four leaves that make up the collection are all made of 925 silver, embossed or hammered by hand by master silversmiths. Each of the four bracelets is dedicated to a leaf type, which also takes on a symbolic meaning, with concepts such as growth, fertility and renewal. The olive leaf, for example, inspires a bracelet that symbolizes regeneration and peace.

Nature becomes the theme of the new Morellato collection which is called Natura. But it is a floral nature: the stylized petals lead the sign of the 925 silver bijoux and cabochon-cut white stones. Soft geometries, simple proportions, soft colors: these are jewels that adapt well to everyday life. The white synthetic stone recalls the brightness of ceramic: combined with the silvery color of the metal contributes to a calm style.

An ancient Latin motto says: per aspera ad astra. That is, through the asperity until to the stars. It is a good saying that needs to be repeated, especially in this difficult period. Pianegonda‘s series of collections with the name in Latin continues with Nexum. In truth, the nexum in ancient Rome was a form of guarantee, perhaps the most solemn that was provided for in the legal system. The nexum was encoded in written form in the Laws of the XII tables, where the debtor pledged himself to the creditor, becoming subject to the latter. In essence, it meant giving yourself a slave to someone to pay off your father’s debts. But we must stop here, because the name Nexum is probably used by the brand of the Bros Manifatture group in a completely different sense.

The word, in fact, should indicate a link, that is a link between two subjects. In this case, the connection lies in the intertwining of metal wires in natural silver and in a version colored with black ruthenium with which the jewels are made. It is no coincidence that Pianegonda approaches the Nexum collection with the image of the Eiffel Tower, a work built with an interweaving of iron elements. The jewels of the Nexum collection also feature cubic zirconia of different colors: white, yellow, blue, violet. It is up to you to discover the connection.

San Pantaleo, for Christians, is the patron saint of doctors and midwives. And in Piazza San Pantaleo, in Rome, there is the atelier of Giulia Barela, one of the signatures of the jewelry of the capital of Italy. What is the link? Simple: for the designer, beauty must be a practice of well-being. Somehow, in short, jewels can heal the spirit or, at least, give a good mood. From this principle Giulia Barela started to conceive the Memento collection.

The word is linked to the concept of memory and, therefore, of awareness of the past, in particular for the female condition. And perhaps the stair-shaped elements that make up some of the pieces in the collection also symbolize the ups and downs of life, as well as a metaphor for personal growth. Another recurring icon is that of the four-leaf clover, a good luck charm. In any case, the collection, made with sculptural effects, consists of 13 pieces: two bracelets, five rings, a necklace and a pendant. They are available in both 925 silver and 24-karat gold-plated bronze.

After four years, from April 2020 Hollie Bonneville Barden is no longer the artistic director of John Hardy, the brand founded in Bali in 1975. Those of the summer, therefore, are presumably her latest collections. What will change in the Maison of handmade, yet affordable, handcrafted jewelry? It’s hard to say. John Hardy’s collections have always been conceived starting from evocative symbolisms and with a style inspired by the ethnic motifs of the Asian island.

The Maison was founded in 1975 by Canadian designer and artist John Hardy, who fell in love with Bali. The jeweler began studying the techniques of local artisans, then developed his first pieces by applying new design concepts to traditional Balinese techniques. But the company was also a community, with an organic farm and low-impact buildings. In 1999 Guy Bedarida, senior designer of the high jewelery of Place Vendôme, joined the company as Head Designer. But in 2007 the company was sold to Damien Dernoncourt, who moved the headquarters to Hong Kong and with a satellite office in New York. In 2016 the artistic direction of Hollie Bonneville Barden, who previously worked for De Beers. Until last April.

Fluo colors and new models arrive alongside the small gold or silver ingots. The Fluo mono-earring, as its name indicates, uses the model of the semi-independent earring in bright colors such as lime yellow, fuchsia and electric blue. It is made with the cataphoresis technique: an electrochemical surface treatment that applies a colored film on the silver surface, which protects against chemicals and guarantees resistance to corrosion and oxidation.

The line with ingot in 999.9 pure gold (i.e. 24 carats) re-proposes the models of the original collection presented in autumn 2019: necklace, bracelet, in the full metal version and in the version with wrist band, single and double, in leather, the dangling, semi-independent or lobe earrings, the ring and cufflinks.

In the line with ingot in 999 pure silver, however, three new pieces are added: two models of necklaces and an anklet. In addition to the silver color, they are available in rose gold, yellow and burnished gold plating versions. The first new choker-style pendulum necklace with a horizontal pendant ingot, also in the four color versions, the long necklace with two groups of placed ingots, silver, gold-plated and in the two-tone burnished silver version with rose gold ingots. Finally, the anklet, with four chains and the ingot positioned horizontally, also in the four silver, gold, pink, burnished variants.

Indeed, Rosato launches an initiative linked to its Into the Blue collection. The purchase of a pendant from the collection will help, with a portion of the proceeds, to support the One Ocean Fundation, an Italian initiative established in 2018 by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, which has as its objective the safeguarding of the marine ecosystem. Good news from the world of jewelry: there are still those who want to do, to propose, to confront the market. In this specific case the novelty is called Adelio Rossini. The even more interesting aspect is that it is a historical name, which now resumes the road interrupted by the crisis (not this one, that of world finance ten years ago).

The story began in 1988, when Adelio and Maria Grazia Rossini started a craft workshop, Stilnovo, in the district of Valenza (Italy). The company has grown and has worked, and still works, as a subcontractor for major jewelry brands. Over the years it has acquired solid expertise and, above all, “has reached a high standard of quality, necessary for working with Maison that sell on the international market”, says Maria Grazia Rossini.

At the beginning of the new century, the leap into the retail market was decided with its own brand, Adelio Rossini. However, an activity that was put on stand-by following the 2008 world recession: the company continued work on behalf of third parties. But, as often happens, it is a new generation that promotes change. Claudio Rossini, son of the founders, organized the great return of the brand to business. “We decided to return to the market with the Adelio Rossini brand and to focus on quality jewelry, but at an affordable price”, explains Claudio Rossini. The average price range varies between 99 and 700 euros, depending on the material used: silver, or silver bathed in gold. We go up, however, for the jewels in only 18 carat gold.

The realization of the jewels is concentrated in San Salvatore Monferrato, near Valenza, while the design takes place in the Lugano office (Switzerland). “Unpretentious jewels, which can be worn every day, even if you are wearing blue jeans,” adds Maria Grazia Rossini. “I would call them jewels with a gentle geometry”. In short, the machine has restarted. The distribution focuses on online shopping and, to start, on Milan and Lugano, where the jewels have already found the first showcase.
