Sicily by Giovanni Raspini

Tuscan silver goes to Sicily. It is the silver of Giovanni Raspini, who chooses the Italian island as the source of inspiration for his new collection: Sicily. With a novelty by the standards of the Florentine brand: burnished silver and worked as always with a sculptural style, in the Sicily collection is also accompanied by small freshwater pearls. Pearls and silver alternate on bracelets and necklaces for a contrast that enriches the jewels and adds a baroque tone. It is no coincidence that Sicily boasts a rich heritage of architecture and art from this artistic style.

It has just turned 100, but it is in perfect shape: Caramanna Gioielli, a Neapolitan brand with the creative guidance of Stefania Caramanna, was born in 1920, the year of inauguration of the jewelry store opened by the grandfather of the current designer. Stefania Caramanna, who entered the business in 1989, however, has a different background: she has a degree in architecture and has dedicated herself to jewelery by merging her two professional experiences. The real launch of the Caramanna Gioielli brand, however, is more recent: it dates back to 2008. Caramanna Gioielli’s proposals are oriented towards silver pieces, embellished with semi-precious stones such as onyx or topazes and pearls. Rings and necklaces have substantial volumes, with a processing that favors soft and rounded shapes, often depicting animals or traditional subjects.

Environment, nature, sustainability: concepts that have (hopefully) become part of the collective consciousness. And Rosato, a brand of the Bros Manifatture group, joins those who care about the fate of the Earth with the Gaia collection. Which is not only a feminine name, but also a reference to natural balance. In Greek mythology, in fact, Gaia was the Greek goddess of the Earth, mother of all life, similar to the Roman Terra Mater. And, if mythology were not enough, we must remember the scientific hypothesis Gaia, formulated for the first time by the English scientist James Lovelock, according to which living organisms on Earth interact with the surrounding inorganic components to form a complex self-regulating system, which helps to maintain and perpetuate the conditions for life on the planet.

That said, the Gaia collection uses the universal symbol of peace, together with leaves, flowers, butterflies and bees as elements that make up the 925 rhodium-plated jewels in natural or pink color, for pendants with white and red cubic zircons. The prices of some jewels: a necklace 129 euros, bracelet 89 euros, earrings 119 euros, ring 75 euros.

Before talking about the Amataum collection by Pianegonda, it is necessary to make a premise: the language of the ancient Romans, Latin, distinguishes the logical-grammatical functions of nouns, adjectives and pronouns thanks to five declensions: the word, therefore, takes on small changes that serve to indicate its function. Among the declensions, the accusative indicates the person or thing on which the action of the verb falls directly. Here we are to explain that Amatum can be translated simply as “the beloved”. Pianegonda, however, from the brand that is part of Bros Manifatture is presented in a completely different way the collection: inspired by what nature creates, such as plant fibers or sand dunes in the desert, with wavy lines sculpted by the wind.

And so, Amatum perhaps refers to love for nature. Or, instead, love would be for silver combined with semi-precious stones such as amethyst or lime quartz, the materials that make up the brand’s jewels? In any case, the wavy lines are used to compose necklaces with pendants, rings, bracelets and earrings in the style that now distinguishes the new life of Pianegonda.

One of Giovanni Raspini‘s new collections for spring 2021 is called Fili (threads) and is made, like others, with the lost-wax casting technique. As it is known, it is an ancient technique used for sculptures that was even introduced in the Bronze Age. According to archaeological findings, the lost wax technique was used as early as 3500 BC. by the Sardinian populations and has known a considerable diffusion especially in the art of Sardinia (Italy) and then in Greek and Roman art and in monumental sculpture.

The Fili collection uses the lost-wax casting technique to sculpt the volumes of the silver jewels, with an accentuated burnishing to accentuate the design. The jewels, in fact, are designed as if a silver thread were wrapped around it. In this way the movement is enhanced and the repetition of the stylistic concept achieves an interesting chiaroscuro effect. The collection features two necklaces, two bracelets, two rings and two hoop earrings.

Georg Arthur Jensen, born in 1866, was a famous Danish silversmith, founder of the company that bears his name, Georg Jensen. And after so many years, the brand retains the clear Nordic design, applied to objects for the home and for jewelry. Jensen made his first jewel in 1899, but the Maison’s collections are still appreciated all over the world today. An example is that of the Curve collection, one of the latest productions of the Danish brand. Exercising on the concept of roundness means risking repeating something proposed in past over and over again. Bottega Veneta is one of the most exclusive fashion brands. In particular, it is famous for its leather products. His atelier is located in an eighteenth-century villa in Montebello Vicentino (Vicenza, Italy), but is based in Lugano, Switzerland, and offices in Milan. Founded in 1966, the company was acquired in 2001 by the Gucci Group, now part of the French multinational Kering. Colored necklaces for spring 2021. Mabina, a Milanese jewelry brand at an affordable price, offers them. The necklaces are three, made of 925 rose silver, multicolored crystals and agate, and have different lengths. The pink links of the necklace proposed in the length of 90 centimeters (price: 49 euros) leave room for small silver spheres, followed two by two by faceted glass drops, which play with light and refractions.

The necklace is also proposed in the length of 45 centimeters (price: 36 euros), with small color variations between the multicolor glass drops joined by the pink silver chain. The new Albert M. collection is called Terra (Earth) and is made with silver and natural stones.

The black spinel and the garnet are added to the silver. Not only that: the jewels are made with a rare decorative technique called Ink Texture, which derives from the art of Japanese ink coloring. This technique allows to recreate a coloring effect of the surface of each jewel. The inlays on the surface of the jewel, more precisely, are dyed with an indelible pigment, with a “second skin” effect. Perhaps this is also why the jewelry designer Gaia Caramazza has dedicated a new collection to Gea, consisting largely of necklaces. The jewels have considerable volumes and are made of silver and natural stones, all created by hand using the techniques of lost wax casting and banquet processing. In short, an artisanal work that borders on artistic production.

Among other things, jewels were the protagonists of Altaroma, the event focused on fashion organized in Rome, which also for the need to translate the atmosphere into digital images, created a fashion film that used the collection. Obviously the jewels are linked to the natural world, for example with shapes that are inspired by vegetation or the marine world.

From Capri, an Italian island opposite Naples frequented by celebrities, to the Hamptons and Palm Beach shops of Bergdorf Goodman and Aerin Lauder. The necklaces and ears of Grazia and Marica Vozza, twin sisters and partners in the small Capri jewelery shop, have come a long way. They are worn by Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey but, obviously, also by many other women attracted by the cheerful compositional lightness of the jewels. A silver jewelry collection inspired by a fox’s skull. It is a rather unusual idea. But it must be added that Giovanni Raspini’s Skin collection for spring-summer 2021 is, in reality, the continuation of an artistic creation by the Florentine jeweler: the Skull of Fox necklace, one of the pieces that were part of the Jewels from a Wunderkammer. In the exhibition, Raspini’s creativity was expressed in unique pieces in which gilded silver was used together with hydrothermal quartz in various colors and, in the case of the necklace, together with a fox skull that had belonged to a Florentine painter.

The Skin collection takes up the motif of juxtaposed scales, used for the jewel that appeared in the exhibition, and adapted to the design of two necklaces, two bracelets, two rings and two earrings. The jewels are made with blackened silver, the slightly irregular contours add a hint of naturalist realism in the reproduction of the scales inspired by the animal world.

What is the paradox for a jeweler? Choosing creativity to escape the chains of a fixed job, but then choosing chains as a model of style. This is what happened to Tilly Sveaas, an English mother and Norwegian father, who fled to the East at the age of 18 in search of excitement, adventure and above all to escape from a too regular life. For a year Tilly Sveaas lived in Bali, on a perennial vacation. Then, the youthful irregularities softened, and Tilly was fascinated by Southeast Asia. For example, for the ancient tradition of silver processing.
