Is the necklace you see on this page a scandal? It seems so. It was launched, together with other jewellery, by the Spanish brand Mango. But he didn’t take into account the (excessive?) sensitivity of those who found the name of the line incorrect: Slave style. Chains and shackles and the other trinkets at the chain’s sale prices, in truth, could only hold a 99-year-old slave prisoner, and only if he was anaemic. But it’s the principle that counts, it seems. A petition, for example, was immediately launched in Paris by former Miss France, Sonia Rolland. And around fifty activists, some of them with (real) slave chains, stood in front of the Mango store in Les Halles, Paris. So the Spanish brand, after having archived an avalanche of criticism, resigned itself to apologizing via Twitter and removed the offending name from the line of bijoux which, moreover, are in many ways similar to hundreds of others. He did the right thing? Or are the criticisms exaggerated? Judge for yourself. F.G.
