2 Gently scrub the jewelry with a soft bristled toothbrush, the softest possible (there are specific products, but a toothbrush or eyebrow brush will be fine), to avoid scratching the surface. Attention, stiff bristles may remove the top layer in the case of gold plated or galvanic treatment jewelry. Particular attention should be paid to very sensitive and soft stones, such as opals, or pearls.

3 Rinse in running water (always lukewarm) to remove the last residues, remembering to cover the drain plug with a pasta or metal filter coffee sieve. It is early to do the math, but the latest report from the World Gold Council that examines the first three months of 2020 provides the first answers. The result is predictable: coronavirus has plunged the annual demand for gold jewelry in the first quarter of 2020 by 39% to 325.8 tons, which is the lowest level. If you consider the value, however, the global demand for gold jewelry has fallen less: 26% on an annual basis. And this is because in the meantime the price of gold has gone up: it sells less, but costs more. The quarterly average price of gold was $ 1,582.8 per ounce, or $ 50.88 per gram. China, India, the USA and Europe
Still if we consider the first three months of 2020, the country where the demand has fallen most is China, which is also the first area where the contagion has spread. For this reason, those who have gold jewelry in the drawer that they have not worn for a long time, or are having financial difficulties, think that they are taking advantage of the moment to sell rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets. Among other things, many jewelers have long started to use ethically sustainable gold, often recycled. Which is precisely what derives from the fusion of old jewels: according to some experts it is about 30% of the yellow metal used in jewelry. But is it really worth selling the jewels to seize the moment, which can really be called golden? In reality, care must be taken not to confuse the price of gold on the markets with that of the companies that buy jewelry.

According to the Bloomberg agency, which specializes in finance and markets, gold is generally purchased at a discount of around 96%. Basically, if you sell a gold ring and receive 300 euros or dollars (for example), the same jewel once melted to form an ingot is sold on the market at almost 600. Okay, the amalgamation process must be taken into account, but it is clear that the seller of a jewel has not concluded a good deal.

So is selling a jewelry to a company that buys gold a bad idea? Not always, actually. If a jewel is branded, for example Tiffany, Bulgari, Pomellato, etc., the price of the jewel has a good chance of being evaluated differently. If it is a good jewel, for example, it will not end up in the crucible to be melted together with the other anonymous pieces, but will be resold directly, or auctioned. And it could receive an interesting evaluation, especially if it is a jewel with a particular history, or of great value.

At the heart of gold consumption, however, it is inevitable to put the epicenter of the epidemic, China. With a premise: according to Artigas, it is wrong to make a comparison with SARS, another epidemic that hit China between 2002 and 2003. In that case, in fact, the impact on health conditions (number of infected and dead) is was clearly minor.

As for China, for example, it can already be said that the Chinese demand for jewelry has been significantly lower than last year. Also because the Chinese buy jewelry especially in the first and fourth quarter of the year. The decrease in sales is currently around 10-15%. Then there is the reflection on the price of gold, which traditionally goes up when crises of various kinds face the world. Today China, explains the World Gold Council, is the largest gold market, contributing 30% of consumer demand in 2019.

Some of the effects of the coronavirus are already visible from the increase in trading volumes on the Shanghai Gold Exchange, the Chinese gold exchange, which has seen investor purchases. But eventually the potential deceleration in consumer demand could have a more noticeable effect on price than in 2003.

In summary, due to the coronavirus the demand for gold in the first quarter can drop by at least 10-15%. Whether demand resumes or continues to subside will depend on the duration of the epidemic and its impact on economic growth.

The two scenarios
1 If the situation is resolved relatively quickly and the global impact is contained, the result could be limited to a weaker Chinese demand for gold and a transitory impact on the price.

Although we must not forget that the cost of gold continues to rise: it has risen by 8.5% since the Federal Reserve, in December 2017, started raising interest rates. But what matters most: the dollar price against the euro or interest rates? Answer: the dollar. “But there are exceptions”.
Then there is the global instability factor. According to the WGC analysis, “a period of increased geopolitical risk, which has a potential impact on the global economy, could support gold even if the dollar strengthens. Therefore, we believe that investors benefit from the allocation of a strategic allocation to gold as a source of return, diversification, liquidity and portfolio impact “.
