The teacher. The artist. The innovator. Wallace Chan is all three of these definitions at the same time. For example, just a couple of years ago he developed an incredible indestructible porcelain and five times harder than steel, a material that allows him to create jewelry, but also sculptures, which could not be made with other materials.

And for the European public, Wallace Chan presents some of his most recent (and rarefied) jewelry creations in London. The exhibition is entitled Shapeshifter: The Multiverse of Wallace Chan (September 14-17, Asia House). It is also the third and final stage of this traveling exhibition, over time arrived at 20 pieces, with unbreakable porcelain. In addition, the exhibition includes ten large titanium sculptures, the metal favorite of the Hong Kong artist-jeweler. Another invention of the jeweler is the Wallace Cut, a technique of engraving in a transparent stone or crystal, which combines faceting and carving techniques. The result of this delicate work is a multidimensional optical illusion, which reveals four additional images of the incision if they are observed on the front face.

Some of these pieces have already been presented in New York and Hong Kong, others are new. Among the most interesting pieces is the Garden of Dreams pin, which uses porcelain that is repeatedly carved and baked. The filaments of the flower are in blue-green titanium and the anthers are made with red precious stones. Italy and Lebanon, two countries overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Perhaps as a reflection of these origins, between sea and blue sky, strong colors and primary tastes, de Grisogno offers three high jewelery creations dedicated to the Mediterranean, with turquoise stone in the center. The blue of turquoise is combined with the warmth of amethysts or pink sapphires, it evokes the richness and the Mediterranean flora, or, in a creation, it matches the depth of emeralds and blue sapphires that reflect the magnificence of the sea.

The ring takes up the pattern of the Ventaglio (fan) collection. At the heart of the jewel is an exceptional cabochon cut turquoise. On the two sides of the stone there are the flounces of the fan composed of diamonds, pink sapphires and brilliant-cut amethysts. With an exquisite finish to the touch of the hand, the eye discovers that the wings of the jewel are entirely covered with amethysts also in the lower part.

Romeo and Juliet is the most famous tragedy written by William Shakespeare. Needless to summarize the story: everyone knows it. The two unfortunate young lovers, killed by a cruel fate, have become symbols in the collective imagination. From characters of a theatrical work they have become real characters, so much so that in Verona thousands of tourists go to visit the house attributed to Juliet. It doesn’t matter if the girl has existed or not, the pilgrimage is in fact destined to sanctify love.

Working on Romeo and Juliet seemed necessary for several reasons. Literature is an important source of inspiration for the Maison, which in 2003 paid tribute to the Shakespeare universe with the Songe d´une nuit d’été collection. When Benjamin Millepied, with whom we have been collaborating for several years, announced to us that he was preparing a contemporary interpretation of Romeo and Juliet, a formidable creative opportunity was envisaged. Shakespeare’s masterpiece is the starting point of a new thematic collection, but also of a multidisciplinary dialogue between High Jewelery, dance, music and graphic arts.

The new jewelery series created by Charlotte Dauphin de la Rochefoucauld, descendant of one of the noblest French families, is composed of two sets: Paraboles, which is an evolution of the iconic fluid structures of the Maison Dauphin, and Monuments, which finds its own roots in the most architectural collections of the jewelery brand. Among other things, the novelties also represent an important anniversary, because they celebrate the fifth of the Maison’s birth. The jewels were admired in the heart of the eighth arrondissement of Paris, through a set designed by Félix de Montesquiou and photographed by Paolo Roversi.

I wanted to display my work in this personal, intimate space that is a family house and create a conversation between the creations and the space. Like a mise en abyme, a vast mirror in which we would be enclosed, trapped, and see ourselves. I see my creations as mirrors of the self. So is a monument, the intimate space of a house. “Form is the essence brought to the surface” says Victor Hugo. The mirror may be a surface, an in-between space between the inner and the outside worlds. Two worlds that can never meet and that language in all its forms desperately tries to reconcile.
